Medical care here is ranked one spot higher than the US in last years rankings. It's also very cheap, maybe 20-30% of US costs. if you want to get private medical insurance it's approximately $100 or so per month. There is also the national run healthcare system that you must pay into if you are a resident (you don't have to be a resident to live here). The national health care system covers 100% of everything but if you need surgery, you may be waiting a long time to get it. It is very cheap though. we only pay $70 a month for the national health care for our entire household. Most of the good hospitals are located around San Jose. We have a small hospital here with a helicopter to take you to San Jose in an emergency. A lot of doctor visits here aren't needed because you can buy virtually any drug you want at the pharmacy without a prescription. Costa Rica has become a real hotbed for plastic surgery and dental care "vacations" due to the excellent care and cheap prices.

Here are the rankings: Costa Rica 36th, US 37th. http://thepatientfactor.com/canadia...zations-ranking-of-the-worlds-health-systems/

Thanks, pug. What about taxes?

Can you own a home without being a permanent resident? Damnitt I wish it was 6 years from now so I could start looking.

What about the rental market on houses? If I bought one now would I be able to rent it out?

xstop No you don't. Trust me on that one.

Pug will know the other stuff. The house I'm renting is from people in the states. Pretty sure most of the houses for rent are people from other countries that either moved back or come here for certain months of the year. Almost all the properties are furnished.

Serious question here. What about marijuana? I don't smoke but I've always figured I would start back up once the kids were out of the house and I know my wife will want to smoke.

Anybody can buy real estate here. I'm not involved in the rental real estate market but I know several people that are. You can make some money at it. Most people that are involved in it buy rentals on or very near the beach. It might be tricky to run a real estate rental business if you're not here though.

Marijuana here is socially acceptable and its use is widespread. All drugs here are easily obtained, including prescription drugs. Costa Rica recently legalized growing marijuana for personal use. Technically, possession of marijuana in public is illegal but it's not really enforced by the cops unless you are blatant and in their face about it. The cops here are mostly after the big time traffickers and not anybody else. Friends of mine were recently pulled over by the cops after smoking a marijuana pipe in their car. The car was full of smoke when they got pulled over. When they rolled down the window, the smoke poured out into the cops face. He just laughed at them about it. With the lax enforcement on drugs, you would think that drug related crime would be rampant but that's just not the case.

I like this area because the temps stay 65-80 the whole year. There's a nice breeze in the hills too.
