don't bow to me, i could be down 40k in two days.

but i do have some questions for you re pro tennis, if you want to answer.

most sports, it's pretty obvious what separates pros from average people - size, height, etc. but in tennis, the diffs are far less obvious.

here's my question: why can't an average mesomorph, say 6'2" 190, be a pro tennis player? what are the ability extremes that tennis people have that average people don't. i mean, i see the skill, but that can be developed, to some extent. when you see a player like steffi graf - what is it physically that makes her different from any of ten million other girls?it's not, to me, immediately obvious.

Well there Mr. GoldenTaint I could type about 5 thousand words as to what makes someone an elite pro tennis player but one problem, I was never an elite pro tennis player:142smilie

But seriously......here we go.......

There are a number of reasons........here are some:

Note: Every point below is about a male tennis player, don't get me started on the chicks.

1) Hand/Eye co-ordination

Tennis is one of those sports where you have to have incredible hand/eye. And guess what, many just don't have it. They just don't. I can't put it any other way. It can't be developed, you just have to have it. 95% of the population does not realize just how tough it is to control a tennis ball.

2) It is an individual sport

What I mean by this is that there is nobody to blame. Like any sport it starts early. Nobody decides at 25 that they will take up tennis and become pro in a year. Meaning you start young. And unlike other sports where you are involved in a team you are on your own in tennis. Meaning you can't blame the coach for not playing you enough. Or blame the QB for not passing you the ball. It is all on you. And guess what, most can't take it. It is just too tough mentally. I guess what I am saying is that tennis is more mental then other sports and most can't cut it.

Now as for the chicks........ok fine fine I said I wouldn't go therekurby

And yeppers.......those Williams chicks are scum, they have improved a bit, but they are still scum. If the general public knew the shit they pull "behind the scenes" they would be thought of much different.

Oh and speaking of which.......most of the guys on tour are good dudes, a few pricks but all and all solid individuals.

By far the biggest asshole maybe in all of sports was Marcelo Rios. Nobody, I mean nobody liked that fuckhead.

And since we are "gossiping".........

(keep in mind I have been out of the game a long long long time so most of this is outdated. But still get some "inside info" from those out on the tour)

1) All the guys in the top 20 get along with one another except for Murray, Djokovic, and Soderling. Those three piss the other 17 off. 3 years ago Soderling was hated by all, but he has cleaned up his act. No super asshole in top 100 except for maybe Murray, he seems to be the least liked. And with that said, Murray isn't that bad. Also, Hewitt rubs some the wrong way.

2) Almost none of the chicks in top 50 practice with one another, they are all so catty. It does happen, but it is rare. Almost all of em have male hitting partners that travel with em.

3) Marcelo Rios on more then one occasion got his ass beat by not only fellow players but tourney officials. And I ain't making that shit up. The ATP covered up some stuff with him. Everybody hated him so much that they almost encouraged fellow players to beat on him:mj07: He was by far the biggest asshole to ever crack the top 100. He was a complete dick.

4) I don't have official stats, but of the girls in the top 200 that have male coaches......I'd say 75% of em are fucking those coaches. Trust me when I tell you there is a ton of fucking going on. A ton. I know two coaches right now that are banging their players.

Ok, makes sense. Any other attributes, or is it this alone that is the main divide between those w potential to be top 1000 in world. What about eyesight? I wonder if many tennis players have better than 20/20 vision, like Ted Williams did.

That's an excellent point, and one that had never occurred to me. I wonder if it's the same with golf. They tend to play tennis and golf as class things, but tennis is a lot less expensive.

I don't like Murray, and I don't even know him. Surprising about Soderling. Most Swedes I've met were even-keeled, not really hatable types. Djokovic seems like he would be friendly. He definitely looks intelligent, like he has an ironical twist, but that's not necessarily a good thing against drivers with blinders on like Nadal.

He was back a ways, wasn't he? I'm familiar with the name, but I don't remember him playing recently. I remember Williams' dad going off on anti-white rant on Spirlea. Good example of double standards.

I don't believe anything I hear on tv, and if it's something important, even less! Sports is an example. You can hear the announcers saying things you can see aren't true. Well thank god for it, because it makes picking a good deal easier. You always read in the betting books that advantages go to those who study the smaller conferences because the games are less covered. maybe that's true. but it's wrong to draw the opposite conclusion, that the more a game is covered, the less advantage the bettor has. seems to me, more coverage = more lies = more chance for the clear-eyed to see through those lies.

Not hard to believe. Wasn't there a thread on this here, or was it somewhere else and linked here? It was rather interesting, a women's tennis coach talking about this sort of stuff - the tour grind in general.

I'm thinking Tipsy ends the Nishikori run today as well. What do you think about Haase over Wawrinka? Wawrkinka had a real struggle yesterday. Did you read that he left his wife and family to focus on his tennis career?

no, didnt see that. would tend toward haase, but with the games, 4. he squeezed it out yesterday, but nothing real impressive. haven't seen wawrinka play lately. haase is a total meh to me. i'm laying off it and the total. i guess my feeling is haase will push him but wawr will prevail, so i would lean haase + games and over, but i'm not going to play either one.

i think tips wins. i'm just hoping he keeps his mind straight and doesn't take three sets.

i like nads to win somehow, and will take the juicy 23 under on tips-nish, altho tips is just flaky enough he could fail to close like a couple others this week

Nadal is retting raked...must be worn down completely.

i feel like a moron. he was not recovered. he said he felt weak talking to medics on side. this loss was purely due to health. the flu deprived him of the energy to chase down balls, and he can't afford to be short on that at all given how well davdenko is playing. so, he was not competitive. he just played it out rather than retire. probably most players would have retired after first set when he was clearly considering it. it was crazy to back him, and yesterday should have been the clue but i didnt take it.
