Friday’s Den: Random stuff with the weekend here………

Ravens 34, Bengals 20
Bengals led 10-7 when Burrow left with an injured right hand/wrist.
Bengals rest of game: 6 drives- 32 plays, 162 yards, 10 points.
Backup QB Browning was 8-14/68 passing; he also ran for 40 yards.
Last six games, Cincy scored 45 points on their first drive of game.
Ravens won five of their last six games (4-2 ATS).
Baltimore is 7-1 when it scores 20+ points, 0-2 if they do not.
Ravens have led all 11 games after the 3rd quarter this year.
Ravens’ team total: over 8-3

— This year, NFL teams are 1-6 SU, 0-7 ATS the week after playing the Cowboys.

— So far this season, the NFL team that was bet the most each week at BetMGM is 3-6-1 against the spread in that game.

— Carolina Panthers’ coach Frank Reich will resume his play-calling duties this week, with the Panthers wallowing at 1-8. Reich had given play-calling duties to OC Thomas Brown for four weeks, with Carolina going 1-3 in those games.
Panthers have a rookie QB, and two rookie coordinators, not a recipe for success.

— Pitt 24, Boston College 16- Pitt QB Yarnell threw for 207 yards and a TD, ran for another score in his second career start. Panthers ran ball 33 times for 197 yards.

— When NBA teams play 2nd game of back/back nights this year:
home first night, on road 2nd night- 2-8 ATS
on road both nights- 9-4 ATS
at home both nights- 3-8-1 ATS
road first night, at home 2nd night- 4-7 ATS

— Thunder 128, Warriors 109
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 24 points, dished out seven assists.
Isaiah Joe scored 23 points in 25:00 off the bench.
Golden State lost five of its six home games.
Draymond Green’s 5-game suspension is going to cost him $769,970 in salary; in his career, he’s been fined a total of roughly $1.4M by the NBA.

— Heat 122, Nets 115
Jimmy Butler scored 36 points, was +9 in 35:00.
Miami was +16 in the 16:00 Kevin Love played off the bench.
Brooklyn’s five subs were a combined minus-46.

— Word of the Day: Consensus- general agreement among a group of people.

— Quarterbacks/wide receivers should get stat credit for pass interference penalties- it amounts to the same as a completed pass, doesn’t it?

— Average starting field position has been a telling stat in the NFC West this year:
6-3 49ers, 6-3 Seahawks have both won field position in every game but one.
3-6 Rams have lost field position in every game but one.
2-8 Cardinals have lost field position every game this season.

— Atlanta was awarded the 2025 major league All-Star Game, four years after MLB moved the event from Truist Park to Denver’s Coors Field over objections to changes in Georgia’s voting rights laws.

— Dayton 70, LSU 67— Bayou Bengals led 60-45 with 9:07 left to play; bad loss for a team that started out 12-1 last year, but wound up 14-19.

— St Bonaventure 66, Oklahoma State 64
Bonnies only played seven guys; all of them played 20:00+.
Oklahoma State led by 10 with 12:58 left in game.
Cowboys shot 55% inside the arc, but still lost.

— Utah 77, Wake Forest 70
Deacons led by 10 at halftime.
Utah shot 55% inside arc, scored 1.17 points/possession.
7-foot senior Carlson scored 31 points, blocked five shots.

— Missouri 70, Minnesota 68

Favored Jaguars led 48-31 with 17:03 left in game.
As a team, South Alabama was 17-21 on the foul line.
6-6 West scored 31 points, was 15-22 on foul line.

Quote of the Day
“Certainly, the hire is important, and it needs to be somebody that understands the state of Texas, understands the history of Texas A&M and can communicate with young people and develop them. I think that’s where it starts. Strong leadership.”
Lions’ coach/Texas A&M alum Dan Campbell, after saying he wasn’t interested in becoming the Aggies’ next football coach

Friday’s quiz
In 1996, Cleveland Browns moved to Baltimore and re-branded as the Ravens; Vinny Testaverde was the Ravens’ QB that first season in Baltimore.

Saturday’s Den: Wrapping up a busy Friday of basketball

— There were lot of upsets Friday:
Long Beach State (+15) 94, Michigan 86
NC-Greensboro (+14.5) 78, Arkansas 72
Lindenwood (+9.5) 72, Neb-Omaha 70
Tenn-Martin (+8.5) 80, Eastern Kentucky 74
Notre Dame (+7.5) 66, Oklahoma State 64 OT
East Tennessee State (+6.5) 70, Davidson 68

— Myrtle Beach tournament:
Vermont 78, Saint Louis 68
Liberty 83, Wichita State 66

Sunday’s final is Vermont-Liberty, two solid mid-majors.

— Charleston Classic:
Dayton 88, St John’s 81
Houston 76, Utah 66

Sunday’s final is Dayton-Houston, which will feel like March.

— Bad Beat of the Night: Wm & Mary (+7.5) lost 80-71 in overtime to Air Force.

— Villanova 57, Maryland 40
Terps are off to a dismal 1-3 start, shooting 21.6% on the arc.
Villanova led this game 39-15 at halftime.
It is early in season, but Maryland is turning ball over 21.3% of time (#290).

— Statistical Oddity of the Day:
San Antonio Spurs lost 129-120 at home to Sacramento Friday, so obviously, they were minus-9 for the game.
When Zach Collins was on the floor, the Spurs were +19 (minus-28 without him)
When Victor Wembanyama was on the floor, the Spurs were minus-31 (+22 without him)
For two teammates to have a plus/minus 50 points different in the same game is really, really unusual.

— Word of the Day: continuity- something happening over a period of time without being changed or stopped.
Teams who have the same players over a period of time have an advantage over teams with a lot of new players, as long as the talent levels are similar.
On the college basketball page, I’ll mention continuity a lot; it is important in this era, where kids transfer at the drop of a hat.

— Bengals’ QB Joe Burrow tore ligaments in his thumb Thursday night, is out for the year, very bad news for 5-5 Cincinnati.

— Last three years, Rams are 0-9 in November; two years ago, they were 0-3 in November, then won the Super Bowl.

— NHL is playing some games in Sweden this week:
Ottawa 5, Detroit 4 OT- Senators blew a 4-0 lead, then won with 0:02 left in OT.
Toronto 3, Detroit 2- William Nylander has 25 points in Detroit’s 16 games.
They have two more games in Sweden this weekend.

— San Diego State 79, Saint Mary’s 54
Surprisingly one-sided game.
Aztecs led 34-33 at halftime.
Gaels also lost previous game, at home to Weber State; they were picked to win the WCC, but if they’re better than Gonzaga, WCC might be down a little this year, especially with BYU off to the Big X.

— Grand Canyon 76, San Francisco 72
Entertaining game between two good mid-majors.

— I’m watching the UNLV-Pepperdine game on ESPN+, and there is a commercial for a lawyer in Los Angeles, a younger guy who claims “I put the LIT in litigation!!!”
Very unusual commercial.

— UNLV 82, Pepperdine 68
UNLV has made at least one 3-point shot in their last 1,195 games, every game since the NCAA made the 3-point shot a real thing, 37 years ago. Princeton is the only other team to have a 3-pointer in every game since then; they’ve played fewer games than the Rebels.

Sunday’s 6-pack:
All-time passing yards leaders for the Cincinnati Bengals:
32,838 yards— Ken Anderson
31,594— Andy Dalton
27,149— Boomer Esiason
22,694— Carson Palmer
15,134— Jeff Blake
14,083— Joe Burrow

Quote of the Day
“That does mean a lot to be quite honest with you. Being at Purdue, we worked hard to win games. Getting to the Big Ten championship was as good as any accomplishment I had there, and we had some big wins. So, we come here, Year 1, to find a way to get to this championship game means a whole lot.
It just shows that if you’re willing to put in the work, surround yourself with good people, allow others to buy in and work together, take the blame when things aren’t going well, good things can normally happen.”
Louisville coach Jeff Brohm

Sunday’s quiz
Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh was an NFL QB for 14 years, playing for four different teams; what team did he play the most games with?

Saturday’s quiz
Luxor Hotel/Casino in Las Vegas is shaped like a pyramid.

Friday’s quiz
In 1996, Cleveland Browns moved to Baltimore and re-branded as the Ravens; Vinny Testaverde was the Ravens’ QB that first season in Baltimore.

Sunday’s Den: Wrapping up a college football Saturday……..

Before we start, why the BLEEP is Alabama playing Chattanooga in football?
Why would one of the best programs in the country play a I-AA team?
Do they charge less for tickets to this game, which ended 66-10?
(I know, they probably don’t)
Seriously, play a Sun Belt team, play a MAC team, play a service academy team or some other stiff, but for Pete’s sake, DO NOT play a freakin’ I-AA team. It is spineless.

— New Mexico State 31, Auburn 10
Boosters at Auburn ain’t going to be happy with this score.
From 2018-21, New Mexico State was 8-30 SU.
In two years under Jerry Kill, Aggies are 16-9- they’ve covered 9 in a row.
Auburn is 6-5; they play Alabama next. Oy.

— UCLA 38, USC 20
Trojans lost five of last six games, after a 6-0 start.
USC allowed 34+ points in each of their last eight games.
UCLA is 7-4, will be favored next week; does this save Chip Kelly’s job?

— UNLV 31, Air Force 27
UNLV trailed 27-14 at halftime; AF didn’t score in 2nd half.
Rebels averaged 11.7 yards/pass attempt.
UNLV plays San Jose State next week; they could go to MW title game.
No matter what, Rebels are going bowling for first time since 2013.

— Louisville 38, Miami 31

Louisville threw 58-yard TD pass with 4:17 left for game-winning TD.
Cardinals will play in ACC title game for first time (vs Florida State)
Last year, Jeff Brohm led Purdue to their first Big 14 title game- good coach.
Miami is 6-5, 11-12 in two years under Mario Cristobal.

— Florida State also played a I-AA team this week, North Alabama; Seminoles’ QB Jordan Travis hurt his ankle and is done for the season. Big loss for Florida State.

— Appalachian State 26, James Madison 23 OT
First loss of the season for James Madison.
JMU tied game on an 11-yard TD pass with 0:57 left.

— Upsets of the Week:
New Mexico State (+25.5) 31, Auburn 10
Appalachian State 26 (+9), James Madison 23 OT
UCLA (+6.5) 38, USC 20
Old Dominion (+6) 20, Georgia Southern 17
Michigan State (+4) 24, Indiana 21
Army (+4) 28, Coastal Carolina 21

— Word of the Day: Loyalty- a sense of duty or devoted attachment to something or someone.

— SMU 38, Memphis 34
Mustangs threw for 286 yards (12.4 yards/attempt).
SMU is 9-2, 7-0 in the AAC.

— Tulane 24, Florida Atlantic 8
Tulane has won nine games in a row, four of them by 7 or less points.
Green Wave is 10-1, 7-0 in the AAC

— Iowa 15, Illinois 13
Sixth straight Iowa game to stay under the total.
Hawkeyes scored winning TD on a 30-yard run with 4:43 left.
First score of the game was a safety for Iowa.

— Arizona 42, Utah 18
From 2018-22, Arizona was 15-38; this year? 8-3, with five straight wins.
Arizona blocked punt for TD, led 21-0 after first quarter.
Wildcats converted 7-11 third down plays.

— Washington 22, Oregon State 20
11-0 Huskies led 22-10 at halftime, hung on for the win.
Neither team completed half their passes.
Beavers ran 73 plays, Washington 48, but OSU had three turnovers.

— Texas Tech 24, UCF 23
Down 23-17, UCF scored TD with 5:30 left; the PAT was blocked.
Knights led 14-0 after the first quarter.
UCF was 8-14 on third down, Tech 3-9.
Red Raiders are bowl eligible; UCF needs another win.

Tuesday’s 6-pack:

Interesting college football spreads for this week:
— Missouri (-7) @ Arkansas
— Air Force @ Boise State (-4)
— Oregon State @ Oregon (-13)
— Florida State (-7) @ Florida
— Kentucky @ Louisville (-7)
— Clemson (-9) @ South Carolina

Quote of the Day
“I think he should go back to Division III football where he belongs. Look, this guy. Look at his resume, man. I mean, I’m sorry. He spent one year coordinating a team that my wife could coach with Aaron Donald and all those guys. Stop it. And trust me, she’d do a hell of a lot better job than this guy’s doing with his defense. They’re the second-highest payroll in the National Football League and they’re the second-worst. Like, this team is atrocious.”
ESPN’s Rex Ryan, talking about Chargers coach Brandon Staley

Tuesday’s quiz #1
The last time the Angels made the baseball playoffs was 2014; what team swept them in the divisional round?

Tuesday’s quiz #2
Who is the all-time leading in passing yardage for the Rams?

Sunday’s quiz
Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh was an NFL QB for 14 years, playing for four different teams; he played the most games (89) with the Chicago Bears, 53 more with the Colts.

***************************************************

Tuesday’s Den: Nobody asked me, but…….

— ESPN needs to bring Jon Gruden out of retirement to do the interviews he does with QB prospects for the NFL Draft. This is going to be a fascinating year for drafting QB’s, and Gruden is the best I’ve seen at grilling kids and learning what they’re about.

Eagles 21, Chiefs 17
Kansas City led 17-7 at halftime.
Swift ran ball 12 times for 76 yards and a TD.
Eagles won nine of first ten games (6-2-2 ATS)
Hurts is 34-14 as an NFL starter.
Chiefs in first half: 38 plays, 200 yards, 17 points.
Chiefs in 2nd half: 37 plays, 137 yards, no points.
Last three games, KC was outscored 38-0 in second half.
Chiefs averaged only 3.8 yards/pass attempt.

— Next football season, I’m going to change the definition of turnover in my stats, to include teams who go for it on 4th down outside of field goal range and don’t get the first down. It is basically the same as a turnover, maybe worse.
Chargers-Packers game, both teams went for it in 4th down around midfield on their first series of the game, and both failed. I know it is 2023 and all, but field position is still important.

— 45 years ago Sunday was the infamous Joe Pisarcik fumble, when the Giants were going to beat the Eagles in a close game, but teams didn’t take a knee at the end back then, they just handed the ball off to a RB, but Pisarcik fumbled the handoff, and Herm Edwards ran the ball into the end zone for a very unlikely, disturbing loss for the Giants.
As a Rams fan, the game turned out to be oddly significant; Dick Vermeil was coaching the Eagles back then; 23 years later, he won a Super Bowl coaching the Rams.
Back then, John McVay was coaching the Giants, Sean McVay’s grandfather.

— Cleveland Browns signed QB Joe Flacco to be a backup for Dorian Thompson-Robinson; Flacco has played 15 years in the NFL— he started four games for the Jets last year.
From 2010-12, he went 40-16 as the Ravens’ QB, winning the Super Bowl 11 years ago, but since 2019, he is 3-14 as an NFL starter. Lot of experience, though.

— Jets are benching Zach Wilson, he won’t even be the backup this week. Tim Boyle (0-3 as an NFL starter) will get the start, with Trevor Siemian the backup.

— Falcons will start QB Desmond Ridder this week; Taylor Heinicke started Atlanta’s last couple games.

— Cowboys’ DB DaRon Bland has four pick-6 touchdowns this year, giving him as many TD’s this season as the Raiders’ star WR Davante Adams.

— We need an LSU-Iowa bowl matchup; under is 10-2 in Iowa games, over is 11-0 in LSU games.
Iowa played three games in a row that ended 15-6/12-10/10-7.
LSU lost a game 55-49, won other games 49-39/52-35.
Contrast of styles make for interesting bowls.

— USC’s football team the last two years:
2022- 11-3, they were +21 in turnovers
2023- 7-5, they’re minus-2 in turnovers.

— There are ten I-A college football coaches who are the head coach at their alma mater.

— Word of the Day: Doppelgänger- A double of a person; having a keen resemblance between two otherwise unrelated people.
Example: Lakers’ GM Rob Pelinka and the actor Rob Lowe.

— Happy birthday to the great actress Sally Field, who turned 77 last week; she was the star of The Flying Nun when I was a kid, kind of a weird show. She’s won two Academy Awards, and recently played the mother of Lakers’ owner Jerry Buss in HBO’s Winning Time.
Happy 79th birthday to Danny DeVito, who was Louis DePalma in Taxi and was great in Other People’s Money and The Rainmaker. Now we see him all the time in Jersey Mike’s commercials.

Long Beach State 94, Michigan 86
This win helps raise the Big West’s profile.
Illinois State 61, Long Beach State 52
This loss doesn’t raise the Big West’s profile.

San Diego State 100, Washington 97, OT
This game was played late Sunday night, after I had posted yesterday’s Den.
Aztecs led by 12 with 4:23 left in regulation; they blew that lead, but won in OT- they were 31-41 on the foul line. Washington was 18-21.

— Washington-Washington State won’t be in the same league anymore after this season, but the good news is, the schools agreed to play each other in football every year thru 2028, with next year’s Apple Cup game in Seattle, then the next four years at campus sites.

— Syracuse fired football coach Dino Babers, who went 41-55 coaching the Orange; he had gone 18-9 in two seasons at Bowling Green, but couldn’t parlay that success into winning in the ACC.

— Phillies signed P Aaron Nola to a 7-year deal worth around $24.5M a year.

— This is a great week for college basketball, lot of good tournaments, but I do miss the Great Alaskan Shootout, which used to always be this week. ESPN killed the event by hosting their tournaments in warm weather places, more appealing for players/fans to go to.
But the Alaskan Shootout was unique; the last first round game the first two nights would begin around 2am here in the east, so you could watch ball all night.
Dwyane Wade, Klay Thompson were both MVP’s of the Shootout; one year, Cincinnati beat Duke in the final— they attracted really good teams. It was fun to watch.

Tennessee 73, Syracuse 56
Last time Jim Boeheim wasn’t the Syracuse coach, I was in 10th grade, long time ago; they play man-to-man defense now, and try to run more. Syracuse shot 35% in this game, which isn’t going to win many games, especially against good teams.

Purdue 73, Gonzaga 63
Boilers outscored Gonzaga 43-28 in second half.
Zags were 6-32 behind the arc.
Purdue big guy Edey had 25 points, 14 rebounds.

Kentucky 96, St Joe’s 88, OT
Underdog Hawks made 15-37 on the arc.
Kentucky outscored Hawks 18-9 on foul line.
Wildcats played eight guys, including five frosh and a sophomore.
