I'm sure this.has been addressed but commenting as I go but this to me is a crazy statement

You can disagree with me and that's fine but it's not a crazy statement. What I said was that the punishment if something or somebody was hit due to someone driving reckless would be harsh and include mandatory jail time. The deterrent would be the punishment. All current traffic laws would become recommendations to be looked at to determine recklessness if someone or something got hit. Would you drive fast knowing if you hit something you would go to jail? It makes more sense if you think it through. Would old people keep driving at age 80+ if they knew they could face mandatory jail time for driving recklessly? No, they would quit driving when they knew their skills diminished. The roads would be safer and driving fast, testing or talking on the phone while driving would be almost nonexistent. People would focus on driving carefully and would drive defensively because they would be scared about going to jail.

The current system, using cash fines as a punishment doesn't stop speeding. Speeding is rampant. The vast majority of cars at any time on a highway are speeding. The goal of the current system is to collect revenue and not to stop speeding. If the goal was safety, and not revenue collection, the goal would be to stop the speeding completely. However, local governments like the current system as they can collect hundreds of thousands of dollars on a whim by busting speeders going 1-5 mph over the speed limit. go try and fight a speeding ticket in court. The prosecutor will quickly drop the points to your license but will almost never drop the fines and court costs. If safety was the goal and not revenue collection the opposite would be true.

What I propose is to punish actual criminals that injure somebody or something. I don't believe victimless crimes should be illegal. People need to start taking responsibility for themselves and not constantly have to be told how to do everything by the government. The current US government is an over reaching nanny state.

The system that I propose would cut down the budget of the government nationwide by hundreds of millions of dollars a year. Many fewer cops and judges would be needed as their current jobs consist almost entirely of dealing with traffic tickets. Also, many of the issues regarding violence between cops and drivers would go away as there would be far fewer police encounters with drivers.

If what I'm proposing was the current system in the US, you would likely support it. Why you call it crazy is because it is foreign to you. What's really crazy to me is you support a current traffic system whose intent is not safety but revenue collection.

Well said but I did find this funny about the system in Costa Rica.

I didn't see anybody focusing on driving carefully in CR. Nope.

Hahaha. You are right. The system in Costa Rica is an entirely different story though. There is no punishment at all and therefore, no deterrent.
