CBB Free Selection for Wednesday

Sport/Type: CBB / Side

Game: (607) Virginia Tech vs. (608) Maryland

Time: 9:00 PM EST

Line: Maryland -8.5

Rating: TWO-Star

Selection: (608) MARYLAND TERRAPINS -8.5

Analysis:

The Terps will host the Hokies on Wednesday night in College Park looking to avenge a loss to this Tech team back on January 12th in Blacksburg. The Hokies took that game 67 to 66 but the Terps felt like they gave that one away. They opened the first half by turning the ball over 7 times in the first eight minutes. Not only did they turn the ball over but they missed nine of their first ten shots to start the game. Since the start of February the Terps have made an effort to continue their season while the Hokies appear to be just waiting for it to end. Maryland has gotten improved play from guards Vasquez and Hayes but the real change has been the play of forward James Gist who averages 16 points per game and 8 rebounds but his points per game has jumped to 20 since January 19th. While the offensively challenged Hokies rank 11th in the ACC in scoring and 3-point FG percentage with only 69 points per game and a below average 33% from three point land. We expect the Terps to get out to a quick start and not fall into the trap that cost them the game the last time these two met. Maryland is 19-6 ATS when playing against a team with a winning record after 15 or more games and 11-1 ATS in February games over the last 2 seasons. The Hokies are 1-5 ATS their last 6 conference road games played during the month of February since last year and 1-9 ATS after scoring 25 points or less in the first half of their last game over the last 2 seasons. Lay the points with the host as the Terps exact their revenge

Tonight we will go with Wisconsin minus the small number at Illinois. The Badgers have rebounded nicely after their home loss to Purdue with a pair of conference wins and covers, and Bo Ryan's gang is a positive 6-3 against the spread on the road this season.
Illinois has dropped 4 of their last 5 both straight up, and against the spread, and the Illini are a money-burning 3-8-1 against the spread at home this season.
Looking at the series numbers, it is Wisconsin that has reeled off the last three meetings, covering in two of those three.
With the road team having covered in 6 of the last 8, we have no issue laying a few points with the Badgers on the road tonight.
Play on Bucky Badger in this Big 10 showdown.

5♦ WISCONSIN

PGA

Take Jonathan Byrd over Ernie Els (13-8), 1/6 unit:

Els only has a .429 winning percentage in this tournament. But there?s something more to this pick. I see Els as a bit of a tragic figure, born at the wrongtime. We saw the latest example of this in Dubai, where Els plunked his ball in the water and Tiger won.You don?t look at the guy and think: killer instinct. And this tournament is about killer instinct. It?s about putting your opponent away when you have the chance, not giving it to him. Byrd?s never played in this tournament, so we don?t have anything to draw on there. But he?s been playing well the last year or so,including a win at the John Deere. If this upset happens, it would be somewhere between George Mason beating Michigan State and George Mason beating Connecticut in the 2006 NCAA tournament in terms of magnitude. Take Arron Oberholser over Mike Weir (13-8), 1/6 unit:Oberholser has only one win and three losses at the Accenture but Weir?s not much better with six wins and seven losses. Oberholser?s been off the radar and hasn?t played this year. He had back and hand problems last year but still had a pretty good year, with five top-10s and almost $2 million in earnings. So he?s a real wild card on the health front and the fact that he hasn?t played since last October. Weir?s been playing well enough to win this season and maybe the format will help him but he was playing well last year prior to this tournament and lost in the first round to Paul Casey. Last week Weir missed the cut at the Northern Trust Open. Take Mark Calcavecchia over Aaron Baddeley (6-5), 1/6unit: Calc?s won four and lost four in Accenture?spast. Baddeley?s won two and lost one. It?s been up and down in ?08 for Calc so far with T10, 68, MC, MCand a T20 in Arizona. Bads has also been inconsistent with T12, MC, T13, MC and a T46 last week in L.A. This match is another toss up---I?m going with theunderdog.

February Record 18-6
Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

Today's Lock: Atlanta Hawks +6

The Hawks just traded for Mike Bibby. Now Bibby gets to play against his former team in Sacramento. Atlanta is making a playoff run. Sacramento is throwing in the towel on this season. The Hawks were blown out by the Lakers last night; they will not be blown out two games in a row. Hawks will cover tonight

2-Unit Play. #539 Take Wisconsin Green Bay -2 over Youngstown State (7 pm)

The Phoenix have cashed eight of the last ten meetings against the number when facing YSU, and the Penguins have struggled losing nine of their last ten in conference play. Wisconsin Green Bay will have the best player on the floor in Mike Schachtner, and he'll lead his team to their sixth straight win in this series.

5-Unit Play. #621 Take Charleston +1.5 over Elon (7 pm)

Charleston have made this series one-sided in recent memory. They are 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings, and these four victories have come by an average margin of victory of 17 points. The College of Charleston is 10-2 ATS in its last 12 games following an ATS loss. And here is another one in the series that goes to better team, and again that will be the Cougars.

5-Unit Play. #593 Take North Texas -1.5 over Louisiana Monroe (8:30 pm)

The Mean Green jumped all over UL Monore in the first meeting via a 21-point win. North Texas is far and wide a stronger team than the Warhawks, and there isn't enough to prevent them from a season sweep. The Mean Green are 9-4 ATS in their last 13 road games and they have covered their last three conference games as well. In this one they get their 17th win and climb above .500 in league play with the victory.

3-Unit Play. #601 Take New Mexico -2.5 over Air Force (9 pm)

The Lobos held serve at home over Air Force by 15, and now after four straight wins by double figures, New Mexico is really rolling. The Falcons have failed to score 60 points in five of their last six games, and that's not going to cut it against a high scoring, up-and-down team like the Lobos. We'll see New Mexico continue their strong push in Mountain West play with a nice road cover in this one.

Detroit Pistons (39-14) at Milwaukee Bucks (19-34)

The Pistons 10-game winning streak came to an end with Tuesday's 103-85 defeat to the Magic, but should get back to a winning path tonight when they square off against the Bucks in Milwaukee. Detroit has won five straight and 10 of the last 12 meetings versus Milwaukee. Go with the Pistons to take their fourth straight road victory and fourth against the Bucks at the Bradley Center. The dismal Bucks have lost eight of their last 10 games, including last four at home.
