I don't drink, either, but I go to bars once in a while.

It's entertaining to come here. I like to read, and see how the old gang is doing. I still cap games now, and again, and might crawl back into it at a later date.....just not now. For the time being, I can't risk money on gambling. Too many other things need the attention of my money.

To my original point, I was just curious as to what the guys here wagered.

Sports wagering is something that has interested me for years. The fact that I no longer wager shouldn't mean that I have to distance myself from forums, should it. Guys retire from sports every day. Does that mean they can't have an interest in that sport anymore?

I don't know what else to tell you, fann.

I think that stopping gambling would be easier for me to do than to stop coming here.

One question, yyz

I know that you do enjoy the process of handicapping and still do it without the wagering aspect. Do you enjoy winning or losing games that you handicapped more? I think I would hope I lost like I do when I miss the cutoff to the game and don't get down on the game. Just wondering.

I am college student so I do not have the money to lay down like some but I generally bet $20-$30 per game. I am have to be very strict with the money since I do not have any income, so like a huge game for me would be to lay $50.

Actually, the largest single bet I have ever made is $100 and that was last year in college basketball.

Generally, though I do bet a lot of games. I like to spread the risk. I will bet on Saturday anywhere from 10 to 20 games.

Is a unit the same as a johnson? So a big unit equals a big johnson. Accordingly, my standard johnson was $1,000. Biggest bet several years ago was 14 johnsons on a baseball game. I had a problem.

Actually, y, I quit gambling 3 months ago. Been going to GA since May. Although they suggest staying away from people, places and things associated with gambling, I still enjoy watching the goings on over here without betting.

Good luck to all,
Eddie

100-500 a game here. Have had too many "Bourbon Blurs" that have cost me large weeks on double or nothing plays.

I will never learn!!! Pass the Scotch ;)

BBC,

As odd as it might sound, I enjoy the feeling of being correct in handicapping a game, whether there is money on the line, or not.

Plus, there is the added relief of knowing I didn't lose a penny when the play goes south. I never wagered enough for the money to make a huge impact one way or the other, so I believe the thrill of winning has always meant more than the thrill of winning "money".

I pondered redsfann's post all day, as to why I should even be here if I don't gamble. For the life of me, it doesn't seem the least bit odd that I should be here. As I said, I love the thought of picking a game here and there, and breaking it down. You tell me that you don't get a great measure of satisfaction when a game ends up just as you handicapped it?

Plus, I always handicap better, when I don't have my back against the wall. You know.......5 losers in arow, and now yuo feel that you "must" get a win. I remember not thinking too straight during those times, and forcing plays, or talking myself out of them.

I am quite content in the land of "mythical wagering", where I have no risk, but still get great rewards.

Thanks for the reply. There is inherent reward in using analytical skills to logically form an opinion on a future event. The fact that it involves sports makes it more enjoyable.

It can't be just about money, because there are some many easier ways to make a greater amount of money than we do in gambling on sports. For the time put in, the return on investment isn't that high.

If I was broke, I don't think I'd leave Jack's place (unless the computer had to be pawned).

That's the reply that I thought I'd get from you when I asked, YYZ. I, too, get the same thrill from being right about my handicapping whether or not I have real money on it, or I'm trying to win an autographed baseball at one of the free sites.

I am fortunate to have a good job and a wife that has a great one, no kids and no bills other than a mortgage and the monthly ones like power, phone, etc-- which allows me to wager real money-- AFTER my SEP and Roth IRAs and other retirement accounts are fully funded, of course; and my fridge is fully stocked with malted beverages.......:D

So, you ever play Whistling Straights? Noticed your a golfer--heck, you're all of 1/2 hour a way, whereas I'm 5.5 or so. Also, is that course there in Fond Du Lac-- the one out on the Southwest part of town-- where 151 comes into town-- is that course open to the public? From what I can see of it, it looks like a decent track.....

I've played Black Wolf, but not WS.

The course on 151 is called Rolling Meadows, and it is my home course. Played it tonight in league. It has 27 holes, and is pretty nice for a public course.

The holes you see, are on the Blue nine (19-27)

Runs $13 for 9 holes, and $22 for 18.......a great bargain.

XYZ your right about capping without the stress of funds coming into play.
I was at the track (Maine fair season here, Union Fair) and just watching the horse's warmimg for the race. No program, no looking at the tote board, just watching the horse's strides and how the jokey was handling the horse. Watched 4 race's, picked 4 winners (no bets). Did the same for the last race, ran to the window before post, tossed down a $20 Q, and nailed it for a 77.00 profit walking out the door.
I've always been so busy studying the programs that I've never spent time watching the horses I was betting. Go figure

Well,

My standard unit is $100 and I stay with that till I fall below 48%
If that happens I'll up to $125 till I can crawl back to 52%.....then back to a buck............Will bet a dime or more, only if its a part of winnings!!!!!!!!

I have not bet since UCONN/ Maryland in hoops.....but still stop by each day (almost) to see whats new...Other interests and little time.........

Been busy as hell rehabbing a rental property....
And playing the market...
Summer has been good to me ...BUT
I will not stray.........$100 per and a little more if I've been cold.

Eddie Haskell.....congrats bro!!!!!!!!!on recognizing a problem and doing something about it!!!!!!!!

Like the consensus.....learn a lot......IN baseball I am down 8 grand and in LAST place after being on page 1 a month ago. I come every day to play EVERY UNDERDOG and EVERY UNDER
closing in on 2000 bets (all 200) and down 8 G..... Thought I might find an easy way to play bball. Apparently NOT!

Interesting.....DOGS are DUE !....you baseball bettors. Chalk has been too strong...

Oh well, F O O T B A L L.......here we go! Bet UCONN in all games
as dog of 21 pts or more this year. Recent record at that price is 6-1 I believe.....they will run better this year .....are much deeper...more talented and ..........sheeeit...whos afraid of BC, GTech, Miami

 just play em!

BBC maybe I asked the question wrong. There is a reason that yyz decided to no longer bet (money? gambling problem?) but whatever the reason is it seems to me that hanging out at these forums will make things worse. I know for a fact that one of the 12 step programs (had a relative that was a compulsive drinker) is that you don't go near anyplace where the activity is being condoned. Mind you if yyz has decided to stop wagering for other reasons then of course I'm an idiot :p

Myron,

I stopped, because my money can be used better. I never had a "stash", just for wagering. I would send a few hundred over when i had it, and play til it was gone, or I decided to get a check. More often than not......it was gone!

Sure, it was nice to run up the cash, get a nice pay day, and treat myself to something nice, but after a while, I decided that I was spending too much.

I never went into debt, but when I lost, I would think of how foolish it is to lose that money, when I could have purchased something with it. I used to look at it as entertainment, but it became anything but entertaining to lose my money!:D

I still get a huge thrill out of handicapping, but don't do near enough to be serious about actually risking cash. That was another reason for stopping. If you can't allocate proper time for this, then you might as well flip a coin!

Also, I was spending to little time with the people who are important to me. Add all these things up, and you have my reasoning for not wagering anymore.

I find it funny for people to ask, "Why come here, if you don't gamble?" The reason I find it funny, is because I think there are a lot of people here who do not bet, or bet very little. I might be the only one who admits it! (This was the reason for this thread.)

The football contest Jack is having, has far less entrants in it than expected. Why? The prize money is great, and football is the most handicapped sport in here, right?

I remember emailing Jack right after he announced the contest. I said this would not get as many people as he thought. I certainly didn't hope that, but I felt that way. If the contest was free, there would be 500 signed up! But, you are required to 'post up' $500 or $250 for half the prize money, and I believe that shoots down a ton of people here. And, the money is still yours to bet with! So, if guys are sending cash off shore anyway, why not send it out for the contest? To me, there are only a couple of reasons, and the forerunner is that they don't have that money to begin with.

So, again, I think there are plenty of guys here who don't gamble.

(By the way........I will be getting into the contest, because I can't pass up a shot at that kind of loot! I will need to be very select in my wagers, as I do not want to piss that post up money away, but I will take my cash out as soon as I meet the criteria for the contest.....If I have any left! I do not need gambling, and walking away was not a hard thing for me to do.)

I know the last paragraph contradicts a lot of things I have stated, but as I said, this is a special situation.

I hope I answered all the questions put to me.

I bet you're right yyz. And yes, I'm one of those who bets very little. Right now, my units are zero because I am not gambling. And quite simply, I don't have enough extra money to send it somewhere offshore at this time. When I am betting, my units are $10. Yup, that's it -- $10. I'm a college student, so that's all I am comfortable with. For me to really hammer a game is to put $50 on it. But then again, that $50 means just as much to me personally as $5,000 does to some people.

See yyz, you're not the only one who still comes here and doesn't gamble.
