My wife took a fall in the kitchen yesterday and broke her wrist. It's a pretty bad break and is on her left wrist and she is left handed. Apparently she does quite a bit around here as I am finding out.

Four and half hour wait to get an Ortho guy in the ER yesterday. I could of flown the guy in from Miami to Boston. They were not busy they didn't have a Ortho. They kept telling us it will be about 30 minutes while she laid there bone over bone. When he finally showed he was a Doctors Assistant. Do I get a discount?

Anyway he set it and wrapped it all up in a soft cast. He said she will need a hard cast when they check it next week. She may or may not need surgery we don't know yet. She slept good last night but was in pain this morning. I gave her the pain med and it put her out.

I dunno whats going on in America today. I live in a middle class suburb of Boston. Good town. Hospital ER is thrown for a loop because someone comes in with a break? I first went to Urgent Care and they said it was too complicated a break for them. Then when I am trying to get the pain med a lady about my age, in her 60's, not a spring chicken, asked if I could give her a few of the Oxycodones I was getting.

StevieD, The craziness is only BEGINNING to appear. Imo, we haven't seen any kind of uncontrollable situation....yet. But most everyone can sense the impending force of evil. It's on it's way and it's not stopping. If the presidential candidates are any indicator....hold onto the bar.

Damn man, sorry to hear. Emergency rooms are always a huge hassle. Hopefully the pain subsides and she doesn't need surgery.

Nick M works in the ER, so he will be the expert here. Here's what I know. In general, ERs are overrun by people who don't need to be there. They either don't have emergencies or their problems (usually psych related) have never been properly treated in the past.

Specialists are often scarce especially on the weekends. Possibly the ortho surgeon on call there was busy in surgery. The best bet for specialists whether it be ortho, neuro, even ENT is to go to a big teaching hospital if u have one available.

They were not busy. We saw the ER doctor quiet a bit. They never said the Ortho surgeon was in surgery they kept saying we paged him, it will be about 30 minutes etc.

I agree that the big hospital ER's are full of people who have colds etc and do not belong there. But they have no where else to go in most cases. That was why I did not go to Mass General...we would still be there.

I did not think he could be in surgery but they never said that either. Don't get me wrong, we did not get into a shouting match or anything. But after a couple of hours I asked quite a few times and all I ever got was it will be within the hour or 30 minutes or whatever.

Hope she heals fast. At the hospital I'm in now, if the patient gets a room within 12 hours, that is considered fast. Going to the ER is usually a bad experience. E no longer means emergency.

I'm not quite sure what you want to hear. Do you think he was upstairs in the on-site surgeon entertainment villa just hanging out and laughing about your 30 minute estimates? He was busy with other patients. He probably was in surgery. Some surgeries, especially in orthopedics, can have a huge range in case time. What may seem like a simple 2 hour surgery can stretch to 4-5 and they don't know it until they get in the mix. When he was paged he may have thought he could get to you in 30 minutes. Then other more pressing stuff can come up. It's called triage- the other treatment needs may have exceeded your wife's wrist on their level of urgency. Good grief.

I just assume this is usually the case. If you have to go to the emergency room you may as well write off the weekend. You ain't ever getting in and out of there quickly.

I usually just Google whatever is wrong and try to fix it myself.
