Monday’s 6-pack:
Major League leaders in home runs:

43— Matt Olson, Atl
39— Pete Alonso, NYM
35— Kyle Schwarber, Phil
34— Betts LA, Robert CWS, Soler Miami
32— Adolis Garcia, Tex

Quote of the Day
“That’s week-to-week right now. We’re hoping that he can have a chance for Week 1. He ended up straining his quad last week in practice. We’ll see how his body reacts to it.”
49ers’ coach Kyle Shanahan, speaking about his kicker’s injury

Monday’s quiz
Where did Larry Bird play his college basketball?

Sunday’s quiz
Buck Showalter was Arizona’s manager when they walked Barry Bonds intentionally with the bases loaded in the 9th inning of a game Arizona led 8-6
The next hitter (Matt Williams) lined out to RF, Arizona won 8-7.

Saturday’s quiz
Bob Brenly managed the Arizona Diamondbacks when they won their only World Series title; he is now a TV analyst on Arizona’s games.

Monday’s Den: Wrapping up a sports weekend

— Next April, when they have the NFL Draft, one of the big QB prospects is going to be Sam Hartman, who is Notre Dame’s QB this year, after playing at Wake Forest for five years.
I keep thinking about this, the Al Pacino speech from Any Given Sunday, when he is talking to Jamie Foxx about his role as the Sharks’ QB:
“You’re a goddamn quarterback! You know what that means? It’s the top spot, kid. It’s the guy who takes the fall. It’s the guy everybody’s looking at first – the leader of a team – who will support you when they understand you. Who will break their ribs and their noses and their necks for you, because they believe. ‘Cause you make them believe. That’s a quarterback.”
Hartman played five years for Wake Forest, which went 38-24 in those seasons, playing in a bowl all five seasons. He jumps to Notre Dame, which went 53-11 those five years, albeit with Brian Kelly at coach for four of those seasons- he’s at LSU now.
My question is this; if you run an NFL franchise, you going to to risk your job and your 7-figure salary by drafting a kid to be your QB, when he jumped ship on his college team?
It is an interesting situation that will play out over the next eight months.

— Raiders’ kicker Daniel Carlson kicked a 62-yard field goal Saturday night in Dallas.

— Arizona State won’t play in a bowl game in 2023 after self-imposing a one-year bowl ban this weekend, a decision that points out the severity of the evidence in the ongoing NCAA case against the school’s football program.
Herm Edwards got fired last year; the new coach is 33-year old Kenny Dillingham, who comes to ASU from Oregon. Dillingham has a thing in his contract that says for every year the Sun Devils aren’t bowl eligible or on probation for stuff that Edwards’ staff did, he gets an extra year on his contract, so Dillingham’s five-year contract just became a six-year deal.

— Over the last 29 years, only one team that lost the Super Bowl got back to the Super Bowl the next season, the 2018 Patriots.

— There will be 42 bowl games this college football season; as recently as 1982, there were only 15 bowl games played.

— Movie of the Day— Love Happens (2009)— A self-help guru writes a book about coping with loss; he falls for the hotel florist at his seminar in Seattle, only to realize that he hasn’t yet truly confronted his wife’s death, which is why he wrote the book.
Aaron Eckhart is the self-help guy, Jennifer Aniston is the florist, Martin Sheen plays Eckhart’s father-in-law, the dad of the woman who died.
Very good movie, some funny moments, some sad moments. If Martin Sheen is in a movie, chances are it is a good one.

— NFL Trend of the Day— last four years, Buffalo is 8-2-1 ATS as a road underdog.

— Notre Dame 42, Navy 3
Total yardage: 444-171
Navy ran ball 47 times for 128 yards— they threw 7 passes.

— Jacksonville State 17, UTEP 14
UTEP outgained the Gamecocks, 364-277
UTEP was minus-3 in turnovers.

— UMass 41, New Mexico State 30
Taisun Phommachanh, a transfer QB who also played at Georgia Tech and Clemson, completed 10 of 17 passes for 192 yards and added 92 yards running for the Minutemen.

— San Diego State 20, Ohio U 13
Ohio U outgained the Aztecs, 380-309.
Bobcats, however threw 3 INTs, were minus-2 in turnovers.
Aztecs’ QB Mayden was 17-27/164 with two TD’s passing.

— Vanderbilt 35, Hawai’i 28
Vandy ran a kickoff back 97 yards for a TD.
Red flag: Vandy ran ball 23 times for 44 yards. Not good for an SEC team.
Commodores are now 3-11 ATS in last 14 home games.

— USC 56, San Jose State 28
Trojans led only 21-14 at halftime.
Total yardage: USC, 502-396
Caleb Williams was 18-25/278 passing, with four TD’s.

— Louisiana Tech 22, FIU 17
FIU led 14-0 early on; they scored on a 67-yard TD run.
For the game, FIU completed 5-14 passes, for four yards. 4 yards. Four.
Tech QB Bachmeier was 34-44/333 passing.

— If the baseball playoffs started today (they don’t):
NL: Braves, Brewers, Dodgers. Wild Cards: Phillies, Arizona, Cubs
AL: Orioles, Twins, Mariners. Wild Cards: Rays, Rangers, Astros

Tuesday’s 6-pack:
Some college football spreads this week:
— Nebraska @ Minnesota (-7)
— North Carolina (-2.5) vs South Carolina
— Florida @ Utah (-6.5)
— California (-6.5) @ North Texas
— Northern Illinois @ Boston College (-9)
— Louisville (-8) @ Georgia Tech

Quote of the Day
“I ain’t a fool. I can read the room. I know what it is. It’s a business, and if you ain’t performing, you ain’t going to be able to play. So, for me it’s just go out there, perform at a high level or you don’t play. That’s what it is.”
QB PJ Walker, who got cut the Bears Monday

Tuesday’s quiz
What QB has thrown for the most yards in Houston Texans’ history?
Hint: he played there from 2007-13.

Monday’s quiz
Larry Bird played his college basketball at Indiana State; originally he went to Indiana, but he transferred out of there, worked for a while, then went to play for the Sycamores.

Sunday’s quiz
Buck Showalter was Arizona’s manager when they walked Barry Bonds intentionally with the bases loaded in the 9th inning of a game Arizona led 8-6
The next hitter (Matt Williams) lined out to RF, Arizona won 8-7.

*************************************************

Tuesday’s Den: Nobody asked me, but……..

— Astros 13, Red Sox 5
Red Sox led this game 4-3 after five innings.
Jose Altuve hit for the cycle for the first time in his great career; he is the first Astro to hit for the cycle since Brandon Barnes, in 2013.
Yordan Alvarez went 4-4 with 4 RBI, and two walks.

— This was Altuve’s 36th 4-hit game, he’s never had a 5-hit game.
Players with the most 4-hit games who never had a 5-hit game:
53— Lou Gehrig
36— Altuve
34— Mel Ott
33— Larry Walker

— Padres 4, Cardinals 1
Blake Snell went seven innings for the win; it is only the 2nd time all season that Snell got an out after the 6th inning.
He is having a fine season……..11-9, 2.60 in 27 starts, but he gets an average of only 16.5 outs per game, not a lot for an ace.

— Speaking of the Padres, the last nine years, they’ve come within 18 games of first place in the NL West one time, and that was in 2020, the shortened pandemic year.
San Diego’s payroll this year is $254,538,326 and they’re still only 62-70. How does ownership keep GM AJ Preller around? Why does he still have a job?

— Rangers 4, Mets 3— Nathaniel Lowe’s 2-run single in the ninth inning gave Texas their come from behind win, just their second win in their last 11 games.
Rangers had been 0-47 this season when they trailed after eight innings; now they’re 1-47.

— Braves 14, Rockies 4— Ronald Acuna went 4-5, with four runs scored, five RBI; couple fans ran into rightfield and hugged Acuna during the game, actually knocked him down. Not a great night for the security folks in Denver; it could’ve been a bad situation.

— Movie of the Day— Moneyball (2011)— Movie documents the Oakland A’s effort to assemble a baseball team on a small budget by employing computer-generated analysis to get new players.
Brad Pitt plays A’s GM Billy Beane; Philip Seymour Hoffman is manager Art Howe, Jonah Hill plays Beane’s assistant, who in real life was Paul DePodesta, but since he didn’t cooperate with the movie people, his character was called Peter Brand in the movie.
I’ve been an A’s fan since 1965 so I enjoyed the movie; couple years before I saw the movie I met Michael Lewis, who wrote Moneyball the book. Part of it frustrates me though; if they did something that gave them an advantage over other teams, why brag about it? Just keep doing it.
These days, everyone does it, and the A’s are a cruddy team that still has a cheapskate owner.

— NFL Trend of the Day— last three years, 49ers were 6-9 ATS in games where the spread was 3 or fewer points, whether they were favored or the underdog.

— When it was announced that the great game show host Bob Barker passed away over the weekend, Vanna White posted a picture of herself on Instagram, when she was a contestant on The Price is Right, back in 1980.
This was only a couple years before Vanna White started turning letters on Wheel of Fortune; apparently that appearance on The Price is Right helped her land the TV gig.

— New Orleans Saints haven’t drafted a QB in the first round since they picked Archie Manning in 1971. NFL team with the 2nd-longest such streak is Dallas, which drafted Troy Aikman in 1989, and hasn’t drafted a QB in the first round since.

— Over the last 12 years, Jets have gone 70-129, with zero playoff appearances, which is why they acquired Aaron Rodgers this year.
Here are the different QB’s who’ve started for the Jets since their last playoff game:
Mark Sanchez 14-17 W-L record
Ryan Fitzpatrick 13-14
Sam Darnold 13-25
Geno Smith 12-18
Zach Wilson 8-14
Josh McCown 5-11
Mike White 2-5
Michael Vick 1-2
Bryce Petty 1-6
Joe Flacco 1-8
Greg McElroy 0-1
Trevor Siemian 0-1
Luke Falk 0-2
This is why the Jets now have a Hall of Fame QB.

— Pointspreads on the first four Super Bowls were all 11+ points; the NFL teams were assumed to be dominant over the AFL teams, but Super Bowls 3-4 were both won by AFC underdogs.
First Super Bowl was a single digit spread was Super Bowl 5, when the Colts, who moved to the AFC after the NFL-AFL merger, upset Dallas 16-13.

— Arizona Cardinals cut 36-year old QB Colt McCoy Monday, which means Arizona’s starting QB 12 days from now will either be rookie Clayton Tune or the recently acquired Joshua Dobbs.
Starter Kyler Murray is still on the PUP List; he signed a 5-year, $230M deal last year, but then he tore up his knee late last season. It is unclear when he’ll be back playing for the Redbirds.

— Chicago Bears cut backup QB PJ Walker; he signed a 2-year, $4.15M deal with the Bears in March, with $2M in guarantees, but now he is gone.

— Today is cutdown day in the NFL; teams have to cut their rosters from 90 to 53 players. Tough day for a lot of players and their families.

Wednesday’s 6-pack:

Top 6 teams in the AFCA college football poll:
6) USC
5) LSU
4) Ohio State
3) Alabama
2) Michigan
1) Georgia

Quote of the Day
“I’ll get to the bottom of this, if I have to go all the way to the top!!!”
Colonel Flagg, from M*A*S*H

Sunday’s quiz
Who has hit the most home runs in Kansas City Royals’ history?

Tuesday’s quiz
Matt Schaub has thrown for the most yards (23,221) in Houston Texans’ history.

Monday’s quiz
Larry Bird played his college basketball at Indiana State; originally he went to Indiana, but he transferred out of there, worked for a while, then went to play for the Sycamores.

************************************

Wednesday’s Den: Mid-week musings……..

Giants 6, Reds 1
Alex Cobb had his no-hitter broken up with two outs in 9th inning.
Cobb threw 131 pitches, most of any pitcher in the majors this year.
Reds lost five of their last six games.

Cardinals 6, Padres 5 (10)
Willson Contreras homered twice; second one tied game in 8th inning.
Tommy Edman’s walk-off single ended the game.
San Diego is 8-16 in its last 24 games.

Cubs 1, Brewers 0
Cubs scored in the first inning, game’s only run.
Loss ends Milwaukee’s nine-game winning streak.

Dodgers 9, Arizona 1
Dodgers in August the last four years:
2020- 21-7
2021- 21-6
2022- 22-6
2023- 23-4

Dodgers are first team in 140 years (140 years!!!) to have a winning %age of .750+ in the same month, four years in a row.

Astros 6, Red Sox 2
Bregman/Alvarez each went 3-5 with a home run.
Boston’s Adam Duvall has seven home runs in his last nine games.

Pirates 6, Royals 3

Cole Ragans threw 7 shutout IP, but the Royals’ bullpen imploded.
Liover Peguero hit a 3-run homer in the ninth inning.

— Toronto put SS Bo Bichette (quad) on the IL.
Angels put P Chase Silseth on the 7-day concussion IL.

— Movie of the Day— Other People’s Money (1991)— A corporate raider buys up shares in an undervalued company but falls in love with a lawyer for the other side. Things get interesting after that.

Danny DeVito is the corporate raider, Gregory Peck is the founder of the company.

Danny DeVito is great in this; he gives a speech in the climactic scene “……..I’m not your best friend. I’m your only friend……..” that is excellent.

— College Football Trend of the Day— In his career, Miami FL coach Cristobal is 14-26-2 ATS as a home favorite.

— Arizona Cardinals’ over/under win total this year is 3.5 wins; every other team in the NFL has a win total of at least 6.5 wins.

— New Orleans Saints traded kicker Will Lutz to Denver, in exchange for a 7th round draft pick. Lutz is re-united with Broncos’ coach Sean Payton. For now, Blake Grupe is the Saints’ kicker.

To make room for Lutz, Denver told K Brett Maher to take a hike.

— Philadelphia Eagles cut their punter, don’t have another one on the roster yet, but they don’t play for 11 more days.

— Green Bay Packers have only three players who are 30+ years old; they had eight last year.

— Watching episode 4 of Hard Knocks with the Jets, it dawned on me that the Jets’ GM, Joe Douglas, hasn’t been on the show at all, not that I can remember at least. When they cut down the roster in next week’s show, you’d think the general manager would make an appearance.

— Virginia Cavaliers have a 34-year old kicker this year, a former Marine.

— If you play fantasy football, keep in mind that in Week 14, a possible fantasy football playoff weekend, two teams have a bye, Arizona and Washington. Draft accordingly.

Thursday’s 6-pack:
Passing yardage leaders in college football, last year:
4,744 yards— Austin Reed, WKU
4,641— Michael Penix, Washington
4,537— Caleb Williams, USC
4,321— Drake Maye, North Carolina
4,253— Kyle Vantrease, Georgia Southern
4,127— Stetson Bennett, Georgia

Quote of the Day
“When you assume…….you make an ass of u and me.”
Felix Unger, from The Odd Couple

Thursday’s quiz
In the classic TV show The Odd Couple, what was the policeman’s name who was a friend of Felix/Oscar’s?

Wednesday’s quiz
George Brett (317) has hit the most home runs in Kansas City Royals’ history.

Tuesday’s quiz
Matt Schaub has thrown for the most yards (23,221) in Houston Texans’ history.

Thursday’s Den: Doing some thinking out loud…….

— Atlanta Braves play the Dodgers in LA this weekend; Rams’ QB Matthew Stafford will throw out the first pitch before Sunday’s game. I’m guessing his catcher will be Clayton Kershaw, who was a high school teammate of Stafford— #9 was obviously the quarterback, Kershaw was the center.

— College football takes center stage Thursday night with a handful of games; Utah QB Cameron Rising is doubtful for the Utes’ season opener- he tore his ACL in the Rose Bowl eight months ago, hasn’t gotten the go-ahead to start playing yet.
Utah has a redshirt junior who is expected to start in place of Rising; they’ve got a freshman QB who is expected to be used in running situations.
Thursday will be Florida’s 1st non-conference road game outside the state of Florida since they visited the Carrier Dome in Syracuse in 1991.

— Bengals’ QB Joe Burrow practiced Thursday, for the first time since suffering a strained right calf July 27. Bengals signed QB Will Grier, by the way; he was cut by Dallas Sunday, after he played the whole preseason game for the Cowboys Saturday night. Jake Browning is the #2 QB for Cincinnati.

— Cardinals 5, Padres 4— Tommy Edman got a walk-off hit for the second day in a row; he grew up as a Padres’ fan in San Diego, and still wears #19 because of his admiration for Tony Gwynn.
San Diego is now 9-25 in games where winning run scored from the 7th inning on.

— Reds 4, Giants 1— Christian Encarnacion-Strand went 4-4, knocked in three runs; he was playing in front of his father for the first time. Encarnacion-Strand grew up across the bay from Oracle Park in Pleasant Hill, CA.

— Astros 7, Red Sox 4— Houston won its last five games, scoring 52 runs on 78 hits.

— Rays 3, Marlins 0 (10)— Quite a pitching duel between Eflin/Luzardo; Josh Lowe had the go-ahead base-hit in the top of the 10th.

— Mets 6, Rangers 5 (10)— DJ Stewart hit two home runs, made a great catch in right field and got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, which forced in the winning run in the 10th inning.

— Braves 7, Rockies 3— Marcell Ozuna has seven home runs in his last nine games.
Watching this series the last few nights, they sounded like Atlanta home games, but the games were at Coors Field. Lot of Braves fans in Denver.

— Josh Donaldson got the boot from the Bronx Bombers this week, but he still pockets $8M in salary next year from New York.

— Oakland A’s have used 21 different starting pitchers this year, most in MLB; Kansas City has used 20 different starting pitchers.

— Monday is Labor Day, a national holiday; there are only 11 baseball games on the schedule. Whats with that? Every team should play on Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day.

— NFL Trend of the Day— Last five years, over is 26-14 in Dallas Cowboy home games.

— If the baseball playoffs started today (they don’t):
NL: Braves, Brewers, Dodgers. Wild Cards: Phillies, Cubs, Az/SF
AL: Orioles, Twins, Sea/Hst. Wild Cards: Rays, AL West #2, Rangers

Friday’s 6-pack:
Major league leaders in runs scored:
120— Ronald Acuna
116— Mookie Betts
111— Freddie Freeman
103— Matt Olson
101— Shohei Ohtani
99— Marcus Semien

Quote of the Day
“Yo, we talked about the Jets and the Cowboys for the three-millionth time in a row.”
ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky, apparently not happy with his work on the radio

Friday’s quiz
Dallas Cowboys have won Super Bowls under which three head coaches?

Thursday’s quiz
In the classic TV show The Odd Couple, Murray the cop was a friend of Felix/Oscar’s.

Wednesday’s quiz
George Brett (317) has hit the most home runs in Kansas City Royals’ history.

*********************************************************

Friday’s Den: Random stuff with the long weekend here…….

— Braves 8, Dodgers 7
Ronald Acuna is the first player EVER with 30+ homers, 60+ stolen bases in same season.
Atlanta scored six runs in 2nd inning, then hung on down the stretch.

— Was making a sandwich in my kitchen the other night, was slicing it on a cutting board when I remembered that I actually made that cutting board in a high school shop class, in 1976.
I am the least handy person you know, a total klutz with tools, but I survived three years of shop class in high school without losing any fingers or limbs. My shop teacher was the best teacher I had in high school, not even close.
Guy’s name is Joe Botta; he had tremendous patience, teaching a nerdy kid like me how to do things. We would talk about sports while we worked; one year he and the other shop teacher, Mr Cavotta, hit the football parlay sheets 2-3 weeks in a row— a kid in our class distributed the sheets— his father was a bookie.
Joe Botta was a big Joe Namath fan; Broadway Joe was still playing back then.
Years later, maybe 1999 or so, I’m at a high school football game, and the QB for one of the teams is wearing white shoes, only kid on the field wearing white shoes, just like Joe Namath did. I look at the program, and the kid’s last name is Botta; turns out it was Mr Botta’s son.
Anyway, with school starting around here next week, wanted to give a shout out to the best teacher I ever had in high school. Thank you, Joe Botta.

— When the NFL season starts, don’t overreact to what happens in weeks 1-2; a 17-game season has its share of twists/turns.
Not sure why, but was thinking about an old Steelers team this week, turns out it was 1989. In Week 1, they lost 51-0 at home to Cleveland; in Week 2, they lost 41-10 at Cincinnati. No bueno.
People were calling for coach Chuck Noll to quit, that his days were done, but the Steelers rallied to go 9-7, made the playoffs, even won a playoff game, before losing 24-23 at Denver to finish their season. Don’t overreact to the first week or two of the year.
In case you were wondering, Bubby Brister (16), Todd Blackledge (2) started games at QB for the Steelers that season.

— Utah 24, Florida 11
Utah’s star QB Rising (knee) sat this game out.
Utes’ backup QB threw a 70-yard TD pass on Utah’s first offensive play.
Utes’ #3 QB had a 27-yard TD run late in second quarter.

— Minnesota 13, Nebraska 10
Gophers kicked a 47-yard FG at the gun for the comeback win.
Minnesota tied game 10-10 on a 13-yard TD pass with 2:32 left to play.
Gophers were +3 in turnovers (4-1); they were outgained, 295-251.

— NC State 24, UConn 14
Wolfpack outgained UConn, 364-273
Virginia transfer QB Armstrong ran for 95 yards and 2 TD’s, threw for 155 more.

— JT Daniels is the quarterback at Rice this year; what a journey he is having:
2018-19— USC— He left high school early to play for the Trojans.
2020-21— Georgia— He wound up backing up Stetson Bennett, won a national title.
2022— West Virginia— He got benched midway thru the season.
2023— Rice
Six years, four schools; he can write a hell of a book.
Daniels’ Owls visit the Texas Longhorns this week; it is the third time he’s played in Austin, with three different teams.

— NFL Trend of the Day— last three years, Atlanta Falcons were 2-8-1 ATS as home favorites.

— New England claimed QB Matt Corral on waivers from Carolina; Corral was a good QB at Ole Miss, he played in his team’s bowl game his last year there and screwed up his ankle, which hurt his draft status, but now he’ll be backing up Mac Jones in Foxboro.

— Angels put six players on waivers this week, basically giving them away; Thursday they lost five of the players- no one put a bid in on OF Randall Grichuk.
Cleveland took three of the guys: P Lucas Giolito, relievers Reynaldo Lopez, Matt Moore.
Cincinnati took OF’s Hunter Renfroe from the Angels and Harrison Bader from New York.
Seattle picked up reliever Dominic Leone from Anaheim.
The moves save the Angels $5.7M in salary.

— Milwaukee Brewers signed 3B Josh Donaldson to a minor league deal.

— Detroit 4, New York 3
Anthony Volpe’s 3-run homer in 9th inning tied game 3-3
Gleyber Torres’ throwing error allowed winning run to score for Detroit.

— Marlins 6, Nationals 1
First four guys in Miami’s lineup went 8-19, with 5 runs scored, 4 RBI
— Since All Star break, Cubs are 9-1 in games where winning run scored from 7th inning on.

— Pro Football Hall of Famer Gil Brandt passed away this week, at age 91.
Working with head coach Tom Landry and GM Tex Schramm, Brandt helped turn the Dallas Cowboys from an expansion team in 1960 into a perennial league power.
Brandt helped revolutionize the NFL’s scouting industry by using computers and algorithms into the player evaluation process, long before that was a thing to do.
Brandt left no stone unturned when looking for players; he was one of the first NFL talent evaluators to take historically black colleges and universities seriously as sources of talent— Dallas wound up with Bob Hayes, Everson Walls and Too Tall Jones from HBCU’s.
Even in his 80’s, Brandt was active on Twitter, sharing ideas.
RIP, sir.

98— Mookie Betts, Kyle Tucker
97— Adolis Garcia
96— Pete Alonso
95— Shohei Ohtani

Quote of the Day
“It’s been a while since I was playing really meaningful games in September, and I feel it in this clubhouse. Guys know what’s at stake. Guys know the long grind of the season. It would be disappointing if we didn’t finish off strong because we had a really good year and played really good baseball.”
Miami Marlins’ IF Garrett Hampson

Saturday’s quiz
Major League Baseball switched to divisional play in 1969; who won the National League West that season?

Friday’s quiz
Dallas Cowboys have won Super Bowls under three head coaches: Tom Landry, Jimmy Johnson, Barry Switzer

Thursday’s quiz

*******************************************************

Saturday’s Den: Random stuff on a summer night

— Ronald Acuna is having a very good week.
Thursday night, Acuna became the first player ever to hit 30+ home runs and steal 60+ bases in the same season. Braves beat the Dodgers 8-7, with Acuna hitting a grand slam.
Earlier Thursday, Acuna got married; his fiancee’s visa was about to expire— she would’ve had to leave the country and miss the rest of the season, so instead of getting married this fall, they got married Thursday, so now she can live in Atlanta, with the couple’s two kids.
Friday night, Atlanta beat the Dodgers again, 6-3, and Acuna hit another home run.
Ballplayers are superstitious; Braves’ 1B Matt Olson jokingly suggested that he and his wife might be getting their vows renewed, if getting married helps your hitting.

— College sports are getting very weird; the ATLANTIC Coast Conference, and I am emphasizing ATLANTIC, added three teams Friday: Stanford, California and SMU.
Stanford and Cal are located in California, very close to the PACIFIC Ocean.
Southern Methodist is located in Dallas, which isn’t near the Atlantic or the Pacific.
Supposedly, lot of the non-revenue sports will be playing games in Dallas, cutting down the travel from each coast, which is why/how SMU got involved.
This is all greed-driven nonsense:
Clemson, Cal and Stanford are in the same league.
USC, UCLA and Rutgers are in the same league.
Oy.

— Washington Commander fans must be happy that Daniel Snyder sold the ballclub; the Week 1 home opener against Arizona is a sellout, which is significant.
As recently as 2021, the team’s home games were filled to only 62.6% of their stadium’s capacity. It was, by far, the lowest figure in the NFL.

— As recently as Week 18 of last season, Davis Webb was an NFL quarterback; he started the Giants’ last regular season game LY, his one and only NFL start. Then he retired.
Webb must be highly thought of in NFL circles; Sean Payton hired the 28-year old Webb as his new QB coach in Denver, where his job is to get Russell Wilson back on track.
Pretty significant job for a first-time coach; this will be interesting to follow.

— Movie of the Day: The Breakfast Club (1985)— Five high school students meet during their Saturday detention and discover they have a lot more in common than they thought.
Molly Ringwald, Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, Anthony Michael Hall, Ally Sheedy are the five kids. Paul lGleason plays the teacher supervising the group.
The scene in which all characters sit in a circle on the floor in the library and tell stories about why they were in detention wasn’t scripted; it was all ad-libbed.
Good movie.

— NFL Trend of the Day: Under Robert Saleh, Jets are 11-17 ATS as an underdog, 3-3 as the favorite. Now that Aaron Rodgers is a Jet, they figure to be favored more often.

— Louisville 39, Georgia Tech 34
Tech led 28-13 at halftime.
Louisville was only 1-11 on third down.
Cardinals ran ball for 227 yards, threw for 247 more; good balance.

— Michigan State 31, Central Michigan 7
MSU outscored the Chippewas 21-0 in second half.
Total yardage was 406-219, Spartans.
Central Michigan was 3-16 on third down.

— Miami FL 38, Miami OH 3
Hurricanes threw a 44-yard TD pass on their first pass of the game.
Hurricanes outgained the Red Hawks, 493-215.

— Cubs 6-2, Reds 2-3
Noelvi Marte’s walk-off single gave the Reds a split of this twinbill.
In the first inning of the nightcap, Lyon Richardson threw 37 pitches, faced six batters— three walks, three strikeouts.
37 pitches with no balls in play isn’t going to make Commissioner Manfred happy.
— Phillies’ P Michael Lorenzen threw a no-hitter in his second start for Philly August 9th; in three starts since then, he’s allowed 15 runs in 15 IP. Go figure.

— Marlins 8, Nationals 5 (11)
Miami moves within two games of the last NL Wild Card slot.

— Mets 2, Mariners 1
Daniel Vogelbach had the game-winning single in the 8th inning.

— Blue Jays 13, Rockies 9
This game was 2-2 after five innings; rough night for the bullpens.
