Sunday’s 6-pack:
Major league leaders in stolen bases:
63— Ronald Acuna, Atl
54— Esteury Ruiz, A’s
41— Corbin Carroll, Ariz
38— CJ Abrams, Wash/Bobby Witt, KC
36— Julio Rodriguez, Sea/Nico Hoerner, Cubs
30— Wander Franco, TB

Quote of the Day
“We had very few penalties. I thought we played a clean game. The offensive line did a good job. That’s a tough, physical team we played.”
Fresno State coach Jeff Tedford, who was Aaron Rodgers’ coach at Cal

Sunday’s quiz
In the classic TV show Magnum PI, what state did Thomas Magnum live in when he was a kid?

Saturday’s quiz
Major League Baseball switched to divisional play in 1969; Atlanta Braves won the National League West that season—they were in the Western Division until 1994.

Friday’s quiz
Dallas Cowboys have won Super Bowls under three head coaches: Tom Landry, Jimmy Johnson, Barry Switzer

*********************************************

Sunday’s Den: Wrapping up a busy Saturday…….

Lot of stuff going on this weekend; there is even a FIBA basketball tournament going on in the Philippines, but unfortunately, those games are all being played while I’m sleeping.

— Colorado 45, TCU 42
Buffaloes were a 21-point underdog.
Colorado QB Sanders threw for 510 yards, four TD’s.
Four different Colorado receivers had 100+ receiving yards.
Buffaloes were 9-15 on third down, TCU 10-17.

— Texas State 42, Baylor 31
Bobcats were a 27-point underdog.
QB Finley threw for 298 yards with 3 TD’s; he ran for another score.
Finley previously played one season at LSU and two at Auburn.

— Colorado has 87 new players this season; Texas State has 71— they’re the two teams in the country with the most new players this season. Both posted huge upsets Saturday.

— Penn State 38, West Virginia 15– 0:13 left in the game, Penn State (-21) led 31-15- they had the ball on the West Virginia 5-yard line. Take a knee and go home, right?
Not so much; Penn State runs a QB draw, scores a TD, covering the spread and putting the game over the total. Postgame handshake between the coaches must’ve been interesting.

— Wyoming 35, Texas Tech 33 OT
Tech led this game 17-0 after the first quarter.
Red Raiders outgained Wyoming, 431-320.

— Fresno State 39, Purdue 35
Fresno QB Keane threw for 366 yards, four TD’s.
Fresno WR Brooks caught 9 passes for 170 yards, two TD’s.
Bulldogs were 11-17 on third down, Purdue 3-11.

— Illinois 30, Toledo 28
Illini kicked a 26-yard FG with 0:05 left to avoid an Opening Day upset.
Toledo led this game 12-7 at halftime.
Rockets were 7-15 on third down, Illinois 3-9.

— UCLA 27, Coastal Carolina 13— Bruins were struggling in this game; they brought freshman QB Moore in off the bench, and he provided a spark. Probably the last time he comes off the bench for UCLA.

— Temple 24, Akron 21
Akron led 21-7 with a minute left in the first half.
EJ Warner (son of Kurt Warner) threw two 2nd half TD passes.
Zips had 10 penalties for 82 yards, Temple 3 for 15.

Upsets of the Day:
Texas State (+27) 42, Baylor 31
Colorado (+21) 45, TCU 42
Wyoming (+13) 35, Texas Tech 33, OT
Northern Illinois (+9) 27, Boston College 24 OT
Fresno State (+4) 39, Purdue 35

— Reds 2, Cubs 1
Cubs led 1-0 in 9th inning, but their bullpen blew the game.
Reds are in a 3-way tie for the last Wild Card spot in the NL.

— Guardians 7, Rays 6 (11)
Tampa Bay falls 2.5 games behind Baltimore in the AL East.
Cleveland is still five games behind Minnesota in the AL Central.

— Twins 9, Rangers 7 (10)— Texas is 3-12 in its last 15 games; they’re two games out of first place in the AL West, have a 1.5-game lead for the last Wild Card slot in the AL.

— Mariners 8, Mets 7— Seattle blew a 7-3 lead with their ace Luis Castillo on the mound, but JP Crawford homered in the 9th inning for the win.

— Baltimore 7, Arizona 3
This was 46th Arizona game this year started by a rookie pitcher.

— A’s 2, Angels 1
Oakland is 7-5 in its last 12 games.
A’s are 9-7 when Blackburn is their starting pitcher.
Angels are 7-21 in their last 28 games.
Angels put six players on waivers this week, trying to get under the luxury tax threshold, but because no one claimed Randal Grichuk, the Angels are still above the threshold for this year.
The tax the Angels would pay for 2023 would be 20% of how much they went over the threshold. More significant, however, is that it would set them up to pay 30%, instead of 20%, if they go over again in 2024.

— If the baseball playoffs started today (they don’t):
NL: Braves, Brewers, Dodgers. Wild Cards- Phillies, Cubs, SF/Az/Cin
AL: Orioles, Twins, Mariners. Wild Cards- Rays, Astros, Rangers

— There were 15 baseball games Saturday; of the 30 starting pitchers, only seven of them finished the sixth inning.

Monday’s 6-pack:
best records in one-run games:
28-12- Marlins
27-13- Brewers
24-12- Orioles
20-15- Braves
23-18- Phillies
30-25- Reds

Quote of the Day
“It’s your job to keep the score down, not mine.”
Bobby Bowden, the old coach at Florida State, when an opposing coach complained that Bowden’s Seminoles ran the score up on his team.

Monday’s quiz
What city hosts the Sugar Bowl every year?

Sunday’s quiz
In the classic TV show Magnum PI, Thomas Magnum grew up in Virginia.

Saturday’s quiz
Major League Baseball switched to divisional play in 1969; Atlanta Braves won the National League West that season—they were in the Western Division until 1994.

*************************************************

Monday’s Den: Happy Labor Day, everyone……..

— I’m watching the HBO show on the 1980’s Laker teams— it is Winning Time, and this is the second season. Magic Johnson/Kareem- they had great teams, but they also had three head coaches in Magic Johnson’s first three seasons, before they struck gold by promoting Pat Riley to head coach.
Paul Westhead was the second of the three Laker coaches; he was the head coach when LA won the 1980 NBA title, but he was fired less than two years later. The last couple episodes dealt with all that. No one in the Laker front office seemed to know what to do at the time, but he and Magic Johnson couldn’t co-exist, and in the NBA, star players always win that battle.
Westhead is 84 now; he lives in Philadelphia. I’m wondering what he thinks of how he was shown in this series.
Four years after the Lakers fired him, Westhead was hired by Loyola Marymount, and he turned that program into a great national story in 1989-90, getting to the finals of the West Region in 1990, even after one of his best players collapsed/died on the court during a conference tournament game. That was an amazing team.
If Winning Time lasts long enough to get to 1990, I wonder if Westhead will get a mention for the great work he did at LMU.

— Why do big-time college football teams play I-AA opponents? It is stealing money from their fans, charging them to watch glorified scrimmages against inferior opponents:
Georgia 48, UT-Martin 7
Ole Miss 73, Mercer 7
Arkansas 56, Western Carolina 13
Maryland 38, Towson State 6
Oklahoma State 27, Central Arkansas 13
Cincinnati 66, Eastern Kentucky 13
Notre Dame 56, Tennessee State 3
Syracuse 65, Colgate 0
Pittsburgh 45, Wofford 7
How does this help? It helps the I-AA teams; they get big paychecks for getting their butts kicked, but not sure how much it helps the home side.

— Florida State 45, LSU 24
LSU led 17-14 at halftime.
Florida State scored the next 31 points.
Seminoles were 9-14 on third down, LSU 3-10.
More early returns from college football:

— Pac-12 teams are 8-2 against the spread. This is the first time every team in the Pac-12 won its season opener since 1932.

— Big X teams are 2-6 ATS, 2-5 as favorites; Houston’s first game as a Big X member was a 17-14 win over Texas-San Antonio— not impressive.

— Big 14 teams are 2-5 ATS as a home favorites.

— Terry Bradshaw turned 75 years old this week; if a guy could win four Super Bowls and still be underrated, this was Bradshaw. He parlayed his act as a dumb guy into a long, lucrative career on TV. No one plays as well as Bradshaw did if he was dumb.
Random trivia; Bradshaw played QB in college at Louisiana Tech; the QB at Louisiana Tech just before Bradshaw was Phil Robertson, the father on Duck Dynasty.

— Westgate SuperBook listed some prop bets for this year’s NFL:
Will the NFL record for passing yards by a QB be broken? No -550, Yes +400
Will the NFL record for passing TD’s by a QB be broken? No -1400, Yes +800
Will the NFL record for rushing yards be broken? No -1220, Yes +700
Will the NFL record for receiving yards be broken? No -650, Yes +450

— If the baseball playoffs started today (they don’t):
NL: Braves, Brewers, Dodgers. Wild Cards- Phillies, Cubs, SF/Az/Cin/Miami all tied
AL: Orioles, Twins, Mariners. Wild Cards- Rays, Astros, Rangers

— Under is 13-5 in games when Laz Diaz umpires behind the plate.

— Mookie Betts hit .455 in August, with 51 hits, 11 of them home runs. He’s the 3rd player since 1900 to have a .450 average with 50 hits and 10 HR in a month- Babe Ruth (July 1923-24) and Lou Gehrig (June 1930) are the others.

— Seattle Mariners 77-59 this year, but only 21-24 in one-run games. The last two years, Seattle was 34-22/33-19 in one-run games.

— Cubs 15, Reds 7
Game was 5-5 after seven innings; Cincinnati has serious pitching issues. They also have COVID related issues; four players are on that list right now.

— A’s 10, Angels 6
Oakland didn’t have any hits in the first five innings.
In innings 6-7, A’s scored 10 runs on 10 hits.

— Rangers 6, Twins 5
Mitch Garver homered twice for Texas.
Adolis Garcia hit a walk-off homer for the Rangers.

— There were 30 baseball games Saturday/Sunday; of the 60 starting pitchers, only 14 of them finished the sixth inning.

— Montenegro has a team in the FIBA basketball tournament; they were playing the American team last week and I felt like an idiot— if you had given me $100 to find Montenegro on a map, I would’ve had no idea where to look first. I was much smarter 45 years ago than I am now.
Turns out Montenegro is kind of in between Serbia and Albania, on the Adriatic Sea.

Tuesday’s 6-pack:

Duke 28, Clemson 7— Tigers were a 12-point road favorite.
Cubs 5, Giants 0— Justin Steele tossed 8 shutout IP.
Astros 13, Rangers 6— Jose Altuve hit two home runs.
Arizona 4, Rockies 2— Merrill Kelly struck out 12 in 7 IP.
Phillies 9, Padres 7— Rich Hill is 0-4, 11.34 in five starts for San Diego.
Royals 12, White Sox 1— Cole Ragans tossed six shutout IP.

Quote of the Day
“We have a conference next year, yes we do…..…
we have a conference next year, how about you?”
San Jose State fan, taunting the Oregon State bench during Sunday’s game

Tuesday’s quiz
San Diego Padres have played in two World Series; who were their managers?

Sunday’s quiz

Tuesday’s Den: Thoughts, questions about the upcoming NFL season

— Its been 20 years since a team won consecutive Super Bowls; can the Chiefs go back/back this season? They’ve been in three of last four Super Bowls, winning twice.

— Eric Bieniemy was the offensive coordinator for those teams, but now he’s moved on to the same job with the Washington Commanders- they are rumors that Bieniemy/Patrick Mahomes didn’t get along too well, and we know who wins those battles.

So now Bieniemy is the OC for a team with a 2nd-year QB who started one game last year- Sam Howell. Howell made his first career start in the last game of his rookie year, just like Patrick Mahomes did.

— Since 1995, only one time has the Super Bowl loser gotten back to the Super Bowl the next season; can the Philadelphia Eagles break that cold spell?

By the way, the last 20 years, the Super Bowl loser is 4-16 ATS in Week 1 the next year.

— Three teams (Colts, Panthers, Texans) are expected to start rookie QB’s this week; two of those three teams also have rookie head coaches, the third head coach (Frank Reich) is in his first year with that team.

— Last seven years, Indianapolis Colts have started a different QB every year in Week 1:
2017— Scott Tolzien
2018— Andrew Luck
2019— Jacoby Brissett
2020— Philip Rivers (he started against them in Week 1, 2019)
2021— Carson Wentz
2022— Matt Ryan
2023— Anthony Richardson

Colts haven’t won in Week 1 since 2013; they tied Houston LY, as 7-point favorites.

— Detroit Lions are favored to win the NFL North; they’ve been in the playoffs three times in this century, with last time in 2016. Lions haven’t won a playoff game since 1991. Last time Detroit won this division was 1993; would you bet on them this year?

— Sean Payton is the new coach in Denver, where his #1 project is to revive Russell Wilson’s career. Broncos’ QB coach is Davis Webb, who seven months ago was the #3 QB for the Giants- they started him the last regular season game last year, then he retired.

So the most valuable player on your team is being coached by a 28-year old first time coach, who started one NFL game. This should be interesting.

— Dallas Cowboys told OC Kellen Moore to take a hike, after going 13-6 LY; HC Mike McCarthy will call plays now. About 10 minutes after Dallas fired Moore, the Chargers hired him as their new OC (actually it was the next day),

Chargers’ OC last year was Joe Lombardi, who now works for Denver; Charger-Bronco games figure to be interesting this year.

— Word of the Day— Mentor— an experienced and trusted adviser.

— NFL Trend of the Day— Over last 10 years, Cincinnati Bengals are 45-30-6 ATS as an underdog.

— Jordan Love is the new QB in Green Bay; since 1992, the Packers’ starting QB has been either Brett Favre or Aaron Rodgers. No pressure there, following those two Hall of Famers.

Think about the contrast:
Packers have had two #1 QB’s the last 31 years.
Colts have had seven #1 QB’s the last seven years.

— You may have heard; Aaron Rodgers has moved on to the Jets, who haven’t made the playoffs since 2010. Jets already have a good defense; this should be interesting.

— Los Angeles Rams are taking their salary cap medicine this year; their defense may be the youngest one in the NFL this century. They still have Aaron Donald on the line, but this is a very young defense.

Did they fix the offensive line? If so, they can run the ball enough to take the pressure off that defense, or Matthew Stafford can try to outscore teams.

— New England went 8-9 LY, playing a 2nd-year QB; Patriots’ offensive coaches were terrible. Matt Patricia, Joe Judge; are you kidding me? This year, New England brought Bill O’Brien back to be Jones’ QB guru; Patriots haven’t won a playoff game (0-1) since tom Brady left town.

Hmmm……..

— Lamar Jackson got a boatload of $$$ from the Ravens, and they changed OC’s, to find a more explosive offensive for Jackson to run; now he has to be available in December.

In 2021, Jackson didn’t play after Week 13.
Last year, Jackson didn’t play after Week 12.

One of the most important abilities is availability; Ravens are 1-3 in his playoff starts, scoring 13 ppg. Now is the time for Jackson to produce and earn all that $$$.

— Arizona Cardinals have an over/under win total of 3.5 this year; no other team has a win total under 6.5 wins- they’ve already traded a couple players away, for draft picks. Kyler Murray won’t be ready to start the season; Joshua Dobbs (0-2 as an NFL starter) gets the nod this week for the Redbirds, against Washington.

— NFL Sunday Ticket switches from DirecTV to YouTube TV; I made the switch myself back in January, so I’m looking forward to seeing how they do it. Apparently, four games on one screen will be their thing. Baseball package on YouTube has been fine, so I’m optimistic.

Quote of the Day

Wednesday’s Den: Mid-week musings……..

— Labor Day afternoon around 5:00, my phone rings; I normally don’t answer calls from strange numbers, but it was an Albany number so I answered. Guy wanted to buy my house, which was kind of surprising, seeing how its not for sale.

How he got my phone number, I have no freakin’ idea, but its a national holiday, go out and do something fun. I politely declined and that was that; I do need somewhere to live 🙂

Probably should’ve asked him how much he was offering……..

— Patrick Mahomes has played five Week 1 games in his career; Chiefs have averaged 36.4 points/game in those five contests.

Duke 28, Clemson 7
Clemson lost two fumbles in the red zone, had two FG’s blocked.
Duke QB Leonard had a 44-yard TD run.
First time Blue Devils beat Clemson since 2004.

— Oregon State has covered its last eight football games, longest active streak in the country. Beavers’ QB this year is DJ Uiagalelei, who started for Clemson the last two years.

— Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce hyperextended knee during practice Tuesday, is a ??? for the Chiefs’ opener with Detroit Thursday night.

— Baylor’s QB Blake Shapen is out 2-3 weeks with a knee injury.

— When I was a kid, loved to eat Cracker Jack; very good snack food. Had no idea until couple of days ago that there was a dog on the box, sitting at the sailor’s feet on the label. Turns out the dog’s name is Bingo, if you care about stuff like that.

— Word of the Day— Obsequious— obedient to an excessive degree.

— NFL Trend of the Day—Last three years, Miami Dolphins are 17-8 ATS at home.

— When the Rays lost at home to Boston Monday, it ended the Red Sox’ 13-game losing streak at Tampa Bay.

— Lucas Giolito got traded from the White Sox to the Angels on July 26. He is 1-6, 9.34 since the White Sox traded him- the Angels have since traded him to Cleveland, in a waiver deal.

Strange how a guy who is a pretty good pitcher just lost it in August.

Astros 14, Rangers 1— Jose Altuve hit home runs in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd innings; he’s hit five home runs the last two nights.

Rays 8, Red Sox 6 (11)— Brandon Lowe hit a walk-off homer in the 11th inning.

New York 5, Detroit 1— Giancarlo Stanton hit his 400th career home run.

— Dodgers’ P Julio Urías was arrested on felony domestic violence charges; he isn’t with the team on their road trip in Miami. Urias was suspended for 20 games in 2019, after the pitcher shoved his girlfriend to the ground in the parking lot of a Los Angeles shopping mall.

With this being his second offense, the penalty figures to be longer.

Cubs 11, Giants 8— Wind was blowing out at Wrigley; Cubs scored six runs in 7th inning, with Christian Morel hitting a 3-run homer.

Padres 8, Phillies 0— Pedro Avila allowed two hits in 6.2 shutout IP (he walked six guys).

Orioles 5, Angels 4 (10)
Orioles scored twice in 9th, took 4-3 lead.
Angels tied game in bottom of the 9th.
Baltimore is 30-14 this year in games where winning run scored from 7th inning on.

— If the playoffs started today (they do not):
NL: Braves, Brewers, Dodgers. Wild Cards: Phillies, Cubs, Reds
AL: Orioles, Twins, Astros. Wild Cards: Rays, Mariners, Blue Jays

Thursday’s 6-pack:

Interesting point spreads in college football this week:
— Wisconsin (-3) @ Washington State
— Iowa (-3) @ Iowa State
— Ole Miss (-4) @ Tulane
— Arizona @ Mississippi State (-9)
— Central Florida (-2) @ Boise State
— Auburn (-7) @ California

Happy birthday to my neighbor Christina; hope you have an excellent day.

“Celebrate the uniqueness of each player.”
Pete Carroll

Thursday’s quiz
Who was the Detroit Lions’ QB the last time they won a playoff game?
Hint: He played college football at NC State

Wednesday’s quiz
Hall of Fame QB Brett Favre played most of his career in Green Bay; he started his NFL career with the Atlanta Falcons.

Tuesday’s quiz
San Diego Padres have played in two World Series; Hall of Famer Dick Williams and future Hall of Famer Bruce Bochy were the managers.

*******************************************************

Thursday’s Den: Doing some thinking out loud…….

Cardinals 11, Braves 6
St Louis was +265, the biggest underdog they’ve been since 2005.

Atlanta was -350, the biggest favorite to lose this season.

— This week, Jose Altuve became the 4th player ever to hit three home runs in the first three innings of a game:

1930— Carl Reynolds
2002— Mike Cameron
2016— Manny Machado
2023— Jose Altuve

— Astros are in first place in AL West for the first time this season; they’ve scored 78 runs in their last eight road games.

— Texas A&M pounded New Mexico 52-10 last week, but it wasn’t a total loss for the Lobos; they banked a check for $1.6M that will pay a lot of bills for their athletic department.

— Good luck in your next chapter, Chris Mortensen; the NFL insider who spent more than 30 years at ESPN, announced his retirement this week.

Mortensen joined ESPN in 1991 after writing for The National, Sport magazine, The Sporting News and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. In 2016, Mortensen took a leave of absence while battling throat cancer. Following successful treatment, he returned to ESPN.

We wish him well; hope he does something fun.

— A baby grand piano that once belonged to Freddie Mercury sold for over $2.2M at a Sotheby’s auction Wednesday; Mercury bought the piano in 1975 and brought it to England from Japan- he wrote Bohemian Rhapsody that same year.

— Word of the Day— Serendipity— finding something valuable or interesting when you are not looking for it.

It was also the name of a pretty good movie, with John Cusack, Kate Beckinsale and Eugene Levy.

— College Football Trend of the Day— As a college coach, Nebraska coach Matt Rhule is 32-13 ATS as an underdog.

— Angels are paying three of their players a boatload of $$$:
Anthony Rendon—$38,571,429— games played, last 4 years: 52-58-47-43

Mike Trout— $37,116,667— games played, last 4 years: 53-36-119-82

Shohei Ohtani— $30,000,000— he certainly earns his $$, but even he’s hurt now.

— Minnesota Twins have lost their last 18 playoff games; last time they won a playoff game was way back in 2004.

— Las Vegas Raiders re-did Jimmy Garoppolo’s contract; now they’re pretty much obligated to keep him on the roster this year and next. If they cut him next year, he’d be $28M of dead $$$$ on their salary cap.

Nationals 3, Mets 2
Mets led 2-0 in 7th inning, but Washington scored twice in 7th.
Rookie Jacob Young had the walk-off hit in the ninth inning.

Cubs 8, Giants 2— Rookie Jordan Wicks has won his first three MLB starts.

Marlins 11, Dodgers 4— Miami scored nine runs in the fifth inning. LA has lost five games in a row, but they’ve got a huge lead in the NL West.

— If the playoffs started today (they do not):
NL: Braves, Brewers, Dodgers. Wild Cards: Phillies, Cubs, Marlins
AL: Orioles, Twins, Astros. Wild Cards: Rays, Mariners, Blue Jays
