Just some general thoughts for the World Cup

  • Counter Attacking with pace > Attacking
  • England and Italy are better in name than they are on the pitch. Major contributors on the team are on the decline of their careers and they don't pose a threat of winning
  • Your jaw drops when you see the names on Argentina team and then you look at their qualifying campaign and your draw drops again. Recently, their manager has decided he want to be a countering team, which isn't in their players or their country's DNA
  • The teams that I think are dangerous have the ability to beat you multiple ways (Brazil and Netherlands)
  • Spain's so talented, that it may not matter that they only can beat you one way
  • Tough break for the African countries that the world's best striker and midfielder are out. If anyone can play with a broken elbow, Drogba can
  • The Stars and Stripes can beat anyone in the world and can lose to anyone as well. I like them to get a result against England, but Slovenia will be their toughest test

Futures
+510 FIFA World Cup 2010 - Brazil 2 units
+435 FIFA World Cup 2010 - Spain 1 unit
+1600 FIFA World Cup 2010 - Netherlands 1/2 unit
+1425 FIFA World Cup 2010 - Germany 1/4 unit

The best team in italy's group
+730 FIFA World Cup 2010 Group F - Winner - Slovakia 1/4 unit
This bet was made before the injury to a Chilean striker. These odds are bad now
+133 FIFA World Cup 2010 Group H - Double Exact - Spain 1st & Chile 2nd 1 unit

Brazil's penalty taker
+1225 FIFA World Cup 2010 - Top Goalscorer - Luis Fabiano 1 unit
Paraguay will head into the last game with N.Zealand and will need to score goals for differential reasons. Santa Cruz is no longer the main scoring threat, though, so this bet sucks too
+13200 FIFA World Cup 2010 - Top Goalscorer - Roque Santa Cruz 1/4 unit

Opening games for the host country since the rules changed to 3 points for a win from 2 points and the tournament changed from 24 to 32 teams

2006 Germany 4:2 Costa Rica
2002 South Korea 2:0 Poland
2002 Japan 2:2 Belgium
1998 France 3:0 South Africa

I expect Mexico to possess and find enough space in a less than organized South Africa defense and I expect Sout Africa to be positive as they tried to be in the Confederations Cup last year. I think this will be a highly entertaining game that will spill goals and maybe an "unfortunate" penalty against the El Tri

Mexico (World Cup)/South Africa (World Cup) Over 2? +147 risking 1/2 unit

Looking at the squad, France has a group of players as strong as anyone that's not Spain and Brazil, but they're embarassed to be here due to the bad qualifying campaign, a hand ball in the play-in and a underage brothel scandal.

Two things that stood out to me is Henry's reaction to the hand ball - requesting that they play the game over. And Ribery's quick exit due to a red card in the Champions League semi when the brothel story broke. They're both reactions that are odd comparing it to American sports. I think their heart's not in it and their last few Friendly results show that.

France 0 ? 2 Spain
France 2 ? 1 Costa Rica
Tunisia 1 ? 1 France
France 0 ? 1 China PR

While Friendlies don't mean everything, Spain could have won 5-0 in France and they pointed to the China match as a game to get confidence and just didn't fire.

Uruguay (World Cup) +? -131* vs France (World Cup) to win 1 unit

Paraguay's main striker option now. If they need to and can batter New Zealand in the third game, the goals should come from Barrios
+10500 FIFA World Cup 2010 - Top Goalscorer - Lucas Barrios 1/4 unit

The English media always tries to be respectful and talks about the Yanks' fitness and spirit, but it always comes off to me as patronizing. The US team is clunky and there's more periods of ugliness than beauty, but they have athletic skill perfect for the counter-attack and they have the resiliency to withstand pressure and some of the best goalies in the world.

England man for man is much better than the US and they should win comfortably, but the gap isn't as large as the line. Capello, England's manager, isn't comfortable right. Since he got to England, he said that his decisions would be based on form and fitness and not reputation. . . and he's waiting for the most completely average midfielder, Gareth Barry who is at best at 60% and tried to get a 35 year old Paul Scholes out of international retirement because he knows his midfield is out of balance and knows his back four needs cover.

US should play up. The only team to be Spain in the last 4 years. . . and it was a Spain going for a record number of non-losses in a row and was their full squad and this is how the US has fared against the top teams in their group since 1990

2006 a man down vs. Italy 1:1
2002 vs. Portugal 3:2
1998 vs. Germany 0:2
1994 vs. Columbia 2:1
1990 vs. Italy 0:1

So, England's better, but these types of upsets are just in the American's DNA. ;)

USA (World Cup) +? +170* vs England (World Cup) risking 1 unit
England 0 / USA 2 +4100*[/b] risking 1/5 unit

I was thinking I was going to be playing a low scoring game because Greece is familiar with each other from having alot of guys on the same clubs side, but they're games in qualifying were surprisingly fairly high scoring, so while WC games are usually lower scoring, the Greek team has a reputation of being all defense, but they didn't have one game below 2 goals. Both teams need points and a draw in this game hurts both.

Greece (World Cup)/South Korea (World Cup) Over 2 +123* risking 1 unit

I like your reasoning in the Greece game.

However, I REALLY like the pictures that accompany the picks.

Just sort of spruces the soccer picks up. For me, anyway.

Good Luck this tourney.

Bob,

Looking for a lil help here....

Serbia Pk & -1/2 (-120)

What does this mean? I was thinking it just means Serbia -1/2 (-120), but doesn't add up in my simple mind because Serbia is offered on the moneyline +105, which would also result in a loss on a push......
