It just feels like it's Netherlands turn to take over the spotlight as the team to beat for a day or two. Denmark had a good plan and stifled the Dutch, but the fact is it was a wake up call . . . .and they still won 2-0

Denmark impressed in their opener and Cameroon appears to be about to come unwound. You always worry about the African teams quitting on their coach as they change coaches quickly when there's player unrest so I thought this excerpt from Soccernet was interesting:

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/preview?id=264058&league=FIFA.WORLD&cc=5901&ver=us

"I chose the position for him and I take responsibility for that," Le Guen said. "You make the choice with what you have."

Several Cameroon players have asked the coach to insert veterans Rigobert Song, Geremi and midfielder Alexandre Song into the lineup. Le Guen has not revealed whether he will make changes.

Denmark's organization is key to their success and against a desperate Cameroon, it seems like it will be even more successful.

Australia is not good, the World Cup came a year or two late for their uhhh. . . Bronze generation, but they're not going to give up because of one bad performance. Essien's loss is huge for Ghana and one win doesn't change that.

Before the World Cup started, I thought that Slovakia was the best team in their group mostly because I didn't think much of Paraguay and less of Italy and Slovakia's qualifying group seemed pretty tough. Their plan against New Zealand was so conservative and made no sense against a team that was likely to have 3 losses, but it's over with . . .

Slovakia won't be playing defensively as a draw makes the Italian game a must win. They will be dictating pace and I'm hoping that they can get the early goal and not play so defensively with a lead and just on fundamentals, there has to be inherent value backing a team off a draw against New Zealand against a team theat just drew against Italy. I like the value of the win

Slovakia (World Cup) +300* vs Paraguay (World Cup)

If I could find a Slovakian fan, I'm sure she'd look llike. . .

Italy didn't disappoint in their opener. They're going to have to break a team down and while New Zealand is horrible, they have to be confident with recent results and Italy haven't won this year and throughout all of qualifying had an offense that scored 3 goals one time.

Still have Brazil -130 from a few days ago. It's up to -140  , but it's still too short for the team that's winning this thing.

Both teams will be facing some serious tie-breaking procedures to either get out of their group (Portugal) or avoid Brazil in the first game of the knockout round(Spain). If they can get the goals , they'll be pushing forward against teams facing elimination who won't be all-out defending.

Risking 1/2 unit each

Spain (World Cup) -2? +168* vs Honduras (World Cup)
Portugal (World Cup) -2? +330* vs North Korea (World Cup)

And also, this team, when they need a win and it's not against Brazil, has been unstoppable for 4 years.

The cool thing about the world cup is countries are able to put their best foot forward and their soccer tells a little bit about what makes their Country special . . . and conversely can show exactly what's wrong with the Country.

NB: These are the opinions of a correspondent I listened to today and aren't mine, I just thought that they were interesting for a number of reasons, one of which is handicapping.

The 1998 team lifted France and was representative of what a Multi-Ethnic France can accomplish. I heard a radio show today where the French correspondent stated that this team isn't being being viewed with disgust, embarassment or anger, it's sorrow and not in a sporting sense. The team is looked on as the younger, immigrant community that demands respect and gives none and puts itself over the collective. Players who wave at the camera during "La Marseillaise" are compared to the Italians, the Americans and even the North Koreans when they sing their national anthems loudly. And it would be one thing if the players were a tight knit unit, but their reactions to the press are not consistent.

Today, the coach said not to expect much from the team and when he was asked if some players had told him they do not want to play the game, he answered evasively.

So, while they are a better roster, they are a team playing for no one except the individual playing a team playing for a continent. And while the South Africans have some of their own turmoil, it a mole hill compared to the French Mountain

Trust that the Mexicans will try and do the right thing and go forward, but it's going to be tough to break down a bunkered and dangerous Uruguay

Uruguay (World Cup) pk +110* vs Mexico (World Cup) risking 1 unit

South Koreans can play for a draw and will invite the Nigerian attack and wait until their speed and endurance take over in the second half

South Korea (World Cup) +145* vs Nigeria (World Cup) risking 1 unit

This line came out earlier and I had to jump on it because I can't imagine Spain bowing out now and while Chile plays attractively, their ability to play the game in the opponents half (their strategy) will be extremely limited against Spain.

In qualifying, they were strong against weaker opposition but got pounded by Brazil 2-0 and 4-2 and lost to Argentina 2-0 away and actually won 1-0 at home. . . in a game so shocking that Maradona became a manager.

Denmark/Cameroon was a great match and was full of end to end action because you had a Cameroon team full of attack and a Denmark team countering with speed. The Danes are going to find it much tougher to break down a defensive Japanese side who can advance with a tie. I think that this game is a 1-0 or 2-0 scoreline

Japan (World Cup)/Denmark (World Cup) Under 2? -141* to win 1 unit

Italy has a 0-0 or a 1-0 in them and will grind it out. Not as much attack from Slovakia who I thought was going to surprise earlier, but didn't like their fight or sense of urgency in attack against Paraguay

Italy (World Cup)/Slovakia (World Cup) Under 2? -142* to win 1 unit
