guess we have the same tastes. the mitch rapp series is probably my favorite series. he's just a badass. two books before was pretty poor, but this last one executive decision i think was great.....as well as the older ones with the cia mentor who dies in book 3 or 4.

as for baldacci, i loved his first 3 or 4 books. Simple truth is what got me back into reading after a long hiatus. he's gotten worse as he's gone on, but the camel club series is mildly entertaining imo. last man standing was one of the worst books i ever read.

You know I think they all start to fizzle after too much of a good thing they all start to fall into that "skeleton writing mentality" and basically every book is the same and, well you know the rest. Which is why most of your hardcore readers can't really stay with one author forever, see Stephen King, but I liked "Dirk Pitt" too and usually read all the Patterson novels and Sandford, Follett, etc... Mitch Rapp is definitely one of my fave characters of any of them though. Bad ass fake dude. I just kind of let one author lead me to the next by reading the book reviews.

Hope this helps,
FDC

Lee Child is another really good author I love to read. His main character is the thinking man's bad ass, Jack Reacher. He's got a new book due out in mid- May.

Here is the first chapter of that book.

Also FWIW Patrick Johnson is a pretty good writer. More international thrillers and whatever the feck happened to Tom Clancy. I miss the big detailed international mega thrillers.

great idea, I watch way too much tv. My wife is an avid reader, I haven't read a whole book in years. I only read the newspaper, magazines or internet articles. Obviously I am a sports lover, mainly football anyone have any good football books to read. I have a book about Bill Romanowski that I have read about 1/2, I will have to find it and read the rest.

Book #2 completed: Back of the Napkin

If part of your job entails you selling ideas to others whether it be internally or externally to clients, this is a fantastic book. There are parts that get a little over the top, but for the most part, the concept is decently original and very helpful. I've been incorporating it in my presentations since about halfway through it. I need more practice, but it is paying off by helping me think about complex situations in a different way.

Next up: Blood Meridian

I think this is my first fictional piece since Atlas Shrugged last year. And it's debatabel whether that is fictional or just prophetic. :SIB

Since the first of the year I've completed the Twilight series as well. I enjoyed it despite the "young reader" intentions. I also enjoyed The Boleyn Inheritance by Phillippa Gregory. Sharon Osborne's autobiography, Extreme, kept me laughing throughout! Most recently I read The Fifth Horseman by James Patterson which kept me busy for a couple of days.

As you may guess, I'm a reader! I select books based on their number of pages as well as the content. I have found that books at WalMart give more bang for the buck, with paperbacks usually $2 or more off the retail. The selection's not the best but, when you read as much as I do, the savings are worth it!

How many people here utilize the library?

I intended in making that a new year's resolution this year instead of spending the money.

Spent about an hour there today - the library here is by far the nicest one I have ever been in - coffee shop, local art gallery, play area for kids, about 100 computers for browsing the internet etc etc - anyway after selling about 100 of my books on amazon this winter, and still having a rather large collection, I am done buying books, unless they are ones I want to read and reread. Anyway, took the little one to the library and we I browsed the racks while she scooted around the floor (and rearranged books on the lowest shelf) and we took home some good looking books.

5 people you meet in heaven was a quick read, but I will have to agree with CieGrant - I thought it would be a lot more moving, but I didn't find it all that great. A nice story, but for some reason I thought it would be really touching...

Oh my...I just sold most of my philosophy books or I would send them on to you...If you are going down this path then you should put Being and Nothingness on your list. Enjoy, and remember...being-in-itself and being-for-others and being-of-being and all that good stuff or something...

Exactly my feeling from the book. I think I read it on a single flight one day and was pretty disappointed overall due to the hype. Sold it back to the bookstore at the next airport.

Always check the library 1st for a copy, then a bookstore in Iowa City, and if I strike out in those two places its off to hunt for it on the internet.

I do, mostly for audio-books. I like to highlight in non-fiction books for future reference, so I prefer to buy them. Fiction, I'll check the library first (usually), then buy if need be.

Just started Blood Meridian last night before bed. About 50 pages in and can say that I am not impressed in the least bit. I'll finish it, but I"m hoping for some major improvement from here. :(

Hey Jason, I started it the other day and am struggling with it as well. I am having a hard time following who is doing and saying what.

It's the fecking worst! I feel like I'm working on the backside of the racetrack again.

I'm trying to be interested in what is going to happen, but I am clueless right now.

I just finished up The Road by McCarthy and would love to hear anyone elses thoughts on that one. Very grim and sobering. Interesting character study of what makes humans go through the motions each day. Was considering Blood Meridian next. Maybe I can catch up to y'all.

I got my first library card in probably 15 years last week. My bookcase is full and my apartment is small, so I am going to try to save some cash and use the library more frequently.

I am planning the same routine as others mentioned. Check the library (thank god I can check the stock online), then hit a local bookstore, then maybe do Amazon.

I'm about halfway through it now and still don't know why anyone would recommend this book.

The story is just drifting and is pretty difficult to read overall.

Disappointed in my choice for my first pleasure reading book in so long. :(

It will be at least 6 months before I read another book not related to work again.

It's definitely not a fun book to read. But, I do think the emotional and humanistic payoff in the end. And afterall it's a pretty short book.

Put another way, it makes you think of the true meaning of being a parent, of doing anything for your son.

I will say the lack of quotation marks make it a bit annoying at times.
