Summerville, South Carolina
Almost hate to mention it in open fourm as most folks here would rather keep it a secret as to how truly nice life is here.
Jack, it's got MOST of everything you mentioned...it's about 20 miles outside of Charleston, SC. It's small town living with all the charm of an old 1950's movie. Main Street looks like, well...sorta like Main Steet in Disneyland. The word, "quaint" is often on the lips of those that visit here.
It was established as a village under the cool pines...a place where early Charlestonians built their summer houses. A place where high school football is king (the country's longest winning high school football coach still coaches at Summerville High), where the kids hang out at the Ye Ole Fashioned Ice Cream Parlor and still say yes-sir and no-maam, where there are more churches than gas stations, where there's a non-motorized parade on 4th of July and Chistmas on Main Street, etc. etc.
Real estate prices are going up, but people moving from Charleston and other areas consider things to be quite a bargain. More bang for the buck so to speak.
As I mentioned, Charleston is just 20 miles down the road. Charleston is one of the most magical cities I've ever been in...and I've been fortunate to have traveled extensively.
The history, art, and culture is incredible. The eclectic mix of people is like few cities I've known. You've got everything from highly refined internationally educated and cultured folk, to the Southern Bubba that loves Ernhart, his hunting dog, and his pickup truck (usually in that order) and are as friendly and down to earth as the day is long.
Charleston is also known for it's restaurants...some of the finest cuisine you'll find in this country, or in Europe for that matter. It abounds in art and culture with a wonderful vibrant downtown. Living downtown, on the peninsula, is high cultured living with the blue-blood families on Rainbow Row to the South of Broad folk. At every turn, history is brought to life.
It's a great college town (College of Charleston) with an active night life. Great rock and roll, jazz, and blues clubs everywhere. (All kind of celebs roll in, e.g., Hootie and the Blowfish come back home now and then and do a surprise gig at a small club, etc.) Then of course there's the beaches and the beach communities. Amazing mix of beaches to choose from with an amazing mix of people. Hardcore shrimpers to hardcore suffer dudes to incredible super models are on the shore. And golf?? Come on, this is the Carolina's...need I say more?
About the only thing it doesn't have is real close proximity to a major sports city...however Charlotte is only 3 hrs away. Atlanta is a six hour drive, but makes for a nice weekend get-away to catch the Braves or the Falcons. College football is an hour up the road in Columbia with Gamecock fans that are second to none.
You want to catch the mountains in the fall when the leaves change color, but don't want to have to put up with living in a cold environment? It's just a day trip into the mountains of N. Carolina and then back home where it doesn't get so cold.
All in all...you could say I think Summerville, SC is one of the most wonderful places on earth to live. But after you move here, Jack, then sshhhhh...please just don't tell anyone else about it, we kinda don't want to get any bigger.
