The Windy City
Princeville, on the northern end of the island of Kauai, Hawaii. NEVER CAUGHT UP describes the island perfectly, but the northern end is the best spot on the island. Absolutely the most gorgeous place I've ever been in. We went on our honeymoon there years back, loved it so much bought a week of time-share there. We go there every year. Yearly high and low temp on the northern end is between 78 and 73. Only a short 15min plane ride to honolulu. If there is heaven on earth, it's Kauai, Hawaii. The cost of living is high, obviously, but definitely where I want to spend my retirement years......13 years and counting:D well, according to my projection.

Chattanooga Tennessee is a great place to live. The river the mountains, it is beautiful. Rarely ever gets snow. You are in a mid-size city that very clean. It is not too big and not to small either. It is really a wonderful city. I will moving back there after graduation. Email me if you have questions, I really think it a great place to live and work.

Forgot this. The size is 155,000. Chattanooga is 1.5 hours from Nashville, 1.75 hours from Atlanta, 3 hours from the Home of the Alabama Crimson Tide, and 1.5 hours from Knoxville. It will get into the high 80s during the summer but the winter is very mild. The mountains protect us from a lot of the weather. Living in Alabama really made me realize how much I missed the mountains and living in a valley.

Finally: NO STATE INCOME TAX

Jack---
I don't know if this helps, but I can tell you where NOT to live............exactly where I live!!!

Lower Fairfield County in Connecticut (suburbs of New York City) are, in short,........

TOO EXPENSIVE
TOO CONGESTED
TOO PRETENTIOUS
LACK of DOWN-to-EARTH WOMEN

In short, why, then, do I live here?

I love my job (gym teacher at an elementary school).........and I was raised here.

I guess I'm a sucker!

Florida
here's where I have been:

Clearwater Beach--
lived there 10 years
Great if you were young, but forget it at your age
I thought it was the greatest in my 20's

Nashville,Tn
Supposedly has more millionaires per capita then any other place
Great place for a visit, but forget their winters
I moved there in May and left at the end of September-
Too damn cold

Oakville (outside Toronto)
another great summer spot-
spent 3 1/2 months there

Cloudcroft, NM
You have to go there some winter for a visit-
Small town right outside White Sands
Been there many times

Orlando, Jacksonville, Sarasota
Hated them all - Hot as hell and too many people

Currently live in Pompano Beach
about 7-8 miles N of Ft Laud
about 30 miles N of Miami
Must be OK-
Been in S Florida since 1988
hell of a lot cooler than the West coast of Florida in the summer, and warmer in the winter
cost of living is low
plenty to do
good road system - Turnpike, US 1, I 95
Main Drawback- May 1st to October 30th
Hot as HELL !
Other main drawback-
All home pro teams suck, but are fun to bet against - especially when they go on the road

In conclusion,
Buy a Condo in S Florida and rent it out six months of the year
Ditto up north

I know you said that florida was out, but i would recommend checking the panhandle of florida. like dogs that bark said, Destin is beautiful! about 10 miles from ft walton beach. lived there and pensacola for 5 years before moving to this crappy state! :D

there always seems to be a breeze from the gulf of mexico and when i was there, it was beautiful. the BEACHES are the best. emerald green water (called the emerald coast for a reason) and the sand is crystal white (looks like expensive hotel ashtray sand)never hot to the feet. my apartment in pensacola was $399 month. and another good part of living there (not as hot as further down) is NO STATE INCOME TAX!!!!!!!!

SAN DIEGO IS GREAT TOO. BUT DAMN EXPENSIVE!! good luck wherever you move. TOM

Taoist,
I was addicted to fishing out on Percy Priest Lake System. It was the best - about 10 miles of lake systems - didn't matter if it was day or night, I hauled my boat out there. Also spent lots of time partying in downtown Nashville. But the weather isn't friggin' cold ?
Check out these nighttime temps in late March (I remember going to the Old Spagetti Factory in downtown Nashville about 6pm one night in Sept - was about 65 when I walked in, left about 9pm and the temp had dropped to the high 20's with a stiff north wind gusting to 25MPH - brrrrr):

Dr. - I spend more time on Center Hill than on Priest, but the whole mid-state area is repleat with lakes, rivers and streams.... A great place for a little outdoor activities...if you're into that sort of thing....

As far as temps go, tempatures are kinda like chicks...they're all relative. What one man finds perfect - another might find a little too hot or a little too cold. ;)

...IMO mid-Tennessee has a pretty sweet balance...not too hot in the summer and not too cold in winter.... :D

To each his own I suppose....

Here's wishing Jack success in his search for the perfect retirement home....

Anywhere but Here, this place is miserable, This place is why I'm So bored! Cullman Sucks!

Go West! Man anywhere in Colorado is the Shit! You will need about a year or so to get used to the different climate and people but once you do! OH Man it is the best feeling in the world to wake up in the Rockies! Man that John Denver was on to something!
My uncle is a Park Ranger for Rocky Mountain National Park ( West Side Grand Lake area ) and he started taking me to Colorado with him when I was 10 years Old! I have been hooked on that place for some 17 years and Would move back in a heart beat! I lived in Winter Park for a year, but you would probably enjoy somewhere like Boulder, Ft.Collins, or somewhere near Denver!

Either there or North Florida or the Bay area in Alabama! Gulf Shores ( Ft. Morgan ) somewhere like that or the Bahamas, Caymans, Alaska, Northern California ( good BUD ) Hell this one chick named Julia Butterfly moved to Northern California and liked it so much hell she lived in a tree! You might want to consider a house though!

Hope this helps, if not you can go live in Auburn Alabama! the best of both worlds, your from Alabama and Auburn at the same time! A perfect world!

Jack;

Jack;

You gotta move to the SF bay area. It's the greatest place on earth to live. The climate is great, it is not too far from anything that you might want to do. Lots of good sports teams, great places to eat, only a 3 or so hour drive to Nevada for gambling. The best thing about the area is that it is so culturaly diverse, so many, many different people of different cultures that it,s great. The biggest thing that is has going against it is the cost of real estate. But one can move out a bit and still find some good housing deals. Think about it.

The greatest place to live in U.S is in EAST TENNESSEE. Maryville is the ideal place, 20 minutes from Knoxville(home of the vols), which has a pop. of 150,000.Knoxville is a great place also. East Tennessee offers all four seasons, with the summers hot, but not too hot. The winters can be a little chilly sometimes, but we only got snow one time this year. Maryville was rated in the top ten places to live in a magazine that i saw last year, and in the top ten also for the safest places to live. East Tennesse offers many golf courses, lakes galoure- with good fishing, hunting, rivers, and among all- super nice people.

Hope this helps

Jack - This is a beauitful little college town 20 min west of Sacramento, A little expensive but nice, 15 min. from Arco Arena, and 1 and 1/2 hours to SF. You have the Napa Valley on your hip side just miles away, 2 hours you have the beauitful coast of Mendocino (west) and 2 hours north you have Tahoe. And 4 hours north yout in the land of the Giant Redwoods. Great center to be in. For very reasonable cost of living and value Sac Town is great.
Ever need more info on any central Ca. spots just give a Hollar.

Whatever you do

Whatever you do

stay out of Missouri, the coldest windiest winters, the hottest humid summers. We celebrate a nice mild day around here.

Newport Beach, CA in Orange County, CA, located almost exactly between LA and San Diego. Climate is absolutely perfect. In the summer we only have to use the A/C 5-6 days. Always cool evenings and warm days. We live very close to the ocean and the views are spectacular. Housing prices are a high, but it costs to live in paradise. Winters are never cold, usually sunny warm days and cool nights.

We have some of the greatest skiing in the winter in the mountains, only an hour or so away. We have the entertainment capital of the world about an hour to the north (LA & Hollywood)

We have all major sports, NO FB:( and plenty of indian casinos only 30-40 minutes away.

Best of all Las Vegas is only 3 1/2 to 4 hours away by car and 45 minutes by air.

You get it all here in So California.

Input,

Input,

but as with my style it is a short opinion...

Bay Area in CA: Beautiful... centrally located for all activities, but expensive.

San Diego: Perfect weather, what else needs to be said. However, having knowledge of Spanish would be helpful.

Otherwise anyplace, Somewhere on the outskirts of Oahu. I fell in love with Hanuama Bay (National Park)...absolutely beautiful!

If you're considering Virginia, stay east of I-95, at least down to Richmond. Anything west gets more than their share of snow! I remember the Va. Beach area being pretty nice, but it's become heavily developed and the cost of living has risen dramatically since the late 70's.

I saw where several people suggested the Charlotte, NC area. I have relatives there and other than the freak nature shows (a hurricane diverted inland and a few ice storms in the last 10-15 years), the weather is mild. The cost of living is reasonable and you're close to pro sports.

Just my two pennies worth!

Oregon

Oregon is the best...I east of portland and the sun shines here damn near every day. When I first moved here I checked out some houses that were 150k and 4000 sq feet.

You can get a mom and pop house for around 100. Property is cheap as hell, the people don't get any friendlier, and the weather kicks ass.

Once you go country you will never go back!
