Helpful information here about security with cryptocurrencies.

http://avc.com/2017/06/getting-hacked-lessons-learned/

One thing is that if you are in this for the gamble speculation, then you will likely continually be at risk as the easiest way to have funds available is to have them on exchanges.

Coinbase is known as being one of the "safest" but it is also vulnerable (see Cody's story). But following the rules of the above post will keep you "safer"

The other major problem with Coinbase is that it is limited to 3 coins (BTC, ETH, and LTC) at the moment. I use Poloniex and Kraken to trade other coins.

Where can i purchase Bitcoin other than coinbase? Thanks!

So Dawg you appear to have a pretty good understanding of this. For me personally I'm taking a hold position- I'm not looking to flip like a day trader. I'm in for all-or-nothing- I'm okay with losing it all but in reality I'm in the game for the big hit (7 figs+). If that is the case, am I correct to assume external storage like the link you showed earlier is the best and safest option?

So if I am using poloniex as my exchange, I can then export from poloniex to the external drive?

Each exchange has its own rules as to how many confirmations are necessary to clear a process.

As a general rule, it is more secure to not keep your holdings on any of the exchanges. If you are trading in and out, then this is more difficult due to transfer fees and time. If you are holding any coins for the long term, I recommend getting on hardware.

This is a solid (but not the only) choice for the major currencies: https://www.ledgerwallet.com/products/ledger-nano-s

I see this ledger nano s anywhere from $65 to $250. Why?

Unfortunately yes but in 2015 and it was for a home down payment. Could have paid less but learned the value of disciplined holding in a down market.
