A lot of very good fighters have been caught in the first round before they were ready to get hit, and it happened to Jones. Easy to be wise after the event, but I should have realised there was most likely residual damage from those KO defeats Jones suffered, plus getting ALMOST stopped in the rubber match with Tarver... Jones looked so good at the weigh-in that he fooled me into backtracking on my original Green pick ... No one expected Jones to stop Green, that obviously was never going to happen, but Jones looked so good against an admittedly shot Lacy, and he looked so good mentally and physically at the weigh in, that it seemed he would have a good chance of outsmarting the big, tough Aussie. Maybe if he hadn't got caught it could have happened, but frankly I doubt it. The stoppage was correct; Jones was pretty much out if it. ... Hopkins-Ornelas: As soon as Hopkins came in wearing what looked like 16-ounce Grant pillows I knew we were in for a 12-round exhibition. I love scientific boxing but I found Hopkins-Ornelas rather boring. ... I'm sorry, I'm getting tired of Bernard's throat-slitting gesture. He acts like a killer, then hands in a safety first performance.

I'm equally guilty. I also felt RJ was pretty much shot after the 2nd tarver fight. I said several times that somebody that follows through w/their plan of attacking RJ, will beat him and probably stop him. YET I bought into the hype and wagered RJ by dec. I'm really kicking myself for not sticking with my original feeling on this. RJ was/is indeed shot and we lost that opportunity on the perfect guy to exploit it...lesson learned.

That's what I love most about this business, Romi ... you never stop learning. That said, first-round KOs are the nightmare of anyone who has a position on the "wrong" side in a fight. Many fighters who got caught and stopped in the first three minutes might have done much better if only they had a chance to get into the damned fight: Emile Griffith, Patterson, Shavers, Khan, John Ruiz, Weaver stopped very quickly (63 seconds as I recall) by Dokes, Sumbu Kalambay, Pat Cowdell, Jorge Linares, Vic Toweel, Masamori Tokuyama, Pone Kingpetch and many, many others suffered first-round KO losses and some of these guys were superb fighters. ... Kingpetch and Tokuyama avenged their first-round KO losses, of course.

Agreed. When you stop learning, you are basically done as a capper.

I remember several of those fights, of course the recent ones including Ruiz. The one that sticks out for me is Nunns picture perfect left on a VERY good fighter in Kalambay. It was a thing of beauty. Dokes got caught by the limited Weaver and would have been in the fight had he just been able to break a sweat. I recall a very early stoppage on that one. Didn't see it but must have been a shock when Quarry iced the undefeated Shavers. I remember Cowdell giving the great Salvador Sanchez fits back on ABC Wide World Of Sports. One fight you left off the list was Ali/Liston II. Would have been interesting to see if Liston could have dealt with Ali a little differently in the 2nd go.

Oops Romi, just edited my post, I meant to say Weaver getting stopped very quickly by Dokes. .... Strange as it may seem, I think that Liston was intimidated by Ali and maybe a bit scared of him. This was the first time anyone had really stood up to Liston and confronted him, and I don't think that Sonny had the stomach for a long fight with Ali. I was a massive fan of Liston's but I think there was a bit of quit involved in the two Ali fights.

amen,graham....i`m in the minority, but,if angelo dundee hadn`t forced ali out of his corner in the first go-round,the boxing landscape would probably look considerably different today...

no ali=bad for boxing?...yeah,probably...but i think ali made some unfriendly habits(rope-a-dope,excessive holding, acting like a moron in the ring) acceptable in boxing...

as i said,i know i`m in the minority...

Great posts guys, I also thought Quintana was caught ragged and cold against Williams, and needs a few rounds to find his rhythm.

Congrats to Green backers, I forgot all about the fight and slept through it.

Made the same bad...pt is, the fight would have been competitive had he broken a sweat, as was most/all of the fights mentioned.

Massive money came in on Jones the day of the fight.
The only places I saw strong leans toward Green were Gabe Montoya and the boards here at Madjack (Quanah and Matt). Gotta give props to the guys here - we had a great read on this one.

I couldn't believe the support I saw for Jones. It was a fair pick to side with Jones decision, but to lay the 3 to 1 price on Jones at this point in his career.....NO NO NO

Tim Coleman +300 - Very Small
I have not seen Coleman much, but the Greek has looked very tentative in his last few fights and I Coleman's speed should beat Mike to the punch for a UD.

More to come...

Is Arnaoutis still with McGirt? That alone would make me play Coleman, no joke.

Is this a joke? Is Holly Holm fighting a real midget?
That girl looks tiny !

:mj07: :mj07: :mj07: :mj07: :mj07:

From the Isleta Casino & Resort for tomorrow night?s Fresquez-promoted ?Bad Blood? card:

Holly Holm 139.4 vs. Melissa Hernandez 134.75
* For the WIBA world welterweight title. Holm originally 140.5

Plenty of drama at today?s weigh-in: Despite weighing in earlier in the morning on the same exact scale, at 137.5, Holm was a half-pound over.

During the pose-off, Hernandez presented Holm, whom she?d been calling ?The Rabbit,? a bundle of carrots to munch on after the weigh-in. The incident failed to amuse Holm.

I don't like -350 for an over but I'll be surprised to see Mightie Mike/coleman end early. I hit it for a few bucks. No headbutts or flukie cuts please :00x11

Good call on the draw.

I just saw how timid and confused Arnie looked against Ortiz. Every McGirt fighter ends up with the deer in the headlights look during their fight, they seem to have no gameplan and can't make adjustments.

I might take the draw and Cole.

More picks...

More picks...

Arreola vs Minto Under 7.5 -145 -Medium
Arreola just has too much power for Minto who will be there to be hit. Minto has a decent chin, but Arreola will be looking to make a statement that he is still a contender.

Witherspoon vs Thompson Over 9.5 -120 -Medium
This will be a jab fest with a high punch volume by each man. I favor Tony because of talent and facing better opposition, but Witherspoon throws 60+ punches a round as opposed to Tony with about 40+. The judges might award volume, not accurary.

I also like Paul Williams vs Sergio Gabriel Martinez Over 9.5 but -170 is a little too steep. I'm holding out to find a better line here.

Anyone know any thing about Kevin Mitchell?
