72-hole plays:

Rocco Mediate to beat Robert Karlsson -111 @ Simon Bold
Karlsson may have had some decent finishes on the European Tour this season, but being the tallest player on Tour and having a very high ball flight does not make him suitable for links golf. Having missed the cut on his last six attempts at the Open Championship is proof enough. Mediate has a far better record including 18th here in 1996 and has been in good form of late

Tom Watson to beat Sandy Lyle +100 @ Paddy Power [2 units]
Don't understand how they can make Lyle the favorite. He has been struggling to make cuts on the European Tour, whereas Watson's confidence is maintained with being competitive on the Senior PGA Tour. He has dominated this event and continued to play well in this event. In the last five Opens, Watson would have beaten Lyle four times. This will be another.

Will have more plays later.

Back trouble may rule out Bernhard Langer
18-Jul-2001 10:31 (BST)

There is a fitness doubt hanging over the appearance of Bernhard Langer in the championship which begins tomorrow. After he withdrew from the Scottish Open at Loch Lomond with back trouble, he was forced to make hourly stops on the drive to Lytham, so severe was the pain.

He is having regular treatment and, if fit, he will play at 8.50am with Steve Flesch of America and Brett Rumford of Australia.

2 more speciality market plays both in the top Anzac market
Greg Turner - a fine links player who has won this category twice in recent years including the last time here at Lytham 16-1 Stanley (1/4 3)
Nathan Green - somewhat more speculative! Played well in the ANZ tour earlier this season and has been plying his trade on the Canadian tour (with 2 top 5 finishes - cheers Stan!). Nothing particularly exciting in that but he won his qualifying tournament easily and is clearly a good links player - he also is just about last out on day 1 which could well be the easiest conditions (due to the early forecast for wind) 33-1 SportingOdds (1/4 4)
