The Auburn fans are so delusional it's ridiculous. There could be a payoff on video tape and they would deny it. Of course who could doubt the second most penalized program in NCAA history?

.

You lose credibility with this statement.

Kenny Rogers, the former Mississippi State player who ESPN.com reported allegedly sought money to sign Cam Newton to a national letter of intent with Mississippi State, said Thursday that Newton's father, Cecil, put a price tag on his son.

Rogers, in an interview with ESPN 103.3 in Dallas, was asked if Cecil Newton ever told him how much money it would take to get his son to play for Mississippi State. "Yes he did," Rogers said. Asked how much, he said: "Anywhere between $100,000 and $180,000."

Later in the interview, Rogers said he and Cecil Newton first talked after Cam Newton left Florida following the 2008 season. In the course of their conversations, he said Cecil Newton told him "it's not gonna be free this time."

Rogers said he only was involved with Cecil Newton in regards to Mississippi State.

Rogers said on Nov. 28, 2009, he and Cecil Newton followed each other out of Starkville, Miss., after the Ole Miss-Mississippi State game. He said Newton asked him: "What do you think is going to happen? You think it's going to go through?"

He said he was referred to a Mississippi State booster named Bill Bell. Rogers said he left Bell a message telling him he was with Mr. Newton, who wanted to know if the deal was going to happen.

Bell has not commented publicly on the allegation.

Rogers said he didn't know if Cam Newton knew about the request for money. He said he did not meet Cam Newton until Nov. 27, 2009.

Rogers said he didn't know anything about Newton's recruitment at Auburn or any other school. He said he had "no idea" why Newton chose Auburn or if Auburn paid Newton.

Rogers spoke with his attorney on the phone. The attorney, Doug Zeit, said there was never any discussion about Rogers getting paid out of the money Cecil Newton was asking.

Mississippi State officials declined comment on Rogers' interview Thursday.

A person who answered the telephone at Cecil Newton's home in Atlanta said he wasn't there. The person said he didn't know where Cecil Newton was.

Auburn declined comment through spokesman Kirk Sampson.

In an e-mail to ESPN.com, an NCAA spokesman said: "The solicitation of cash or benefits by a prospective student-athlete or another individual on his or her behalf is not allowed under NCAA rules."

In another e-mail, a spokesman said: "Generally speaking, if a third party is marketing a student-athlete, there could be potential agent violations. Under NCAA rules, it doesn't matter what you call yourself or how you are compensated, the actions are what triggers agent violation rules."

Last Friday, in an interview with ESPN 103.3 FM in Dallas, Rogers denied having solicited Newton to Mississippi State.

Earlier this week, ESPN reported two sources who recruit for Mississippi State said Cecil and Cam Newton, in separate phone conversations, told them that Cam Newton's college choice would be part of a pay-for-play plan.

Prior to Newton's commitment to Auburn, one of the recruiters said Cecil Newton told him it would take "more than a scholarship" to bring his son to Mississippi State, a request the source said the school would not meet. Cecil Newton also referred the recruiter to a third person who would provide more specifics, the source said.

After Newton committed to Auburn, another source said an emotional Cam Newton phoned another recruiter to express regret that he wouldn't be going to Mississippi State, stating that his father, Cecil, had chosen Auburn for him because "the money was too much."

Mississippi State compliance officials relayed the alleged conversations to Southeastern Conference compliance officials in January, according to two other sources close to the football program. The school said because it didn't get the information requested to the SEC until July 2010 because of "time-consuming eligibility issues involving non-football matters in the winter and spring of 2010."

The NCAA is investigating allegations surrounding the Newtons in regards to the recruiting process. Cam Newton, who is having a Heisman-caliber season for No. 2 Auburn, declined comment.

A week ago, ESPN.com reported a man who said he represented Newton allegedly was soliciting a six-figure payment to secure his signature on a national letter of intent. Former Mississippi State quarterback John Bond told ESPN.com a teammate of Bond's at Mississippi State in the early 1980s contacted him soon after Newton's official visit to Mississippi State during the Ole Miss game in December, and said he was representing Newton.

Sources told ESPN.com the former teammate was Rogers, who played at Mississippi State from 1982 to '85. Bond said an NCAA investigator came to Mississippi to meet with him in early September as well as with Mississippi State officials.

When interviewed by ESPN.com last Thursday at the family's home in Atlanta, Cecil Newton denied any wrongdoing.

Rogers has a company called Elite Football Preparation, which holds camps in Alabama, Chicago and Mississippi, and matches football prospects with colleges.

Information from The Associated Press and ESPN.com's Pat Forde, Mark Schlabach and Chris Low is included in this report.

The one thing that could really blow this up for the Newtons is if the two coaches from Miss St, that Rogers referred to when he said that Newton's dad said it's going to take some money, come out and say that it did happen.

IMO Miss St is in the clear here unless there's something not being reported. Rogers said the coach didn't want to hear anything about money. Rogers wouldn't say who the coaches are but you know if certain people ask he'll have to tell.

this is basically the original story with the ESPN source speaking about it in person. Nothing new brought to the table.

One major point I think everybody is forgetting in all of this: Nobody besides Auburn fans drinking coolaid and pumping sunshine thought Newton would be This Good. Before he step foot on the field for the first time he was a "juco transfer qb that stole laptops"... which is why I stand by the Opinion that if Auburn was 6-4 and Newton wasn't leading for heisman, the story would still be being dealt with privately.

My thoughts on this story (since it's a message board and opinions are welcomed):

- this guy contradicted himself. 2 days ago he said he hadn't talked to the newtons or john bond. so the story is probably bogus anyway

- unless he can prove tapes/video, its all hearsay anyway. the only way to prove this would be to have another source say the same thing. The other sources would be MSU "recruiters" which leads me to my next point

- he claims that he talked with newton and 2 MSU coaches/assistants. MSU turned in everything they had in the SEC/NCAA in January/July. This would have been reported with that also. If ANYTHING would have been suspicious they wouldn't have let Cam play to start the season.

- I don't believe it's illegal to solicit money. It's a violation to accept money. The same people have already said MSU would not pay and that is why Cam is not in school at MSU. I feel pretty certain (through "sources") that Cam did not get money from us and Auburn is clean (in this issue)

- Best news for AU is that Rogers is not / has never said "Auburn is offering X money." AU has not been implicated in anything. Only way it would affect AU is if Cam was ruled ineligible from the start which he was not.

- Most people don't know - The FBI is on the case AT CECIL NEWTON'S REQUEST.

so let me get this straight, Dad of star college player sees reports that are incorrect regarding his son's recruitment and them soliciting money. Dad and son profess their innocence and then Dad picks up the phone to get the FBI on the case?

Didn't know that the FBI was in the business of following up on false reports appearing in media outlets. Guess the local FBI branch has been a bit slow in other cases and was willing to look into the matter.

believe whatever you want to jkm. while you're on the ground laughing remember that the main source behind this whole story is a crooked ex-nfl player that's already under investigation of the NFLPA.

And two MSU coaches that have never said Auburn even offered the kid anything.

You would think if this was true then Rogers would have been contacted by the FBI by now. He and his lawyer said that they haven't spoken to the FBI. IMO he would be 1 or 2 on their phone call list.

Dad is trying to clear his name in a money laundering scheme where his name and his 5 churches all stand to lose every bit of respect they have. pretty important for churches these days. he has a lawyer, i'd imagine a very good one that he paid cash from the bag of money under his bed. so i don't think he's making any decisions himself.

the FBI needs Rogers like I need a pregnancy test. Guy is already being investigated by another agency for being a crook. he's not claiming Auburn paid anything or even made an offer. FBI only needs to speak with parties in question of actual money transfer = Newton / Auburn / Boosters.

Only coach that needs to be mentioned is Gus. Not very well known that he had to convince the rest of the staff to even consider newton. i don't know if he can sell a 2-year eligible juco qb being worth 200K

Bottom line is Auburn has done nothing wrong. SEC Auburn and NCAA have know all this since last Dec. and then add the fact that Miss St continued to recuit Cam.

Also, how many team were after Newton's signature last year - 3

If anyone thought he could do what he has done would more schools not been after him. He came to Auburn to compete in a 3 way qb race to be the starter - he was the 3rd string qb at Florida.

Why cant anyone be happy for this kid - he is 20 years old and has an infectious smile.

Time will tell but why not right now enjoy watching this kid play some ball.

Wrong. It is a violation to solicit money.

Have any of you not seen the twinkle in Cam's eye when he runs out onto the field? If had then you would have just put this issue to bed a long time ago. It is glorious

Auburn fans, it does no good to come to this thread and try to defend the situation. You have a lot of corndogs and mullets that think this is nothing but funny. The only program in question right now is Miss. St. they are burying themselves while trying to look innocent. I wonder why the booster that was going to fund the payment took off to Costa Rica the day after all this came out?
