Not giving the Pels much of a chance

The Pelicans are 10.5-point underdogs as they travel to Utah to take on a Jazz team who have won 21 of 31 at home this season, and eight of the last nine versus the Pelicans.

Utah is holding opponents to 105.2 ppg and 44 percent shooting on their home court this season. Over their most recent 10 games in the head-to-head, the Jazz have limited the Pelicans to 100 ppg. Look for another strong defensive effort from Utah and back Under New Orleans? team total of 109.5.

Nugget?s road woes to continue

It has been 12 straight road losses in San Antonio for the Nuggets who will try to win for the first time at AT&T Center since 2012.

The Spurs have played much better basketball at home, holding opponents to 106.4 points per game, on 45 percent shooting, ranking defensively in the top-10 of the league in both categories. They?ve had the Nuggets number over the years and returning home has been a recipe for success for San Antonio as they have won two straight after an extended road trip. Back them on the money line today.

Another likely blowout

Milwaukee are the largest favorites on Monday?s card (12.5-points), as they travel to Phoenix to take on a Suns team currently sitting at 13-51.

The Bucks have been one of the best all around teams this season, and defensively they are holding opponents to 108.1 points per game on a league best 43.3 percent shooting. With the Suns averaging only 106.5 points per game, they look to be in for a long night.

Milwaukee have done a great job defending opposing small forward? allowing only 19.1 points on 42 percent shooting. Look for them to make things difficult on Suns SF Kelly Oubre Jr. and back Under his points, rebounds, assists total of 23.5.

Tanking for Zion

The Knicks have won only three of their most recent 24 games, including just one of their most recent eight on the road. Today the Knicks take on a Kings team who have not disappointed as favorites this year posting a 14-2 record, and covering the spread in 22 of their 32 home games. The Knicks will be without Frank Ntilikina, and most likely DeAndre Jordan.

Despite the huge spread, look for Sacramento to take care of business at home versus a Knicks squad looking for the best chance to draft first overall. Take the Kings to cover as 11-point favorites.

Lackluster in La-La Land

The Lakers have lost four of their most recent five games and have really struggled since the All-Star Break. Today the Lakers play a Clippers team who have historically done well versus the Lakers winning 18 of the most recent 21 contests, and nine of the last 10 on the road.

The Under has been a profitable play when these two teams meet up, with it cashing in 12 of the most recent 17 in the head-to-head, and six of the last eight at Staples Center. With the Lakers in desperation mode, but only averaging 111.8 points per game, take the game total Under 235.

Tuesday?s 6-pack

? Virginia 79, Syracuse 53? Cavaliers went into a dome, made 18-25 on the arc. Wow.

? NJIT 83, Florida Gulf Coast 78? Minor upset in Atlantic Sun tourney.

? Heat 114, Hawks 113? Dwyane Wade scored 23 points off the bench.

? Spurs 104, Nuggets 103? San Antonio leads #9 seed Sacramento by three games.

? Grad transfer QB Nick Starkel jumps from Texas A&M to Arkansas.

? Looks like Rams, Cowboys are playing a preseason game in Hawai?i this summer.

Quote of the Day
?To a degree, he?s hurt the game. And what I mean by that is I go into these high school gyms, I watch these kids and the first thing they do is run to the three-point line. You are not Steph Curry.?
ESPN?s Mark Jackson, back in 2015.

Tuesday?s quiz
Where did Tony Bennett coach before moving to Virginia?

Monday?s quiz
There no World Series because the baseball players were on strike in 1994.

Sunday?s quiz
Patrick Ewing played with the Knicks for 15 years; he finished his career with the Orlando Magic.

*****************************************************************

Tuesday?s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but??

13) Stephen Zimmerman is 6-foot-11 and 22 years old; he plays an average of 19.8 mpg for the Knicks? G-League team and scores 8.2 ppg. He?s played in 85 G-League games over three years.

Here?s the thing; Mr Zimmerman was the 41st player taken in the 2016 NBA Draft; if he had stayed in college, he would be a senior at UNLV right now. Would he be better off had he stayed in school? I don?t know the answer to this question, but he is playing only 19.8 mpg now, it doesn?t seem like he is that close to getting a call back to the NBA.

You stay in college, you work harder on your game in practices, plus you can get a college degree that could prove useful if the basketball thing doesn?t work out.

12) I look at his free throw percentage and it has been right around 62% for all three of his years in the G-League, so in three years as a pro, he hasn?t improved that part of his game. He is grabbing 8.9 rebounds a game, so that number has improved, but he?s also played for three teams in three years. If the lowly Knicks don?t bring him up, then what?

Kids have to decide between staying in college and practicing more, as opposed to going pro, getting paid and playing more games while practicing less, but it is a cruel world out there, and if you?re not ready, teams move on pretty quickly. Hopefully Zimmerman will keep improving and find his way back to the NBA.

11) Was pretty sad listening to a 2:16 clip of NBA commish Adam Silver talking about so many NBA players being genuinely unhappy, because they?re isolated in the world.

Sounds like your basic first-world problem, but if you?re in your 20?s and banking a 7 or 8-figure income and you ain?t happy, I?m not sure how you fix that. I?m approaching 60 years old and am a retired government employee, but I?m pretty damn happy despite not being rich.

Maybe part of the solution for future kids is that staying in college longer would give you friendships that could propel you into adulthood with a support system, I?m not really sure, but I am pretty adamant that more kids would be better off staying in school longer, to grow up more.

10) Paul Goldschmidt doesn?t look right wearing a Cardinals? uniform.

9) Sounds like Nick Foles is headed to the Jacksonville Jaguars next season.

8) ESPN found an excellent new basketball analyst when it hired former NBA player Caron Butler, who is at ease behind the mike- he is fun to listen to.

7) ESPN.com ran an article that is highly critical of Phoenix Suns? owner Robert Sarver. Since the departure of coach Mike D?Antoni from the Suns in 2008, Phoenix has had four general managers and seven head coaches, not exactly a blueprint for success.

6) An 85-year old guy in Texas ran a mile this weekend in 7 minutes, 47 seconds. At age 85.

Seriously, if I drive 10 miles in my car, I?m looking for the drive-thru window at a Wendy?s. Running is no longer an option, not that it ever was. Kudos to this gentleman, who ran college track for Texas before I was born, back in the 50?s.

5) In the AAF over the weekend, on its first drive of the game, San Antonio ran 21 plays for 78 yards on a drive that took 9:34, but they kicked a FG, didn?t score a TD. Not sure I?ve ever seen that before, a 21-play drive, and for it not to end in a TD or a turnover, thats weird, especially since it was a 38-yard FG, they weren?t even that close to the goal line.

4) Announced attendance at the four AAF games this past weekend:
? San Diego @ Memphis: 13,621
? Orlando @ Salt Lake City: 9,302 (was snowing there)
? San Antonio @ Birmingham: 6,539
? Atlanta @ Arizona: 8,865

No idea what their attendance goals are, or if these numbers are good or bad, but they get 90,000 in Tuscaloosa for Alabama?s spring game. 6,539 in Birmingham can?t be good.

3) Generally speaking, an agent?s take is 3% of the athlete?s salary, so Scott Boras? take from the Bryce Harper bonanza figures to be $9.9M.

2) Phillies, by the way, sold 200,000 game tickets the day they announced the Harper signing.

1) The ruckus after the Nevada-Utah State game Saturday apparently was related to students storming the court after the game ended. Court storming needs to be stopped, before something really bad happens, with a player slugging someone or a huge brawl breaking out.

Game of the Night: Celtics at Warriors ? 10:35 PM EST

Before the season started, this seemed to be the destined matchup for the NBA Finals after LeBron James took his talents west to Los Angeles. The Celtics (38-26 SU, 32-32 ATS) were a Game 7 home victory away last summer from squaring off with Golden State in the Finals, but Boston was shut down by James and the Cavaliers to avoid the franchise?s first Eastern Conference title since 2010.

Boston finished as the top seed in the Eastern Conference last season, but the Celtics are currently sitting in third place of the Atlantic division with less than 20 games remaining. The C?s have dropped five of their past six games, including a 115-104 home setback to the Rockets on Sunday as two-point favorites. Boston fell behind by 22 points at halftime, while the Celtics shot 2-of-17 from three-point range if you remove the 6-for-11 effort from Kyrie Irving and Marcus Smart.

The Warriors (44-19 SU, 25-37-1 ATS) snapped a two-game skid on Saturday night as they rallied past the 76ers, 120-117. Although Golden State failed to cash as five-point favorites, the two-time defending champions erased a 12-point halftime deficit behind 34 points from Kevin Durant and 28 points from Stephen Curry. The Warriors knocked down 14 three-pointers in the win despite the absence of Klay Thompson, who sat out with a sore right knee.

Golden State continues to struggle covering numbers as Steve Kerr?s squad slipped to 1-9 ATS the last 10 games. The Warriors are back at Oracle Arena for the first time since falling to Houston in a Western Conference Finals rematch on February 23 as 12-point favorites, 118-112. Golden State owns a dreadful 3-15-1 ATS mark in its last 19 contests in Oakland, while last covering as a single-digit home favorite against Portland on November 23.

The Celtics embark on a four-game trip through California that continues to Sacramento on Wednesday with no rest, followed by a pair of contests at Staples Center to face the Lakers (Saturday) and Clippers (Monday). Boston has covered in each of its past four visits to Oracle Arena, while winning twice outright in 2016 and 2017. The Warriors got the best of the Celtics at TD Garden in late January, 115-111 to barely cash as 3 ?-point favorites. The big difference in that victory for Golden State was the 29-14 advantage at the free-throw line, as the game stayed UNDER the total of 233.

But First

A pair of division leaders hook up in Toronto as the Raptors (46-18 SU, 27-37 ATS) welcome in the Rockets (38-25 SU, 28-33-2 ATS) for another interconference showdown on TNT. Toronto has lost consecutive games three times since the start of December as the Raptors hope to avoid a two-game skid following Sunday?s 112-107 overtime setback at Detroit.

After picking up impressive home wins over Boston and Portland, the Raptors fell apart in overtime by getting outscored, 10-0 in the final two minutes by the Pistons. Kawhi Leonard sat out for Toronto, but Kyle Lowry picked up the slack by leading the Raptors with 35 points. Recent pickups Marc Gasol and Jeremy Lin combined to shoot 2-of-18 from the floor, while Lin finished with one point in 25 minutes. Toronto wrapped up February at 9-2, but closed the month at 1-7 ATS.

The Rockets grabbed their fifth consecutive victory since blowing a 19-point lead in a post All-Star break loss to the Lakers. James Harden led Houston with 42 points in Sunday?s 115-104 triumph at Boston to pull off the season sweep of the Celtics. Eric Gordon added 32 points, including hitting eight three-pointers to help the Rockets pick up their third consecutive road win against an Eastern Conference opponent.

In the first matchup between these squads at Toyota Center on January 25, the Rockets held off the Raptors as 3 ?-point underdogs, 121-119. Houston won in spite of getting outscored in each of the final three quarters as the Rockets jumped out to a 13-point advantage after 12 minutes. Chris Paul sat out for the Rockets, but Harden did his thing offensively by leading Houston with 35 points in spite of shooting 9-of-25 from the floor and converting only 2-of-13 three-point attempts.

Crash Landing

The Thunder (39-24 SU, 33-30 ATS) have not covered a game since the All-Star break, while riding an 0-7 ATS skid the last seven trips to the court. OKC rallied past Memphis on Sunday, 99-95, but failed to cash as hefty 10-point home favorites. The Thunder shot a miserable 35% from the field as the starting backcourt of Russell Westbrook and Dennis Schroder combined to miss 29 shots.

Oklahoma City played a third consecutive game without leading scorer Paul George, who continues to nurse a sore right shoulder. Since George has been sidelined, the Thunder has scored 104, 102, and 98 points, as OKC last posted less than 100 points with the All-Star forward in the lineup in a January 6 home loss to Washington. So obviously no George has affected this Thunder offense, who will be without the former Pacers? standout again on Tuesday at Minnesota.

The Timberwolves (29-34 SU, 32-31 ATS) return home following an 0-3 road swing at Atlanta, Indiana, and Washington. Minnesota?s defense was torched in all three losses, resulting in three OVERS, while falling to the Wizards on Sunday, 135-121 on a hefty 240 ? total. The Wolves couldn?t hit a trey to save themselves in D.C. as Minnesota converted only 4-of-27 shots from downtown.

Oddly enough, the Wolves are probably excited to see the Thunder as Minnesota has picked up a pair of road victories at Oklahoma City this season. Both wins came by two points each, including a 119-117 triumph on January 8 as Andrew Wiggins paced Minnesota with 40 points. The Thunder is making their first trip to Target Center this season as OKC has dropped three of the past four visits to Minneapolis.

Barking Dogs

Since falling apart in the second half of a 10-point setback at Oklahoma City on February 5, the Magic (30-35 SU, 35-29-1 ATS) have performed well in the underdog role. Orlando has won and covered in the last five opportunities when receiving points, including knocking off the likes of Milwaukee, Golden State, and Toronto in this stretch.

On the flip side, the Magic have lost their three games in the favorite role, falling to doormats like New York, Cleveland, and Chicago in this span since the All-Star break. Basically, Orlando has played up to its competition as a ?dog and down to its competition when laying points of late. Fortunately, the Magic is the hunter and not the hunted on Tuesday in Philadelphia.

The 76ers (40-23 SU, 30-33 ATS) have lost back-to-back games only twice in 2019, as Philadelphia is coming off a late meltdown in Saturday?s 120-117 setback to Golden State. Four different Sixers posted at least 20 points, including a triple-double by Ben Simmons, who scored 25 points, pulled down 15 rebounds, and dished out 11 assists. However, Philadelphia has suffered two straight home losses for just the second time this season, while falling to 24-9 at Wells Fargo Center.

The Magic have held their own with the 76ers this season by covering in a pair of matchups this season as an underdog. Philadelphia edged Orlando, 116-115 as 12 ?-point favorites in late October, while the Magic erased a 16-point fourth quarter deficit in Jimmy Butler?s Philadelphia debut in a 111-106 upset as six-point home underdogs in mid-November.

Wednesday?s 6-pack

Odds to win the MVC tournament in St Louis this weekend:

? Loyola 8-5

? Drake 4-1

? Southern Illinois 9-2

? Missouri State 11-2

? Bradley 8-1

? Northern Iowa 12-1

? Illinois State 16-1

? Indiana State 20-1

? Valparaiso, Evansville 50-1

Quote of the Day
?You can say what you want to about size, but when you?re the most dangerous person on the court, it doesn?t matter. Size was never a factor growing up. College, I faced the same criticism. In the NBA, same thing.?
Trae Young

Wednesday?s quiz
Where did Draymond Green play his college basketball?

Tuesday?s quiz
Tony Bennett went 69-33 as coach at Washington State before moving to Virginia.

Monday?s quiz
There was no World Series in 1994, because the baseball players were on strike.

******************************************************

Wednesday?s List of 13: Mid-week musings??

13) Last year, five NFL teams drafted a QB in the first round; four of those teams traded up to get their guy, which leads me to believe that there will be trading near the top of the draft again this year, especially if Arizona doesn?t draft Kyler Murray with the #1 pick.

If Arizona doesn?t take Murray, you have to think they?re trading the #1 pick, because there has to be SOMEONE out there who is enamored with Murray, and Arizona could net a couple extra picks to replenish other parts of their team.

12) Good move by Major League Baseball; looks like starting next year, rosters will increase to 26 players per team, while September rosters will be capped at 28, instead of 40, the way it is now. Now if they can just get the DH in both leagues as soon as possible.

11) Minnesota 73, Purdue 69? Carsen Edwards was 7-31 in this game, 3-15 on the arc- he had one assist. Purdue only took 68 shots; rest of the team was 17-37. Big win for Golden Gophers? NCAA hopes.

If you go 7-31, do you have to soak your arm after the game?

10) Kentucky 80, Ole Miss 76? Rebels lost four of their last five games.

9) Duke 71, Wake Forest 70? Blue Devils were favored by 26.5 points; this score will have seeding repercussions if Zion Williamson doesn?t come back.

8) Florida State 73, Virginia Tech 64 OT? Hokies tied game on 3-pointer with 0:13 left, but FSU won/covered in OT. Bad beat for Tech backers. Seminoles clinch a double-bye in ACC tourney.

7) Oklahoma 81, Kansas 68? Jayhawks lost six of their last eight road games, and for first time in over a decade, they won?t win/share Big X regular season title.

6) Auburn 66, Alabama 60? Tigers trailed this game by 13, rallied for a win, but they haven?t been playing very well.

5) Bronx pitching ace Luis Severino was scratched from his spring training start with shoulder issue, and may not be ready for Opening Day.

Twins? 3B Miguel Sano has undergone two debridement procedures on his lower right Achilles since injured the heel during a team celebration in winter league back in January. His foot is in a boot and Sano isn?t likely to play ball for the Twins until May.

4) Texas Rangers? OF Nomar Mazara is the son of a high-ranking official in the Dominican Navy. He played against the Dodgers Sunday; LA broadcaster Nomar Garciaparra said that both his dad and Mazara?s dad are named Ramon, and Nomar, obviously, is Ramon spelled backwards.

3) Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney took batting practice with the St Louis Cardinals over the weekend; in the clips I saw, he was making a lot of contact.

2) New England Patriots had to replace five assistant coaches from last year, after five of last year?s assistants moved on to other NFL jobs. Lot of turnover for a winning team, as Tom Brady continues to make people he works with wealthier.

1) Santa Anita racetrack in southern California suspended racing indefinitely after the 21st horse death there since the winter meet began December 26.

Wednesday's Tip Sheet

Game of the Night: Nuggets (-5 ?, 227) at Lakers ? 10:35 PM EST

LeBron James has led his teams to the NBA Finals in each of the past eight seasons, which is one of the most impressive individual streaks in American professional sports. However, his Lakers (30-34 SU, 26-36-2 ATS) may not even qualify for the playoffs in his first season with the Purple and Gold. The Lakers suffered their third consecutive loss on Monday as they fell to the rival Clippers, 113-105 as 3 ?-point favorites.

Since shocking the Celtics at the buzzer on February 7, Los Angeles owns a dreadful 2-7 SU/ATS mark, including five outright losses in the favorite role. The Lakers squandered an eight-point advantage after one quarter in Monday?s setback to the Clippers, while allowing 49% shooting from the floor. James led the Lakers with 27 points, while Rajon Rondo registered a triple-double with 24 points, 10 rebounds, and 12 assists as L.A. fell to 4-8 since James returned the lineup from his groin injury on January 31.

The Nuggets (42-21 SU, 34-29 ATS) rode a five-game winning streak in mid-February, but Denver has gone backwards of late by dropping three straight contests. After melting down in Saturday?s 120-112 home loss to an unrested New Orleans squad as 13 ?-point favorites, the Nuggets fell behind by 19 points to the Spurs following 12 minutes of play on Monday.

Denver rallied back in the fourth quarter, but were squeezed by San Antonio, 104-103. The Nuggets managed a cover as 1 ?-point underdogs, but Denver suffered its second losing streak of three games since the start of February in spite of 25 points from Jamal Murray. Denver attempted (and made) only four free throws, while cashing the UNDER for the sixth consecutive game.

The Lakers will be without second-leading scorer Kyle Kuzma on Wednesday, as the second-year forward sprained his right ankle in Monday?s defeat. The home team has captured each of the first two matchups this season, as the Nuggets crushed the Lakers in the previous meeting in Denver, 117-85 in late November. Denver limited Los Angeles to 5-of-35 shooting from three-point range, while James was 0-of-4 from downtown. However, the Nuggets have lost in their last four trips to Staples Center since 2017.

NoCal Sweep?

For all the problems the Celtics (39-26 SU, 33-32 ATS) have endured on and off the court this season, Boston finally was able to show the country that it isn?t dead yet. The Celtics crushed the Warriors in the opener of their four-game road trip on Tuesday, 128-95 to easily cash as 6 ?-point underdogs. Boston dropped 73 points on the two-time defending champions in the first half, as Gordon Hayward came off the bench to score 30 points in its first road win since the All-Star break.

The Celtics head from Oakland to Sacramento tonight to face the Kings (32-31 SU, 37-26 ATS) for the first time this season. Sacramento snapped a three-game skid on Monday as the Kings slipped past the awful Knicks, 115-108 as 11-point favorites. Although the Kings didn?t cover, they improved to 15-2 overall this season in the favorite role, but they are flipped to an underdog at Golden 1 Center.

Since the start of December, the Kings have covered in seven of 11 opportunities as a home ?dog, but have lost two of the past three home matchups with the Celtics. Boston has had its issues with no rest this season by compiling a 4-6 SU and 3-7 ATS record, including a 2-4 SU and 1-5 ATS mark on the road.

Beasts of the South-least

The Southeast division race is the closest one in basketball, although not one team owns a winning record. The Magic fell out of a three-way tie for first alongside the Hornets and Heat after losing at Philadelphia on Tuesday. Charlotte (29-34 SU, 30-32-1 ATS) has lost four consecutive home games, while Miami (29-34 SU, 33-30 ATS) is fresh off a pair of home victories to pull into the top spot of the Southeast.

Since winning five straight home games from mid-January through the start of February, the Hornets own a 1-5 record the last five contests at Spectrum Center. Four of the losses came to the Clippers, Warriors, Rockets, and Blazers, as the latest setback came in Saturday?s 118-108 defeat to Portland. Charlotte has allowed 117 points or more in four straight home contests, while the OVER has cashed in six of its past seven games overall.

The Heat finally figured out the Hawks in Monday?s 114-113 home triumph to beat Atlanta for the first time in four tries this season. However, Miami failed to cash as 10-point favorites to end a three-game ATS hot streak. The Heat have dropped five of their past six road games since February 8, while losing the first two meetings with the Hornets back in October after sweeping the four-game series last season.

Back to the Big Easy

Things aren?t going on script for the Pelicans (30-36 SU, 33-32-1 ATS), who were supposed to fall apart after Anthony Davis demanded a trade out of New Orleans. Things have gone well for the Pelicans lately, who have covered five of six games, while capturing the final three games on their road trip, including outright underdog victories at Denver and Utah.

New Orleans erased a nine-point halftime deficit on Monday to shock Utah, 115-112 to cash as 9 ?-point road ?dogs, led by 30-point efforts from Jrue Holiday and Julius Randle. Davis played only 22 minutes and scored 15 points, but the Pelicans picked up three consecutive wins for only the second time since Thanksgiving.

Now, the two teams flip venues and head to Smoothie King Center as the Jazz (36-27 SU, 32-29-2 ATS) try to bounce back after having their four-game winning streak snapped. Utah?s offense continues to score points, as they eclipsed the 111-point mark for the sixth consecutive game in Monday?s setback. However, Utah fell to 1-3 ATS the last four games since putting together a 5-0 ATS run earlier in February.

The Jazz have seen plenty of success in their former home of New Orleans by winning in five straight visits since 2016, including a 132-111 blowout in late October as six-point favorites. However, Davis didn?t suit up in that contest, as the Jazz shot 52% from the floor led by Ricky Rubio?s 28 points as the OVER is 5-0 in the past five matchups in the Big Easy.

The Philadelphia 76ers are road favorites on Wednesday night, as they visit the Chicago Bulls in a game that can be seen on ESPN. The 76ers are battling for third place in the Eastern Conference with Indiana, while the Bulls are out of playoff contention.

Even though Chicago is not going to make the playoffs they have been playing pretty well. Both teams will be playing with no rest on Wednesday, as the 76ers were home against Orlando on Tuesday, while the Bulls were at Indiana. Let?s look at Wednesday?s game on ESPN and NBA picks.

Philadelphia 76ers at Chicago Bulls
Date and Time: Wednesday, March 6, 2019, 8:00 p.m. ET
Location: United Center, Chicago, IL
NBA Odds: 76ers -5, O/U 227
76ers vs. Bulls TV Coverage: ESPN

The 76ers played pretty well last week without Joel Embiid and they will not have him for this game on Wednesday night. Embiid missed Tuesday?s game against Orlando, but he did practice on Monday. Head coach Brett Brown didn?t give an indication on whether Embiid would play, but Embiid said on Saturday that he expects to return this week. Embiid leads the 76ers at 27.3 points per game, so his presence is critical. The most likely scenario is that the 76ers hold Embiid out until Friday?s game against Houston, but noting is set in stone.

One player who has stepped up with Embiid out of the lineup is Ben Simmons. He was names Eastern Conference Player of the Week. In the last five games, Simmons is averaging 20 points, 10.8 rebounds and 7.6 assists. He had back-to-back triple-doubles against the Pelicans and Warriors.

Philadelphia is 13-17 ATS on the road, with 15 games going over and 15 going under. They are averaging about 115 points per game and giving up about 112 per contest.

The Bulls have not been a good home team this season, as they are just 12-20 ATS, with 13 games going over, 18 going under, with one push. They are averaging 105 points per game and giving up just over 112 per contest.

Chicago has actually played pretty well of late, as they had won six of their last ten before Tuesday?s game at Indiana. The Bulls have been much better with Otto Porter Jr. in the lineup. They were 6-2 in the first eight games he played. Keep in mind that before the All-Star break the Bulls had the worst offensive rating in the league. Since getting Porter they have been greatly improved.

Chicago is not going to make the playoffs, but they will have an impact, as 11 of their last 17 games are against teams either in the playoffs or contending for the playoffs.

Key Stats

The 76ers are 1-5 ATS in the last 6 meetings in Chicago. The 76ers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 vs. the Central. The Bulls are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 vs. the Atlantic. The Bulls are 7-19 ATS in their last 26 home games. The Over is 11-2 in the 76ers last 13 games playing with no rest. The Over is 4-0 in the Bulls last 4 vs. the Atlantic. The Over is 5-2 in the Bulls last 7 home games. The Over is 7-0 in the last 7 meetings in Chicago.

NBA Game Preview - Denver Nuggets at Los Angeles Lakers
Kyle Markus

The Los Angeles Lakers? playoff chances are slip-sliding away. Everyone expected this team to turn it on after the All-Star Break, but the struggles have continued even with a healthy LeBron James leading the way. Los Angeles will need to be nearly perfect down the stretch to have a shot at the postseason, which will begin with a must-win game at home next time out against the Denver Nuggets.

Denver has been much better than expected this season and currently sits as the No. 2 seed in the West. The Nuggets may not have the same star power as Los Angeles but it has consistently been the better team this season.

This could be a competitive showdown as Denver is the superior team while the Lakers have the home court advantage in NBA betting lines.

This NBA basketball game between the Denver Nuggets at Los Angeles Lakers will be held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California at 8:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday, March 6th, 2019. The game will be nationally televised on ESPN.

Odds Analysis

The Nuggets are 42-21 on the season. They have lost three in a row, and while catching the Warriors won?t be easy, Denver is in good shape to finish with the second-best record in the conference.

The Lakers are 30-34 on the season. They have now dropped three straight games and seven of their past 10 to sink out of playoff contention. Los Angeles is 18-14 at home this year and badly needs to break out of its funk and capture the win.

Injury Report

Brandon Ingram -- The Lakers forward missed Monday?s game against the Clippers with a shoulder injury. The 21-year-old plays a big role for this Los Angeles team so any time away is costly, especially as the Lakers try to make an unlikely push for the playoffs.

Ingram is coming off a really strong performance in February where he averaged 21.3 points and 5.8 rebounds. The severity of the injury is not yet known, but keep an eye on his availability for this one. James remains one of the most dominant players in the NBA but the supporting cast is lacking, especially with Lonzo Ball and now Ingram battling injuries. Kyle Kuzma left the team?s game on Monday with an ankle injury, so his status is also one to watch.

Key Stat

3. That?s the number of games the Nuggets are ahead of the Thunder and Blazers in the Western Conference standings. Few expected this team to be in contention in the West this year but Denver has completely surpassed expectations.

Denver doesn?t have the players with the same cachet as some of the others near the top of the heap, and in a star-driven league, it will be interesting to see how this team performs in the postseason. For now, everything is going well, and the Nuggets would like to pick up this key road win to hold off some of the other West powers aiming to track them down in the standings.

Forcing perimeter shots

The Heat have been one of the best teams at defending opposing centers allowing only 19.8 points, 14.1 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game. The Heat also rank third in the Association in opponent points in the paint, surrendering only 42.8 a game, and are coming off a three-game stretch allowing only 38.

That could mean trouble for the Hornets? center Cody Zeller in tonight?s matchup. Look for him to be held in check and take Under his points, rebounds, assists total of 21.5.

Lighting up the scoreboard

The Mavericks have lost eight of their last 10 games, and head out on the road to Washington to take on a Wizards team who have also been struggling, losing seven of their most recent 10. The Mavs have owned the head-to-head meetings, winning nine of the most recent 10 matchups, and five straight on the road.

The Wizards are tied for third in points per game at home averaging 118.2 and give up almost as many defensively with the Wizards ranking 29th in opponent points per game. Look for a high scoring shootout today and take the game total Over 233.5.

Clipping wings

After last night?s big win versus the Thunder, the Timberwolves travel to Detroit to take on a Pistons team who are winners of eight of their last 10.

The Pistons have allowed the lowest points per game to opposing small forwards allowing 17.6 points on 43 percent shooting. Although Minnesota?s Andrew Wiggins is averaging right around that number in the regular season, his field goal percentage is way down from his career numbers, and almost four percent lower than last year. Back Under his point total today of 17.5.

Getting a much-needed road ?W?

The Spurs have struggled on the road this season and have lost six of the most recent eight away from home. Today, they take on a Hawks team who own a 3-20 record over their most recent 23 versus the Spurs.

The Hawks will once again be short handed with Omari Spellman and Miles Plumlee out, and Dewayne Dedmon listed as doubtful. Look for San Antonio to take care of business and improve on their playoff positioning today as only three wins separate eighth from third in the Western Conference. Back San Antonio to cover as 6-point road favorites.

Bouncing back in a big way

Utah get a quick opportunity at redemption against the Pelicans after losing at home Monday night 115-112. Utah have won eight of the last 10 versus New Orleans and five straight road contests.

Last time these two teams met, the Jazz gave up 62 points in the paint, which is very uncharacteristic as they only surrender an average of 47.2. Look for the Jazz to guard the painted area better this time around, and force tough perimeter shots, as the Pelicans are not a good team from beyond the arc. Take Utah to cover the spread as 4-point road favorites.

Thursday?s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud??

13) Back in December, when I was flying home to Albany from Las Vegas, with a stop in Baltimore, one of the other passengers on my flight from Vegas to Baltimore was Eric Weddle?s dad. How do I know this? The guy had a purple Ravens? t-shirt on, with ?Weddle 32? on the back, and he talked proudly and for a long time about his son to the people sitting near him in the terminal.

It was pretty cool to hear a father talk so glowingly about his son; the Ravens released Eric Weddle this week. Hard to believe another NFL team won?t scoop him up when free agency starts next week.

12) West Virginia 90, Iowa State 75? Watching this game it dawned on me that lot of players are looking tired the last couple weeks. Long season, thin benches, conference tournaments are next week and these are the dog days. Cyclones got crushed here; it was 54-33 at halftime.

11) Seton Hall 73, Marquette 64? Marquette led by 13 with 9:45 left, but Myles Powell went off and the Pirates get a big win, ending game on an 18-0 run. Powell scored 34 for Seton Hall.

10) LSU 79, Florida 78, OT? These teams went OT in both meetings this year, splitting the pair; this was LSU?s 7th OT game this season. Florida had the ball for the last shot in OT, but never even got a shot off.

9) DePaul 101, Georgetown 69? This game was 42-15 at one point; when was last time DePaul led anyone by 27 in the first half? Georgetown played like a team that will be hosting an NIT game in a couple weeks.

8) Basketball budgets in the SEC:
1. Kentucky $18.6M
2. Ole Miss $12.55M
3. Auburn $11.2M
4. Texas A&M $10.4M
5. Alabama $10.3M
6. South Carolina $10M
7. Vanderbilt $9.7M
8. Arkansas $9.2M
9. Florida $9.0M
10. LSU $8.6M
11. Georgia $8.5M
12. Tennessee $8.4M
13. Missouri $8.4M
14. Mississippi State $6.8M

7) Fresno State 76, San Diego State 74? Aztecs choked this game away; they led by 7 with about a minute to play, but turned the ball over a few times and lost for 7th time in last nine meetings with Fresno.

6) Looking thru each baseball team?s top 30 minor league prospects, Miami/Seattle both have 12 prospects acquired by trade, most of any team in majors.

5) New Jersey?s Division of Gaming Enforcement says no to major league baseball?s request to not allow wagering on spring training games. Not sure why anyone would want to, but Garden State bettors can wager on Cactus and Grapefruit League games.

4) Major League Baseball is mandating that managers send their lineup cards into the Commissioner?s Office before releasing them in the clubhouse to reporters, players before games. Baseball wants to ensure that information passed around the clubhouse and the stadium doesn?t provide an edge to gamblers.

They?re pretending that they have no idea that gambling has been going on for a long time.

3) Boston Red Sox pitcher Steven Wright tested positive for Growth Hormone Releasing Peptide 2 (GHRP-2), a PED, is suspended for 80 games. Why would a knuckleballer do this?

2) According to info from the New York Gaming Commission, Rivers Casino in Schenectady generated almost double the slot machine revenue than the brand new Resorts World Catskills in Monticello.

1) Best wishes to Alex Trebek, who announced Wednesday that he has pancreatic cancer. Hope to see him hosting Jeopardy! for many more years. Get well soon, sir.
