Kapanen's scores twice, leads Leafs past Red Wings 5-4 in OT

TORONTO (AP) Kasperi Kapanen scored his second goal of the game at 1:53 of overtime and the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Detroit Red Wings 5-4 on Sunday night.

Kapanen's winner squeezed through the pads of former Leafs goalie Jonathan Bernier and just got over the goal line.

Morgan Rielly and John Tavares each had a goal and an assist, and Frederik Gauthier also for Toronto, which extended its winning streak to four games. Garret Sparks made 26 saves for the Leafs.

Frans Nielsen, Filip Hronek, Michael Rasmussen and Christoffer Ehn scored for Detroit. Bernier stopped 19 shots.

Tavares tied it 4-4 with 7.6 seconds left in regulation when he tipped a shot from the point by Jake Gardiner for his 24th of the season with Sparks on the bench for the extra attacker. Tavares nearly won it a minute into overtime, but he shot high over the net from close range.

KINGS 4, GOLDEN KNIGHTS 3, OT

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Tyler Toffoli scored 1:40 into overtime to lift Los Angeles past Vegas.

After Los Angeles goalie Calvin Petersen made a series of spectacular saves to start overtime, Toffoli caught the Golden Knights on a shift change and beat Marc-Andre Fleury on a breakaway with a wrist shot.

Michael Amadio, Alex Iafallo and Jeff Carter also scored for the Kings, and Petersen stopped 22 shots.

Tomas Nosek, Reilly Smith and Ryan Reaves scored for Vegas. Fleury, who started Saturday against Montreal, made 28 saves. Fleury faced 79 shots in the two games.

HURRICANES 5, BRUINS 3

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Sebastian Aho and Teuvo Teravainen each had two goals and two assists, and Carolina beat Boston while wearing Hartford Whalers uniforms for the first time since moving 21 years ago.

Aho had his fourth career four-point night - and his second in five games - while it was the third for Teravainen. The Hurricanes scored four straight goals - three in the second period - to erase an early 2-0 deficit and snap a two-game losing streak that had left them two points out of last place.

Justin Faulk also scored for Carolina, which scored two short-handed goals for the first time since 2013.

Ryan Donato had two goals, Steven Kampfer also scored and Brad Marchand had two assists for the Bruins, who had won three straight and six of eight.

Tuukka Rask made 32 saves for Boston, and Petr Mrazek stopped 27 shots for the Hurricanes

COYOTES 4, SHARKS 3, SO

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Alex Galchenyuk ended a slump by scoring twice and had the only goal in the shootout to lift Arizona over San Jose.

Tomas Hertl scored twice in the third period for San Jose, which lost its third straight after winning a season-high five in a row.

Galchenyuk hadn't scored in his previous 16 games. Tim Heed scored his first goal of the season in his third game for San Jose.

Coyotes goalie Darcy Kuemper had 35 saves. Aaron Dell stopped 23 shots for San Jose.

ISLANDERS 3, STARS 1

DALLAS (AP) - Anders Lee scored a tiebreaking power-play goal with 10:10 to play and New York beat Dallas.

The Islanders' first two goals went in off Dallas goalie Anton Khudobin. On the winner, Nick Leddy's shot from the top of the slot hit the left post and went off Khudobin's right skate before Lee poked the puck between the goalie's legs.

Tyler Pitlick scored the game's first goal for the Stars in the second period before Casey Cizikas tied it with a fluke goal at 14:10. Leo Komarov added an empty-net goal with a minute remaining. Khudobin finished with 25 saves.

Islanders goalie Robin Lehner made 19 saves, six in the third period against a listless Dallas offense on the second night of a back-to-back.

PANTHERS 6, BLACKHAWKS 3

CHICAGO (AP) - Jayce Hawryluk scored his first two NHL goals, Mike Hoffman and Jared McCann had goals in a 31-second span in the second period and Florida beat Chicago.

Denis Malgin also scored and Frank Vatrano added an empty-netter as the Panthers won road games on consecutive night and prevailed for the fourth time in five games overall.

Dylan Strome had a goal and two assists for the last-place Blackhawks, who had their season-high, three-game winning streak snapped. Connor Murphy scored his first goal of the season and Alex DeBrincat netted his 17th.

James Reimer made 26 saves for Florida and Cam Ward stopped 21 shots for Chicago, as No. 1 goalie Corey Crawford missed his fourth game with a concussion.

BLUE JACKETS 3, DEVILS 0

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Sergei Bobrovsky made 39 saves, Artemi Panarin had a goal and an assist, and Columbus beat New Jersey for its fourth consecutive victory.

Cam Atkinson and Oliver Bjorkstrand added first-period goals for the Blue Jackets, who trail first-place Washington by two points in the Metropolitan Division going into the league's holiday break.

The shutout was Bobrovsky's second of the season and 26th of his career.

FLYERS 3, RANGERS 2, SO

NEW YORK (AP) - Nolan Patrick scored the lone goal in a shootout that lasted four rounds and Philadelphia beat scuffling New York.

Michael Raffl and Wayne Simmonds scored in regulation, and Michael Neuvirth made 32 saves as the Flyers won for the third time since changing coaches.

Chris Kreider and Boo Nieves scored for the Rangers, who lost their fifth in six games. Henrik Lundqvist stopped 28 shots.

Sharks' Karlsson suspended 2 games

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) San Jose Sharks defenseman Erik Karlsson was suspended two games without pay by the NHL on Sunday for an illegal check to the head of Los Angeles Kings forward Austin Wagner.

The incident occurred early in the second period of the Kings' 3-2 overtime win over the Sharks on Saturday. Wagner left the game after getting taken down by Karlsson on a hard hit near center ice. After getting back on his feet, Wagner's legs came out from under him. No penalty was called.

''I'm not going to lie. I was very surprised,'' Karlsson said.

''I think it's a clean hit. I hope he's OK. It's unfortunate that he didn't finish the game. I can't really go into specific details because I don't want to risk anything more, since I have no say in the matter. But at the end of the day, hopefully he's fine. You never want to see anyone get hurt, and I wish him all the best. I have a clear conscience for my part. I think I did everything within the rules, but unfortunately some people didn't think I did.''

Karlsson, who has points in eight consecutive games, has two goals and 24 assists this season for San Jose.

''Disappointed,'' Sharks coach Pete DeBoer said. ''From every report I have, my understanding is the injury is to the shoulder. I think that speaks to it, in my mind. But I might be oversimplifying. I'm not going to say any more on that because you just get yourself in trouble.''

Karlsson, who joined the Sharks in an offseason trade with Ottawa, started serving the suspension Sunday against Arizona and will also miss Thursday's game against the Ducks. He is eligible to return Saturday in Edmonton.

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Mid-week musings??.

13) Spent a while in Harrah?s sportsbook Monday night; they?ve improved it some. While I?m there, ESPN is playing Scott Van Pelt?s ?Bad Beats? segment on weird losses in gambling- the 10 or 12 people in the book loved the segment. Was fun to watch it there.

12) Walking on the Strip for a half hour or so on Christmas Eve was fun; cars totally covered in Christmas lights on the strip, people throwing candy out of the back of a pickup truck to kids on the sidewalk. Lot of people walking, most of whom did not speak English, almost all of whom were taking pictures with their phones. Interesting experience.

11) Case Keenum?s NFL career:
? 2012-14 Texans? Went 2-8 in ten starts, all in 2o13-14. Went to the Rams during 2014 season, traded for a 7th round draft pick.
? 2014-16 Rams? 7-7 in 16 games (14 starts): those weren?t good Ram clubs and Jeff Fisher was the coach? he didn?t hire the best offensive assistants. 7-7 in those games wasn?t too shabby.
? 2017? Vikings? 11-3 in 14 starts, then split two playoff games, including the GW pass to Diggs that might be the greatest moment in Vikings? history.
? 2018? Broncos? 6-9 this year, and the ship is sinking. Looks like coach Joseph will be told to take a hike. Will Keenum follow him out of town? He could be playing for his 4th team in four years next season.

10) ESPN?s Monday night analysts, Jason Witten/Booger McFarland, have been more critical the last couple weeks- they were KILLING the Broncos Monday night, and were circling players for lack of effort late in that game.

I?m not criticizing them for doing this; think it would be nice if more analysts simply told the truth, but it is unusual to hear.

9) Notre Dame QB Brandon Wimbush is transferring; he started 12 games LY, four games this year? his W-L record as a college starter is 12-3. He has one year of eligibility left.

How come every former starter/backup QB in the country transfers, but not Jalen Hurts??? LOL

Swearinger has played for four teams in his six-year NFL career; this is his second tour of duty with Arizona. If he wants to keep playing in the NFL, maybe he should try shutting his mouth for a while, whether he is right or wrong about what he says.

3) Understood that the NBA doesn?t give a rat?s ass what a 59-year old Caucasian thinks, but the uniforms Knicks-Bucks wore Christmas Day were ugly, really ugly.

2) Liev Schrieber?s character Ray Donovan almost got thru a whole hour of his Showtime series this week without getting beat up. Almost.

Ray Donovan is a really well-done show; they have Susan Sarandon/Jon Voight as supporting actors, and added Alan Alda this week a a psychiatrist. Quite a cast, but Ray has taken a severe physical beating this year. It isn?t always the most uplifting, optimistic show.

1) Here at the Vdara Hotel, a terrific place to stay, it turns out that if you decline maid service 2-3 days in a row, they send someone to your room, to make sure you?re not dead. Seriously.

Lady knocked on my door Tuesday morning, called it ?a wellness check?; I?m just fine, ma?am, you have a nice Christmas, too.

Blackwood picks up first NHL win, Devils beat Bruins 5-2

BOSTON (AP) Mackenzie Blackwood stopped 40 shots for his first NHL victory, Blake Coleman scored twice and the New Jersey Devils beat the Boston Bruins 5-2 on Thursday night.

Damon Severson scored 25 seconds into the game and Kyle Palmieri added his team-high 19th goal for the Devils, who won on the road for just the fourth time this season.

Nico Hirschier had a goal and an assist and Andy Greene had a pair of assists as New Jersey got its first win in Boston in five years.

Patrice Bergeron and Chris Wagner scored for Boston, and Jaroslav Halak had 28 saves.

Severson's early goal on a wrist shot from the right circle gave the rookie Blackwood a lead the Devils never relinquished.

Blackwood, who was making his second career start, stopped 18 of 19 shots in the second period to help stave off the Bruins.

CAPITALS 3, HURRICANES 1

WASHINGTON (AP) - T.J. Oshie scored his 11th goal and John Carlson had an empty-netter as Washington won its third straight game.

Chandler Stephenson added his second goal in three games for the Capitals, winners of 15 of their last 18 games.

Braden Holtby stopped 28 shots for the Metropolitan Division leaders. The Capitals killed all four Hurricanes penalties, including a high-sticking minor on Michal Kempny with 3:46 remaining.

Sebastian Aho scored his team-leading 15th goal in the third period for the Hurricanes, who lost their third out of four games. Petr Mrazek stopped 30 shots.

PENGUINS 5, RED WINGS 2

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Phil Kessel scored two power-play goals and Derick Brassard added two scores as Pittsburgh ran its winning streak to four games.

Patric Hornqvist scored his 13th of the season. Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin each finished with two assists. Crosby has registered points in nine of his last 11 home games and has 24 points in his last 18 games. Matt Murray stopped 27 shots for his fourth straight win since returning from a lower-body injury.

Dylan Larkin extended his career-long, 12-game point streak with his 16th goal of the season for Detroit. Andreas Athanasiou returned from a two-game absence due to an upper-body injury and scored his 12th of the season. Jimmy Howard made 35 saves.

BLUE JACKETS 4, RANGERS 3 OT

NEW YORK (AP) - Pierre-Luc Dubois scored 31 seconds into overtime and Columbus won its fifth straight victory.

Dubois' 14th goal came after Columbus tied the game with less than three minutes left in regulation. Blue Jackets backup goaltender Joonas Korpisalo made 19 saves for the win.

Oliver Bjorkstrand, David Savard and Zach Werenski also scored for the Blue Jackets.

Chris Kreider scored twice and Jimmy Vesey added a goal for New York. Henrik Lundqvist made 25 saves.

BLACKHAWKS 5, WILD 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Patrick Kane had a hat trick, Brandon Saad scored twice and Chicago picked up its fourth win in five games.

Collin Delia made 46 saves, and Jonathan Toews, Erik Gustafsson and Dylan Strome each had two assists for Chicago, tied for last place with St. Louis in the Central Division.

Kane completed his first hat trick since March 2017. He leads the Blackhawks with 20 goals and 47 points and has five goals and five assists during a six-game point streak.

Zach Parise and Eric Staal scored for the Wild, who dropped their season-worst fifth straight (0-4-1).

CANUCKS 4, OILERS 2

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - Elias Pettersson and Antoine Roussel each had a goal and an assist for Vancouver.

The Canucks scored four goals on their first six shots. Tyler Motte and Brock Boeser also scored for Vancouver, which is 7-2-1 in its last 10 games.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Leon Draisaitl scored for the Oilers, who have lost four straight.

Oilers goalie Mikko Koskinen gave up all four goals and made just two saves before being replaced by Cam Talbot, who stopped all 14 shots he faced.

Jacob Markstrom made 30 saves in the win for the Canucks.

LIGHTNING 6, FLYERS 5 OT

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Alex Killorn scored 18 seconds into overtime and Tampa Bay, after blowing a three-goal lead in the third period, extended its point streak to 13 games.

Steven Stamkos had two goals and two assists, and Nikita Kucherov added a goal and three assists for the Lightning, who are 12-0-1 during their current run.

Brayden Point and Tyler Johnson had the other Tampa Bay goals, and Andrei Vasilevskiy made 28 saves.

Dale Weise, Robert Hagg, Ivan Provorov, Michael Raffl and Claude Giroux scored for the Flyers. Michal Neuvirth stopped 31 shots.

BLUES 4, SABRES 1

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Robert Thomas had a goal and an assist and Jake Allen made 30 saves to lead St. Louis past Buffalo.

Jay Bouwmeester, Pat Maroon and Ryan O'Reilly scored for the Blues.

Jack Eichel scored his 15th goal of the season in the second period for the Sabres. Carter Hutton stopped 28 of 32 shots in his first appearance against St. Louis after spending the previous two seasons with the Blues.

STARS 2, PREDATORS 0

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Anton Khudobin made a career-high 49 saves to lead Dallas over slumping Nashville.

Tyler Pitlick and Mattias Janmark scored for Dallas, which has won two of three.

Pekka Rinne stopped 28 shots for the Predators, who have lost five straight.

Khudobin posted his first shutout of the season and seventh of his career.

FLAMES 4, JETS 1

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Johnny Gaudreau had a hat trick as Calgary ended a three-game winless streak.

Mark Jankowski had a short-handed, third-period goal for Calgary. Sean Monahan contributed three assists and Elias Lindholm added a pair.

Adam Lowry scored for the Jets, who had won their previous two games and had a four-game win streak at home halted.

David Rittich made 35 saves for Calgary, and Connor Hellebuyck stopped 24 shots for Winnipeg.

GOLDEN KNIGHTS 2, AVALANCHE 1

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Brandon Pirri scored his fourth goal of the season midway through the third period to send Vegas past Colorado.

Pirri, recalled from the AHL's Chicago Wolves earlier in the day, blistered a shot from the point past goaltender Philipp Grubauer with 9:49 left.

Vegas staved off back-to-back power plays for Colorado in the final six minutes.

Paul Stastny celebrated his 33rd birthday with a goal for Vegas, and Marc-Andre Fleury made 31 saves to improve to 21-10-4. He earned his 50th win overall with the Golden Knights.

J.T. Compher scored for the Avalanche, and Grubauer (8-4-3) made 41 saves.

SHARKS 4, DUCKS 2

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Brent Burns scored midway through the third period of his 1,000th career game and led San Jose to a victory over Anaheim.

Burns scored his fifth goal at 10:21 of the third period to break a 2-2 tie, and the Sharks snapped a three-game losing streak. The 33-year-old Burns was playing in his 428th consecutive regular-season game. The 2017 Norris Trophy winner as the league's top defenseman hasn't missed a game since November 2013.

Marcus Sorensen, Melker Karlsson and Tomas Hertl also scored for San Jose. Barclay Goodrow had two assists and Martin Jones had 26 saves.

Jakob Silfverberg and Kiefer Sherwood scored for Anaheim, which lost its fourth straight game after winning four in a row and nine of 10.

KINGS 2, COYOTES 1

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Dustin Brown scored the go-ahead goal early in the third period for Los Angeles.

Jake Muzzin also scored for the last-place Kings, who have won a season-high four consecutive games. Jonathan Quick made 26 saves.

Jakob Chychrun had a power-play goal and Darcy Kuemper stopped 24 shots for the Coyotes, who won their previous two.

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) Tomas Tatar scored twice, including the go-ahead goal in the third period, and the Montreal Canadiens beat the Florida Panthers 5-3 on Friday night.

Jonathan Drouin had a goal and an assist, and Nicolas Deslauriers and Artturi Lehkonen also scored for the Canadiens, who won their third straight.

Henrik Borgstrom, Denis Malgin and Keith Yandle scored for the Panthers, who ended a two-game winning streak.

Montreal's Antti Niemi, in for injured Carey Price, and Florida's Roberto Luongo each stopped 23 shots.

Montreal scored twice in the first three minutes.

ISLANDERS 6, SENATORS 3

NEW YORK (AP) - Mathew Barzal had two goals and an assist to help New York rally for a win over Ottawa.

Josh Bailey had a goal and an assist, and Anders Lee, Johnny Boychuk and Casey Cizikas also scored for New York, which came back from a pair of two-goal deficits to win for the fifth time in six games.

Thomas Greiss gave up three goals on 17 shots before he was pulled 6:11 into the second period. Robin Lehner, who began his career with Ottawa, came on and stopped all 10 shots he faced to improve to 7-0-3 against his former team.

Mark Stone, Matt Duchene and Cody Ceci scored for Ottawa, which has lost six of eight (2-5-1). Mike McKenna finished with 33 saves as the Senators fell to 4-13-1 on the road.

MAPLE LEAFS 4, BLUE JACKETS 2

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - John Tavares scored two goals, Garret Sparks had 27 saves and Toronto beat Columbus.

Mitch Marner had a goal and assisted on both Tavares' tallies, and Frederik Gauthier also scored to power the Maple Leafs to their fifth straight win, matching the longest streak of the season.

Nick Foligno and Artemi Panarin scored for Columbus, and Sergei Bobrovsky had 25 saves. The Blue Jackets, playing on the second night of a back-to-back, saw their five-game winning streak snapped as they try to stay close to Washington at the top of the Metropolitan Division.
