13) How about this idea for the NCAA basketball tournament?

Committee picks the 68 teams, sets the two playoff games, and seeds the top 32 teams, but then there is a nationally-televised draft, where teams can choose who they play in the first round, essentially filing out half the first-round matchups in real time on national TV.

12) It would work this way; the play-in games are set by the committee so those eight teams can get started on preparation, but say Kansas is the #1 national seed- they can choose any of the four #16-seeds to play in the first round.

The #2 and #3 seeds would then choose which 16-seed they wanted to play, the #4 seed would get the last remaining #16 seed, then they move on to the #2-15 matchups. The #5-seed would have first choice of the #15 seeds to play, and so on??.

It would create some more drama and a little transparency- I think people would watch in on TV, for sure.

11) Duquesne +5.5 or +6 Wednesday night was one of worst beats in recent memory; with game tied and 0:05.4 left. Duquesne was called for a foul under the basket- Duquesne coach Keith Dambrot (Lebron James? high school coach) lost his mind at the call, was given two technical fouls and Penn State made all six foul shots.

Duquesne threw away the inbounds pass and that was that; weird thing about Dambrot going nuts was that Dukes were 29-32 on foul line for the game, Penn State 17-26, so not like he was getting the short end of the stick the whole game.

10) Patriots? WR Josh Gordon is stepping away from football to focus on his mental health; he had been averaging 65 receiving yards a game.

9) Houston Rockets made 26-55 3-pointers in their 136-118 win over the Wizards Wednesday, setting an NBA record for most made 3?s in a game; they only took 30 2-point shots (19-30). James Harden scored 35 points in 34:00 for Houston, which won its fifth straight game.

8) Carolina Panthers are shutting QB Cam Newton (shoulder) down for the last two games; Carolina lost its last six games, Taylor Heinicke is the Panthers? new QB; he?s thrown five NFL passes in mop-up duty in six games, five this year and one for Houston LY.

Heinicke played college ball at Old Dominion; this is his first NFL start.

Panthers have won six divisional titles in their 24-year history, but they?ve never had two winning seasons in a row.

7) There were 66 touchdowns scored in Week 15?s NFL games, nine less TD?s than in any other week this season.

In weeks 1-12 this season, NFL teams averaged 23.0 ppg.
In weeks 13-15 this year, NFL teams averaged 19.7 ppg.

6) New Jersey Giants? combined record the last five years: 31-48, 0-1 in playoff games; they seem intent on moving forward with QB Eli Manning, who turns 38 on January 3rd.

Manning helped the Giants win two Super Bowls, going on 4-0 playoff runs in both ?07 and ?11, but 2011 was seven years ago; he has a career playoff record of 8-4.

Giants have had three head coaches the last four years, but never changed QB?s; interesting decision they have here; if I was them, I?d move on to a younger QB, but thats me? this will be interesting to follow next summer/fall.

5) Favorites won the first seven bowl games this month, going 6-1 vs spread.

4) Dallas Cowboys have scored TD?s only 47.6% of time when they had 1st-and-goal this year, the only NFL team with a %age under 50%.

Giants (52.4%), 49ers (54.5%) have next worst marks. Carolina (88.5%), Denver (86.4%) have the best TD percentage on 1st-and-goal series.

3) Newly-signed Mets? catcher, the oft-injured Wilson Ramos gets a $500,000 bonus next season if he catches 100+ games. He?s caught 100+ games in three of nine MLB seasons.

Locked and Loaded Leafs highlight this weekend's NHL betting predictions and picks

It could be a big weekend for the Toronto Maple Leafs ? and for Over bettors, as well. The Leafs square off against a pair of bottom-10 defenses to highlight an entertaining stretch that includes the Chicago Blackhawks looking to reverse an ugly road trend, and two struggling defenses tangling in what should be a high-scoring affair at Madison Square Garden. Here are the key matchups, trends and tips to monitor heading into a busy weekend on the ice.

Leafs Locked and Loaded

The Toronto Maple Leafs' goal-scoring train is chugging at full strength again ? and their next two games present great opportunities for even more offensive fireworks. Fresh off a 6-1 win over the Florida Panthers in their return from a five-game road trip, Toronto carries a 9-2 O/U record over its last 11 games into a pair of encounters Saturday against the New York Rangers and Sunday vs. the Detroit Red Wings. Both teams rank in the bottom-10 in the league in goals against per game and could struggle to contain a Toronto offense that has produced 13 goals over its previous two games.

Sending Fans Home Happy

Saturday afternoon presents a rare marquee matchup between the Nashville Predators and the Boston Bruins ? and if the all-time head-to-head record is any indication, fans at TD Garden will be doing some celebrating. The teams have split their previous 18 meetings down the middle, with the home team going an absurd 15-3 SU over that stretch. The home side has won each of the past six encounters, most recently a 1-0 Nashville victory the last time these teams met back on Nov. 4 at Bridgestone Arena. Also, worth noting: six of the previous 10 head-to-head meetings have been decided by a goal.

Blackhawks Don't Travel Well

The Chicago Blackhawks are trying to turn around a dismal season ? and they're on the right track as they prep for a Friday night matchup with the host Colorado Avalanche. Chicago's 5-2 drubbing of the host Dallas Stars on Thursday marked just the 10th win for the Blackhawks in their last 37 road games against teams with winning home records. But the odds of a repeat performance are not in Chicago's favor; it has lost 20 of its past 27 games on the tail end of a back-to-back, while the home team has won five of the previous six meetings between the Central Division rivals.

Red Light Bonanza?

The Rangers-Flyers rivalry has seen better times ? but fans and bettors could be in for plenty of offense as the Metropolitan Division foes renew hostilities Sunday on Broadway. The teams entered Thursday ranked second and fourth, respectively, in most goals per game allowed so far in December, with the Flyers at 4.00 and the Rangers at 3.86. And while both teams are in the middle of the pack offensively for the month at 3.00 goals per game apiece, the winning team has scored four or more times in six of the previous seven meetings. The Flyers come in having won four straight against the Rangers.

Goalie Profile

Adin Hill, Arizona Coyotes: When the Coyotes lost netminder Antti Raanta to an injury that might keep him out for the remainder of the season, many thought their solid defensive prowess would take a hit. But the tandem of Darcy Kuemper and Hill have kept the Coyotes competitive in most games despite the team boasting the second-worst offense in the league. Hill has been one of the biggest surprises of the season so far. A third-round pick in 2015, the 22-year-old is 5-3-0 with a 1.97 goals-against average and a .927 save percentage, though he has hit a bit of a rough patch with three or more goals allowed in each of his past four starts.

Injury Update

Matt Dumba, Defenseman, Minnesota Wild: Things are getting dire in Minnesota, with the Wild having lost eight of 11 games heading into the weekend. And they'll be without the services of offensively gifted defenseman Matt Dumba, who is out indefinitely with what is being categorized as a "significant" upper-body injury. Dumba leads all blue-liners in goals with 12, and averages more than 23 minutes per game on the Minnesota blue line. The Wild are 10-6-2 SU in games in which Dumba records at least one point.

Hat Trick Trends

Games officiated by Ghislain Hebert have been a hot ticket so far this season. The over is 23-15 in the 38 games Hebert has worked in 2018-19, while producing an average of seven goals. Peter MacDougall is second among referees who have worked a minimum of 10 games, with his matchups generating an average of 6.77 goals en route to a 9-4 O/U mark.

The over bonanza has ended, at least temporarily. Unders have outperformed overs by an ever-so-slim 25-24 margin over the previous seven days entering Thursday, though overs are still converting at a 53.6-percent clip over the previous 30 days. Teams have made good on the over 50.4 percent of the time since the start of the season.

Underdog bettors have seen a bump in profit over the past week, with 'dogs and faves having each won 26 times over that span. But don't expect the good times to continue: Favorites have prevailed at a 63.6 percent rate over the previous month, and is at 57.8 percent for the campaign.

Wilson breaks tie in 3rd period Capitals beat Sabres 2-1

WASHINGTON (AP) Tom Wilson broke a tie with seven minutes left, Braden Holtby made 36 saves and the Washington Capitals beat the Buffalo Sabres 2-1 on Friday night.

Evgeny Kuznetsov started the winning play when he stole the puck from goalie Carter Hutton behind the net. The center quickly fed Wilson just outside of the crease. Wilson has 10 goals in 15 games this season.

Washington has won six of its last seven games and has beaten the Sabres twice at home in less than a week. Buffalo is 0-5-2 in its last seven games in Washington.

Washington opened the scoring in the second period on Chandler Stephenson's short-handed goal, and Johan Larsson tied it at 9:01 of the third.

BLACKHAWKS 2, AVALANCHE 1

DENVER (AP) - Collin Delia made 35 saves in his first NHL start of the season and Chicago beat Colorado for its third straight victory.

Recalled Monday from Rockford of the AHL after Corey Crawford sustained a concussion, the 24-year-old Delia made his third career start. In his previous start, he surrendered five goals late last season in a loss to the Avalanche.

Alex DeBrincat and Artem Anisimov scored for Chicago. J.T. Compher scored for Colorado, and Philipp Grubauer stopped 26 shots.

DEVILS 5, SENATORS 2

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Reigning MVP Taylor Hall had two goals and two assists and New Jersey rode its top line beat Ottawa and snap a three-game losing streak.

Kyle Palmieri added a goal and two assists, Nico Hischier had a goal and an assists and the line finished with nine points as the Devils won for only the fourth time in the last 17 games (4-7-6).

Pavel Zacha ignited the outburst with a short-handed goal and Keith Kinkaid made 25 saves.

Matt Duchene scored twice for Ottawa.

13) Dodgers traded Matt Kemp/Yasiel Puig and Alex Wood to the Reds, making it obvious they?re clearing roster/payroll space to go after free agent Bryce Harper.

Not sure what the Reds are thinking, unless they?re going to flip Puig to a contender.

12) Washington Nationals signed P Anibal Sanchez, Cardinals signed reliever Andrew Miller.

11) Pac-12 basketball teams are 5-27 vs spread as underdogs so far this season. That is a hard stat to believe, but I checked it twice. They don?t have any teams in KenPom?s top 40, which pretty much means the conference tournament winner might be the only Pac-12 team in the NCAA tournament in March.

10) A?s traded for 2B Jurickson Profar in a 3-way deal with Texas, Tampa Bay. Profar was one of five American Leaguers LY with at least 35 doubles, 20 home runs, 75 RBI and 10 stolen bases.

The team?s owner is notorious for being a volatile human who once threatened to kill the refs, so this could be interesting.

8) Couple years ago I spent this week at the Aria hotel, which is very nice but the pizza I had there was lame. Last night, I gave the same pizza place a second chance and it was very good. Not really sure why there was such a difference; they probably just had a bad day back then.

Will probably be there again Sunday watching NFL games, so more pizza is in the offing.

7) New Jersey Jets have thrown 58 passes this season that went 20+ yards downfield but completed only 17% of them, which isn?t good.

Bills/Packers have both thrown 78 such passes, most in the league, Buffalo completing 27% of them, Green Bay 35%. Giants have thrown 57 of them, completing 44%.

6) FIU 35, Toledo 32? First underdog to win a bowl game this season; this was the 9th bowl.

5) BYU 49, Western Michigan 18? Cougars were down 10-7 at halftime, then dominated the second half. Both teams finished the season 7-6. Favorites are 8-2 vs spread in bowls so far.

4) Rockets? PG Chris Paul has a hamstring issue, is expected to be out 2-3 weeks. Houston is 0-5 without Paul this season.

3) Six former G-League head coaches have become NBA head coaches; 40% of players on NBA rosters played at one time or another in the G-League. 74 other G-League coaches have moved up to the NBA as an assistant.

2) Buffalo Bulls of the MAC split a couple road games with Syracuse/Marquette this week, but more impressive than that is this: Buffalo was a small underdog in both games, getting 3.5 points at Syracuse, 2 points at Marquette- thats the oddsmaker telling us that Buffalo is at least as good as their more brand-name opponents.

Buffalo hammered Arizona in the NCAA?s last year; they?ll likely be a force this March, too.

1) Looks like the Oakland Raiders will play home games at AT&T Park in San Francisco next year, where the baseball Giants play. Raiders are moving to Las Vegas in 2020 and the city of Oakland is suing them, so the Coliseum is out for next year.

Danault records hat trick, Habs top Knights

LAS VEGAS (AP) Phillip Danault completed a hat trick late in the third period, Paul Byron scored in overtime and the Montreal Canadiens beat the Vegas Golden Knights 4-3 on Saturday.

Danault entered the game with two goals this season. His third score of the game came with 1:25 left in the third period, setting up Byron's backhand goal 1:59 into OT.

Carey Price made 23 saves, and the Canadiens swept the season series against Vegas.

Brandon Pirri scored twice and Jonathan Marchessault also scored for Vegas. William Karlsson, who leads Vegas with 29 points, had two assists. Marc-Andre Fleury, one win shy of his 50th as a Golden Knight, made 43 saves.

Pirri has three goals in two games since being recalled from the American Hockey League's Chicago Wolves on Dec. 19.

BLUES 3, FLAMES 1

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - David Perron had a goal and an assist and Jake Allen made 28 saves to lead St. Louis.

Perron has nine goals and 11 assists in 16 games against Calgary since the start of the 2014-15 season.

Tyler Bozak and Oskar Sundqvist also scored to help St. Louis finish 2-1-0 on their trip through Western Canada.

Matthew Tkachuk scored his 16th goal for Calgary. The Flames have lost three straight. Calgary lost for the first time in regulation at home since Nov. 15, ending a 7-0-2 string.

KINGS 3, SHARKS 2

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Ilya Kovalchuk scored in overtime in his return from an ankle injury and lifted Los Angeles.

Kovalchuk also scored in the first period, and Alex Iafallo had a goal and an assist. Kovalchuk had missed 10 games after having an ankle bursectomy.

Kovalchuk hadn't recorded a point in his previous 11 games before the procedure. Jonathan Quick made 29 saves.

Joe Pavelski scored a tying goal with 30 seconds left in the third period. Martin Jones stopped 28 shots for San Jose, and Lukas Radil also scored.

PANTHERS 2, RED WINGS 1

DETROIT (AP) - Roberto Luongo made 33 saves and Florida defeated Detroit.

Mike Hoffman and Evgeni Dadonov scored for Florida. Panthers leading scorer Jonathan Huberdeau and captain Aleksander Barkov each had two assists. Barkov has seven points (four goals, three assists) in his last four games.

Thomas Vanek scored for Detroit and Jimmy Howard had 21 saves.

BLUE JACKETS 4, FLYERS 3

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Cam Atkinson scored two goals and Artemi Panarin had a goal and two assists as Columbus ran its winning streak to three games.

Zach Werenski also scored and Pierre-Luc Dubois added three assists for the Blue Jackets.

James van Riemsdyk had a goal and an assist and Sean Couturier and Phil Varone netted goals for Philadelphia, which lost its first game since interim coach Scott Gordon replaced the fired Dave Hakstol and 20-year-old Carter Hart took over the goaltending duties.

Hart allowed four goals on the first 15 shots he faced and finished with 15 saves.

Sergei Bobrovsky made 34 saves for Columbus.

BRUINS 5, PREDATORS 2

BOSTON (AP) - Patrice Bergeron returned to the lineup after missing 16 games and scored two goals, reaching 300 for his career in leading Boston.

Bergeron set up Brad Marchand's tie-breaking score as Boston won for the sixth time in eight games.

David Pastrnak had his team-leading 23rd goal and added two assists. Marchand had two assists and defenseman Charlie McAvoy set up Bergeron's first goal.

Jaroslav Halak stopped 28 shots in his third start for Boston and assisted on Sean Kuraly's empty-netter.

Ryan Johansen and Kyle Turris scored for Nashville, which lost its fourth straight (0-3-1) for the first time this season. Pekka Rinne made 27 saves.

PENGUINS 3, HURRICANES 0

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Sidney Crosby set up three goals and Matt Murray made 38 saves as Pittsburgh blanked Carolina.

Jake Guentzel scored twice and Kris Letang added a goal for the Penguins, who won for the fifth time in six games. It was Murray's second shutout in 14 starts this season.

The Hurricanes lost for the fifth time in six games.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Linus Ullmark made 36 saves and Buffalo got goals from Rasmus Dahlin and Jeff Skinner in beating Anaheim.

Jack Eichel and Sam Reinhart each had two assists and Connor Sheary added an empty-net goal as Buffalo snapped a two-game skid in the second game of a back-to-back.

The Ducks finished a five-game road trip with their third consecutive loss following a 9-0-1 stretch. John Gibson stopped 21 shots.

Sabres broadcaster Rick Jeanneret was taken out of the press box on a stretcher early in the third period. It was unclear what happened to the 76-year-old Jeanneret, who opened the broadcast dressed in a red Santa Claus suit and a white beard. He has been the team's play-by-play man since 1971 - the longest tenure with a single team in NHL history.

COYOTES 6, AVALANCHE 4

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Brad Richardson scored twice in the final 3:39 to lead Arizona past Colorado.

Derek Stepan, Christian Fischer and Richard Panik scored for Arizona, and Conor Garland added his first career NHL goal.

Alexander Kerfoot scored twice, and Gabriel Landeskog, and Nathan MacKinnon added goals for the Avalanche, who have lost three of four. J.T. Compher added two assists for Colorado.

TORONTO (AP) - Mitch Marner scored twice during a wild third period and Toronto beat New York.

The teams combined for six goals in the final period, including Marner's empty-net goal with 20 seconds left after Chris Kreider cut the margin to 4-3.

Morgan Rielly had a goal and an assist, and Patrick Marleau and Andreas Johnsson also scored for Toronto (23-10-2). Frederik Andersen made 25 saves, and John Tavares and Johnsson each had two assists as the Leafs won their third straight game.

Neal Pionk and Kevin Hayes had a goal and an assist each for New York (15-13-5). Alexandar Georgiev made 31 saves.

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) - Pheonix Copley made 35 saves for his first career shutout for Washington.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Alexander Radulov scored with 10 seconds on the clock in overtime to give Dallas a win over Minnesota.

Ben Bishop made 30 saves for Dallas, and Jamie Benn finally beat Minnesota goaltender Devan Dubnyk 1:58 into the third period for his eighth goal in the past 14 games.

Dubnyk stopped 25 shots for the Wild, who have lost four in a row and nine of 12. Jason Zucker pushed the game to overtime with his 10th goal of the season with 2:03 left in regulation.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) - Mark Scheifele scored with 1:32 left in the third period and Laurent Brossoit made 40 saves for his first shutout for Winnipeg.

Scheifele scored his 22nd of the season from the left face-off dot on a give-and-go play with defenseman Dustin Byfuglien.

Brossoit's shutout is his first in 38 NHL games.

The Jets have won 11 of their last 13 games. The victory was Winnipeg's eighth straight victory over the Canucks.

The Canucks lost in regulation for just the second time in nine games (6-2-1).

Vancouver goaltender Jacob Markstrom stopped 22 shots.

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - Nikita Kucherov had a goal and four assists, Steven Stamkos and Tyler Johnson each scored twice and Tampa Bay extended its point streak to 12 games.

J.T. Miller also scored for the NHL-leading Lightning (28-7-2), who are 11-0-1 in their last 12 games for the best run by any team in the league this season.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Alex Chiasson and Leon Draisaitl scored for the Oilers (18-15-3), who have dropped three straight. Connor McDavid had three assists.

Edmonton goalie Mikko Koskinen lost for the first time on home ice this season, falling to 7-1-0.
