Blackwood earns 1st shutout, Devils top Hurricanes 2-0
December 29, 2018
By The Associated Press

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) Rookie goalie MacKenzie Blackwood stopped 37 shots for his first shutout and Pavel Zacha scored short-handed as the New Jersey Devils beat the Carolina Hurricanes 2-0 on Saturday.

It was the second straight victory for Blackwood, giving the Devils their first two-game winning streak since Nov. 13-15. Andy Greene added an empty-netter to seal the win.

Curtis McElhinney made 28 saves for the Hurricanes who have lost four of their last five.

Zacha broke a scoreless deadlock with 36 seconds left in the second period. He poked the puck away from Carolina's Justin Faulk and sped into the Hurricanes' zone. McElhinney made the initial stop and Zacha stayed with the play to collar the rebound and flip it into the net.

WILD 3, JETS 1

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Devan Dubnyk stopped 26 shots to help Minnesota end a season-high five-game losing streak.

Defenseman Matt Bartkowski scored in his debut with the Wild, and Charlie Coyle and Eric Fehr also scored. Zach Parise had two assists.

Patrik Laine scored on the power play for his 24th goal of the season for Winnipeg, and his first point in five games. Connor Hellebuyck finished with 21 saves for the Central Division-leading Jets.

Winnipeg has lost two straight for just the second time this season.

The Wild were 0-4-1 in the last five games, with only five goals during the stretch.

BLACKHAWKS 3, AVALANCHE 2 OT

DENVER (AP) - Patrick Kane scored his second goal of the game 41 seconds into overtime as Chicago outlasted Colorado.

The Blackhawks were on a power play when Kane knocked in the decisive shot from the slot off a feed from Jonathan Toews for Chicago's fifth win in six games. Two have come at the expense of the Avalanche, who lost their fourth straight.

Kane has a seven-game point streak and leads the Blackhawks with 22 goals.

Alex Debrincat also scored for Chicago. Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen had the goals for Colorado.

SHARKS 7, OILERS 4

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - Erik Karlsson had a goal and three assists, Logan Couture and Melker Karlsson each scored twice, and San Jose beat slumping Edmonton.

Joonas Donskoi and Tomas Hertl also scored for the Sharks, who have won two in a row.

Connor McDavid had two goals and Caleb Jones and Leon Draisaitl also scored for the Oilers, who have lost a season-high five straight.

McDavid got Edmonton on the board 6 1/2 minutes in, but Donskoi scored 17 seconds later. That was the first of six straight San Jose goals.

GOLDEN KNIGHTS 4, KINGS 1

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Malcolm Subban stopped 30 shots to help the Vegas beat Los Angeles and snap the Kings' four-game winning streak.

William Carrier, Alex Tuch, William Karlsson and Paul Stastny scored as the Golden Knights improved to 6-1-3 in their last 10 games.

Anze Kopitar scored for the Kings, and Jonathan Quick finished with 27 saves.

PANTHERS 2, FLYERS 1

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Jonathan Huberdeau scored with 1:06 left to cap a third-period rally and lift Florida.

Huberdeau scored his 10th goal by finishing a pass from Aleksander Barkov after Mike Hoffman scored a tying goal on the power play with just under seven minutes left.

Shayne Gostisbehere scored for the Flyers, who lost their second straight.

Barkov had two assists, and James Reimer stopped 34 shots. Carter Hart had 34 saves for the Flyers.

BRUINS 3, SABRES 2

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Sean Kuraly scored 3:44 into overtime to give Boston a win over Buffalo.

Jake DeBrusk and Noel Acciari scored in regulation for Boston. Tuukka Rask made 26 saves.

Kuraly's game-winner was a terrific one-man effort. His initial shot from the top of the left circle led to a big rebound, and Kuraly followed up with speed to chip the loose puck into the net.

Johan Larsson and Marco Scandella scored for Buffalo. Carter Hutton stopped 38 shots.

ISLANDERS 4, MAPLE LEAFS 0

TORONTO (AP) - Mathew Barzal scored a natural hat trick in the second period and Valtteri Filppula had a highlight-reel goal as New York prevailed in its first game against former captain John Tavares.

New York has won six of seven. Robin Lehner made 36 saves for his second shutout of the season, and Ryan Pulock had two assists.

The Islanders pounded the Maple Leafs in a reunion with Tavares, who signed with Toronto as a free agent July 1. The 28-year-old played nine seasons in New York, collecting 272 goals and 349 assists for 621 points in 669 games.

Garret Sparks stopped 24 shots as Toronto had its five-game winning streak halted.

CAPITALS 3, SENATORS 2

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) - Tom Wilson and Tyler Lewington each had a goal and an assist in Washington's win over short-handed Ottawa.

The Capitals have won four straight, and the Senators have dropped four in a row.

Madison Bowey also scored for the Capitals, and Pheonix Copley made 31 saves.

The Senators were without defenseman Thomas Chabot and fellow blue-liner Christian Jaros following injuries Friday in a 6-3 loss to the New York Islanders. Jaros broke a finger, and Chabot was placed on injured reserve with an upper body injury following a hit from Islanders forward Matt Murray in the second period.

Goaltender Marcus Hogberg made his NHL debut and finished with 21 saves, and Colin White and Mark Stone scored for the Senators, who are last in the Eastern Conference.

LIGHTNING 6, CANADIENS 5

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Adam Erne scored twice in the third period, including the go-ahead goal with 1:02 left, and NHL-leading Tampa Bay extended its point streak to 14 games.

Nikita Kucherov extended his point streak to 10 games (six goals, 15 assists) with a goal and an assist for Tampa Bay. He is the 14th player in NHL history to post multiple point streaks of 10 or more games in consecutive seasons. The only other player to do so since 1994-95 is Pittsburgh's Evgeni Malkin (2007-08 and 2008-09).

The Lightning, who are 13-0-1 during their current run, also got goals from Yanni Gourde, Anton Stralman and Tyler Johnson. Andrei Vasilevskiy made 33 saves.

Andrew Shaw had two goals, and Kenny Agostino, Jordie Benn and Brett Kulak also scored for the Canadiens. Phillip Danault had three assists, and Antti Niemi stopped 26 shots.

RANGERS 4, PREDATORS 3

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Jesper Fast scored two goals, including the game winner, and added an assist as New York snapped a three-game losing streak.

Chris Kreider had a goal and an assist, Marc Stall added a score and Mika Zibanejad had a career-high four assists for the Rangers, who earned their first road win in regulation this season. Henrik Lundqvist made 34 saves.

Nick Bonino scored a pair of power-play goals and Kevin Fiala also scored and had two assists for the Predators, who have lost six straight. Pekka Rinne made 18 saves.

STARS 5, RED WINGS 1

DALLAS (AP) - Alexander Radulov scored twice and Dallas routed Detroit.

The win comes a night after the Stars' front office ripped captain Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin by saying the high-priced forwards were underperforming for a team falling short of expectations.

Seguin had an assist and Benn was held without a point for the ninth time in 10 games.

Ben Bishop stopped 33 shots for the Stars.

Blake Comeau, Tyler Pitlick and Jason Spezza also scored for the Stars.

Detroit's Dylan Larkin ended the shutout early in the third period and extended his career-best points streak to 13 games, the longest active streak in the NHL.

PENGUINS 6, BLUES 1

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Sidney Crosby had a goal and three assists to lead surging Pittsburgh.

Juuso Riikola, Zach Aston-Reese, Kris Letang, Jake Guentzel and Evgeni Malkin also scored for the Penguins, who converted on all four power plays. Pittsburgh has won a season-best five consecutive games.

Matt Murray stopped 30 shots. He has won five straight starts since returning from a lower-body injury on Dec. 15.

Jake Allen allowed four goals on 17 shots before getting pulled for Jordan Binnington almost halfway through the game.

David Perron scored his 13th in the second period to break up the shutout bid.

CANUCKS 3, FLAMES 2 OT

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - Alex Edler scored 3:06 into overtime for Vancouver.

In a back-and-forth overtime, Brock Boeser sent a pass to Edler, whose shot dribbled through the pads of David Rittich.

Boeser and Elias Pettersson also scored for Vancouver.

The Canucks are 5-0-1 in their last six road games. Vancouver has four points through the first two stops of their six-game trip.

Mark Jankowski and Travis Hamonic scored short-handed goals for Calgary.

COYOTES 5, DUCKS 4 OT

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Nick Schmaltz scored 33 seconds into overtime and Arizona rallied from a two-goal deficit.

The Coyotes trailed 4-2 less than nine minutes into the second but tied it before the period was over. Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Christian Fischer, Nick Cousins and Jakob Chychrun also scored for Arizona, and Adin Hill stopped 37 shots.

Alex Galchenyuk and Clayton Keller each had two assists. Schmaltz and Ekman-Larsson also had assists for multi-point games.

Ondrej Kase had two goals for the Ducks, who have dropped five straight. Daniel Sprong and Adam Henrique also scored. Nick Ritchie had three assists and John Gibson made 25 saves.

Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Top 6 picks for Week 17 of Westgate SuperBook NFL handicapping contest:

1) Colts, -3 (972)

2) Browns, +6 (904)

3) Bills, -3.5 (847)

4) Eagles, -6.5 (800)

5) Vikings, -4.5 (758)

6) Texans, -6.5 (670)

Season record: 51-44-3

**********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday??

13) Clemson 30, Notre Dame 3? Oversimplification: the players in the orange uniforms ran a lot faster than the players in the white jerseys.

Clemson DC Brent Venables makes $2.2M a year, the 2nd-highest paid assistant in the country. LSU?s DC Dave Aranda makes $2.5M a year. To be an assistant coach.

ABC had 50 cameras covering this game; thats a lot of cameras and people working those cameras. Funny how ESPN did Mack Brown a huge favor by having him host Coaches? Film Room? Brown is the coach at North Carolina now. Good exposure for his recruiting.

12) Alabama 45, Oklahoma 34? Back-door cover by the Sooners, who trailed 28-0 two minutes into the 2nd quarter. Game wasn?t as close as final score indicates; Alabama averaged 11.7 yds/pass attempt and converted 7-10 on third down.

11) Clemson-Alabama will play for the national title in Santa Clara, CA, of all places; if you care about such things, Crimson Tide opened as 6.5-point favorites.

10) Kentucky 71, Louisville 58? These teams are both really young. Interesting when Jay Bilas was saying how a Kentucky player transferring to Washington helped the Wildcats, because it opened the door for another player to step in and now he is more comfortable in that role. It is possible for a team to have too many talented players- it squelches team chemistry.

9) Florida 41, Michigan 15? Wolverines lost 62-39 to Ohio State, then got drubbed here, not the best ending to Jim Harbaugh?s season. When four starters sit a bowl game out to preserve their health for the next level, thats a death knell for that team.

In four years under Harbaugh, Michigan is 3-9 vs Michigan State, Ohio State and in bowls.

8) New Jersey Giants? WR Jawill Davis dislocated his kneecap while dancing in the Giants? locker room this week. Seriously, he did.

7) Baseball doings:
? Angels signed C Jonathan Lucroy to a 1-year, $3.35M deal.
? Yasmani Grandal turned down a 4-year, $60M deal with the Mets.

6) North Carolina 82, Davidson 60? Davidson has players from seven countries, including this one; is it tougher to have good team chemistry with players from such diverse backgrounds?

Nationally, Maine has most international players (12); Saint Mary?s has 10.

5) Wizards? G John Wall is expected to have surgery on his left heel soon and will miss 6-8 months, which is obviously bad news for coach Scott Brooks? job security.

4) Upsets of the Day:
? Texas Southern (+16.5) 88, Texas A&M 73
? Princeton (+14.5) 67, Arizona State 66
? Florida Atlantic (+14) 73, Illinois 71 OT
? Longwood (+11.5) 110, Citadel 94
? Brown (+10) 82, San Diego State 61- Aztecs were down 28 at the half.
? Santa Clara (+8) 79, Washington State 71
? Western Kentucky (+7.5) 83, Wisconsin 76
? Liberty (+7.5) 73, UCLA 58? Bruins lost last two home games, to Belmont/Liberty. No bueno.
? Montana State (+7) 92, Southern Utah 62
? Gardner-Webb (+6.5) 73, Wake Forest 69

3) Rick Pitino won his debut coaching in Greece, leading Panathinaikos to a 96-84 win over CSKA Moscow Friday night. If you think I typed out ?Panathinaikos?, no way. Copy/paste.

2) Dumbest college football rule: 15-yard penalty for taking your helmet off on the field- if you do it twice, you?re out of the damn game. Just a ludicrous rule.

1) If you?re in Las Vegas and like betting NFL props, the Westgate SuperBook is by far the best place to go; lot of different wagering options for you there.

Pirri, Stastny help Golden Knights beat Coyotes 5-1
December 30, 2018
ShareFacebookTwitterDiggMySpace

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) Brandon Pirri and Paul Stastny each had a goal and an assist and Marc-Andre Fleury made 29 shots in the Vegas Golden Knights' 5-1 victory over the Arizona Coyotes on Sunday night.

Brad Hunt, Cody Eakin and Ryan Carpenter also scored to help Vegas win its third straight and extend its points streak to six games. The Golden Knights have won five of six games against Arizona since Vegas entering the NHL last season.

Vegas improved to 3-4-1 in the second game of back-to-backs this season. Arizona played for just the fourth time in a back-to-back situation and lost the second game for the first time this season.

A large following of Golden Knights fans made plenty of noise for the visiting team in the most recent installment of the fledgling rivalry, and saw their team take control with three goals in the third period.

The third was a short-handed goal from Carpenter, his second goal of the season.

Just when the Golden Knights' first power play ended, Pirri got a rebound behind the net and backhanded the puck back toward the crease, where Stastny was waiting to stuff it in the net at 3:35 of the first. Pirri has seven points in the six games this season.

Arizona's Nick Schmaltz appeared to tie at 1 with 8:54 left in the second period, but the goal was reviewed on a coaches' challenge and overturned for offside.

Vegas made it 2-0 with 3:57 to play in the second. Brad Hunt tipped a loose puck in front, and Smith got to it first for a shot that zipped past Kuemper.

Kuemper finished with 33 saves.

The Coyotes took advantage of a 5-on-3 power play with two Golden Knights in the penalty box to get their lone goal at the 2:58 mark of the second. Alex Galchenyuk scored, with Oliver Ekman-Larsson getting the assist.

Ekman-Larsson reached 312 career points, passing Keith Yandle for the most points in franchise history for a defenseman.

Galchenyuk ran his points streak to five games, in which he has totaled seven points.

Eakin edged the puck over the goal line at 4:21 of the third for his 12th goal of the season, and Pirri scored on a breakaway less than three minutes later.

Notes: Coyotes F Brad Richardson missed his third straight game with an illness. ... D Kevin Connauton was shaken up and went back in to the dressing room late in the first period but returned for a shift in the final seconds of the period and stayed in the game. ... Vegas F Valentin Zykov, just claimed off waivers on Saturday, was scratched. So were D Jon Merrill and F Tomas Nosek, who missed his first game since Dec. 20. ... F Alex Tuch was given a penalty for a check to the head when he drove a shoulder into Arizona's Nick Cousins, which led to the Coyotes' power-play goal in the second.

UP NEXT

Knights: Hosts Los Angeles on Tuesday night.

Arizona: Hosts Edmonton on Wednesday night.

Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Top 6 picks for Week 17 of Westgate SuperBook NFL handicapping contest:

1) Colts, -3 (972)- W

2) Browns, +6 (904)- W

3) Bills, -3.5 (847)- W

4) Eagles, -6.5 (800)- W

5) Vikings, -4.5 (758)- L

6) Texans, -6.5 (670)- W

Final season record: 56-45-3

**********

Armadillo: Monday's Den: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday

Cowboys 36, Giants 35? Not sure why Dallas played QB Prescott whole game, but they did and WR Beasley made a great catch with 1:12 left to win this game. Cowboys host Seattle next week; they?re in playoffs for only third time in last nine years.

Giants split their last eight games, scoring 27+ points in four of last five; six of those eight games were decided by four of fewer points. Big Blue lost nine of its last 11 games with Dallas.

Ravens 26, Browns 24? Baltimore was 4-5 and everyone assumed John Harbaugh was history, but they started rookie QB Jackson after their bye week and went on a 6-1 run that won them a division title. Ravens led this game 20-7 at halftime, then hung on for dear life; Browns had ball on their 40-yard line in last 1:20, but couldn?t get in field goal range.

Cleveland finished 7-8-1, their best record in 11 years; Mayfield is entrenched as their QB, and if you watched Hard Knocks this past summer, that probably surprises you. Good for them, but it sounds like Cleveland is going hire Mike McCarthy as head coach, instead of Gregg Williams.

Ravens host Chargers in playoffs next week; they upset Bolts 22-10 in Carson last week.

There was huge call in Ravens? favor in last 2:00 of first half; Jackson fumbled near goal line, but whistle blew while Browns were running ball back for TD. That call may have kept Steelers out of the playoffs.

Colts 33, Titans 17? Colts bounced back from 1-5 start to make playoffs for first time in four years. Indy visits Houston next week; they split a pair of 3-point decisions with the Texans this season. In second half of season, Colts were 4-0 in games decided by 3 or fewer points.

Mariota didn?t play, Titans didn?t win; Tennessee finished 9-7 for third year in row; they fired Mike Mularkey after he made playoffs LY, but Vrabel didn?t make playoffs this year, despite winning four of last five games.

Patriots 38, Jets 3? Bill Belichick has been the Patriots? coach since 2000; Jets fired Todd Bowles after the game. Patriots are #2 seed in AFC; as for rest of AFC East since 2000??..

? Buffalo coaches: Phillips, Williams, Mularkey, Jauron, Gailey, Marrone, Ryan, McDermott
? Miami coaches: Wannstedt, Saban, Cameron, Sparano, Philbin, Gase.
? Jets coaches: Groh, Edwards, Mangini, Ryan, Bowles.

Eagles 24, Redskins 0? Philly outgained Redskins 360-89, held Washington to 8 first downs, 0-9 on third down plays. Eagles made playoffs when the Bears won in Minnesota; they visit Chicago in first round game next week. Foles re-injured his ribs, didn?t finish this game, but defending Super Bowl champs won five of their last six games.

Redskins started season 5-2, but were ravaged by injuries; they scored 16 or fewer points in their last five games, starting four QB?s in their last seven games.

Bears 24, Vikings 10? Chicago won/covered nine of last ten games; in their last four games, they allowed only two offensive TD?s on 41 drives. Bears host Philly in playoffs next week.

Since 2004, Minnesota has had 11 different QB?s; Zimmer fired his OC during the season this year. Vikings are 47-32-1 under Zimmer, but he needs to get his offense in order next year.

Texans 20, Jaguars 3? Houston won 11 of last 13 games; they host Colts in playoffs next week. Texans are in playoffs for fifth time in last eight years.

Jacksonville went 10-6 LY and made playoffs for first time in decade; they lost 3-9 in last 12 games, scoring 17 or fewer points in last five games. Kyler Murray would look very good in a Jacksonville uniform next fall.

Falcons 34, Buccaneers 32? Atlanta swept the Bucs this year, scoring 34 points in both games; Falcons showed some grit, winning last three games after a 4-9 start. Average total in last six games in this series is 59.2.

Tampa Bay fired Dirk Koetter after the game; kind of unfair to keep the GM and fire the coach when the QB is the guy who got suspended for off-field hijinx which threw the Bucs? offense into disarray. Buccaneers haven?t made the playoffs since 2007- they were -18 in turnovers TY.

Bills 42, Dolphins 17? Miami went 4-9 after starting season 3-0; they lost their last seven road games, and were 2-6 as road underdogs this year. Dolphins converted 10 of last 50 plays on third down; I?m really not sure why they?re so committed to Tannehill as their QB.

Buffalo is 8-4 in its last dozen games with Miami, winning six of last seven series games played here; they outgained Dolphins 796-400 in two meetings this season, but split the games.

Steelers 16, Bengals 13? Pittsburgh misses playoff for first time in five years; they lost four of their last six games- four of their last five games were decided by exactly three points.

Bengals were one of six teams not to score an offensive TD this week; Cincy lost nine of its last 11 games, missing playoffs for third year in row. Bengals haven?t won a playoff game since 1991.

Chargers 23, Broncos 9? 12-4 Chargers didn?t win AFC West, so they?re going to Baltimore for first-round playoff game this week; they were upset 22-10 at home by Ravens in Week 16. LA won five of its last six games overall. Chargers are 7-0 outside of LA this season.

Denver finishes with consecutive losing season for first time since 70?s; have to think they?re going to be changing head coaches this winter.

Seahawks 27, Cardinals 24? Seahawks won six of last seven games, will visit Dallas in most interesting of the four playoff games next week; their last seven games with Arizona were all decided by 6 or fewer points. Cardinals had won their last three visits to Seattle.

There are rumors that Arizona will fire HC Wilks after only one year; would be second year in row that the coach QB Josh Rosen played for got fired? his coach at UCLA (Jim Mora) got the boot after last season. Redbirds should hire a QB guru to tutor young Rosen.

Arizona gets the #1 pick in drat for first time since 1958, when they were based in Chicago; that year, Redbirds took QB King Hill with first pick- he started only 29 games in 12 years, and most of those were for the Eagles.

Rams 48, 49ers 32? 49ers turned ball over on their first three drives; on their first two drives, Rams started on SF 7 and SF 13-yard line, scoring TD?s both times. 49ers went 0-8 on road this year for first time since 1979, the year the Rams made Super Bowl for the first time.

LA gets a first-round bye and will host a playoff game on January 12th, a Saturday night.

Lions 31, Packers 0? Six highest-paid QB?s in the NFL missed playoffs this year:
? Aaron Rodgers: $33.5M
? Matt Ryan: $30M
? Kirk Cousins: $28M
? Jimmy Garoppolo: $27.5M
? Matthew Stafford: $27M
? Derek Carr: $25M

Chiefs 35, Raiders 3? Oakland was 12-4 only two years ago, but things change quickly in the NFL- they went 10-22 the last two seasons. If I was paying a coach $100M over ten years, I?d have expected more than a 4-12 first season. Here is the draft order for April?s draft:

1) Cardinals
2) 49ers
3) Jets
4) Raiders
5) Buccaneers
6) Giants

Panthers 33, Saints 14? The game meant nothing for New Orleans and it showed, since Drew Brees was in street clothes. Teddy Bridgewater is a free agent this winter, so the game meant a lot to him; have feeling he?ll be a starter somewhere in NFL next season.

Carolina snapped a 7-game skid here; Ron Rivera will return as coach next season. Had they lost this game, Panthers would?ve been first team ever to finish season 6-10 after having been 6-2.

Blackwood earns 2nd shutout, Devils top Canucks 4-0
December 31, 2018
By The Associated Press

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) Rookie goalie Mackenzie Blackwood stopped 25 shots to earn his second straight shutout and the New Jersey Devils defeated the Vancouver Canucks 4-0 on Monday.

Blackwood is 3-1 since joining the Devils on Dec. 18th. He blanked the Carolina Hurricanes 2-0 on Saturday, becoming the first rookie goalie in franchise history to post back-to-back shutouts

Brian Boyle, Miles Wood, Sami Vatanen and Pavel Zacha scored for the Devils. It was Zacha's second goal in as many games.

Anders Nilsson stopped 19 shots for Vancouver.

The Devils have won three straight for the first time since their first three games of the season.

ISLANDERS 3, SABRES 1

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Robin Lehner made 39 saves against his former team and the Islanders beat Buffalo as New York coach Barry Trotz moved into fourth place on the NHL's all-time win list.

Trotz picked up his 783rd career victory and moved passed Islanders franchise legend Al Arbour on the list.

Nick Leddy, Brock Nelson and Ryan Pulock scored for the Islanders, who won their four straight and for the seventh time in eight games.

Kyle Okposo scored and Carter Hutton stopped 30 shots for Buffalo, which has lost three in a row and five of six.

PREDATORS 6, CAPITALS 3

WASHINGTON (AP) - Ryan Johansen had a goal and two assists, Viktor Arvidsson and Rocco Grimaldi each added a goal and an assist as Nashville scored five unanswered goals to break its six-game losing streak.

Johansen's seventh goal of the season beat Braden Holtby to tie the score at 3 as the Predators scored three goals in 4:33 to take a 4-3 lead.

Miikka Salomaki, Frederick Gaudreau and Ryan Ellis add goals, and Pekka Rinne stopped 22 shots for the Predators, who ended their longest skid since an eight-game slide from April 4-19, 2013.

Braden Holtby stopped 28 shots for the Capitals. Michal Kempny, Jakub Vruna and Chandler Stephenson scored for Washington, which had its four-game winning streak halted.

HURRICANES 3, FLYERS 1

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Lucas Wallmark, Jordan Martinook and Andrei Svechnikov scored for Carolina, which won for the second time in six games.

Curtis McElhinney stopped 22 shots for the Hurricanes.

Jakub Voracek scored for Philadelphia, which lost for the third time in four games and fell to 3-3-1 under interim coach Scott Gordon. Carter Hart started in the nets for the Flyers, but allowed three goals on 10 shots and was replaced by Michal Neuvirth, who stopped all 23 shots he faced.

PENGUINS 3, WILD 2

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Phil Kessel had a goal and two assists, and Sidney Crosby added a goal and assist for surging Pittsburgh.

Casey DeSmith made 31 saves for Pittsburgh, which tied its season high with its fourth straight road win.

Kessel has three points in each of his past three games and Crosby has four straight games with multiple points for the Penguins, who have won eight of their past 10 games, a season-high six games in a row and finished December 11-3-1.

Mikko Koivu scored for the first time in 15 games and Zach Parise added his 17th goal of the season for the Wild. Devan Dubnyk made 29 saves for Minnesota, which has lost eight of its past 11 games.

RANGERS 2, BLUES 1

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Henrik Lundqvist made 39 saves and New York got goals from Mats Zuccarello and Boo Nieves.

New York has won consecutive games for the first time since taking three in a row from Nov. 17-21.

The Rangers had allowed at least four goals in eight of their past 11 games before shutting down St. Louis. The Blues have 11 home losses in regulation this season, tying them with the Coyotes and Kings for most in the NHL.

The only goal Lundqvist gave up came at 10:08 of the first period when the Blues went ahead 1-0. David Perron fed Ryan O'Reilly, who fired a slap shot from the left faceoff circle for his 15th goal. O'Reilly has six points (three goals, three assists) in his last seven games against Rangers.

BLUE JACKETS 6, SENATORS 3

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Zach Werenski broke a tie late in the game with the second of his two goals and Sergei Bobrovsky had 22 saves as Columbus beat struggling Ottawa.

Pierre-Luc Dubois had a career-high two goals and two assists as the Blue Jackets won for the sixth time in seven games and moved within two points of Washington atop the Metropolitan Division. Cam Atkinson and Josh Anderson got empty-net goals in the final minute to turn it into a rout for surging Columbus.

Ryan Dzingel scored twice and Bobby Ryan added a goal for Ottawa, which lost its fifth in a row.

Rookie Marcus Hogberg - who made his first career start Saturday against Washington - didn't play badly, finishing with 32 saves.

Tuesday?s 6-pack

NBA?s top six players in 3-point %age:

6) Bojan Bogdanovic, Pacers 46%

5) Derrick Rose, Wolves 46.2%

4) Danilo Gallinari, LAC 46.4%

3) Davis Bertans, Spurs 48%

2) Joe Harris, Nets 48.3%

1) Seth Curry, Trailblazers 50%

Quote of the Day
?Throughout my career as an athletic director, I have maintained a belief that making a head coaching change during a season is rarely in the best interests of our student-athletes or program.?
UCLA AD Dan Guerrero, who fired his basketball coach anyway on Monday

Tuesday?s quiz
Where did Shaquille O?Neal play his college basketball?

Monday?s quiz
Fred Dalton Thompson played a DA on Law and Order for five years, then later ran for the Republican nomination for President in 2008.

Sunday?s quiz
In the great TV show M*A*S*H*, Hawkeye Pierce?s real name was Benjamin Franklin Pierce.

Tuesday?s List of 13; Happy New Year, everyone!!!!

13) This is the first NFL season ever where no team finished 8-8; NFL went to the 16-game schedule in 1978, with two seasons since then shortened by work stoppages.

12) Eight NFL head coaches were fired Sunday/Monday, 25% of the league?s coaches.

11) Steelers? star WR Antonio Brown missed Sunday?s game with the Bengals, but apparently he wasn?t hurt, he was being disciplined after an incident in practice with a teammate, who was Ben Rothlisberger. Witnesses say it was a fairly ugly incident.

Sounds like it was an unhappy year in Pittsburgh, with Le?Veon Bell?s holdout and the coach screwing up game management situations and now Brown at odds with teammates. Throw in the defensive coordinator not knowing that Bengals? TE Tyler Eifurt was hurt back in October, and it wouldn?t be surprising if whole lot of people were let go Monday, but they weren?t.

10) Oakland Raiders hired NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock as its GM; Mayock has been contributing to NFL Network and NFL.com since 2004, mostly in scouting, but he?s never worked in an NFL front office before.

Raiders have three first round draft picks in April and $100M in cap room to work with.

9) UCLA?s basketball team is 7-6 and has lost its last four games, which cost Steve Alford his job Monday. Bruins lost at home to Belmont, Liberty- those teams are both ranked in the top 80, but the coaching change was made, even before conference play begins. Our society isn?t terribly patient. Alford is a good guy; not sure why a move had to be made right now.

Alford/UCLA never seemed like a great match; will be fascinating to see where Bruins set their sights for a new coach. Murry Bartow is the interim coach; his father Gene was the coach who replaced John Wooden at UCLA, and who later started UAB?s basketball program.

Would Billy Donovan have any interest in the UCLA job? I?d have to ask, if I?m UCLA.

8) Mark Richt was fired as football coach at Miami; official word was ?retired?, but guys don?t quit jobs like that. Richt is 58, would be curious to hear him on TV, hopefully learn from him.

Houston fired coach Major Applewhite; Dana Holgorsen has been mentioned as a potential target for the Cougars, but how is Houston a better job than West Virginia? Kliff Kingsbury has apparently turned down ?a lucrative offer? from Houston to stay on as an assistant at USC.

7) Manny Diaz left as DC at Miami to become head coach at Temple, but when Richt retired (or was fired), Diaz quickly bolted Temple and is now the head coach at Miami. Oy.

6) Ole Miss signed former Michigan/Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez as its new OC, joining former Colorado coach Mike MacIntyre as its new DC, giving the Rebels an impressive staff around relatively inexperienced head coach Matt Luke.

6) This from the Grand Forks Herald:

Dan Shrader is a 38-year old full-time sanitation worker in the Minneapolis/St Paul area, who spends 50 hours a week driving a daily garbage route, dumping trash at the landfill and helping manage a 32-truck fleet.

He never played in the NHL, he never played college or pro hockey, he never played organized hockey growing up, period, but he is an amateur scout for the Winnipeg Jets, in charge of watching the Minnesota region for prospects. Pretty good second job for a garbageman.

If you like something a lot and work hard enough at it, all things are possible.

5) Hartford 79, Boston College 78 OT? ACC teams shouldn?t lose to America East teams.

4) City of Toronto had free bus/subway service from 7pm-7am New Year?s Eve, which is really good. More cities should do that; the less people who drive on New Year?s Eve, the better.

3) Stanford 14, Pittsburgh 13? Condoleeza Rice was on the Stanford sidelines for this game; not sure if she was auditioning for a coaching job or not. Pitt finishes year 7-7; always wondered if kids like enjoy going to El Paso for a bowl- seems like an unusual place for a bowl.

2) Oregon 7, Michigan State 6? In its last four games, Michigan State scored 6-6-14-6 points. That not good. Before Monday, last time they completed more than half their passes was October 27.

Mario Cristobal gets a bowl win in his first year at Oregon; it was Ducks? first bowl wins since 2014, in a season when they had their third HC in last three years.

1) Hope you guys out there all have a Happy New Year; thanks for reading. I?m hoping that 2019 will be a year when we all get along better and tolerate each other?s opinions more. Our diversity is part of what makes this country unique, in a good way.
