13) Interesting discussion on MLB Network during the Winter Meetings about the money guys get paid and might get paid soon? former GM John Hart was saying that ?good clubhouse guys? don?t get extra consideration anymore in this age of analytics.

Think about it; these guys live/work/travel together for 7+ months; the Mariners imploded last year, with a post-game brawl in the clubhouse in front of the media. Being a good teammate is an important thing, and teams that diminish the importance of that are missing out.

12) But to a lot of teams, it is all about numbers, like my fantasy league. Last year, in one 3-game stretch, Nick Williams batted 5th one day, 3rd the next game, 8th the game after that, and the third game wasn?t against a lefty, so it wasn?t a platoon decision.

No matter what your numbers say, athletes have self-doubts too; screwing with their heads by jerking them around the lineup every day is not the way to maximize their production.

There is a middle ground between analytics and old-school thinking; the smart teams live on that middle ground.

11) Apparently they have a trade show at the Winter Meetings; you can buy a hat/jersey from any major/minor league team. That would be an expensive week for me.

10) Kansas City Chiefs lost their last six home playoff games; their last playoff win at Arrowhead was in 1993, when Joe Montana was their QB. They?ll get a chance to end that hideous streak next month.

9) Temple?s new football coach Manny Diaz used to be a production assistant at ESPN, at the same time Bill Parcells was doing a studio show there, 20 or so years ago. The two men would talk about football and how Diaz wanted to get into coaching? Parcells helped jumpstart his coaching career, with Florida State his first stop.

Diaz wound up being an assistant at eight colleges over the last 20 years, and now he is a head coach at Temple. His last stop was as an assistant at Miami; Diaz? father used to be the mayor of Miami. Owls will be fun to follow going forward.

8) From the great NFL guru Gil Brandt:

Since 2000, there were 2,058 instances in which an NFL team trailed by 14+ points with 5:00 or less to play, and only once before had a team come from behind to pull out the win. Thats how rare the Chargers win in Kansas City was Thursday night.

7) I had always heard that NBA star Allen Iverson was a terrific high school football player, but I had never seen film of him playing until the other day.

He reminded me of Oklahoma QB Kyler Murray; fast as hell, pretty good arm, now this is in high school, and back when he was in high school, college teams didn?t pass as much as they do know, but Iverson has to watch today?s game and wonder where he would have fit in.

6) Spencer Dinwiddie gets a three-year, $34M contract extension from the Nets.

5) He is scoring 10.7 ppg in 27.4 mpg in his rookie season for the LA Clippers, but until this week, 20-year old Shai Gilgeous-Alexander didn?t have his driver?s license- he got it this week.

4) The Carlos Santana era in Seattle didn?t last long; ten days in December. Mariners got him from Philly, then dealt him back to Cleveland, where he played from 2010-17.

3) No one asked me, but if the money was equal, I?d rather have Bryce Harper than Manny Machado. If you have one of those guys on your fantasy team, you?re a little queasy about where they?re going to wind up. Machado is leaving a hitter?s paradise in Baltimore.

Machado?s brother-in-law is Yonder Alonso, who seems expendable now in Cleveland with the acquisition of Santana and Jake Bauers. Will they wind up on the same team? The baseball team in the Bronx needs a first baseman, and they supposedly want to sign Machado.

Update: Alonso apparently got traded to the White Sox Friday night.

2) San Diego Padres signed 2B Ian Kinsler, giving him $8M for two years.

Kessel scores in OT, Pens beat Kings 4-3

PITTSBURGH (AP) Phil Kessel scored a power-play goal at 3:59 of overtime to give the Pittsburgh Penguins a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday night.

Evgeni Malkin pushed a loose puck from the slot to Kessel, and he finished near the side of the net for the Penguins' fifth victory in seven games.

Tanner Pearson scored against his former team, and Matt Cullen and Bryan Rust also had goals for the Penguins. Matt Murray made 38 saves for his first victory since Oct. 25 at Calgary.

Murray stopped Tyler Toffoli's breakaway in the first 30 seconds of overtime. The goalie also denied a quality overtime chance from Jake Muzzin in the slot.

Muzzin, Matt Luff and Alex Iafallo scored for Los Angeles, and Jonathan Quick stopped 32 shots. The Kings have lost four straight and eight of 10.

Iafallo tied it at 3 with a power-play goal at 12:30 of the third period.

CAPITALS 4, SABRES 3, SO

WASHINGTON (AP) - Alex Ovechkin scored his NHL-leading 29th goal of the season to extend his points streak to a career-best 14 games and had the shootout winner for Washington.

Ovechkin has 17 goals and six points during his points streak and has scored in six in a row. The Stanley Cup champion Capitals have won five in a row.

Brett Connolly and Jakub Vrana also scored, and Pheonix Copley made 25 saves. Sabres captain Jack Eichel scored twice and No. 1 overall pick Rasmus Dahlin had a power-play goal for Buffalo.

PANTHERS 4, MAPLE LEAFS 3, OT

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Aleksander Barkov scored at 3:24 of overtime to complete his first NHL hat trick and lift Florida past Toronto.

Barkov slipped the puck past goalie Frederik Andersen from the right side of the crease.

Jonathan Huberdeau had a goal and an assist, and Roberto Luongo made 29 saves to help the Panthers snap a four-game skid. Mitchell Marner scored twice for Toronto, John Tavares added his team-high 20th goal and Andersen stopped 28 shots. The Maple Leafs have lost four of their past five,

The Maple Leafs tied it at 3 with 1:39 left in regulation on Marner's second goal.

FLAMES 2, WILD 1

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Matthew Tkachuk scored the go-ahead goal midway through the third period for Calgary, and David Rittich made 34 saves against Minnesota.

Mark Giordano scored short-handed in the first period for the Pacific Division-leading Flames. They are 11-2-1 in their last 14 games, with 10 wins in regulation, and lead the NHL with 50 third-period goals. Jordan Greenway scored for the Wild.

DUCKS 2, BLUE JACKETS 1, OT

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Daniel Sprong scored 1:19 into overtime to lift Anaheim past Columbus.

Adam Henrique won a faceoff in the Ducks offensive zone, and Sprong beat Sergei Bobrovsky with his second goal of the night.

John Gibson stopped 36 shots for Anaheim. The Ducks have won four straight and eight of nine.

Markus Nutivaara scored for Columbus.

CANADIENS 5, SENATORS 2

MONTREAL (AP) - Shea Weber scored the tiebreaking goal in Montreal's four-goal third period and the Canadiens beat Ottawa for the third time in 12 days.

Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Matthew Peca each had a goal and an assist, and Paul Byron and Jonathan Drouin also scored for the Canadiens. Carey Price stopped 16 shots to win his fifth straight.

Colin White and Mikkel Boedker scored for the Senators.

AVALANCHE 6, STARS 4

DENVER (AP) - Gabriel Landeskog scored twice, including the winner with 3:20 remaining, Mikko Rantanen added two more on the power play and Colorado recovered after blowing a three-goal lead.

Esa Lindell and Tyler Seguin brought Dallas back by scoring 44 seconds apart in the middle period. Seguin added another in the third and Jamie Benn tied it with 4:36 left.

Landeskog's winner was a redirect after a shot by defenseman Erik Johnson from the blue line. Nathan MacKinnon sealed the win with an empty-net goal. MacKinnon also had three assists to help the Avs snap a three-game skid that included an overtime loss in St. Louis on Friday.

ISLANDERS 4, RED WINGS 3, SO

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) - Mathew Barzal scored on a power play in the third period and had the only goal in the shootout to lift New York past Detroit.

Anthony Beauvillier and Casey Cizikas also scored in regulation, and Thomas Greiss made 18 saves for New York. Thomas Vanek had a goal and two assists, and Gustav Nyquist and Trevor Daley added goals for Detroit.

PREDATORS 2, DEVILS 1, SO

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Ryan Johansen scored the winning goal in the sixth round of the shootout to lift Nashville past New Jersey.

Frederick Gaudreau scored in regulation and Juuse Saros made 33 saves through overtime to help the Predators win their third straight. Brian Boyle scored for the Devils and Keith Kinkaid made 27 saves.

CANUCKS 5, FLYERS 1

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) - Brock Boeser had a goal and an assist to lead Vancouver.

Chris Tanev, Loui Eriksson, Josh Leivo and Markus Granlund also scored for the Canucks, and Troy Stecher had two assists. Jacob Markstrom stopped 31 shots.

Scott Laughton scored for the Flyers, who lost for the second time in two nights. Philadelphia finished a five-game trip in which it earned just three points. Anthony Stolarz stopped two-of-four shots before he left midway through the first period Due to a lower-body injury. Backup Alex Lyon made 17 saves.

NEW YORK (AP) Alex Tuch buried a sharp-angled shot just over two minutes into overtime, giving the Vegas Golden Knights a 4-3 victory over the New York Rangers on Sunday.

Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 27 shots in his 423rd career victory, which moved him into a tie with Tony Esposito for ninth on the NHL's wins list.

Paul Stastny, Reilly Smith and William Carrier scored for Vegas, which extended its points streak to four straight games.

Chris Kreider, Brady Skjei and Mika Zibanejad scored for the Rangers, and Kevin Hayes had three assists. Henrik Lundqvist made 37 saves as New York dropped its third consecutive home game, all after regulation.

FLAMES 7, BLUES 2

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Johnny Gaudreau and Alan Quine each scored twice, and Calgary beat St. Louis.

The Flames have won eight of nine and lead the Western Conference with 46 points. Matthew Tkachuk, Elias Lindholm and Mark Giordano also scored, and David Rittich made 26 saves.

Calgary scored four times on its first 15 shots in the opening period and cruised to improve to 12-2-1 in its past 15.

Oskar Sundqvist and Tyler Bozak scored for St. Louis, which was trying for its first three-game winning streak of the season.

JETS 5, LIGHTNING 4, OT

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Mark Scheifele scored 4:18 into overtime to lift Winnipeg over league-leading Tampa Bay for its season-high fifth straight win.

Patrik Laine skated in front of Lightning goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy and lost the puck while Scheifele swooped in and cleaned up the rebound for Winnipeg's third straight overtime win. Scheifele also had two assists, and the Jets tied for second in the NHL with Calgary.

Nikolaj Ehlers scored twice, and Mathieu Perreault and Brandon Tanev also scored for the Jets.

Steven Stamkos had a goal and an assist for the Lightning. Nikita Kucherov, Alex Killorn and Tyler Johnson also scored.

SABRES 4, BRUINS 2

BOSTON (AP) - Jeff Skinner tucked the winning goal past Tuukka Rask with 3:13 remaining for his second score of the night, and Buffalo beat Boston.

Skinner's team-leading 24th goal came off a feed behind the net from Jack Eichel, who had two goals and two assists in his return to Boston. Eichel grew up in nearby North Chelmsford and starred at Boston University.

Eichel added an empty-net goal with 24.2 seconds left. Linus Ullmark had 35 saves for the Sabres (20-9-5), who had lost six of eight.

Steven Kampfer and Torey Krug scored and Rask made 23 saves for Boston (17-12-4).

SHARKS 7, BLACKHAWKS 3

CHICAGO (AP) - Melker Karlsson, Evander Kane, Kevin Labanc, Tomas Hertl and Logan Couture each had a goal and an assist, and San Jose rallied for its fourth straight win.

Marcus Sorensen and Barclay Goodrow also scored for the Sharks, who connected for three straight goals in the second period to take charge. Brent Burns had three assists for San Jose, which has won six of seven and climbed into a tie with Anaheim for second in the Pacific Division.

Chicago goalie Corey Crawford left the game with 1:30 left in the first period after the back of his head struck the right post during a goalmouth pileup. He allowed two goals on eight shots and exited with the Blackhawks leading 3-2.

Alex DeBrincat, Dylan Strome and Brendan Perlini scored in the first period for last-place Chicago, which lost for 10th time in its last 11 games despite grabbing an early 2-0 lead. Cam Ward replaced Crawford and gave up five goals on 35 shots.

HURRICANES 3, COYOTES 0

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Warren Foegele scored his first goal since October, Petr Mrazek made 23 saves in his first shutout of the season and Carolina beat Arizona.

Defenseman Calvin de Haan had two assists for the Hurricanes, who won for only the second time in seven games this month.

Andrei Svechnikov and Sebastian Aho also scored for Carolina.

Colts are tied with Ravens/Titans for #6 seed in AFC with two weeks left; they ran ball for 178 yards in this game. Andrew Luck has to be Comeback Player of the Year, yes?

Bengals snapped a 5-game losing streak with this win; they won their home finale the last seven years. Oakland heads home for what is likely their last-ever game in Oakland next Sunday. Cincy QB Driskel gets his first NFL win as a starting QB. Over is 5-2 in Bengals? last seven games.

Packers lost six of their last eight games- they?re 0-7 on road, 1-3-1 as road underdogs. Interesting to see with Packers eliminated, if Aaron Rodgers plays the last two games.

Titans 17, Giants 0? Tennessee ran ball for 215 yards on a rainy, dismal day in Swamp Stadium. Titans have now won three games in row; this was only second loss in last six games for Giants.

This was the Titans? first shutout since a Christmas Day win over Dallas in 2000. Tennessee is tied for last playoff spot; those two 1-point losses back in October have to sting now. Titns are 8-6; this was only 4th time the season they led at halftime.

Redskins 16, Jaguars 13? Josh Johnson?s last NFL start was December 4, 2011, a 38-19 loss for Tampa Bay against the Panthers. Seven years later, he gets his first win (1-5) as an NFL starter, and the Redskins are still alive in the playoff race.- they?re half-game behind Minnesota for the #6 seed. Washington is 7-0 when they allow 17 or fewer points, 0-7 when they allow more.

Jacksonville had 20 net passing yards in this game, averaging 0.9 yards per attempt. Jaguars lost nine of their last ten games; they?ve scored one TD on their last 30 drives, and stayed under their team total in eight of last ten games. They should draft Kyler Murray.

The Nashville Predators have gone 7-0 to the Under in their last seven games against Atlantic Division opponents but face an Ottawa side that has been the best Over play in the NHL.

Competing totals trends will go head-to-head in Ottawa on Monday, as the Nashville Predators look to continue their red-hot Under streak against the top Over play in the league. That game highlights a fun early-week schedule that includes the No. 1 team in the NHL looking to extend its hot streak in Vancouver, and two of this generation's greatest players resuming their rivalry in D.C. Total Opposites

After a brief dalliance with low-scoring games, the Ottawa Senators are back to their early-season form as they host the Nashville Predators on Monday night. The Senators have seen an average of 6.5 goals scored in their last two games after racking up three consecutive Unders. Ottawa remains the best Over play in the NHL to this point in the season, rocking a 22-9-3 O/U mark. The Predators are 15-17-1 O/U for the season but have been a solid situational Under play, having gone below the number in seven straight games vs. Atlantic Division opponents.

Cat Scratch Fever

The Buffalo Sabres remain one of the most pleasant surprises of the season ? but there's a tricky foe awaiting them this week as they host the Florida Panthers in a Tuesday night encounter. The Panthers come into this one having lost four consecutive road games but have dominated the Sabres in recent history, having won 20 of the past 26 meetings overall. That said, this is an entirely different Sabres team than in the past, one that enters Tuesday's showdown with wins in eight of its past 10 home games.

TB's OK in B.C.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have been difficult to beat this season ? but the Vancouver Canucks found a winning recipe back in October and will look to duplicate that success Tuesday at Rogers Arena. The Canucks used four third-period goals to steal a 4-1 win over the Lightning on Oct. 12, and will go for the sweep against a Lightning team that has won five of its previous six visits to British Columbia. It's worth noting that these teams have combined for three or more third-period goals in four straight meetings, so look at the Over on the third-period total as a strong option.

Crosby vs. Ovechkin

Two of the greatest players of the 2000s will tangle Wednesday as Alex Ovechkin and the defending-champion Washington Capitals host Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins. You certainly couldn't go wrong taking either player to record a point in this one; Crosby has amassed 66 points in 47 career games against the Capitals, while Ovechkin ? who leads the NHL with 29 goals ? has 58 points, including 35 goals, in 54 games vs. Pittsburgh. Also worth mentioning: The winning team has scored seven or more goals in four of the last nine meetings.

Goalie Profile: Sergei Bobrovsky, Columbus Blue Jackets

The Blue Jackets have fallen back to the pack in the Metropolitan Division standings, and Bobrovsky is at least partly to blame. The normally dependable netminder has gone 2-3-1 with a 3.93 goals-against average in December ? the second-highest mark among any player with at least five appearances. Bobrovsky is also sporting an .863 save percentage for the month, contributing to the Blue Jackets falling six points behind division-leading Washington. But despite the slump, the Blue Jackets are -145 favorites for Monday's game against visiting Vegas (+125).

Injury Update

More bad news for the Chicago Blackhawks, who have lost Corey Crawford to another concussion. Crawford is expected to miss time after San Jose's Evander Kane shoved Chicago forward Dylan Strome into him during the first period of the Sharks' 7-3 triumph. Crawford had been out since just before Christmas 2017 with a concussion before returning to action in mid-October. He has struggled mightily on the ice, going 6-14-2 with a 3.28 goals-against average and a .902 save percentage. The Blackhawks are 7-2 O/U in his previous nine appearances.

Hat Trick Trends

Things are looking up for the Capitals, who have fashioned a five-game winning streak coming into the week. Washington is now +1,200 to repeat as Stanley Cup champion, the sixth-best odds in the league.

The Over play has taken over as the dominant totals option yet again. After starting the season strong, the Over is making a major comeback, having cashed better than 65 percent of the time over the previous seven days.

Don't expect to see the Los Angeles Kings take a lead into the second period this week. The Kings have been ahead through the opening 20 minutes just three times in their first 34 games this season.
