Wednesday?s 6-pack

? Penn 78, Villanova 75? Villanova?s 25-game Big Five win streak ends.

? Colorado 78, New Mexico 75? Buffs were down 17, improve to 8-1.

? New Mexico gets 6-10 Kansas transfer Carlton Bragg eligible Sunday

? Spurs 111, Suns 86? Popovich moves into 4th place on all-time win list.

? Orioles hired Cubs bench coach Brandon Hyde as their new manager.

? Texas Rangers hired former P Brandon McCarthy to help out in aspects of pitching development in the major and minor leagues.

Quote of the Day
?Sometimes it makes it worse when it?s right there. If you get blown out it doesn?t seem to hurt as bad as when you have a chance.??
Ben Roethlisberger

Wednesday?s quiz

The Clippers were in San Diego before they played in LA; what was the team?s name before they moved to San Diego?
(Hint: They had 2 or 3 really good/well-known players)

Tuesday?s quiz
Wayne Fontes was Lions? coach in 1991, last time Detroit won a playoff game.

Monday?s quiz
Matt Prater (then with the Broncos) holds the record for the longest FG in NFL history (64 yards); he kicked it against the Tennessee Titans.

************************

Wednesday?s List of 13: Mid-week musings??.

13) Things you don?t see much; Dallas ran 93 plays Sunday, Philly only 48.

Cannot remember last time an NFL team ran 93 plays in a game. Cowboys had only done it once before EVER, running 94 plays in a 1978 win over Green Bay.

Does being on the field for 93 plays have a hangover effect this week, when the Eagles visit the Rams in Los Angeles?

12) Very few NFL games get butchered the way New England butchered their loss in Miami last week; Brady took a sack at the end of the first half when Patriots were out of timeouts and in the red zone, costing his team three points, a horrible mistake that was a lot like Russell Wilson?s INT at the end of the first half Monday night.

Then Miami scoring on a 69-yard desperation play to get the walk-off win; why is Gronkowski on the field for that play? Play started on the Miami 31; Tannehill ain?t throwing a Hail Mary pass 70+ yards. I?m guessing the Patriots? flight home and defensive meetings Monday couldn?t have been very pleasant.

11) Minnesota Vikings fired OC John DeFilippo Tuesday, after the Vikings got whacked 21-7 by the Seahawks Monday night. Mike Zimmer has gone thru lot of QB?s/OC?s in his tenure as the Vikings? coach.

10) Royals signed free agent OF Billy Hamilton, who runs really fast but as my dad often said, ?He can?t steal first base.? When your on-base% is under .300, that not good.

9) More baseball dealings:
? Phillies gave Andrew McCutchen $16.7M a year for three years.
? Blue Jays released oft-injured SS Troy Tulowitzki, who is still owed $38M.
? White Sox acquired P Ivan Nova from Pittsburgh.

8) Steph Curry is going to host a PGA Tour event at Lake Merced Golf Club in Daly City, CA, starting in the 2019-20 season. The tournament doesn?t have a sponsor yet; the golf course is going to get $3.6M in upgrades before then.

7) Memphis Grizzlies equipment assistant Brian? Miller was offered $100,000 for the sneakers LeBron James gave her over the weekend, but she says she has no interest in selling them.

6) ESPN released 11 Sunday night telecasts for 2019; what a surprise- five Red Sox games, four Bronx games, three Dodger games, zero Astros games. And they wonder why the sport isn?t as popular as it used to be? Houston is the 4th-biggest city in the country and they are one of the best teams? put their young stars on TV!!!!

This doesn?t even need to be stated, but A?s/Rays aren?t on the list. Both won 90+ games LY.

5) MLB Network is great this week, watching stuff from Winter Meetings every day, but then they put this guy Charlie Montoyo on Tuesday at 6pm, and I had no idea he was Toronto?s new manager. He worked for Kevin Cash in Tampa for four years, so thats a good thing these days, working with another successful manager.

4) So its 4am Monday night/Tuesday morning and I?m winding down getting ready for bed, then I hear trucks outside, and they start jackhammering the road across street from me, digging this big hole. Seven feet deep, 25-30 feet long. It is freakin? 4am!!!!

So much for sleep??or water. Must?ve been a leak in the pipes.

Water came back on 11 hours later, the road looks like it is a war zone, kind of killed the day, though not having water to take a shower forced me to get some sleep. Feel bad for guys who are outside at 4am in 15-degree weather fixing plumbing.

3) City of Oakland is suing the Raiders, making it evident that this will be the Raiders? last year playing home games in Oakland- they?re moving to Las Vegas in 2020.

2) Football coaches are nomads: Ole Miss hired former Colorado coach Mike MacIntyre as its new defensive coordinator, which will make their defense a lot better. Ole Miss will have two new coordinators next year; their OC Phil Longo is off to the same job at North Carolina.

Former Bowling Green coach Mike Jinks is the new running backs coach at USC; no offense to the fine folks at Bowling Green, but thats a promotion- RB coach at USC is a better job than HC at Bowling Green- what a storied history of RB?s the Trojans have had.

1) Former Tennessee football coach Butch Jones was hired this week by Maryland as an assistant to new head coach Mike Locksley; both guys were assistants at Alabama this season.

Colin Kaepernick should go be an assistant coach at Alabama; maybe he could get a job in the NFL then. Every other Saban assistant gets a new job fairly quickly.

Nosek helps Golden Knights beat Islanders 3-2
December 12, 2018
By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) Tomas Nosek scored the tiebreaking goal early in the third period and the surging Vegas Golden Knights beat the New York Islanders 3-2 on Wednesday night.

Jonathan Marchessault and William Karlsson also scored to help the Golden Knights win for the 10th time in 13 games. Marc-Andre Fleury, making his 11th straight start, stopped 23 shots to take over the NHL victory lead with 18.

Anthony Beauvillier and Adam Pelech scored for New York. The Islanders have lost six of eight. Robin Lehner finished with 14 saves to fall to 0-4-2 in his last seven appearances.

Nosek put Vegas ahead when he jumped on the rebound of a shot by Oscar Lindberg and put it in for his third 3:32 into the third.

BLACKHAWKS 6, PENGUINS 3

CHICAGO (AP) - Jonathan Toews had a goal and two assists, and the Blackhawks snapped an eight-game losing streak.

Marcus Kruger, Brent Seabrook, Andreas Martinsen, Brandon Saad each had a goal and an assist for Chicago. Alex DeBrincat scored a power-play goal, and Corey Crawford made 40 saves.

Toews became the 16th active player to reach 700 career points with the same franchise. He assisted on Saad's empty-netter for his 701st point.

Kruger snapped a 3-all tie when he beat Casey DeSmith from the front of the crease 3:49 into the third period.

Bryan Rust scored three times for Pittsburgh in his second career hat trick. DeSmith blocked 23 shots in his sixth straight start.

FLAMES 6, FLYERS 5, OT

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - Johnny Gaudreau scored 35 seconds into overtime, lifting the Flames to the win.

Calgary trailed 5-3 before Sean Monahan and Rasmus Andersson scored in the final 68 seconds of third period. Gaudreau then secured the Flames' sixth win in seven games with his 13th goal of the season.

Matthew Tkachuk had four assists for the Flames (20-10-2), who leapfrogged idle Nashville for the top spot in the Western Conference. Monahan had two goals and an assist, and Gaudreau and Mark Giordano each had a goal and two assists.

Philadelphia (12-13-4) lost for the third time in four games. Sean Couturier had two goals and an assist for the Flyers in his return to the lineup after missing two games with a lower-body injury. Travis Sanheim, James van Riemsdyk and Dale Weise also scored.

DUCKS 6, STARS 3

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Ondrej Kase scored three times for Anaheim in his first NHL hat trick, and Brandon Montour had four points in the third period.

Anaheim trailed 3-2 midway through the third before scoring three goals in a three-minute span for its fifth win in six games.

Kase pounced on a loose puck in front and put it past Ben Bishop at 10:45. Montour, who also had three assists, gave Anaheim the lead 81 seconds later when he had a wide-open net after Bishop was knocked down by one of his own players.

Miro Heiskanen, Blake Comeau and Alexander Radulov scored for Dallas, which has dropped its last two after winning four straight. Bishop made 30 saves.

Looking at teams who allowed highest %age of 20+-yard plays on 1st down:

? Patriots have allowed 56 plays plays of 20+ yards; 37 on 1st down (66.1%)

? Chargers 32 of 52 plays (61.5%)

? Buccaneers 37 of 65 plays (56.9%)

? Steelers 30 of 55 plays (54.5%)

? Eagles 34 of 64 plays (53.1%)

? Lowest %age: Dallas 11 of 40 plays (27.5%)

Quote of the Day
?He?s good at basketball. I get asked that every day. I don?t know how to answer that anymore. Nothing he does surprises me.??
Steve Kerr, talking about Steph Curry

Thursday?s quiz
Where did Steph Curry play his college basketball?

Wednesday?s quiz
The Clippers were in San Diego before they played in LA; they were the Buffalo Braves before they moved to San Diego, with Bob McAdoo, Jim McMillian, Randy Smith, Ernie DeGregorio.

Tuesday?s quiz
Wayne Fontes was Lions? coach in 1991, last time Detroit won a playoff game.

***************************

Thursday?s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but??.

13) If you were a college football player, which bowl would you NOT want to play in? There are a ton of bowls, 39 if I counted right. We?ll talk about this later on this month, but no way would I want to go somewhere cold, like Boise or the Bronx or Detroit. Bowl games should be warm; at least the game in Detroit is indoors.

Anyway, did you know players get swag bags at bowl games? Here are three of some of the best swag collections EVERY player gets at these games???

12) New Mexico Bowl North Texas vs. Utah State
? Oakley Jupiter Squared sunglasses
? Oakley 5 Speed backpack
? Bluetooth speaker
? water bottle
? beanie
? Montgomery pen
? Pacific Headwear trucker?s cap

11) Valero Alamo Bowl Iowa State vs. Washington State
? $425 Amazon gift card? Every kid gets $425, a good deal for the scrubs
? Fossil watch
? mini helmet
? team panoramic photo

10) AutoZone Liberty Bowl Missouri vs. Oklahoma State ?
? Shopping trip to Memphis? Bass Pro Shops
? Bose SoundLink micro Bluetooth speaker;
? Bulova watch
? Nike athletic shoes
? sport sandals
? backpack and sunglasses
? football

9) Minnesota QB coach Kevin Stefanski will take over as the new offensive coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings, after John DeFilippo was fired Tuesday. Here?s an idea; let your QB call his own damn plays? he makes $28M a year, I?m guessing he could do it.

8) We mentioned the other day how Mike MacIntyre got fired as the head coach at Colorado and is now the DC at Ole Miss. Turns out that MacIntyre will now be making over $1M more per year than he was at Colorado, and he?s not even the head coach.

7) I have the NBA Full Court package on DirecTV; I enjoy watching good basketball, but I read the stuff about the Chicago Bulls revolting against their new coach and not wanting to practice the day after a 56-point loss and it makes me want to cancel my subscription.

Not sure what the solution is, but the league has a problem on its hands.

6) The sport that loses the most in transition from in person to on TV is hockey. If you?ve never gone to a college or pro hockey game, you should? it is great fun. Watch the officials; they?re such great skaters.

5) I think Bob Uecker should?ve gotten an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Indians? radio announcer Harry Doyle in the fine baseball movie Major League.

4) As recently as 1999, Vice-President Mike Pence was a radio talkshow host in Indiana. The guy?s head has to be spinning; his every move now is fodder for late-night comedians.

You have any idea how hard it is to just sit there with no emotion or no motion like he did in the Oval Office Tuesday? Someone on the Interweb compared him to the dead guy in Weekend at Bernie?s, and it didn?t seem like that big a stretch to agree with him.

3) Tampa Bay Rays? plans for a new ballpark in Ybor City officially died this week when owner Stu Sternberg had a press conference at the Winter Meetings. Sounds like the Rays might be locked into the Trop now, until 2027- they could easily wind up in Montreal eventually.

2) The Heisman Trophy that Tim Brown won in 1987 sold for $435,763 at a public auction recently. Lot of money for a trophy.

1) Pretty cool that the Blue Jays will be paying Troy Tulowitzki $18.4M a year for the next two years, while he probably plays 2B for the A?s, who will be paying him the big league minimum. Now if he can only stay healthy??.

By The Associated Press

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) Andrei Vasilevskiy made 48 saves in his return from a broken left foot and the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-1 on Thursday night in a matchup of the NHL's top two teams.

Alex Killorn and Tyler Johnson both scored for Tampa Bay during the final 36 seconds of the second period to make it 4-1. Vasilevskiy, who missed the previous 14 games, stopped all 23 shots he faced in the period.

Anthony Cirelli and Nikita Kucherov also had goals for the Lightning (25-7-1), who have won eight in a row and lead Toronto by eight points in the Atlantic Division. The franchise record is a nine-game winning streak in 2016.

Toronto got a goal from Kasperi Kapanen, and Frederik Andersen stopped 17 shots. The Maple Leafs have lost three of four (1-2-1) after a five-game winning streak.

SABRES 3, COYOTES 1

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Jeff Skinner scored his 22nd goal of the season as Buffalo defeated Arizona.

Casey Mittelstadt and Evan Rodrigues also had goals for the Sabres, who won their second straight following a five-game skid. Carter Hutton returned after missing Buffalo's previous two games with an upper-body injury and made 25 saves.

The Sabres improved to 11-3-2 at home, matching their win total from last season at KeyBank Center.

Christian Fischer scored for Arizona and Darcy Kuemper stopped 30 shots. The Coyotes have lost four in a row after a four-game winning streak.

BLUE JACKETS 4, KINGS 1

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Artemi Panarin scored twice, Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 29 shots and Columbus topped Los Angeles.

Lukas Sedlak and Josh Anderson also scored and Cam Atkinson assisted on both of Panarin's goals as the Blue Jackets snapped a two-game skid and held onto second place in the Metropolitan Division, three points behind Washington.

Dustin Brown had the lone goal and Jonathan Quick made 37 saves for the injury-ravaged Kings, who have lost three in a row and seven of their last nine while slipping to the bottom of the Pacific Division.

Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

Five NFL teams who started season 0-3 and still made playoffs:

? 1992 Chargers started out 0-4 and got to the Super Bowl.

? 1981 Jets lost the Wild Card game at home to Buffalo.

? 1995 Lions lost Wild Card game 58-37 to Philadelphia.

? 1998 Bills (with Doug Flutie at QB) lost Wild Card game 24-17 to Miami.

? 1982 Buccaneers made playoffs in strike-shortened season.

? 2018 Texans started season 0-3, look like a good bet to make playoffs.

**********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here??.

13) Planning way too far ahead: NFL announced that the 2020 NFL Draft will be held in Las Vegas, and I?ve already penciled that week in for a visit to the desert- thats going to be fun.

I?ve always wanted to go to the draft so that will get checked off the list next year; plus, the A?s AAA team plays in Vegas suburb Summerlin now so that could be a very busy week.

12) Speaking of Las Vegas, the Raiders are moving there in 2020, but it looks like they don?t have a home for 2019, with the city of Oakland suing the team.

My pick for where the NFL goes is San Antonio?s domed stadium, there is no NFL tenant there now- thats where the Saints played their home games when the Superdome was damaged after Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

11) Odd baseball stat: Over last two years, Texas Rangers? DH Joey Gallo has hit 81 home runs but only 70 singles. That doesn?t seem possible, but it is true.

10) Kawhi Leonard is a great basketball player, but the Toronto Raptors are 7-1 in games he?s missed this season; they just beat Clippers/Warriors without him on back/back nights.

9) This is Finals Week for most colleges, so hardly any college basketball this week, so credit to MLB Network for saving the TV week at the Winter Meetings, even though there wasn?t a lot of action as far as free agent signings or trades- lot of good conversation, though.

8) Word of the Day: Quisling- a traitor who collaborates with an enemy force.

Learned this word from watching Billions on Showtime, which is a great series that is well worth your time. When they used the word on Billions, had to go online and look it up, had never heard it before. Neither did one of the characters on the show.

7) This from Chris Fallica: Last 20 times an SEC team has been a 6+ point underdog in a bowl, (this goes back to 1999), the SEC team is 16-4 vs spread with 11 SU wins. Kentucky, Florida are both getting more than six points in their bowl games this month.

6) ESPN?s Jeff Van Gundy is one of us, a sports junkie- the guy is ESPN?s #1 NBA analyst but he went to two high school basketball games last week, and was complaining that high school hoop games (in most states) don?t have shot clocks (they do here in NY).

There was a Duke-North Carolina basketball game in the late 70?s that was 7-0 Duke at halftime; this was just before ESPN started and six years before the shot clock came to college ball, but I was in college back then and basketball without the shot clock was a game that coaches could strangle and they often did. Much better game now, way better.

5) Chargers 29, Chiefs 28? Wow, Chargers scored with 0:04 left to make it 28-27, then went for 2 and the win and ran a play that was totally wide open for the score. Bolts led this game only :04, but it was the right :04.

Teams are tied at 11-3, but Chargers have one more divisional loss, so Chiefs? game in Seattle next week becomes a huge game in the AFC West.

4) Charlie Morton gets $30M for two years from the Tampa Bay Rays that makes Morton the highest-paid Ray (or Devil Ray) ever, at $15M a year.

3) There was a 3-way trade in baseball:
Indians get: Carlos Santana and Jake Bauers.
Mariners get: Edwin Encarnacion and a competitive balance draft pick.
Rays get: Yandy Diaz and a player to be named later

2) Not only is Carson Wentz highly doubtful for Sunday night against the Rams, he could easily be done for the season. Wentz has a broken vertebrae in his back.

1) Best wishes to Seattle Mariners? GM Jerry Dipoto, who was hospitalized this week with blood clots near his lung. Get well soon, sir.

Alex Ovechkin a good bet and this weekend's NHL betting predictions and picks
Monty Andrews

Washington's legendary winger Alex Ovechkin is once again leading the league in goals and history suggests he is a good bet to score against the Capitals' two opponents this weekend.

Alex Ovechkin's potentially big weekend highlights a fun NHL slate, which includes the league's top Over play cooling off considerably, and a St. Louis Blues team looking to continue its positive regression in one-goal games. Here are the top NHL games and betting tips to monitor for the weekend's games.

The Great 8 in a Great Spot

It's hard to believe, but Ovechkin ? who has a league-best 25 goals entering Thursday night ? could become the oldest player to lead the NHL in tallies since Phil Esposito racked up 61 as a 33-year-old in 1974-75. And Ovi will be licking his chops as his Washington Capitals visit the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday before returning home to face the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday. Ovechking has scored 30 or more goals against 11 teams in his career ? and the Hurricanes (36 goals in 73 career meetings) and Sabres (30 goals in 45 games) are both on that list. He's a terrific goal option on the player prop front.

No Longer Singing the Blues

One-goal games are no longer a problem for the St. Louis Blues, who are creeping up the Western Conference standings heading into Friday's showdown with the visiting Colorado Avalanche. After kicking off the 2018-19 campaign with losses in each of their first eight one-goal affairs (0-5-3), the Blues have bounced back to go 3-0-1 since, including a 4-3 win over the Florida Panthers last time out. They could extend that run against an Avs team that has won just 27.3 percent of its one-goal decisions (3-3-5). Consider the Blues +1 margin of victory prop in this one.

Sens-ing a Missed Opportunity

The Ottawa Senators won Over bettors an awful lot of money over their first 29 games of the season ? but a natural regression has begun for the Sens as they take on the host Detroit Red Wings on Friday night. Ottawa opened the season having gone an incredible 21-6-2 O/U, but have since converted the Under in three consecutive games, with a total of 10 goals scored in those contests. With these two teams having gone below the number six straight times, expect the Under to hit again. Ottawa tangles with Montreal on Saturday; the rivals have averaged seven goals in their last three meetings.

Road Warriors

Recent meetings between Buffalo and Boston have been punctuated by home fans going home unhappy ? and that bodes well for the Sabres as they visit the Bruins in a Sunday evening encounter. The road team has won 12 of the previous 17 meetings between the Atlantic Division rivals, including five of the past seven. Under bettors should also take note: the teams have combined to score five or fewer goals in 13 of their past 18 games, most recently a 4-0 Bruins victory in the season opener on Oct. 5 in Buffalo.

Goalie Profile: Mike Smith, Calgary Flames

Is all forgiven in Calgary? Perhaps not, but Smith is doing his best to win back fans and bettors who might have bailed on him following a subpar start to the season. The Flames have won each of Smith's previous seven appearances, though he left after two periods in Wednesday's 6-5 overtime triumph over Flyers. His full-season stats (2.99 GAA, .888 SV%) still aren't that impressive, but he has allowed two or fewer goals in five of his past seven games and is worth investing in as long as Calgary is running hot.

Injury Update

Normally, this space features bad news ? but we're highlighting the triumphant return of Andrei Vasilevskiy to Tampa Bay. He returns to a Lightning lineup that played incredibly well without him, going 12-2 in his absence en route to the best record in the NHL. Vasilevskiy, who was sidelined with a broken foot, is in good position to help the Lightning keep rolling; he was 9-3-1 with a 2.29 goals-against average, a .927 save percentage and one shutout in 13 games prior to the injury. Tampa Bay enters the weekend as a +350 favorite to capture the Stanley Cup.

Hat Trick Trends

? Overs are back in a big way, with 32 of 49 games (65.3 percent) surpassing the total over the seven-day period going into Thursday night. Overs have now cashed 54.1 percent of the time over the past 30 days, though the season-long split is still incredibly close at at 50.8 percent in favor of the over.

? Looking for a lucrative combo play? Referee Kevin Pollock has the hook-up. Not only have Pollock's games produced the highest ROI for home bettors (+14.86 units), teams have gone 7-15 O/U over that span. So the next time Pollock hits the ice, bettors should consider the home team puckline and the Under.

? Live betting tip: It's OK to bail on three teams in particular when the opposing team scores first. The Los Angeles Kings, Chicago Blackhawks and New Jersey Devils all entered Thursday with identical 10 percent win rates when allowing the opening goal ? so if they fall behind 1-0, you should load up on the opponent.

Ovechkin nets 2nd straight hat trick, Caps top Canes in SO
December 15, 2018
By The Associated Press

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) Alex Ovechkin had his second consecutive hat trick and Jakub Vrana scored in the sixth round of a shootout to lead the Washington Capitals past the Carolina Hurricanes 6-5 on Friday night.

Ovechkin's three goals gave him an NHL-best 28 this season and nine in his last five games. His 13-game point streak matched his career high set in 2006-07.

Tom Wilson and Travis Boyd also scored for the defending Stanley Cup champions, who have won 11 of 13. The Metropolitan Division leaders got three goals in a 5:42 span of the second to tie it at 4, a burst capped when Boyd redirected in John Carlson's shot with 1:41 left in the period.

Justin Williams scored the tying goal with 6:12 remaining, and Sebastian Aho had two goals and two assists for Carolina. Teuvo Teravainen had a goal and two assists and Jordan Martinook also scored for the Hurricanes, who had three power-play goals but have lost three straight and six of seven.

Dougie Hamilton and Nicklas Backstrom both scored in the fourth round of the shootout. After Braden Holtby stopped Brock McGinn in the sixth round, Vrana ended it with a wrist shot to Scott Darling's glove side.

PENGUINS 5, BRUINS 3

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Jake Guentzel tipped in Kris Letang's shot midway through the third period to fend off a Boston rally, and Pittsburgh goaltender Casey DeSmith made it stand up.

Chris Wagner and David Krejci scored in a 54-second span of the third to erase a two-goal deficit for the Bruins, but Guentzel responded by redirecting Letang's drive from the point past Jaroslav Halak with 9:13 left to put Pittsburgh ahead to stay.

DeSmth did the rest, finishing with a career-high 48 saves as the Penguins ended Boston's three-game winning streak. Zach Aston-Reese had a short-handed goal and an empty-netter. Derek Grant and Phil Kessel also scored for Pittsburgh.

Brandon Carlo scored for the first time in 115 games and Halak stopped 24 shots for Boston.

DEVILS 5, GOLDEN KNIGHTS 4, OT

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Nico Hischier scored 41 seconds into overtime to cap New Jersey's comeback from three goals down against Vegas.

Travis Zajac, Miles Wood, Kyle Palmieri and Brett Sevey also scored for the Devils, who trailed 3-0 after one period and 4-1 in the second before rallying for their second win in five games. Cory Schneider gave up three goals on seven shots over the first 9:22 before he was pulled. Keith Kinkaid came on and finished with 14 saves.

William Karlsson had two goals, and Alex Tuch and William Carrier also scored for the Golden Knights, who lost for just the third time in their last 12 games. Marc-Andre Fleury made 37 saves and remained one win from tying Hall of Famer Tony Esposito for ninth place on the career list.

COYOTES 4, RANGERS 3, OT

NEW YORK (AP) - Derek Stepan scored against his former team with 32 seconds left on the clock in overtime and Arizona rallied from a three-goal deficit to defeat New York, snapping a four-game losing streak.

Jordan Oesterle, Josh Archibald and Oliver Ekman-Larsson also scored for the Coyotes, who trailed 3-0 early in the second period. Adin Hill stopped 27 shots.

Kevin Hayes had a goal and an assist, and Pavel Buchnevich and Mika Zibanejad also scored for the Rangers, who went 3 for 7 on the power play. Henrik Lundqvist made 30 saves.

With less than seven minutes remaining in the third, Arizona scored twice in 3:48 to tie it.

JETS 4, BLACKHAWKS 3, OT

CHICAGO (AP) - Mark Scheifele scored twice, including 50 seconds into overtime, and Winnipeg edged Chicago for its fourth consecutive victory.

Scheifele dug the puck out from behind the net, skated around the side and beat Corey Crawford for his 20th goal of the season. He has four goals and seven assists during a four-game point streak, including goals in each of the last three games.

The Blackhawks trailed 3-2 before Erik Gustafsson drove a one-timer from the slot past Laurent Brossoit with 7.5 seconds remaining in the third period.

Patrik Laine and Mathieu Perreault also scored as the Jets leapfrogged idle Nashville for the top spot in the Western Conference. Blake Wheeler had three more assists to run his total to 38, second in the league behind Colorado star Mikko Rantanen.

Winnipeg (21-9-2) won for the eighth time in nine games.

Jonathan Toews scored twice for last-place Chicago (10-19-5), which lost for the ninth time in 10 games. Crawford finished with 38 saves.

BLUES 4, AVALANCHE 3, OT

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Ryan O'Reilly scored a short-handed goal 2:05 into overtime to give St. Louis a victory over Colorado.

Colton Parayko scored twice and Ivan Barbashev also had a goal for the Blues. Jake Allen made 39 saves.

J.T. Compher had a goal and an assist, and Sven Andrighetto and Matt Calvert also scored for the Avalanche. Philipp Grubauer stopped 24 shots.

Blues star Vladimir Tarasenko was called for playing with illegal equipment in overtime after picking up Parayko's stick. O'Reilly scored 34 seconds later after getting sprung by a pass from Robert Bortuzzo.

SENATORS 4, RED WINGS 2

DETROIT (AP) - Mark Stone scored midway through the third period and Chris Tierney's second goal went into an empty net, lifting Ottawa over Detroit.

Stone had a goal overturned by video review in the first period, but there was no disputing the go-ahead goal he sent into the net after the puck was loose in the crease behind goaltender Jimmy Howard.

Tierney and Thomas Chabot gave the Senators a 2-0 lead in the first. Craig Anderson finished with 23 saves.

Detroit's Luke Glendening scored late in the first period and Dylan Larkin tied it midway through the second.

OILERS 4, FLYERS 1

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - Connor McDavid had two goals and an assist, Leon Draisaitl added three assists and the resurgent Edmonton Oilers beat Philadelphia.

Alex Chiasson and Adam Larsson also scored for the Oilers (18-12-3), who have won five of six and are 8-1-1 in their last 10 games. They improved to 9-2-2 under new coach Ken Hitchcock.

Edmonton goalie Mikko Koskinen made 31 saves and is 7-0-0 on home ice this season.

Sean Couturier was initially credited with Philadelphia's goal before it was given to Jakub Voracek after the game. The Flyers (12-14-4) have lost three in a row and six of eight.
