Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

XFL is going to be a spring football league that starts in 2020 in these cities:

? Dallas (Globe Life Park)

? Houston (TDECU Stadium)

? Carson, CA (where the Chargers play now)

? New Jersey (Met Life Stadium)

? Seattle (Century Link Field)

? St Louis (Edward Jones Dome)

? Tampa (Raymond James Stadium)

? Washington DC (Audi Field)

**********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud??.

13) Arizona Diamondbacks traded their star 1B Paul Goldschmidt to the Cardinals Wednesday for P Luke Weaver, C Carson Kelly, a minor-leaguer and a draft pick.

12) Denver Broncos? WR Emmanuel Sanders tore his achilles in practice Wednesday, and is obviously out for the season. Sanders caught 71 balls for 898 yards this season.

Within two hours of Sanders going down, Denver scooped up WR Andre Holmes off waivers from Buffalo. Holmes had previously played for OC Bill Musgrave in Oakland.

11) There are 130 I-A college football teams; 10 of them are now coached by guys who were at one time, assistant coaches at Alabama under Nick Saban. Colorado hired Mel Tucker this week, the latest former Saban aide to get his own program to run.

10) AAF is a spring football that starts in a couple months; they have eight teams and some big name coaches.

XFL is another spring football league that will start in 2020 and won?t be like the goofy XFL that played in 2001, for one year only. Vince McMahon still owns the XFL; they?ll have eight teams, Oliver Luck is the commissioner- they?re going to pay their QB?s around $250,000 a year.

9) San Antonio Spurs are only the 5th team in NBA history to lose three games by 30+ points within a week and they?re the first since the 2005-06 Trail Blazers.

8) Adam Ottavino is a relief pitcher for the Colorado Rockies; he was on MLB Network the other day and he was saying how his father is a character actor in Hollywood who has been seen on Law and Order, NYPD Blue and in the movie Presumed Innocent, among others.

7) Washington Redskins signed QB Josh Johnson to back up Mark Sanchez; Johnson was the 5th-round draft pick by Tampa Bay in ?08- he?s played in parts of 29 NFL games, is 0-5 as an NFL starter. He hasn?t appeared in an NFL game since ?14- he hasn?t thrown a pass since ?11.

Johnson played his college ball at the U of San Diego (not San Diego State) where his coach was current Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh.

6) When Notre Dame basketball player Rex Pflueger was in junior high, he was the QB of his 7th grade football team; one of his teammates was Sam Darnold, who is now obviously a QB in the NFL the first-round pick of the Jets last spring.

5) Fresno State is favored over Arizona State in the Las Vegas Bowl; it is only the 11th time in last 80 meetings between the two leagues that the Mountain West team is favored over a Pac-12 opponent.

4) Georgia State 83, Alabama 80? This game happened Tuesday night, when the Crimson Tide led by 21 at halftime and then lost. Georgia State had lost their previous game to Liberty by 26, so this was a terrible loss for Alabama.

3) Miami, FL was picked to finish in the middle of the pack in ACC basketball this winter, but they?ve now lost four games in a row, the last two to Ivy League teams, so it could be a long winter for the Hurricanes.

2) ACC football teams are 2-5 vs SEC opponents this year, 0-7 vs spread.

1) One of three.soldiers killed by an IED explosion last week in Afghanistan.was a man named Drew Ross, who was the son of former Georgia Tech/Chargers? coach Bobby Ross. and was in his second tour of duty overseas. RIP to all three people who passed away; very sad thing.

Larkin lifts Red Wings past Leafs in OT
December 6, 2018
By The Associated Press

TORONTO (AP) Dylan Larkin scored on a breakaway at 2:48 of overtime and the Detroit Red Wings beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-4 on Thursday night after blowing a three-goal lead in the third period.

Larkin beat Garret Sparks between the pads to snap Toronto's five-game winning streak.

Gustav Nyquist set up the winner, and finished a goal and two assists. Mike Green had a goal and an assist, Jonathan Ericsson and Luke Glendening also scored, Larkin had an assist and former Maple Leafs goalie Jonathan Bernier stopped 27 shots.

William Nylander suited up for his first game since coming to terms with Toronto on a new six-year, $45 million contract over the weekend. The 22-year-old winger got a mostly warm reception when he stepped on the ice for his first shift, and started on a line with Auston Matthews and Patrick Marleau before getting benched midway through the third period.

Marcel Dionne was the previous fastest at 1,215 games.

Christian Fischer and Lawson Crouse scored for Arizona.

LIGHTNING 3, BRUINS 2

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Mathieu Joseph and Anthony Cirelli scored early in the third period and Tampa Bay beat Boston for its fifth consecutive victory.

After Joseph scored at 2:40, Cirelli put home a short-handed backhand 1:23 later to make it 3-1.

Boston pulled to 3-2 on David Krejci's goal with 1:45 remaining.

Tweet of the Day
?The gist of the conversation was more along the lines of just a friend reaching out to another friend, but as far as that concerns of him helping us out, or different things like that, anytime that you can have a coach of his caliber that wants to be around and be able to be an extra set of eyes, has a great vision for offense but also just football in general.

Those are things that when you have some rare friendships like I?ve been fortunate to form in this profession, you want to be able to, No. 1 be supportive of your buddy, but No. 2 if it?s something that can help you improve as a team, if somebody wanted to do that, we?re always looking for ways to do that.?
Sean McVay, talking about Kliff Kingsbury

Friday?s List of 13: Some college knowledge??..

Request for college basketball fans: If you know of an impact transfer who is going to become eligible this month, please e-mail his name/school to me and we?ll post it for everyone?s benefit, because not every school?s semester ends at the same time.

I have two right now:
Butler- Tucker
Western Kentucky- Bearden.

These two teams will be helped because these kids can play now. Adds some depth and increases the talent level.

For today, I?m looking at college basketball conferences so far this season:

13) Big X:
? Kansas (schedule #10)/Texas Tech (schedule #339) haven?t lost yet
? Iowa State is 7-2 but has been missing four guys for various reasons; two of those guys came back two games ago. Cyclones? bench minutes are #345, but depth is on the way.
? West Virginia is 5-3, has very young guards, and I?m not sure how they get a lot better, unless those young guards suddenly become good young guards.
? Texas is 5-3, losing at home to Radford/VCU. This is Shaka Smart?s 4th year at Texas- his teams at Texas have played tempo #306-212-316-194.

When he was at VCU, Smart?s teams played tempo #69-156-173-91-22-70. Why the difference, other than pressing/trapping is hard unless your players are better athletes than your opponents.

12) Big 14:
? They?re playing 20 conference games now, so teams play two games in December.
? Five teams started conference play 2-0; five started 0-2.
? Illinois is 2-7, the only team under .500
? Seven Big 14 teams are in KenPom.com?s top 30
? Nebraska, Northwestern are two most experienced teams in league.

11) ACC:
? Duke is #343 in experience, which is why college hoop handicapping has become so difficult, weighing talent against experience. I want Duke to play Nevada in March.
? Virginia is only unbeaten team in the league.
? Pitt was 7-1 before losing at home to Niagara; whoops- they start three freshmen.
? Louisville is 6-2 vs schedule #86 in Chris Mack?s first season; great job so far.
? ACC has eight teams in the top 32
? Miami lost last four games, with three losses by 4 or fewer points.

10) SEC:
? Auburn/Tennessee are two highest-rated teams, a change from normal.
? Kentucky is 7-1 vs schedule #319; they lost 118-84 to Duke- best team they?ve beaten is #71 NC-Greensboro.
? South Carolina was in Final Four two years ago; they?re 21-20 since. Not good.
? Texas A&M is 3-4 vs schedule #204; they?re experience team #274, Could be a down year.
? Vanderbilt lost its star freshman PG Darius Garland for the season (knee)

9) Big East:

? St John?s is 8-0 vs schedule #322; how good are they?
? Georgetown is 7-1 vs schedule #304; same question.
? Only four Big East teams are listed in the top 50.
? Creighton has made 45.8% of its 3?s (#2) so far this season.
? If you were wondering, Indiana State (48.8%) is #1
? Villanova is playing 5th-slowest tempo in country so far.

8) Pac-12:
? Only one team ranked in top 40 and Oregon is only 4-3.
? USC is 0-3 vs top 70 teams; their five wins are vs teams ranked #198 or lower.
? Washington is #1 in country in minutes continuity; they?re 6-3 with two top 10 losses (Auburn/Gonzaga).
? UCLA is 6-2 vs schedule #229; they?re #351 in experience, with two key freshmen out for year with injuries. Best team they?ve beaten so far is #122 LMU.
? Arizona State is 7-0 vs schedule #282, but they were 12-0 in pre-conference play LY, and wound up 20-12.

7) AAC:
? 4 of the slowest 15 tempos in America are teams in the AAC.
? Temple is 7-2 vs schedule #155 in Fran Dunphy?s last season as head coach.
? Central Florida is 6-2, with two losses by total of 3 points.
? Wichita State is 4-3 vs schedule #112; they?re a total rebuild (#343 in MC).
? Memphis is 4-4 vs schedule #54; Tigers start two freshmen, three seniors. Better beat the Tigers now; Penny Hardaway is going to dominate recruiting in Memphis, which will put them in the top 25 sooner rather than later.

6) WCC:
? #8-rated conference right now; they were 14th three years ago, #12 LY.
? Gonzaga is to the WCC what UNLV was to the Big West 30 years ago; huge fish in a small pond that carries the league?s banner on national stage.
? San Diego beat San Diego State, USF pounded Cal Wednesday; middle of pack in this league has improved a lot, but St Mary?s is a bit down.
? LMU is playing pack-line defense like Virginia and it is working- they?re 9-1.
? If BYU jumps into a league for football reasons, who replaces them in WCC? Hawai?i?

5) Mountain West:
? Nevada is 8-0 and starts five 5th-year seniors; will the coach be back next year?
? Wolf Pack is only team in MW in top 60; its a one-bid league, unless someone beats Nevada in the conference tournament.
? Fresno State is #17 experience team that is probably 2nd-best team in league; they?re 6-2 and start three seniors, two juniors.
? Boise State is 2-5, with losses to Idaho State/Drake; could be a down year, after winning 20+ games the last six years.
? UNLV is turning the ball over 24.4% of time and shooting 27.7% on the arc, which is why they?re 4-3 vs schedule #324- their first road game is Saturday at Illinois.

4) Atlantic 14:
? League was #10 LY and is #10 this year, their lowest ranks since 2007.
? A-14 is down right now: #70 Davidson is their highest-rated team.
? Saint Louis was touted this year, but they?re turning ball over 21.7% of time and making only 29.9% of their 3?s. Despite that, they?re 6-2 vs schedule #217.
? VCU has had six coaches since 2002, and no losing records. Big fish, smallish pond, and no football to take resources away from basketball.
? LaSalle changed coaches but change isn?t always positive; they?re 0-9 this season, with losses to Lafayette, Bucknell, Drexel, Grand Canyon- they wouldn?t be the best team in the freakin? Patriot League.

3) MAC:
? Buffalo is legitimately good; they won at West Virginia, are #42 experience team.
? Toledo is only other MAC team in top 100, so its likely another one-bid year.
? Rockets are 8-1 and making 41.5% of their 3?s; they?re experience team #81.
? You look at Kent State?s 7-1 record, then you look at schedule #343- no thanks.
? Western Michigan is 4-4 vs schedule #314; they?re turning ball over 22.9% of time and making 29.5% of their 3?s, not a good combination.
? Bowling Green has one winning season since 2010; their coach that year was fired because of an incident in a bar, where the coach was drunk and being a jerk. That coach is now at New Mexico State and his team is 7-1- some schools would?ve built the guy his own private bar.

2) Missouri Valley;
? Defections have crippled this league; Wichita State-Creighton were difference-makers.
? Loyola-Chi is their only top 90 team, and they?ve lost three of last four games.
? Evansville?s new coach is former NBA player Walter McCarty; Purple Aces are trying to play faster- they?ll be interesting to follow the next couple years.
? Drake is experience team #116, but #304 in MC, so they?ve been cobbled together by transfers. Bulldogs are also on their third coach in three years, which doesn?t help, but they?re 5-1 so far this season.
? Northern Iowa won 184 games from 2009-16, but they?re 33-37 the last 2+ seasons, so the coach?s seat has to be getting a little warm.

1) Ivy:
? Yale won at Miami, beat Cal, lost in OT at Memphis; their eFG% is #5 in country.
? Harvard is 4-4 vs schedule #28, but they also lost at #274 Siena.
? Columbia is 0-6 vs D-I teams, vs schedule #329. Could be a long winter.
? Penn Quakers are 7-2, are experience team #63- they start two juniors, two seniors.
? Cornell is #34 experience team, lost by only 8 at Syracuse- did Boeheim take it easy on the Big Red because his son plays for Cornell? (No, he didn?t)

A Wild trend in Edmonton highlights this weekend's NHL betting predictions and picks
Monty Andrews

Visits to Edmonton have been quite beneficial for the Minnesota Wild ? not to mention bettors who put their faith in them. Their latest showdown in the Alberta capital highlights an action-packed three-day schedule that includes a faceoff between two teams that have seen plenty of second-period goals, a team from the Sunshine State that can't seem to hold a lead, and an Original Six pairing that has been one-sided in recent years. Here's a breakdown of the key games and trends to monitor this weekend:

One Wild Trend

The Minnesota Wild have been pretty good for a while now but can't seem to get over the hump. Perhaps more games in Edmonton would do the trick. The Wild look to extend one of the most incredible road trends in the league as they head to Rogers Place for a Friday showdown with the Oilers. Minnesota comes into the game having won 14 of its previous 16 visits to Edmonton while holding the Oilers to two or fewer goals 12 times over that span. Oddsmakers have the Oilers as ever-so-slight -115 favorites ? and bettors should take advantage by leaning toward the visitors here.

Don't Miss Period 2

If you can only watch one period of Saturday's encounter between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Ottawa Senators, make sure it's the middle one. Both teams rank inside the top-12 in goals scored in the second period entering Thursday night, with Ottawa at 33 goals and the Penguins close behind at 31. But they've also hemorrhaged scoring in the middle frame, with the Senators having allowed a league-high 41 goals and Pittsburgh ranked fifth-worst at 36. Bettors might want to consider taking the second period as the highest-scoring stanza of the game, given the prevailing trends for both teams.

Lead? What Lead?

You can forgive Florida Panthers fans and bettors for being frustrated with the team's performance to date. The Panthers enter the weekend having been downright dreadful when leading after one period, with just two victories against two regulation losses and five extra-time defeats. That 22.2-percent win rate is far and away the worst in the NHL heading into Saturday's meeting with the New York Rangers. And while they might not be "fortunate" enough to lead after one period in that one, it's certainly a trend that bears monitoring until the Panthers find a way to reverse their fortunes.

Montreal Massacred

Original Six matchups are always a treat ? but Montreal Canadiens fans might not agree with that assertion when games against the Chicago Blackhawks are involved. The Canadiens will be looking to build on a 2-0 victory over the Blackhawks from their previous meeting Nov. 6 of last season, a triumph that ended Chicago's eight-game winning streak in the head-to-head series. Even with the win, Montreal continued its run of poor offensive efforts against the Blackhawks, having scored just 15 goals in their previous nine meetings. Consider the Blackhawks and the under, a combo that has connected six times over that span.

Goalie Profile

Connor Hellebuyck, Winnipeg Jets: While the Jets remain one of the most well-rounded teams in the NHL, they could certainly use some improvement in goal, where Hellebuyck hasn't been able to replicate the success enjoyed last season. Hellebuyck enters Friday's game against the St. Louis Blues boasting a 2.97 goals-against average and .904 save percentage, well below his numbers from last season (2.36, .924) ? and while his performance hasn't cost the Jets so far, they'll need him to be sharper if they hope to cash in on their +1,300 odds of winning the Cup. On the plus side, Winnipeg has been a red-hot over play of late, going 7-1-1 O/U in its last nine.

Injury Update

The Carolina Hurricanes are on the hunt for more offense ? and it doesn't help that they'll be without one of their best two-way forwards for Friday's game against the host Anaheim Ducks. Center Jordan Staal suffered a concussion in the third period of Wednesday's 5-1 loss to the San Jose Sharks and is out indefinitely. And while Staal's absence won't make or break Carolina's offensive fortunes ? he has just 11 points on the year ? the Hurricanes are much better off when he's involved, having gone 6-1-1 SU when he records at least one point. Carolina has just four goals in its past five games, going 1-4-0 over that stretch.

Hat Trick Trends

Road favorites tend to yield better payouts than their home counterparts ? and that has meant a tidy profit for betters who have played the road faves over the past seven days. Entering Thursday, those teams have gone an incredible 13-4-0 SU, good for a 76.5-percent win rate. Road favorites are now converting at close to 57 percent for the season.

Looking for a solid player prop this weekend? Consider taking David Pastrnak to score against Toronto when the Bruins welcome the Maple Leafs to town on Saturday. Pastrnak has 10 goals in 13 career regular-season games vs. the Maple Leafs, and struck five times in the seven-game playoff series between the teams last spring.

The Eastern Conference has become a two-team race in oddsmakers' eyes, with the Maple Leafs and Tampa Bay Lightning both boasting +375 odds to win the Stanley Cup ? the best of any teams in the league. The Nashville Predators own the best odds of any Western Conference team at +650. The defending-champion Washington Capitals are listed at +1,700.

Allen makes 26 saves, Blues beat Jets 1-0
December 7, 2018
By The Associated Press

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) Leon Draisaitl scored twice and Connor McDavid had a goal and three assists, leading the Edmonton Oilers to a 7-2 victory over the Minnesota Wild on Friday night.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Zack Kassian, Alex Chiasson and Darnell Nurse also scored for the Oilers (15-12-2), who won for the fifth time in six games. Draisaitl also had an assist on Nurse's goal in the third period.

Cam Talbot made 31 saves to earn back-to-back victories after dropping his six previous starts.

The Wild (15-12-2) lost for the fifth time in six games. Marcus Foligno and Nino Niederreiter scored, and Alex Stalock made 22 stops in relief of an ineffective Devan Dubnyk.

BLUES 1, JETS 0

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Jake Allen made 26 saves in his first shutout of the season, helping St. Louis to the road win.

Colton Parayko scored for the Blues during a second-period power play. The Jets managed just six shots on goal in the third period.

Allen's last shutout was a 3-0 victory over Dallas on Dec. 7, 2017. He's 8-7-4 in 21 games this season.

Connor Hellebuyck made 25 saves for Jets, who had won four in a row.

Winnipeg was last shut out in its fourth game of the season, a 3-0 loss in Nashville on Oct. 11.

STARS 3, SHARKS 2

DALLAS (AP) - Ben Bishop made a season-high 41 saves, Miro Heiskanen and Brett Ritchie scored in the third period and Dallas beat San Jose for its fourth consecutive victory.

Mattias Janmark also scored. Evander Kane and Logan Couture scored for San Jose.

Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

Six interesting college hoop rivalry games for Saturday:

? Xavier @ Cincinnati (-7)

? Wisconsin @ Marquette (even)

? Creighton @ Nebraska (-6)

? Georgetown @ Syracuse (-11)

? BYU (-3.5) @ Utah

? Pitt @ West Virginia (-11)

**********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind??.

13) With former basketball standout Kevon Looney in town with the Warriors to play the Bucks in Milwaukee Friday night, Milwaukee Hamilton HS held a ceremony at the school Thursday afternoon to retire Looney?s #5 jersey.

A surprising thing happened; the whole Warriors? team showed up- Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Kevin Durant, even coach Steve Kerr??all of them showed up to honor their teammate/friend.

Imagine being a kid at that school and seeing those guys in your gym? Pretty cool.

12) Titans 30, Jaguars 9? Game is 7-2 Tennessee in 2nd quarter; Jaguars have 4th-and-goal on the 2-yard line but instead of kicking a gimme field goal, they go for it with the backup QB and they don?t get it. Titans run next play for a 99-yard TD, and school is out.

I don?t give a rat?s ass about analytics; in these cases, if you?re Jacksonville you have to put points on the board in what was a tight, tense game, especially if you?re a losing team.

I?ll say it this way: the Jaguars tackled with a lot less enthusiasm once that 4th down play failed. Thats a nice way of saying they stopped trying as hard- they quit.

11) Washington Nationals have given out lot of deferred money in the past to pitchers Max Scherzer ($105M of $210M) and Stephen Strasburg ($70M of $175M), but only $10M of Patrick Corbin?s newly-signed $140M contract is deferred money.

10) Of the 353 D-I college basketball teams, 27 are coached by former NBA players.

9) Thru Week 13, best red zone teams, based on points/possession:
Chiefs 5.75, Bengals 5.73, Bills 5.70, Steelers 5.69

Worst red zone teams, based on ppp:
Jets 3.87, 49ers 4.21, Jaguars 4.22, Lions 4.40

8) Most drives that went into red zone this season:
Rams 67, Saints/Chiefs 55, Buccaneers 47

Fewest drives that went into red zone this season:
Cardinals 22, Bills/Dolphins 23, Jaguars 27

7) Three things about NFL officiating that bug me:

a) They call too damn many holding penalties.
b) They call way too many penalties on punts/kickoffs.
c) When they call pass interference, a 2nd official usually also throws a flag, to ?sell the call?

6) Phoenix Suns are first team in the shot clock era (since 1955) to be held under 10 points in the first quarter of consecutive games.

5) Big 14 finished their first round of conference games this week; home favorites were 5-4 vs spread, road favorites were 3-2, making favorites 8-6 vs spread overall.

4) Here is why Washington Wizards will have a hard time trading John Wall: his contract is outrageous.

2019-20: $38,150,000
2019-20: $38,150,000
2020-21: $41,202,000
2021-22: $44,254,000
2022-23: $47,306,000 (player option)

Good luck getting someone to take that contract.

3) DeAndre Jordan was a 45% career free throw shooter before this season; he is shooting 75.8% this year (72-95).

Jordan is in his first year with the Dallas Mavericks, whose shooting coach is Peter Patton, who has been teaching basketball for 20+ years, including studying shooting under San Antonio Spurs? assistant Chip Engelland. Coach Patton deserves a raise.

2) NBA trade:
? Cavaliers re-acquired G Matthew Dellavedova and F John Henson from the Bucks, along with a future 1st and 2nd-round draft pick.
? Milwaukee got veteran PG George Hill, who was with coach Budenholzer in San Antonio; they also got Jason Smith and a 2nd-round draft pick from Washington.
? Wizards acquired Sam Dekker from Cleveland.

1) Best wishes to Redskins? QB Alex Smith, who has an infection in his broken leg following multiple surgeries on the leg last month. Get well soon.

Giroux leads Flyers in 6-2 win vs. Sabres
December 8, 2018
ShareFacebookTwitterDiggMySpace

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) Claude Giroux was nervous about centering the Philadelphia Flyers' top line for the first time in two seasons.

Once he settled in, Giroux guided the Flyers to their most goals in a game in nearly two months. Philadelphia's captain had a goal and three assists Saturday in a 6-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres.

''I'd like to tell you it's like riding a bike, but it's not,'' Giroux said. ''But it turned out great tonight.''

With Sean Couturier out because of a lower-body injury, Giroux moved from right wing to center in Philadelphia's lead group of forwards. He had four points in a game for the first time since an Oct. 14, 2017 win over Washington.

''It's not easy but he's a natural centerman,'' Flyers coach Dave Hakstol said. ''He's our captain and stepped up in a lot of different fashions tonight.''

James van Riemsdyk also moved up to the top line and had a goal and an assist for the Flyers, who opened a five-game road trip with their third win in 10 games.

Ivan Provorov, Wayne Simmonds, Dale Weise and Travis Konecny also scored. Michael Raffl had two assists and Anthony Stolarz made 28 saves.

After scoring twice in the third period to force overtime and earn a point in a 4-3 loss to Columbus on Thursday, the Flyers scored six straight after the Sabres took a 2-0 lead.

Giroux's shorthanded goal gave the Flyers a 3-2 lead early in the third period. Simmonds, Weise and Konecny each scored from close range in a span of less than three minutes to put the game out of reach.

Provorov scored the tying goal midway through the second period. Scott Laughton dug the puck out of the corner to set up the scoring chance.

The six regulation goals were the most the Flyers have scored since a 7-5 win at Ottawa on Oct. 10. Entering the game 15th out of 16 teams in the Eastern Conference with 25 points, this was Philadelphia's first win since hiring general manager Chuck Fletcher on Monday to replace Ron Hextall, who was fired one week earlier.

''There have been a lot of off-ice things that have been happening,'' Giroux said. ''And I think because we have such a tight group in here that we're able to keep playing hockey and keep doing the things we're doing,''

Jack Eichel scored twice for the Sabres, who have lost five straight following a 10-game winning streak. Linus Ullmark stopped 35 shots.

''The streak we were on, that's over. It means nothing now,'' Eichel said. ''Now I think we are losing sight of what made us successful.''

After scoring once in his previous 16 games, Eichel had two goals in the third period of Buffalo's 4-3 overtime loss to Toronto on Tuesday. He followed that with two first-period goals against the Flyers.

The Sabres captain banked a rising shot off the far post for the first goal 4:04 into the game. Eichel then deflected Lawrence Pilut's shot from the point to give the Sabres a 2-0 lead with a little under eight minutes remaining in the period.

Sam Rinehart had an assist on Eichel's first goal, extending his career-best point streak to six games. Pilut's assist was the first NHL point in four games for the rookie defenseman.

The Flyers got on the board 50 seconds later when Giroux won a faceoff and set up van Riemdsdyk's quick wrist shot from the high slot.

NOTES: Sabres G Carter Hutton is day to day with an upper-body injury. Buffalo called up Scott Wedgewood from the minors to back up Ullmark. ... Sabres D Matt Tennyson made his season debut after being called up on Friday. ... Sabres RW Jason Pominville returned after missing two games with an upper-body injury. ... Sabres RW Kyle Okposo played in his 700th NHL game.

Kings tie season high in goals with 5-1 victory over Vegas
December 8, 2018
ShareFacebookTwitterDiggMySpace

LOS ANGELES (AP) Lack of scoring and being ineffective on special teams are a huge reason why Los Angeles is at the bottom of the Western Conference standings. But the Kings broke out of their offensive malaise on Saturday, tying a season high in goals as they defeated the Vegas Golden Knights 5-1.

''It's probably one of our more dominant wins and we actually played a good team here in Vegas, very good team. It was a full 60 minutes,'' said defenseman Drew Doughty, who had an assist. ''When your team does that, you're going to win more hockey games and hopefully we realized that tonight because we need to win more.''

The Kings scored their most goals since a 5-2 victory over Edmonton on Nov. 25. It was only the sixth time in 30 games that they have scored four or more goals. Los Angeles, which has two wins in its last five games, has a league-low 23 points and with 66 goals is last in the league in scoring.

Oscar Lindberg scored for Vegas less than five minutes into the game before Los Angeles got goals from Nikita Scherbak, Matt Luff, Jeff Carter, Derek Forbort and Nate Thompson. Jonathan Quick made 29 saves.

Forbort also had an assist for his second multipoint game of the season, and Jake Muzzin added two assists.

Kings coach Willie Desjardins was pleased with how the team started, but what made him happier was the performance of his specialty teams. They got their first power-play goal in five games and killed all three of Vegas' opportunities. Los Angeles had allowed a power-play goal in five of its last six games coming into Saturday.

The Kings came into the game with the third-worst power play in the league, while the Golden Knights were second in penalty killing.

''I thought our leaders did a great job today. They talked about the power play and penalty killing and we responded with a great effort on the kill today,'' Desjardins said.

Lindberg opened the scoring four minutes into the game when he took a pass from Tomas Nosek in front of the net and slipped it through Quick's legs. Scherbak evened it four minutes later on the power play when his snap shot from just beyond the right faceoff circle beat Marc-Andre Fleury. Scherbak - who scored on his fourth shift with the team - was claimed on waivers from Montreal on Sunday, but his debut was delayed due to work visa problems.

''That's probably one of those moments that is going to stick to my memory for a while, definitely. And that's a great win. We deserved it,'' Scherbak said.

The game was tied at 1 after the first period when the Kings took control with a pair of goals in the second. Luff scored a power-play goal on a one-timer from Brendan Leipsic with less than eight minutes to go. Four minutes later, Carter was credited with his sixth goal of the season on a shot he played off the boards that bounced off the right skate of Vegas defenseman Nate Schmidt and went into the net.

Forbort's shot from near the blue line while Fleury was being screened put the Kings up by three less than three minutes into the third, then Muzzin fed Thompson for a one-timer with less than two minutes remaining.

Fleury stopped 20 shots for the Golden Knights, who had won seven of their last eight.

''You can't turn pucks over to them,'' Schmidt said. ''You can't get into that style game, because that's what they want. They want you to turn a few pucks over coming into the zone and counter. And I thought we fed their attack.''

NOTES: Los Angeles LW Kyle Clifford took a hit to the head from Vegas C Pierre-Edouard Bellemare during the second period and did not return. Clifford came into the game with two goals in the last three games. Desjardins said he thought the hit was not clean and hopes it will be reviewed by the league. ... Quick is 2-2 with a 2.93 goals-against average and .932 save percentage since coming back from a knee injury. ... This was the first of four meetings between Los Angeles and Vegas through Jan. 1.
