Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday

Cardinals 20, Packers 17?14-point underdog Arizona ended lot of Survivor pools with this win; they also ended Mike McCarthy?s tenure as Packers? coach- he was fired before the 4:00 games ended. Green Bay missed a 49-yard FG at the gun, as Packers lost for 5th time in last six games. This was the Cardinals? first win in Wisconsin since 1949- they had lost their last eight visits there.

Green Bay has only one offensive TD in 2nd half of their last three games. Right now, the Packers would draft after Cleveland; who would?ve expected that this summer? Will be very interested to see who this team hires as their next head coach.

Giants 30, Bears 27 OT? An unusual game:
? Chicago gifted the Giants with a defensive TD 0:38 into the game.
? Bears scored a TD, with a defensive lineman carrying the ball.
? Giants ended the first half by making a 57-yard FG.
? Giants took the lead when a WR threw a 49-yard TD pass.
? Bears were down 10 with 1:30 left, but kicked a FG, recovered an onside kick, then tied the game on a pass by a RB at the gun.
? Giants won in OT; they?ve won three of their last four games.
? Seven of last nine Chicago games, last four New Jersey games went over total.

Jaguars 6, Colts 0? Second NFL game this season without a TD scored; other one was also a Jaguar home game (9-6 win over Titans). There was another game with no offensive TD?s scored (Jets-Dolphins) but there was a defensive TD in that game.

Loss snaps a 5-game Indy win streak, 7-game Jacksonville losing skid; Jaguar QB Kessler gets first win as an NFL starter (1-8) after losing all this starts for Cleveland in ?16.

Buccaneers 24, Panthers 17? Carolina loses its 4th game in row; they have one takeaway in those four games. Newton threw four INTs in this game. Panthers are 1-5 on road this year, and they were down 17-0 in third quarter of that game. Carolina is still only game out of second Wild Card spot, if Redskins lose Monday night.

First time in 10 years this season series was split; Buccaneers had 14-yard edge in field position. Bucs have only one giveaway in last two games, after 27 in previous nine games.

Rams 30, Lions 16? Aaron Donald is freakin? awesome; for second game in row, his strip/sack created an LA TD that put them in commanding position. Rams scored 30 points but watching the game, I felt like Detroit has a good defense; two of Rams? three TD drives started in Detroit territory. LA beat spread for only second time in last eight games, running ball for 149 yards.

First time since 1979 Rams won NFC West in consecutive seasons. Five of last six Detroit games stayed under the total; Lions had ball in red zone five times, scored only one TD, three FG?s- very hard to beat the Rams scoring only one TD. Rams are now 9-2-1 vs spread in their last 12 post-bye games.

Ravens 26, Falcons 16? Whats happened to Atlanta?s offense? They gained total of only 131 yards in this game, throwing for only 97. Falcons lost last four games, scoring 16-19-17-16 points- their longest play in this game was 17 yards.

Both teams scored one offensive TD and each team scored a defensive TD.

At this point, Baltimore is the #6 seed in the AFC; Lamar Jackson is now 3-0 as an NFL starter; will Joe Flacco get traded this winter?

Texans 29, Browns 13? Houston won its last nine games after starting season 0-3; they?re 17-10-1 vs spread in last 28 games as a home favorite, and covered five of last six tilts overall.

Cleveland turned ball over four times (-4), after having four giveaways total in their previous five games. Since ?15, Cleveland is 10-19-1 as road underdogs, 2-3-1 this year. Browns outgained Houston in this game while running 22 fewer plays (74-52), but when you?re -4 in turnovers, you lose just about all the time.

Dolphins 21, Bills 17? Buffalo outgained Dolphins 415-175 but lost; they turned ball over three times (-2). Miami is 4-0 when it allows 20 or fewer points, 1-6 when they allow more. Dolphins are still struggling on 3rd down; they?ve converted just 17 of last 63 3rd down plays.

Dolphins are 5-1 at home this season; last two years, Fish are 3-0-2 as home favorites, 2-0-1 this season. Buffalo ran ball for 212-167-198 yards in its last three games. Under is 3-0-1 in Miami?s last four games.

Broncos 24, Bengals 10? I?m told that quarterback is an important position, and it doesn?t look like Cincinnati has one, with Andy Dalton injured. Denver ran ball for 218 yards, had 10-yard edge in field position, sending Bengals to sixth loss in their last seven games. Last four years, Broncos are 9-4-1 as road favorites, 2-0 this year. Last five Denver games stayed under total.

Red Wings' Bertuzzi suspended 2 games for hit on Calvert
December 3, 2018
By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) Detroit forward Tyler Bertuzzi was suspended for two games without pay by the NHL on Monday for his hit on Colorado's Matt Calvert during the weekend.

Bertuzzi was sanctioned for roughing and unsportsmanlike conduct for his hit with 7:15 left in the third period of the Avalanche's 2-0 win Sunday. No penalty was called on the play during the game.

He will miss the Red Wings' games against Tampa Bay on Tuesday and at Toronto on Thursday.

NHL deals with uncertain situations on eve of Seattle vote
December 3, 2018
By The Associated Press

SEA ISLAND, Ga. (AP) Things are going well enough that the NHL is ready to expand to Seattle and the salary cap keeps going up.

But the league is still dealing with a few uncertain situations on the eve of what should be a slam-dunk expansion vote to bring Seattle into the fold.

The Ottawa Senators' downtown arena project is in danger of falling apart, and Arizona Coyotes owner Andrew Barroway is looking for a partner as he tries to secure a long-term home in the desert. Meanwhile, the league would like to begin making plans for a 2020 World Cup of Hockey but has no guarantee of labor peace that would allow such a tournament to take place.

''If we're going to do a World Cup, and do it with the planning necessary, if we don't know by the first of the year or All-Star, then there's no sense in trying to pull off a World Cup for 2020,'' Commissioner Gary Bettman said Monday. ''For the last year and a half, two years, we've been anxious to anchor plans for a World Cup, but for whatever reason the Players' Association hasn't been prepared to do that.''

Bettman updated the Board of Governors on those topics and others before the vote that's expected to award Seattle the league's 32nd franchise. The team would begin play in the 2021-22 season, a year after original plans because arena renovations aren't scheduled to be finished until the fall of 2020.

Seattle expansion and the realignment that comes with it will be announced Tuesday.

Those topics weren't discussed on the first day of the board's annual December meeting that was more about league business. Bettman says the salary cap is projected to go up to roughly $83 million next season, up from the current $79.5 million limit. That's a sign revenues are continuing to rise after the success of the expansion Vegas Golden Knights.

''The fact that the salary cap continues to increase means revenue's continued to increase, which means the state of the sport and the business is very healthy - as healthy as it's ever been,'' Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said. ''And that's good for us, that's good for the players. I think it's good for everybody.''

There isn't yet agreement between the league and the Players' Association that would ensure neither side chooses to terminate the current collective bargaining agreement in September 2020.

''There hasn't been any substantive dialogue on any of the topics that I assume (players) may or may not want to conclude,'' Bettman said. ''They know the time frame. The puck's in their end.''

An NHLPA spokesman said the group did not have anything to add on the topic of potential CBA talks.

Situations with the Senators and Coyotes are league concerns that bear watching with particular attention on Melnyk suing his partner for $700 million in the aftermath of the failing arena development plan. Bettman said he's ''disappointed'' with how things have gone in Ottawa, which ranks 27th in attendance at its rink outside Canada's capital.

''I think for a whole host of reasons (a new downtown arena) would be nice, but Mr. Melnyk has said if he has to make Canadian Tire Centre work, he can do that,'' Bettman said. ''This is a complicated situation, although in its original form, for a lot of reasons, some of which you've read in the complaint that's been filed, the project as originally envisioned unfortunately isn't viable.''

It's unclear what's viable long-term for the Coyotes, who have been fighting for years for a stable arena situation in the Phoenix area. Barroway, who became the Coyotes' sole owner in June 2017, is now looking to sell a portion of the team in what would be another shakeup atop an organization all too used to changes and uncertainty in recent years.

''I think Andy Barroway's made clear that he's looking for a partner,'' Daly said. ''There's been a lot of discussion around that, and I think he's hopeful that something can happen in the near term. ... I think the efforts there will be on getting a new arena. So we have some patience.''

Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

NFL leaders in yards per catch (players with 50+ catches)

1) Mike Evans, Tyreek Hill (both 66 catches for 17.0 ypc)

3) Brandin Cooks 63 catches for 16.3

4) Kenny Golladay 55 catches for 15.5

5) Julio Jones 86 catches for 15.4

6) Robert Woods 64 catches for 15.2

7) TY Hilton 53 catches for 14.8

**********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but??

13) Eagles 28, Redskins 13? Washington lost another QB; McCoy broke his leg, leaving Mark Sanchez as the #1 guy. Now they have to sign another QB to back Sanchez up. Adrian Peterson had a 90-yard TD run in this game, but ran for only 98 yards on nine carries.

With this result, Minnesota moves up to the #6 spot in NFC playoff race.

Eagles are 6-6, and can tie for first place in NFC East with win at Dallas Sunday.

12) With 14:10 left, Eagles led 14-13, scored a TD, then WENT FOR TWO, a genius move; if you make it, you?re two scores ahead. If you don?t make it, it you?re still up seven points and the other team will probably kick the PAT if they score a TD.

This was first time I can remember an NFL team doing this; Minnesota Gophers tried it 4-5 years ago, but didn?t score the two points.

11) Kansas State football coach Bill Snyder retired over the weekend; 79-year old Snyder coached K-State for 27 years, orchestrating one of the greatest rebuilding jobs in college football history? the Wildcats were TERRIBLE when he took over, but under Snyder, Kansas State had a 215-117-1 record, playing in 19 bowls in Snyder?s 27 seasons.

Administrators at K-State were considering dropping football down to I-AA before hiring Snyder, thats how pathetic their program was, but Father Time is unbeaten- Snyder was diagnosed with throat cancer three years ago, and now at age 79, has decided to step down, or it was decided for him. What a great career he had.

10) In the USA Today coaches? poll for the top 25 college football teams, only two coaches didn?t vote for Alabama #1; Pitt?s Pat Narduzzi and Alabama?s Nick Saban.

With the playoff in place, Saban can now use that a motivational tool with his team. Poll itself doesn?t mean a damn thing.

9) 76ers are 9-2 since acquiring Jimmy Butler from Minnesota; Timberwolves are 8-3 since they made the trade, the rare case of a trade helping both teams.

8) Georgia didn?t make the college football playoff, but according to Las Vegas oddsmakers, they would be favored on a neutral field over Oklahoma, Ohio State and Notre Dame.

7) In 1983-84, Wayne Gretzky scored 13 unassisted goals; in the 35 years since then, no one else has scored more than 10 (Teemu Selanne, Rick Nash) in one season.

6) Lot of changes in the coaching profession:
? Chicago Bulls fired Fred Hoiberg, who figures to resurface in college ball.
? Louisville hired Appalachian State coach Scott Satterfield.
? UMass hired Florida State?s OC Walt Bell as its new coach.
? Auburn fired OC Chip Lindsey, who will probably join Les Miles at Kansas.
? Carolina Panthers fired two defensive assistants Monday; Panthers lost their last four games, are 6-6 and still have to play the Saints twice.

5) Wichita State has a basketball player named Ricky Torres who is a fascinating story; the kid dropped out of high school, got his GED later on and wound up going to a junior college at a school called Missouri State-West Plains- he scored 17.2 ppg for a 25-9 team, and caught the attention of Wichita coaches, with Shockers graduating lot of players last spring.

4) Seattle Mariners are taking their team apart; they traded Robinson Cano/Edwin Diaz to the Mets for Jay Bruce, Anthony Swarzak and three prospects, then traded Juan Segura, James Pazos and Juan Nicasio to the Phillies for Carlos Santana and JP Crawford.

Most analysts think the Mariners will trade Santana somewhere else, seeing how he is over 30 and makes $20M a year.

3) Couple of Big 14 conference games last night:
? Michigan State 90, Iowa 68? Hawkeyes are already 0-2 in conference.
? Wisconsin 69, Rutgers 64? Both home teams won, only Spartans covered.

2) Couple of big-name schools lost to low D-I teams in college basketball last night:
? Niagara 71, Pittsburgh 70
? Vermont 72, George Mason 67? Catamounts were a road favorite

1) In 1993, Dennis Rodman played in an NBA game where he grabbed 28 rebounds but didn?t score any points. That doesn?t seem possible, but it happened.

This week's NHL betting predictions and picks: Rantanen powers Avs offense
Monty Andrews

Mikko Rantanen and the high-powered Colorado Avalanche travel to Pittsburgh to take on the disappointing Penguins.

The first full week of December sees a number of teams in surprising spots in the standings including one of the league's most disappointing teams who will try to win a slugfest with a high-scoring opponent ? but things could change in a hurry as the 2018 calendar winds down.

The best Finnish-er in the league

Patrik Laine will look to add to his league-leading goal total on Tuesday when the Winnipeg Jets visit the New York Islanders. Laine has been blanked in his first two games of December after producing an incredible 18 goals in November; the Jets are 8-3-0 when Laine scores at least one goal, and 8-5-2 when he doesn't. Laine, who has 21 goals on the season, would love nothing more than to check the Islanders off his to-do list; they're one of three teams against whom Laine has yet to score in his NHL career, along with the San Jose Sharks and Columbus Blue Jackets.

Avalanche of Goals in Pittsburgh?

Two of the league's top ten teams in goals per game will do battle Tuesday night as Mikko Rantanen and the Colorado Avalanche visit Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Avs earned a 6-3 win in Colorado in their previous meeting last week.

The Avalanche boast the second-ranked offense in the NHL at 3.67 goals per game and employ the most prolific duo in hockey, with Rantanen (45 points) and Nathan MacKinnon (43) ranked first and second in league scoring. Combine that with the scoring exploits of Evgeni Malkin (30 points) and Crosby (29 points), and the Over will be a popular play here.

Ducking Under the Total

The Anaheim Ducks were a sensational Under play for most of the 2017-18 season ? and they continue to reward Under bettors through the beginning of the 2018-19 campaign. The Ducks carry an impressive 10-19 O/U mark into Wednesday's home encounter with the Chicago Blackhawks, who come in having lost six of their past seven games. There should be plenty of action on the Under yet again, with these teams having combined for five or fewer goals in 28 of their previous 36 head-to-head meetings dating back to the end of the 2008-09 season.

Goalie Profile: Martin Jones, San Jose Sharks

We highlighted Anaheim's John Gibson here recently as a starting netminder under fire due to his team's shoddy defense. Sharks counterpart Martin Jones is the exact opposite; while San Jose has done a great job limiting shots (29.1 per game, fifth-fewest in the NHL), Jones has done a dreadful job of stopping them. He comes into the week with a 3.00 goals-against average and an .894 save percentage, ranked 30th and 40th, respectively, among qualified goalies in those categories. It's a big reason why the Sharks are one of only two teams with 30+ points and a negative goal differential. Jones and the Sharks will be hosting the Carolina Hurricanes Wednesday night.
Injury Update

The Arizona Coyotes' sensational penalty kill has been dealt a major blow after forward Michael Grabner suffered a nasty left eye injury courtesy of a high stick from the St. Louis Blues' Sammy Blais. Grabner has been a dynamo when the Coyotes have been a man short so far in 2018-19, racking up a league-leading four shorthanded goals. While Grabner has just six goals and five assists on the season, Arizona will still miss his offense, having gone a red-hot 7-1-1 SU in nine games in which the former first-round pick has recorded at least one point.

Hat Trick Trends

? Totals bettors should keep an eye out for games refereed by Kyle Rehman this week. Rehman has overseen 15 Overs against just eight Unders on the season, with teams combining to produce an average of 6.66 goals in those contests. The road team has been particularly prolific, averaging 3.57 goals in his assignments.

? Road favorites had a field day over the previous seven days worth of games, going a sizzling 12-5-1 SU for a success rate of 66.7 percent. That brings the road faves' overall record on the season to .500 (63-47-14), with the home underdog still a good historical profit play heading into the first full week of December.

Matthews nets 2nd goal late in OT as Maple Leafs edge Sabres
December 5, 2018
By The Associated Press

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) Auston Matthews scored his second goal with three seconds on the clock in overtime, and the Toronto Maple Leafs matched their best start in 84 years with a 4-3 victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday night.

The Maple Leafs won their fifth straight game and improved to 20-8. The only other time it took them just 28 games to reach 20 wins was when they opened the 1934-35 season at 20-6-2.

Patrick Marleau scored with 5:13 remaining in regulation to force overtime, and Kasperi Kapanen set up the decisive goal. Jake Gardiner also scored and Mitchell Marner had an assist to give him 11 in five games. Frederik Andersen stopped 38 shots to win his fourth straight.

Jack Eichel scored twice for Buffalo, which dropped to 0-2-2 since equaling the franchise record with a 10-game winning streak. Sam Reinhart had a goal and an assist.

PENGUINS 6, AVALANCHE 3

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Patric Hornqvist's natural hat trick in the third period powered Pittsburgh past Colorado.

The Avalanche had erased a three-goal deficit to tie the game going into the third when Hornqvist went to work.

His power-play goal 6:11 into the final period gave the Penguins the lead. Hornqvist beat Semyon Varlamov again 1:21 later to push Pittsburgh's advantage to two, and the veteran from Sweden completed the hat trick on his next shift when he fired a wrist shot by Varlamov less than 90 seconds later.

Jake Guentzel, Evgeni Malkin and Derick Brassard also scored for the Penguins, who halted Colorado's 11-game point streak. Kris Letang added two assists, and Casey DeSmith made 42 saves.

Tyson Barrie, Carl Soderberg and Matt Nieto scored for the Avalanche, who had their six-game road win streak snapped.

LIGHTNING 6, RED WINGS 5, SO

DETROIT (AP) - Nikita Kucherov and defenseman Victor Hedman scored in a shootout to give Tampa Bay a comeback win over Detroit.

The Lightning, who have won seven of eight, erased a 5-3 deficit in the third period and overcame Frans Nielsen's hat trick.

Mathieu Joseph had two goals and an assist for Tampa Bay. Steven Stamkos, J.T. Miller and Cedric Paquette also scored.

Ryan Callahan had two assists and Edward Pasquale made 19 saves to win his NHL debut. He stopped Nielsen and Thomas Vanek in the tiebreaker.

Despite the shootout goal, Kucherov's 10-game point streak came to an end.

Nielsen scored three times for his second career hat trick. Gustav Nyquist scored twice for the Red Wings, plus a shootout goal.

JETS 3, ISLANDERS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Jacob Trouba and Adam Lowry scored 22 seconds apart early in the third period to rally Winnipeg over New York.

Nikolaj Ehlers added an empty-net goal with 2.1 seconds left and Connor Hellebuyck stopped 27 shots as Winnipeg won for the fifth time in six games. The Jets have three straight road wins for the first time this season after completing a sweep of their three-game trip to the New York area.

Anders Lee scored for the Islanders, who have lost three of four.

PANTHERS 5, BRUINS 0

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Roberto Luongo made 33 saves in his 77th career shutout, Mike Hoffman scored twice and Florida blanked Boston.

Luongo, who returned to the lineup after missing five games with a knee injury, passed Ed Belfour and Tony Esposito for sole possession of ninth place on the NHL's shutout list.

Jonathan Huberdeau had a goal and two assists, while Mike Matheson and Evgenii Dadonov also scored. Aleksander Barkov had three assists and Keith Yandle added two.

Jaroslav Halak stopped 39 shots as the Panthers had a season-high 44 shots on goal. The Bruins lost for the third time in four games.

FLAMES 9, BLUE JACKETS 6

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Johnny Gaudreau had two goals and two assists, and Calgary scored five times in the second period to rally past Columbus.

Cam Atkinson netted a hat trick to extend his point streak to 11 games, but the Blue Jackets lost their second straight.

Sean Monahan also had two goals and two assists for Calgary, which scored five straight goals for a 6-4 lead during the second period. Monahan opened that barrage 1:55 into the second, and Elias Lindholm, Matthew Tkachuk, Noah Hanifin and TJ Brodie followed with goals. Tkachuk, Hanifin and Brodie scored in a span of 1:53.

Monahan, Gaudreau and Austin Czarnik each scored in the third period for Calgary.

David Rittich and Mike Smith combined to stop 24 shots for the Flames. Calgary earned a point in its fifth straight game to stay atop the Pacific Division and improved to 17-9-2.

Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 18 of 26 shots before being replaced in the third period by Joonas Korpisalo.

Zach Werenski, Josh Anderson and Nick Foligno also scored for Columbus.

CANADIENS 5, SENATORS 2

MONTREAL (AP) - Max Domi had two goals and an assist and Jonathan Drouin added a goal and two assists as Montreal defeated Ottawa.

Artturi Lehkonen and Brendan Gallagher also scored for the Canadiens, who won for the second time in eight games. Carey Price stopped 28 shots.

Mark Stone and Dylan DeMelo scored for the Senators, whose three-game winning streak was halted. Craig Anderson made 36 saves.

Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

If the NFL Draft was today, the first six picks would be??.

1) 49ers 2-10

2) Raiders 2-10

3) Jets 3-9

4) Cardinals 3-9

5) Lions 4-8

6) Jets 4-8

**********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings??

13) Washington Nationals signed lefty pitcher Patrick Corbin to a 6-year, $140M deal Tuesday; Corbin is 56-54 in his career- he was 14-8 in 2013, then missed the next year with an injury. He was 14-13 in ?17, 11-7 LY. He?s allowed 944 hits in 945.2 IP in his career.

Say this for Corbin; he was smart enough not to go to Philly, whose small ballpark isn?t good for a pitcher?s well-being, or his stats. Same thing for avoiding the American League and the DH.

12) If you?re a free agent starting pitcher, why wouldn?t you sign with an NL team, so you don?t have to face the DH? Wouldn?t your stats automatically be a little better?

Also, if you?ve got a little kid who is just starting to play ball, shouldn?t he bat lefty? You?re two steps closer to first base; there is no advantage to batting right-handed.

11) Urban Meyer, the most humorless person in America, stepped down as Ohio State?s football coach Tuesday and was replaced by Ryan Day, who will make $4.5M a year.

It is hard to believe that Meyer and Les Miles have the same job; both do their jobs well, but Meyer looks like he could have a stroke at any minute, while Miles can say funny things and appears to be an enjoyable person to talk to.

10) USC named former Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury as its new OC; Trojans have a long tradition of great running backs- are they going to run the Air Raid now?

9) Seattle Mariners have traded ten guys in the last 28 days, and it sounds like that number is going to get a lot higher before spring training.

8) Seattle?s baseball team is going in the ashcan for the next couple years, but the city was awarded an NHL expansion franchise Tuesday; the unnamed team will be the NHL?s 32nd franchise and it will begin play in 2021-22.

You can actually wager on what the team will be called; Totems is the current favorite, followed by Emeralds, then Sockeyes, Kraken or Rainiers.

7) Steelers? RB James Conner?s ankle injury is worse than first thought; he won?t be in the lineup for Pittsburgh in this week?s game at Oakland.

6) We mentioned Adrian Peterson had a 90-yard TD run Monday night, but gained only 98 rushing yards for the game; he is only 2nd RB since 1950 to do that, joining Herschel Walker.

5) Joey Chestnut holds the world record for eating shrimp cocktails; he ate 43 of them in eight minutes last year. Not sure who decided that should become a contest, but how is that good for you? I like eating as much as anyone, but speed eating ain?t my thing.

4) Louisville?s football team was 1-11 against the spread this year, the worst record of any team in the country; UConn, New Mexico State and Georgia State were all 2-9-1.

3) 106 undergraduates declared for the NFL Draft last year; as recently as 2012, only 64 kids came out early. This year?s number is expected to be right around 106 again.

2) Former Clemson QB Kelly Bryant, who bolted Clemson as soon as he got benched, transferred to Missouri, so he?ll remain a Tiger. Mizzou graduates QB Drew Lock after this season, so Bryant should step right in and start next year.

1) Providence 100, Boston College 95 OT? This was a really fun game, and underscores the mistake BC made leaving the Big East for the ACC, though we know football was the reason that happened. Regional rivalries like this game should be played twice a year.

This was a hard fought, foul-filled couple of hours; Eagles were 36-45 on charity stripe, Friars were 23-34. Three Providence players fouled out.

Ducks extend win streak to 5, nip Chicago
December 6, 2018
By The Associated Press

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Ondrej Kase scored four minutes into the third period to lift the Anaheim Ducks over the Chicago Blackhawks 4-2 on Wednesday night for their fifth straight win.

Anaheim matched Toronto for the longest active winning streak in the league. Brandon Montour and Daniel Sprong, who was making his Ducks debut, scored 20 seconds apart in the first period, and Jakob Silfverberg added an empty-net goal. John Gibson made 25 saves.

Erik Gustafsson and Alex DeBrincat scored in the second period, and Corey Crawford stopped 28 shots for the Blackhawks, who have dropped five straight and seven of eight.

The Ducks came into the game next-to-last in the NHL in first-period goals but scored a pair in the first 20 minutes for only the third time this season. Montour took a pass from Pontus Aberg near the blue line and fired a 54-foot wrist shot past a screened Crawford for his third of the season less than six minutes in. Sprong, who was acquired in a trade from Pittsburgh on Monday, then beat Crawford top shelf with a shot at a sharp angle.

SHARKS 5, HURRICANES 1

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Timo Meier had a goal and two assists in his return to San Jose's lineup, Martin Jones made 39 saves and the Sharks bounced back from a rough road trip by beating Carolina.

Barclay Goodrow and Tomas Hertl got San Jose started with goals in the first period, captain Joe Pavelski added his team-leading 18th in the second period and Marcus Sorensen scored in the third to give the Sharks a convincing victory.

Lucas Wallmark scored on the power play for the Hurricanes, who have scored just five goals in the past five games, losing four of them. Curtis McElhinney made 18 saves.

The Sharks had been outscored 20-7 in losing the first four games on their recent road trip before salvaging it a bit with a 3-1 win in Montreal. They built on that momentum against the Hurricanes with Kevin Labanc setting up two goals in the first 10:10 and Jones stopping 17 shots in the first.

OILERS 3, BLUES 2, SO

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Connor McDavid scored in the shootout after Oscar Klefbom tied it late in the third period, and Edmonton beat St. Louis.

Klefbom scored with 55.2 seconds remaining to tie the game at 2, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and McDavid scored in the shootout. Nugent-Hopkins also scored in the second period, and Edmonton won for the fourth time in five games.

Cam Talbot made 28 saves, plus two more in the shootout to win for the first time in seven tries dating to Oct. 28.

Ivan Barbashev and Brayden Schenn scored for the Blues, who lost for the fourth time in their last five games. Jake Allen made 34 saves
