Penguins hold off NHL-leading Lightning 4-2

PITTSBURGH (AP) Kris Letang tied Hall of Famer Paul Coffey's franchise record for career goals by a defenseman, Matt Murray stopped 33 shots and the Pittsburgh Penguins held off the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-2 on Wednesday night.

Letang's shot from the right circle in the second period beat Andrei Vasilevskiy for his 12th goal of the season and 108th of his career to pull the five-time All-Star even with Coffey, who set the mark while playing for the Penguins from 1987-92.

Riley Sheahan, Phil Kessel and Sidney Crosby scored during Pittsburgh's first-period outburst. Evgeni Malkin had two assists to become the fifth Russian-born player in NHL history to reach 600 assists. He and Steven Stamkos each drew fighting majors for a tussle early in the third period.

Murray withstood an early barrage by Tampa Bay to hand the Lighting - the highest-scoring team in the NHL - just the fourth regulation loss in their last 25 games. J.T. Miller and Stamkos scored late in the third period to keep the Lighting from being shut out for the first time this season

DALLAS (AP) - Ben Bishop stopped all 30 Buffalo shots, and Jamie Benn had a first-period goal for Dallas.

Bishop made 13 saves in the third period, getting his third shutout this season and 27th of his career.

Linus Ullmark made 26 saves for Buffalo.

Fly Guys Flying High
The Philadelphia Flyers head into Thursday's road game against the Boston Bruins with a season-high five-game winning streak. They have ticked off four straight victories against teams with a winning record record, but this will be their biggest test yet. The Flyers are still just 3-10 over their past 13 games on the road, and they're 2-6 in the past eight in the third game of a 3-in-4 (three games in four days) situation. They'll catch the Bruins at a good time, as they're 1-4 in the past five games overall while going 0-6 in the past six against teams from the Metropolitan Division. The Flyers are a dismal 2-12 in their past 14 treks to Beantown, and they're 8-22 in the past 30 against the B's. The home team has cashed in four straight, too.

Calgary...On Fire
The Calgary Flames have fired to the top of the Pacific Division with an 8-1-2 mark across the past 11 outings, although they certainly haven't done it with a lot of attention. The Flames have posted a 15-4-5 mark at home this season, but they're a respectable 15-9-0 in 24 outings away from home to lead the Western Conference in road victories. Their plus-39 goal differential is also good for second in the NHL behind only the Tampa Bay Lightning (plus-58). The Flames face the Detroit Red Wings at home on Friday, and have a quick turnaround in Edmonton on Saturday night. Head coach Bill Peters will also face his former employer, the Carolina Hurricanes, in a pair of games on Tuesday, Jan. 22 in Calgary, and Sunday, Feb. 3 in Raleigh.

Looking Ahead

Thursday, Jan. 31

N.Y. Rangers-New Jersey: The Rangers hit the tunnel for Newark to battle the Devils. The only thing in their favor is a 4-0 record over the past four playing on a day of rest. They're just 16-37 in their past 53 games dating back to last season and they're 2-5 in the past seven against teams with a losing record. The Devils have not exactly lit the world on fire. They're 6-1 in the past seven against losing teams, but just 3-7 in the past 10 against Metropolitan Division games and 5-12 in the past 17 tries against Eastern Conference foes. The Rangers are just 1-5 in the past six trips to New Jersey, and 1-4 in the past five against the Devils overall. The 'over' is also 6-0-2 in the past eight meetings in Newark, and 5-1-3 in the past nine overall.

Columbus-Winnipeg: Both the Blue Jackets and Jets have some decent trends in their favor. Columbus is 5-1 in the past six against the Central Division, and they're 5-0 in the past five working on a day of rest. However, they are also 3-7 in the past 10 against a team with a winning record. Winnipeg has picked up a victory in five of the past seven, and they're 7-3 in their past 10 tries against Metropolitan Division foes. They're also 4-0 in the past four against winning teams. More importantly, the Jets are not exhausted, and, in fact, they get stronger as the games are bunched together. Winnipeg is 16-5 in the past 21 in the third game of a 3-in-4 situation.

Friday, Feb. 1

Tampa Bay-N.Y. Islanders: When the Islanders lost John Tavares in the offseason free agency sweepstakes to the Toronto Maple Leafs, many figured the Isles would be a lower-division team failing to find much in the way of success. However, that hasn't been the case, as they're sitting atop the difficult Metropolitan Division, although they are just four points from fourth place in the division, too. In any event, this is a battle between the two first-place teams in the Eastern Conference.

The last time the Islanders host the Lightning, they pounded them by a 5-1 score on Jan. 13, a rare lopsided loss for Tampa this season. In the first meeting, the Lightning won at home by a 5-2 score back on Nov. 8 behind All-Star Andrei Vasilevskiy. The first meeting was a push on the total, while the second had a number of 6 1/2 goals, so it cashed 'under'.

Calgary-Washington: The defending champion Capitals are on a seven-game slide (0-5-2), and they'll look to get back on track against the Calgary Flames. The Caps are suffering through their longest skid since the 2013-14, which is the last time they missed the playoffs. Goaltending, defense and a lack of timely goals has been the problem with the Caps, as they have been doubled up 36-18 during the slide. Facing the first-place Flames isn't likely a cure for their ills. Calgary is 8-0-1 across the past 10, as David Rittich and Mike Smith have each protected the cage well. The Flames have also scored three or more goals in 12 consecutive outings dating back to Dec. 29.

Minnesota-Dallas: The Stars are having difficulty on the offensive end, averaging just 1.56 goals across the past nine outings. They were just above that average last time they met the Wild, winning 2-1 in overtime back on Dec. 22 in St. Paul. The Stars dropped the first meeting at home back on Oct. 19 by a 3-1 score. The 'under' has connected in each of the first two meetings, and is 7-0-2 over the past nine, and 11-2-2 across the past 15 games for the Stars.

Saturday, Feb. 2

Montreal-New Jersey: The Canadiens and Devils will meet in matinee action on Sunday. The first meeting didn't end well for the Habs in New Jersey, as the Devils came away with a 5-2 victory behind Keith Kinkaid. Montreal hasn't won in New Jersey since Feb. 27, 2017, and the Habs haven't beaten the Canadiens in regulation since Jan. 20, 2017. The 'under' is 7-3 over the past 10 games heading into their game on Thursday against the Rangers, so remember that angle on Saturday afternoon, too.

Pittsburgh-Toronto: The Penguins will have revenge on their minds when they roll into ScotiaBank Arena in Toronto looking to repay the Leafs. Toronto throttled Pittsburgh 5-0 in the Steel City in the most recent meeting on Nov. 3, as Frederik Andersen shut down the high-powered Pens offense. In fact, both meetings this season have resulted in shutouts, as Matt Murray blanked the Leafs in Toronto in the first meeting on Oct. 18.

Arizona-San Jose: The Coyotes and Sharks will do battle, and San Jose knows that Arizona isn't a pushover anymore. San Jose went down to Arizona and got doubled up by a 6-3 score on Jan. 16 behind backup goalie Aaron Dell. The Sharks also feel flat in the most recent home meeting with the Coyotes back on Dec. 23, a 4-3 win in a shootout by the Dogs. The Sharks managed a 5-3 win in the first mertings on Dec. 8. All three battles this season have resulted in an 'over' result.

Sunday, Feb. 3

Boston-Washington: The Bruins and Capitals will take place in the undercard for New England sports fans on Super Bowl Sunday. Fans of the black and gold hope this nationally-televised game goes better than the last meeting in Beantown, when the Caps came away with a 4-2 win on Jan. 10 behind Braden Holtby. Washington also won 7-0 in the opener back on Oct. 3, as the 'over' was 1-0-1 in the first two meetings.

For the Capitals, they're facing a team they have pushed around for years. The Caps have won a whopping 14 straight meetings against the Bruins dating back to March 29, 2014 with the 'over' going 3-0-1 in the past four meetings, and 5-2-1 in the past eight.

Sanheim scores in OT, Flyers top Bruins for 6th straight

BOSTON (AP) Travis Sanheim scored a power-play goal 2:56 into overtime and the Philadelphia Flyers beat the Boston Bruins 3-2 on Thursday night to extend their season-best winning streak to six.

Sanheim assisted on Oskar Lindblom's tying goal with 9:24 left in the third period, then beat Tuukka Rask with a long wrist shot in the final seconds of a power play after Brad Marchand was sent off for tripping.

Claude Giroux also scored for Philadelphia, and Jakub Voracek had two assists. Carter Hart made 23 saves for the resurgent Flyers. They have won seven of eight to improve to 22-23-6 and took the season series against the Bruins 2-1.

David Pastrnak scored both goals for the Bruins. Rask, out with a concussion since Jan. 19, stopped 38 shots in his return. The Bruins lost their third straight.

RANGERS 4, DEVILS 3

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Mika Zibanejad capped his second career hat trick with the winning goal with 4:36 to play and New York rallied from an early two-goal deficit to beat New Jersey.

Zibanejad also had an assist on Chris Kreider's goal, and linemate Mats Zuccarello had three assists, including the backhand pass that set up Zibanejad's backhand winner. The line had eight points.

Henrik Lundqvist made 19 saves, including a stop on a tip by Brian Boyle after the Devils pulled goalie Keith Kinkaid. Nico Hischier, Marcus Johansson and Egor Yakovlev scored for New Jersey.

JETS 4, BLUE JACKETS 3

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Kyle Connor scored with 1:14 remaining to lift Winnipeg past Columbus.

Winnipeg won its sixth consecutive home game and handed the Blue Jackets their four straight loss overall.

Mark Scheifele scored his team-leading 26th goal of the season for the Jets, with captain Blake Wheeler getting his 54th assist. Mason Appleton and Jack Roslovic also scored, and Jacob Trouba had two assists. Connor Hellebuyck made 28 saves in the opener of a three-game homestand.

Artemi Panarin got his 20th goal and added an assist for Columbus. Josh Anderson had a power-play goal and Oliver Bjorkstrand also scored.

High-flying Bolts vs stout Islanders highlights this weekend's NHL odds and analysis

The Lightning have been the class of the NHL for the majority of the season, leading the league in points thanks in large part to an absurd 3.96 goals-per-game average.

With a host of teams coming off their bye, the next three days will feature a ton of hockey ? and bettors, we have you covered. This weekend's schedule includes the offensively-gifted Lightning facing the hottest goaltending tandem in the league, Phil Kessel looking to finally make an impact against one of his former teams, and the Carolina Hurricanes starting to see their puck luck turn around. Here are the top games, trends and tips for the next three days of puck action:

Offense vs. Defense

The highest-scoring team in the NHL visits the best defensive club in the league when the Tampa Bay Lightning take on the host New York Islanders on Friday night. The Lightning have been the class of the NHL for the majority of the season, leading the league in points thanks in large part to an absurd 3.96 goals-per-game average. But that offensive prowess will be put to the test Friday against an Islanders goaltending duo of Robin Lehner and Thomas Greiss that is limiting opponents to a league-low 2.41 goals per contest. Totals bettors take heed: the Isles are 21-6-1 to the under in their past 28 games overall.

Not-so-Special Teams

The Buffalo Sabres can only hope that flipping the calendar to February will put an end to their demoralizing special teams woes. The Sabres enter Friday's showdown with the visiting Chicago Blackhawks owning the dubious distinction of ranking last in the league in power-play success rate (four percent) and 30th out of 31 teams on the penalty kill (71.4 percent). It's no surprise, then, that Buffalo enters the end of the week having lost nine of 13 to fall to seventh overall in units won (5.13). Chicago comes in with the league's No. 1 power play for the month, having converted 40 percent of its chances.

Ready for a Kessel Run?

Phil Kessel was a polarizing figure during his time in Toronto, but the lovable winger hasn't made nearly the same impact when facing the Maple Leafs in his career. Kessel looks to improve on a dreadful showing vs. Toronto as he and the Pittsburgh Penguins head to Scotiabank Arena for a Saturday night encounter with the Leafs. Bettors considering a player prop might want to steer clear of Kessel, who has just nine goals and five assists in 29 career games against Toronto. He could learn a thing or two from teammate Evgeni Malkin, who has racked up 62 points in 37 games against the Leafs.

Hurricane Relief

The Carolina Hurricanes are finally reaping the benefits of their shot-heavy approach ? though they wouldn't mind a little more luck at the other end of the ice. The Hurricanes welcome the Calgary Flames to Raleigh on Sunday having averaged a robust 3.83 goals per game in January ? more than a goal higher than their season rate (2.78), which ranks among the lowest in the league despite the Hurricanes leading the league in shots per game at 35.8. Unfortunately, they've surrendered 3.33 goals per contest in January despite limiting opponents to 27.9 shots over the month. The over is a strong option in this one.

Goalie Profile

Carey Price, Montreal Canadiens: Is Carey Price all the way back? It's impossible to say, but it's certainly encouraging that he was one of the top netminders in the league in January. The much-maligned netminder posted a 5-3-0 mark with a 1.52 goals-against average, a .953 save percentage and two shutouts for the month, and is a significant reason why the Canadiens have cashed the under in 11 of their previous 12 games overall. Montreal resumes its schedule with four games in a six-night span against New Jersey, Edmonton, Anaheim and Winnipeg; the Canadiens went above the total in their previous game against all four teams.

Injury Update

Shayne Gostisbehere, Philadelphia Flyers: The Flyers have made progress in their Herculean quest to rally for a postseason spot ? and they're doing it without the services of their top offensive defenseman. Shayne Gostisbehere missed his third consecutive game Thursday with a lower-body injury, and it isn't known when he'll be able to return to action. Gostisbehere leads all Flyers blue-liners in points with 20, and while his minus-12 rating is among the worst on the team, Philadelphia is an impressive 9-3-2 SU in games in which "Ghost Bear" earns at least one point. The Flyers enter the weekend having won a season-best six in a row.

Hat Trick Trends

Unders have a slight edge in January heading into the final day of the month, having converted at a 51.6-percent clip over the previous 30 days worth of games. Strangely, overtime games in January have fallen below the total (14) more often than they've finished above it (12). Unders have a 372-364 edge on the overs as of Thursday.

January has also been a strong month for the underdogs, particularly those playing at home. The previous 30 days have seen home 'dogs prevail at a 49-percent rate, well above its 45.6-percent win clip for the season. Underdogs overall have won 46.9 percent of games SU in January, raising the season-to-date average to 43.5 percent.

MmmBop! There's never a bad time for a 90s music reference, and this one is of particular interest to totals bettors. Veteran official Trevor Hanson has provided the best return on investment for over players, earning a whopping 11.06 units thanks to an incredible 30-18-2 O/U record. Teams are averaging nearly 6.5 combined goals in the 50 games he has worked.

Lightning beat Islanders 1-0 in shootout

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) Victor Hedman scored the only goal in the shootout Friday night to lift the Tampa Bay Lightning past the New York Islanders 1-0 after both goaltenders put on a spectacular display through 65 minutes.

Hedman beat Thomas Greiss on the first attempt in the tiebreakere for the league-best Lightning.

The Islanders had a power play at 3:23 of overtime when Tampa Bay's Nikita Kucherov was called for cross-checking but couldn't convert.

Greiss and Tampa Bay's Andrei Vasilevskiy put on a save-for-save clinic before the shootout. Greiss made 41 saves while Vasilevskiy stopped 36 shots. Vasilevskiy turned away three more during the shootout.

The first-place Islanders came in having won of 15 of their last 19 games heading into the All-Star break and their subsequent bye week. New York lost its second straight after a five-game winning streak.

PREDATORS 4, PANTHERS 1

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Viktor Arvidsson scored twice, and Nashville scored all its goals in the third period.

Kevin Fiala and Roman Josi also found the net for the Predators, and Filip Forsberg had three assists. Juuse Saros made 27 saves as the Predators won their third straight game.

Jonathan Huberdeau scored for the Panthers, who had a three-game win streak snapped. Roberto Luongo stopped 22 shots.

Behind 1-0, the Predators scored two goals in a span of 2:15 in the third.

Josi tied the score when his shot from the left circle found the high corner of the net at 5:29.

Arvidsson put the Predators ahead 2-1 when he took a drop pass from Forsberg and fired a shot from the right circle that beat Luongo stick side at 7:44.

CAPITALS 4, FLAMES 3

WASHINGTON (AP) - Evgeny Kuznetsov scored a power-play goal with 57 seconds left, and Washington shook off the absence of suspended star Alex Ovechkin to end a seven-game losing streak.

With Calgary's Mikael Backlund off for holding, Kuznetsov weaved his way into the Flames' zone before firing a wrist shot past goaltender Mike Smith.

An instant after the final horn sounded, several players traded punches before finally skating off the ice.

Ovechkin, who leads the NHL with 37 goals, received a one-game suspension from the league for skipping the All-Star Game. He had played in 214 consecutive games, a streak that began in October 2016.

Calgary trailed 3-2 before Elias Lindholm notched his 22nd goal of the season at 12:01 of the third period. Backlund and Garnet Hathaway also scored for the Flames.

Nic Dowd, Backlund and Dmitrij Jaskin had Washington's other goals.

PENGUINS 5, SENATORS 3

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Bryan Rust and Jake Guentzel each scored twice to lead Pittsburgh past Ottawa.

Teddy Blueger got his first NHL goal and Casey DeSmith stopped 37 shots as the Penguins won their second straight after losing four of their previous five.

Nick Bjugstad also contributed in his Pittsburgh debut hours after he was acquired from Florida, getting an assist on Rust's first goal. He also won the offensive zone faceoff and provided a screen in front on Rust's second goal.

Bobby Ryan and Mikkel Boedker both scored power-play goals, and Matt Duchene scored on a breakaway for the Senators. Anders Nilsson stopped 35 shots as Ottawa, playing for the first time since Jan. 22, lost its third straight.

HURRICANES 5, GOLDEN KNIGHTS 2

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Jordan Martinook scored the go-ahead goal in his first game since signing a contract extension, and Carolina beat Vegas.

Martinook, who signed a two-year, $4 million extension earlier in the week, scored the tiebreaking goal late in the second period as the Hurricanes won for the third time in four games. The goal was Martinook's 11th in 51 games this season, tying his single-season career-high. He scored 11 in 77 games with Arizona in 2016-17.

Nino Niederreiter, Brett Pesce and Sebastian Aho also scored, and Justin Faulk added an empty-netter with 49 seconds remaining. Justin Williams had two assists and Petr Mrazek stopped 22 shots.

Shea Theodore scored twice for Vegas, which has lost five of seven. Maxime Lagace stopped 27 of 31 shots in his first game since being recalled from the American Hockey League.

BLACKHAWKS 7, SABRES 3

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Patrick Kane celebrated his latest homecoming with two goals and two assists to surpass the 900-point plateau in leading Chicago past Buffalo.

Kane capped the victory with an empty-net goal while upping his career total to 903 points, moving ahead of Tony Amonte for 12th place among U.S.-born players. Kane is from south Buffalo and extended his point streak to 10 games, in which he has combined for nine goals and 16 assists.

Connor Murphy sealed the victory by converting Kane's pass into the middle and snapping in a 30-footer through a screen to put Chicago up 5-3 with 8:36 remaining.

Drake Caggiula had a goal and two assists, Brandon Saad scored twice and Duncan Keith also scored. Cam Ward stopped 40 shots and the Blackhawks avoided a brief scare before matching a season-best three-game win streak while coming off a nine-day break.

Jason Pominville and Kyle Okposo scored goals 3:37 apart in cutting Chicago's lead to 4-3 with 12:44 left. Jack Eichel also scored in a game the Sabres trailed 3-0 through the first 26:06 and 4-1 through two periods.
