6) Makai Mason?s story is pretty amazing; it deserves to be re-told.

Three years ago, as a sophomore at Yale, Mason scored 31 points as Ivy League champ Yale upset Baylor 79-75 in the NCAA tournament. Looked like he would lead the Bulldogs to one or two more Ivy titles, but injuries ruined his next two seasons, playing in only one game.

Ivy League teams don?t have redshirt years, so if Mason wanted to play his 5th year of college ball, he had to transfer, and ironically, he chose Baylor, where now that he is healthy, he is leading the Bears to a surprisingly good season.

Mason scored 40 Saturday night and looked a little like Steph Curry doing it, making 9-12 on the arc. Tremendous exhibition of shooting.

5) Don?t listen to all the hype from recruiting services; they don?t know everything.

Ed Reed was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame Saturday night; as a kid, he was a 2-star recruit out of Destrehan, LA. 2-star recruits don?t often make the NFL, much less the Hall of Fame, but Reed excelled at Miami, was a 1st-round pick of the Ravens, and the rest is history.

Reed was such a talented athlete that for a while, he was Destrehan HS?s punter, when one of his teammates was Mike Scifres, who went to on punt in the NFL for 14 years.

4) Sergio Garcia was disqualified from the Saudi International golf tournament for ?purposefully hitting his clubs into the surface of the greens causing damage.? There were reports than Garcia damaged as many as five greens on the course.

3) When you know a team might not be 100% mentally in the game: New Mexico committed a lane violation when Fresno State was taking a foul shot, but Fresno didn?t have anyone in there to rebound, so the kid stepped in early to block out??.no one. Fresno made the next foul shot.

Bruins beat Capitals for first time since 2014

WASHINGTON (AP) Tuukka Rask made 24 saves, David Krejci scored and the Boston Bruins beat the Washington Capitals 1-0 on Sunday to snap a 14-game skid against the defending Stanley Cup champions.

Boston beat Washington for the first time since March 29, 2014. The Bruins snapped a three-game skid and handed the Capitals their eighth loss in nine games.

Rask earned his 253rd victory to take over first place on the Bruins' career list.

Braden Holtby made 37 saves for Washington. He was helpless to stop Krejci's shot on a one-timer after a tic-tac-toe puck movement and a cross-ice pass from Torey Krug midway through the second.

CANADIENS 4, OILERS 3, OT

MONTREAL (AP) - Jonathan Drouin scored at 58 seconds of overtime to lift Montreal past Edmonton.

Drouin scored seconds after Canadiens goalie Carey Price made back-to-back saves on Leon Draisaitl and Darnell Nurse

Jesperi Kotkaniemi pulled Montreal even with 6:25 left in regulation, roofing the puck over Mikko Koskinen from a tight angle after Max Domi battled for the puck behind the net.

Domi and Shea Weber also scored for the Canadiens, and Price made 21 saves. Draisaitl scored twice for Edmonton, and Connor McDavid added a goal. The Oilers have lost five straight.

FLAMES 4, HURRICANES 3

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Derek Ryan, Elias Lindholm and Noah Hanifin scored in their first game back in Carolina, and Calgary won in coach Bill Peters' return to Raleigh.

Peters resigned as Carolina's coach last offseason and took over in Calgary. Shortly after, the Flames acquired Lindholm and Hanifin in a trade, and Ryan signed after three seasons in Carolina.

Stars a boon for Under bettors, and this week's NHL predictions and picks

Despite Tyler Seguin's scoring ability the Dallas Stars have struggled on offense this season, which has been useful to bettors taking the Under on their games.

The Metropolitan Division battle is the best race in the league right now ? and one of the teams in the hunt for top spot has the benefit of two home games to open the week as we break down the NHL betting action. The packed schedule includes the Dallas Stars looking like strong candidates to galvanize their spot atop the "Under" standings, and the Toronto Maple Leafs primed to improve upon their mediocre home record. Here are the top games, betting trends and tips to monitor as the NHL rumbles into the first full week of February.

Three-Headed Monster

Looking for futures odds on your favorite Metropolitan Division contender? As of Monday, it's a complete toss-up, with the Pittsburgh Penguins listed at +240 to win the division title, followed oh-so-closely by the defending-champion Washington Capitals (+260) and the Columbus Blue Jackets (+270). But of those three, only the Capitals have the benefit of playing two early-week home games, as they entertain Vancouver and Colorado. Bettors should consider the Over with all three teams this week, with each of them ranking in the top-8 in goals per game on the season.

Under the Stars

The Dallas Stars were built to be one of the NHL's highest-scoring teams. But they're headed in the opposite direction coming into the week, averaging just 2.56 goals per game ? good for 30th out of 31 teams. The season-long scoring woes have made the Stars an Under bettor's dream, as they sit with a 15-31-6 O/U record ? including an incredible 5-16-4 record away from American Airlines Center. Dallas' rock-solid Under trend looks like it might continue this week, as it hosts the Arizona Coyotes (22-28-1 O/U) before visiting the Nashville Predators (9-14-3 O/U at home).

Home Leaf Home

The Toronto Maple Leafs remain a strong contender to win the Stanley Cup ? but they'll need to be a lot better in their own barn if they have any hope of competing with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Toronto carries a hum-drum 15-11-1 mark at Scotiabank Arena into the week, a major reason why they now find themselves a whopping 15 points back of the Lightning for top spot in the Atlantic Division. But oddsmakers like the Leafs to bounce back Monday, making them a -260 favorite vs. Anaheim. Toronto will host the lowly Ottawa Senators (-3.47 units on the road) on Wednesday.

Rocked Like a Hurricane

If it feels like it's been a while since the Buffalo Sabres have beaten the Carolina Hurricanes, that's because it has. The Hurricanes visit the Sabres on Thursday night having dominated the head-to-head series of late, winning each of the past seven meetings. And that isn't the only trend bettors should pay attention to heading into this one. The teams have combined for six or more goals in each of their previous three meetings, and four of the past five. The second period has been action-packed in this series, producing four or more goals in three of the last five tilts.

Goalie Profile: Carter Hart, Philadelphia Flyers

It has been a great stretch for Hart, who has emerged as the goaltending savior the Flyers haven't had in a while. The 20-year-old rookie has reeled off six consecutive victories despite facing 35 or more shots four times in that span. The 2016 second-round pick has a 2.58 goals-against average and a .921 save percentage on the season, and is well-positioned to improve on those rate stats this week. Philadelphia hosts a Vancouver team Monday that ranks 18th in the league in goals scored before tangling with an L.A. Kings roster that averages a league-low 2.25 goals per game.

Injury Update: Dylan Larkin, Detroit Red Wings

Being a Red Wings fan or bettor these days is an exercise in frustration and patience ? and both groups will be exposed to a little more of that thanks to an injury to Larkin. The Red Wings' most dangerous offensive player is expected to miss the next 1-2 weeks with a strained oblique, leaving Detroit scrambling to replace his offense. The 22-year-old Michigan native had missed just two games in his first three seasons prior to the injury; he leads the Red Wings in goals (22) and points (49), with Detroit having gone 16-14-7 in games in which he records at least one point.

Hat Trick Trends

Road teams reigned supreme in the return from the All-Star Break. The visitors posted a stunning 18-12-4 SU record over the previous seven days, good for a 52.9-percent success rate that returned a tidy profit for road team bettors. Visiting teams have now converted SU at a 47.9-percent clip over the previous 30 days.

Under bettors also made bank over the past week, with 18 games finishing below the total (54.6 percent) compared to 15 going over. That's consistent with how games have finished over the past month, with the under converting at a 54.4-percent rate. Under also rules the season results, though just barely (50.7 percent).

We referenced the Maple Leafs' home woes earlier ? and those problems at Scotiabank Arena are a major reason why the team is at -0.13 units for the season. Toronto is -7.41 at home, compared to a +7.28 road mark that ranks fifth in the league. Is the latter sustainable? We'll find out, with the Leafs playing six of their next eight on the road.

Flyers top Canucks, notch 8th straight win

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Carter Hart made 41 saves, Sean Couturier and Jakub Voracek scored, and the Philadelphia Flyers beat the Vancouver Canucks 2-1 on Monday night for their eighth straight victory.

The Flyers pulled within five points of a playoff spot after having the NHL's worst record on Jan. 9 - they were 14 points out of a postseason berth during the All-Star break just over a week ago. Philadelphia also became the first NHL expansion club to reach 2,000 victories

Hart, Philadelphia's 20-year-old rookie, won his seventh straight start with another solid game. His best stop came with 5 + minutes left when he dived with his right arm to deny Nikolay Goldobin from a sharp angle on a power play.

Brock Boeser scored for Vancouver, which was playing the first of three games in four nights.

The game was delayed for several minutes midway through the third period after Vancouver's Alexander Edler went down with a scary-looking injury. Edler's skate got caught in Voracek's stick, causing Edler to land face-first on the ice. With a bloodied face and dazed look, a conscious Edler was wheeled off on a stretcher while sitting upright.

KINGS 4, RANGERS 3, OT

NEW YORK (AP) - Tyler Toffoli scored 25 seconds into overtime and Los Angeles rallied to beat New York.

Toffoli's ninth goal of the season came moments after the Rangers' Mika Zibanejad rang the puck off the post behind Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick. Toffoli was mobbed by his teammates as Rangers netminder Henrik Lundqvist skated away in disgust.

Adrian Kempe scored twice and Anze Kopitar added a goal for the Kings, who scored in the last minute of regulation and the first minute of overtime. Quick finished with 24 saves.

Zibanejad, Chris Kreider and Adam McQuaid scored for the Rangers. Lundqvist made 26 saves.

MAPLE LEAFS 6, DUCKS 1

TORONTO (AP) - Andreas Johnsson had two goals and two assists, Jake Muzzin added a goal and two assists and Toronto routed Anaheim.

William Nylander and John Tavares each had a goal and an assist, and Connor Brown also scored for Toronto, which has won three in a row at Scotiabank Arena after dropping six of their previous seven home games.

Frederik Andersen made 24 saves for the Leafs. Zach Hyman added two assists.

Rickard Rakell scored for Anaheim. John Gibson made 30 saves before being pulled in favor of Chad Johnson after Toronto scored its fifth goal.

STARS 5, COYOTES 4

DALLAS (AP) - Tyler Seguin scored a tiebreaking goal with 7:32 to play, and Dallas scored four goals in a wild third period on the way to win over Arizona.

Roope Hintz, John Klingberg, Radek Faksa and Mattias Janmark also scored for the Stars. Ben Bishop made 39 saves as Dallas extended its winning streak to a season-best five games.

Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Kevin Connauton, Vinnie Hinostroza and Alex Galchenyuk scored for Arizona. Darcy Kuemper finished with 24 saves.

9) All the AAF games will be televised this season, either on NFL Network, CBS Sports Network, Turner Sports or B-R Live (I?m not really sure what that is).

8) Bill Walton told a great story on TV Saturday about way back in the mid-60?s, when freshmen were ineligible to play college basketball, so they had freshman teams.

UCLA?s varsity had won the national title the year before, but now they had a freshman named Lew Alcindor; the freshman team beat the defending national champs by 20 in a preseason exhibition game. UCLA?s fans were stunned.

After the game in the locker room, coach John Wooden looked at his current varsity and said, ?Looks like we?ll have a pretty good team next year.?

Bruins didn?t win that year (Texas Western did), but then they won the next seven national titles.

7) Bob Valvano brought up an interesting point Sunday night; Super Bowl commercials aren?t funny anymore, because advertisers are terrified of offending someone in our more politically correct world. To be funny is to be edgy, but if you?re edgy SOMEONE will get offended, and then you lose that someone?s business. No one wants to lose business.

Our society, to a large extent, has lost its sense of humor. Or, to paraphrase what Michael Jordan once said, ?(Fill in demographic) buy sneakers, too.?

6) Big East is a two-horse race this year:

Villanova is 9-0, Marquette is 8-1 in conference games.

No one else in the Big East is at .500 in conference; St John?s, Creighton, Georgetown are all 4-5 in league games. Butler, Seton Hall and DePaul are 4-6. Providence is 3-6, Xavier 3-7.

Any game between teams in the bottom 8 is interesting; Marquette has more skilled shooters than anyone else. Villanova seems to be improving a lot as the season goes on.

5) We have a minor league baseball team here in the Albany area, the Tri-City Valley Cats, who play games at Hudson Valley CC in a nice ballpark. Valley Cats? manager this year will be Ozney Guillen, son of the former White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen.

Valley Cats are a Class A affiliate of the Astros, playing in the NY-Penn League.

4) Wednesday of this week is National Signing Day for college football, then Thursday is the NBA trade deadline, so there will be lot of news this week made off the field/court.
