Bergeron scores 2 in 1,000th game, Bruins beat Islanders 3-1
February 5, 2019
By The Associated Press

BOSTON (AP) Patrice Bergeron celebrated his 1,000th career game with a pair of goals as the Boston Bruins beat the New York Islanders 3-1 on Tuesday night.

Bergeron, just the fifth player in Bruins' history to play 1,000 games with the club, scored early in the second period and added an empty-netter in the final minute.

Peter Cehlarik also scored and Tuukka Rask stopped 28 shots for the Bruins, who handed the Metropolitan Division-leading Islanders their first regulation loss in more than three weeks.

Brad Marchand and David Pastrnak assisted on both of Bergeron's goals.

Jordan Eberle scored for the Islanders and Robin Lehner finished with 24 saves.

CAPITALS 3, CANUCKS 2

WASHINGTON (AP) - T.J. Oshie scored as part of a dominant performance, Braden Holtby made 30 saves and stopped a penalty shot, and Washington beat Vancouver in Jay Beagle's return to his old home arena.

Alex Ovechkin assisted on Oshie's 16th goal of the season to pick up his 1,180th career point and become NHL's career scoring leader among Russian players. Ovechkin went into the game tied atop that list with former teammate Sergei Fedorov.

Holtby made 13 saves and denied Bo Horvat on a penalty shot in a busy second period to help the struggling Capitals pick up two important points. Holtby was run over by Horvat prior to Elias Pettersson's goal with 7.6 seconds remaining and was attended to by a team athletic trainer before finishing the game.

Brett Connolly and Jakub Vrana scored third-period goals for the defending Stanley Cup champions, who had lost eight of their previous nine games.

SHARKS 3, JETS 2, OT

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Joe Pavelski scored a short-handed goal 2:49 into overtime to lead San Jose over Winnipeg.

Pavelski's 29th goal of the season came on a 2-on-1 with Brent Burns after a Winnipeg turnover, giving the Sharks a three-game winning streak to start off a four-game trip.

Logan Couture and Marcus Sorensen also scored for San Jose. Kevin Labanc had a pair of assists and Pavelski also had an assist. Martin Jones stopped 25 shots.

Blake Wheeler and Mathieu Perreault scored for the Jets, who had their three-game winning streak snapped and their run of seven consecutive victories at home ended. Connor Hellebuyck made 35 saves.

HURRICANES 4, PENGUINS 0

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Curtis McElhinney stopped 23 shots, Brett Pesce and Jordan Martinook scored from way out, and Michael Ferland and Andrei Svechnikov poured it on late as Carolina began a pivotal five-game trip with a victory over Pittsburgh.

McElhinney collected his first shutout of the season and ninth of his 11-year career by stuffing Jared McCann and Jake Guentzel with sprawling saves in the first period and never letting up as the Hurricanes picked up two big points as they try to stay in the mix for their first playoff berth in nearly a decade.

Matt Murray made 28 saves for the Penguins but lost for the third time in four starts since the All-Star break. Pittsburgh struggled to generate any consistent offensive pressure against McElhinney while playing without injured star Evgeni Malkin, who missed his third consecutive game with an upper-body injury.

GOLDEN KNIGHTS 3, LIGHTNING 2, SO

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Alex Tuch scored the only goal in a shootout and Vegas halted a four-game losing streak with a victory over Tampa Bay.

Vegas got goals from Cody Eakin and Valentin Zykov in regulation. Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 24 shots.

Brayden Point and Mathieu Joseph scored for the NHL-leading Lightning, and Andrei Vasilevskiy made 35 saves. Steven Stamkos had two assists to give him 14 points over his last 10 games.

KINGS 5, DEVILS 1

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Tyler Toffoli scored twice in 35 seconds early in the third period to spark Los Angeles.

Toffoli, who had the overtime winner Monday against the Rangers, helped send the Kings to their third win in four games. Adrian Kempe, Dion Phaneuf and Ilya Kovalchuk also scored for Los Angeles. Jack Campbell made 29 saves and Anze Kopitar had three assists.

Pavel Zacha scored for New Jersey, and Keith Kinkaid stopped 20 shots.

CANADIENS 4, DUCKS 1

MONTREAL (AP) - Brendan Gallagher had two goals and an assist, and Montreal beat slumping Anaheim.

Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Phillip Danault also scored for the Canadiens, who improved to 7-1-1 in their last nine games. Jonathan Drouin had three assists. Carey Price made 24 saves for his sixth straight victory - his longest winning streak since the 2016-17 season.

Captain Ryan Getzlaf scored for the Ducks, who have lost five in a row. Chad Johnson stopped 28 shots.

PREDATORS 5, COYOTES 2

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Craig Smith, Filip Forsberg and Ryan Ellis scored in the second period, and Nashville beat Arizona to snap a three-game skid at home.

Pekka Rinne made 24 saves as Nashville avoided being swept by Arizona this season, though the Coyotes did take the series 2-1.

Roman Josi scored an empty-net goal with 2:50 left and had two assists, Calle Jarnkrok had a goal, and Ellis also had an assist.

SABRES 5, WILD 4, SO

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Sam Reinhart scored the lone shootout goal and Buffalo won for just the third time in nine games.

Reinhart also had a goal and an assist in regulation for the Sabres, who led by two in the second period before giving up Zach Parise's tying goal with 1:37 left in the third. Linus Ullmark stopped 41 shots through overtime in a game Buffalo never trailed.

Jack Eichel set up two goals and C.J. Smith also scored. Buffalo's once anemic power-play unit converted both opportunities on goals from Evan Rodrigues and Rasmus Dahlin.

BLACKHAWKS 6, OILERS 2

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - Patrick Kane had a goal and an assist, and Chicago scored four goals in less than a three-minute span of the third period.

Erik Gustafsson, John Hayden, Dylan Strome, Drake Caggiula and Dominik Kahun also scored for the Blackhawks, who have won five straight. Cam Ward stopped 25 shots.

Leon Draisaitl scored both goals for Edmonton, which matched a season-high with its sixth-straight loss. Cam Talbot turned aside 23 of 27 shots before giving way to Mikko Koskinen, who made six saves.

BLUE JACKETS 6, AVALANCHE 3

DENVER (AP) - Josh Anderson scored the tiebreaking goal with 9:31 remaining, Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 27 shots and Columbus snapped a five-game skid by beating Colorado.

Pierre-Luc Dubois scored twice for Columbus, including an empty-netter. Oliver Bjorkstrand, Cam Atkinson and Alexander Wennberg also had goals.

Nikita Zadorov, Samuel Girard and defensemen Erik Johnson scored for Colorado, which dropped its fourth straight and fell to 3-12-2 since Dec. 21.

BLUES 3, PANTHERS 2

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Vince Dunn scored with 3:53 left to cap a third-period rally from a two-goal deficit and lift St. Louis over Florida.

Aleksander Barkov put Florida ahead 2-0 with a goal 30 seconds into the final period, but Colton Parayko, Ryan O'Reilly and Dunn brought St. Louis flying back for its third straight win. Dunn beat James Reimer with a shot from the slot.

Jordan Binnington stopped 22 shots for St. Louis. Henrik Borgstrom also scored for Florida, and Reimer made 31 saves.

Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

? Happy birthday to the great Hank Aaron, who turned 85 Tuesday.

? Pacers 136, Lakers 94? Lebron James? worst loss in the NBA.

? Illinois 79, Michigan State 74? Third straight loss for the Spartans.

? St John?s 70, Marquette 69? Very big win for Chris Mullin?s team.

? Kansas State 74, Kansas 67? This was the Wildcats? Super Bowl.

? New Mexico 83, San Diego State 70? Aztecs are 1-4 on Mountain West road.

**********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings??.

13) Happy New Year to any Chinese friends we may have reading this: 2019 is Year of the Pig. This is from chinesenewyear.net:

?The Pig is the twelfth of all zodiac animals. According to one myth, the Jade Emperor said the order would be decided by the order in which they arrived to his party. Pig was late because he overslept. Another story says that a wolf destroyed his house. He had to rebuild his home before he could set off. When he arrived, he was the last one and could only take twelfth place.?

12) Looks like the bubble for the Field of 68 in March isn?t going to be very strong; Indiana just lost seven games in a row, and they?re still hanging on to one of the play-in spots.

Nebraska has been awful recently, losing their last five games; they?re 3-8 in the Big 14 and they?re not even listed as a 10-seed, not even a play-in team. They?re not a good team.

St John?s lost five of its last eight games, losing by 30 at Duke, but they?re an 11-seed.

A lot of this will play itself out, but the quality of college basketball has dropped a lot the last few years? just not as many real good teams, even with the big boys poaching role players from low major schools. Too many kids leave school early, hoping to get to the NBA, but they wind up in the G-League or in Europe. Staying in school would help them, and would help college ball.

11) Washington is the best team in the Pac-12; right now, they?re listed as an 8-seed, which means they probably don?t get out of the first weekend, if they even win a game. The Pac-12 is having a terrible season, in large part because they have a ton of inexperienced players.

10) Washington Wizards? star John Wall ruptured an achilles tendon, is out for a year; he last played Dec 26, had one procedure Jan 8 for a lesser achilles injury, then fell in his home and thats when his achilles tendon ruptured.

Wall has four years left on his contract after this year; he is scheduled to make $169.2M during those four years. No pressure on the surgeon who fixes his Achilles.

9) Michigan State loses G Joshua Langford for the season with an ankle injury; he was averaging 28.6 mpg, scoring 15.0 ppg, 2.3 assists/game and 3.6 rebounds/game. Spartans lost their last three games, at Purdue, Illinois and at home to Indiana, after an 18-1 start.

8) Eagles put the franchise tag on Nick Foles, in hopes of getting a 3rd-round draft pick in a trade for him, but then Foles negated that option by saying he?d pay Philly $2M to become a free agent.

There are several teams who need a quarterback.

7) Tennessee is #1 in country in basketball, but the last time Tennessee won the SEC basketball tournament was 1979; ten other schools have won the SEC tourney since then.

6) Why did Texas dump Rick Barnes? Longhorns are 16-29 in Big X games the last three years, and don?t play the ?havoc? style that made Shaka Smart?s VCU teams successful. Smart seems out of place at Texas; at VCU, he out-recruited his league and pressed successfully.

Barnes is 31-15 in SEC games the last three years at Tennessee.

5) Right now, Cal-Irvine and Stony Brook are the only two college basketball teams with ten road wins this season.

4) NBA teams with worst records vs spread on second night of back/backs:
Celtics 0-7, Nets 1-9, Kings 2-8, 76ers 2-6

NBA teams with best records vs spread on second night of back/backs:
Raptors 7-2, Wizards 6-2, Hornets 5-2, Nuggets 5-2-1

3) The new AAF that starts this weekend has no kickoffs, and teams that score TD?s have to go for 2 points every time- no PAT?s. No TV timeouts; games are expected to last 2:30 at most.

2) Odd fact: Baltimore/Indianapolis Colts have played in four Super Bowls, all of which were played in Miami. Next year?s Super Bowl is in Miami.

1) Sports Illustrated throws a party the night before the Super Bowl every year; saw a clip on Twitter of this year?s party, where Snoop Dawg was talking to Urban Meyer for a couple minutes. Would?ve been fun to listen in on that; talk about worlds colliding. Snoop does know his football, though.

Rangers rally to stun Bruins in SO
February 6, 2019
By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) Tony DeAngelo scored the decisive goal in the seventh round of the shootout and the New York Rangers rallied from two goals down in the third period to beat the Boston Bruins 4-3 on Wednesday night.

Mika Zibanejad, Kevin Hayes and Filip Chytil scored for New York and Alexandar Georgiev finished with 27 saves. The Rangers won for the second time in five games (2-2-1) after a stretch in which they won four of five.

Danton Heinen, David Pastrnak and Patrice Bergeron scored for Boston, Brad Marchand had two assists, and Jaroslav Halak stopped 36 shots. The Bruins had a two-game winning streak end, but earned a point for the fifth straight game (2-0-3).

Zibanejad and Marchand each scored in the third round of the tiebreaker, and the Rangers won it when David Krejci missed on the Bruins' last attempt.

MAPLE LEAFS 5, SENATORS 4

TORONTO (AP) - Morgan Rielly broke a tie midway through the third period and Toronto beat Ottawa.

Rielly started a rush after an Ottawa turnover, passed to Zach Hyman, and took Hyman's backhand pass alone in front of the goal for his 14th of the season. It also was Rielly's career-high 53rd point.

Auston Matthews, fresh off news of a contract extension, Hyman, Andreas Johnsson and John Tavares also scored for Toronto. Magnus Paajarvi scored twice, and Thomas Chabot and Matt Duchene added goals for Ottawa. Toronto won its third straight and handed Ottawa its fifth straight loss.

Thursday?s 6-pack

? Colorado 84, UCLA 73? Is possible both UCLA/Arizona jobs will be open soon.

? TCU 70, Oklahoma State 68? JD Miller hit a tough runner at the buzzer for the win.

? LSU 92, Mississippi State 88 OT? Really good game that felt like a March game.

? Vermont 86, Maine 63? Vermont leads by a game in America East.

? UNLV 83, Boise State 72? Rebels made 14-26 three-pointers.

? Villanova 66, Creighton 59 OT? First meeting was 90-78; go figure. This game ended on a hoop that was well after the buzzer, but was allowed- that hoop covered the spread.

Quote of the Day
?A successful man is one who can lay a firm foundation with the bricks others have thrown at him.?
David Brinkley

Thursday?s quiz
Where was the Oklahoma City Thunder franchise located, before they moved to Oklahoma?

Wednesday?s quiz
TV analyst Bill Raftery used to be basketball coach at Seton Hall.

Tuesday?s quiz
St Louis Blues made the Stanley Cup finals in its first three years in existence, in the late 60?s/early 70?s, but went 0-12 those three Finals series.

*****************************

Thursday?s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud

13) MLB has suggested a rule requiring pitchers to face a minimum of three batters in each appearance, to lessen the tedious lefty/righty pitching changes that make the end of games drag out endlessly. In one game last year, a team used five relievers in one inning, with each pitcher facing one guy.

12) Also looks like the DH could be in the NL soon, as soon as in this year or next, which makes the Mets? acquiring Robinson Cano look better. The players? union would like the DH to be put into place this season in the NL, probably because DH?s make a lot more money than the average player.

Last season, pitchers batted .115 with a .144 on-base %age and .149 slugging %age in 4,524 at-bats.

11) Big trade in the NBA late Tuesday night; Clippers traded Tobias Harris, Boban Marjanovic, Mike Scott to the 76ers for Landry Shamet, Wilson Chandler, Mike Muscala, a ?20 1st-round draft pick, ?21 unprotected 1st round pick and two 2nd round picks.

Elton Brand is Philly?s GM, and he is being very aggressive in his trading.

10) Kansas-Kansas State game Tuesday night was a joy to listen to; Jon Sciambi calling the action, with Stan Van Gundy/Chauncey Billups doing analysis. Really good team of guys, no screaming, no BS, they talked about basketball with enthusiasm and it was great.

9) Tuesday night also was the 20th anniversary of the first time Mike Breen/Walt Frazier worked together on a Knicks? telecast; they?re an excellent team.

I was lucky enough to meet Walt Frazier at the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas a few years ago; he was friendly, enjoyed talking when he really had no reason to be nice to me, a stranger. He?s a good guy, a great ambassador for the NBA and the Knicks.

8) Atlanta Falcons released 43-year old kicker Matt Bryant, who had two years left on his contract; he was 20-21 on FG?s this past season, and had been with the Falcons for the last decade.

7) Odds to win the AAF, the new football league:
5-2: Arizona Hotshots
4-1: Salt Lake Stallions
5-1: Atlanta, Orlando, San Antonio
10-1: Birmingham, Memphis, San Diego

Not sure how you come up with odds for a brand-new league, but they did.

6) One thing that will be coming up soon that is a little odd; Conference USA has left the last four games of its teams? conference schedules blank. After the games of Feb 16, the league will then schedule those games, with top teams playing each other, to increase all their power rankings, in hopes of getting an at-large (they ain?t getting one).

Maybe the C-USA survivor will get a better NCAA seed; this is the first time this approach has been tried, so we?ll see how it works.

5) Roger Staubach turned 77 this week; typing that made me feel old.

He is my sleeper answer to the question: ?If you had the ball on your 20 with 2:00 left, down 3, who would you want as your QB?? I?m not a Dallas fan, but he was a great player.

4) Former Oklahoma football coach Bob Stoops re-emerged Wednesday as the coach/GM of the Dallas franchise in the XFL, a new league that will begin play in the spring of 2020.

3) This is an interesting number: 40% of all men?s basketball players who enter Division I directly out of high school leave their first college by the end of their sophomore year.

2) Damn, that happened fast; one of Kirk Herbstreit?s sons signed on to play DB at Clemson next season. I remember when Herbstreit would bring his kids on the College GameDay set, and they were all little kids. Time flies.

1) Next year is the NFL?s 100th season, and it sounds like they?re going to start with a Packers-Bears Thursday night matchup in Week 1, the oldest rivalry in the league.

In the Crease - Week 20
Joe Williams

Philly Cheese Stakes
The Philadelphia Flyers continues to rack up victories and they're showing no signs of letting up. The goaltending duo of Carter Hart and Anthony Stolarz have stepped up, and the offense is providing more than enough support. Philadelphia hockey is fun again, and the Flyers are no joke. They'll look to make it nine in a row against the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday night. The Kings have won a pair of road games on this trip, but they're still just 5-11 in the past 16 games as a favorite and 3-8 in the past 11 against Eastern Conference foes. For Philly, they have won just once in the past seven on home ice against the Kings, and the road team is 12-3 in the past 15 in this series.

Leaking Oil
The Edmonton Oilers fired their coach a few weeks ago, but there hasn't been much of a change in results. The Oilers are 0-4-2 over the past six games, and they'll look to stop the leaking in St. Paul on Thursday night against the Minnesota Wild. The Oilers have confirmed goaltender Cam Talbot will be in between the pipes, and he has been a train wreck this season, letting in more than three goals per outing. Edmonton has won just six of their past 19 on the road, and they're 5-16 in the past 21 as an underdog. They're also playing in a 4-in-6 (fourth game in six days) situation, and they're 7-18 in the fourth game in the past 25 tries.

Looking Ahead

Thursday, Feb. 7

Carolina at Buffalo:
The Hurricanes pay old pal Jeff Skinner a visit in his new digs, and Carolina is projected to start Curtis McElhinney in between the pipes. He posted his first shutout of the season, and ninth of his career, in Tuesday's 4-0 road win in Pittsburgh. Speaking of goose eggs, the Hurricanes are 7-0 in their past seven meetings against the Sabres, too. Buffalo would certainly like to turn that ugly number around. Carolina is also 11-5 in the past 16 games overall, while Buffalo is just 4-12 in the past 16 against the Eastern Conference and 0-7 in their past seven trying to follow up a straight-up win.

San Jose at Calgary:
The Sharks skate into Calgary looking to extinguish the Flames. San Jose has won six of their past seven against Western Conference foes, so this will be a big test for the homestanding Flames. The Sharks are also 6-1 in the past seven against teams with a winning overall record. Calgary has won six of the past seven at the Saddledome, and they're 20-8 in the past 28 games overall while cashing in 21 of the past 27 as a favorite. San Jose has won six of the past seven in this series, but the favorite is 8-2 in the past 10 meetings and the home team has also cashed in eight of the past 10 in this series. The over is also 3-1-1 in the past five battles in Calgary.

Friday, Feb. 8

Carolina at N.Y. Rangers:
The Hurricanes hit the New York Thruway after Thursday's game (OK, they're probably flying) to battle the Rangers in MSG in the only game on the slate for Friday. Carolina will be playing the third game of a 3-in-4 (three games in four days) situation, and they're a perfect 6-0 in the third outing. While that's certainly a favorable trend, the Canes are a dismal 5-25-1 in their past 31 battles against the Rangers in Madison Square Garden, and the home team has hit in 16 of the past 21 overall. New York has won just four of their past 14 games at home, however.

Saturday, Feb. 9

Nashville at St. Louis:
The Predators and Blues hook up for the first time since they played a home-and-home back on Nov. 21-23. The home team has defended their ice in both matchup, with the Blues winning 6-2 in the most recent battle as a slight home 'dog. While the last battle in this series went 'over', the 'under' has dominated lately. The under is 8-3-2 in the past 13 in this series, including 4-1-1 in the past six meetings on the banks of the Mighty Mississippi...the ol' Miss...the Old Man...deeeeeeep River. The home team has also cashed in each of the past four in this series.

Pittsburgh at Tampa Bay:
The Penguins hit the road for the Suncoast to battle the Lightning, and this could be a potential Eastern Conference playoff preview. The last time these teams met, Vegas set the line at 6 1/2. The Penguins came away with a 4-2 victory as the 'under' hit. That wouldn't be a big deal, normally, but that under snapped a 14-0 over streak in this series dating back to Nov. 29, 2014. The Lightning have won six of the past seven at home against the Penguins.

Calgary at Vancouver:
The Canucks will look to snuff out the Flames, but that's easier said than done lately. Of course, Vancouver has won two of three against Calgary so far this season, including a 3-2 overtime win on Saddledome ice last time these two hooked up. The over has connected in six of the past seven meetings in this series since the start of the 2017-18 season, too. The road team is actually 5-2 in the past seven in this series, so that bodes well for the high-octane Flames.

Sunday, Feb. 10

Tampa Bay at Florida:
The Lightning and Panthers hook up in the Sunshine State Battle, and plenty of goals are sure to follow. The 'over' has connected in six of the past seven meetings in this series since the start of the 2017-18 NHL campaign. Florida has had surprising success against Tampa, going 5-1-1 in their past seven at the BB&T Center in Sunrise against the Lightning since the start of the 2015-16 season. However, Tampa Bay has won five straight in this series, and seven of the past eight overall.

Capitals beat struggling Avalanche 4-3 in overtime
February 7, 2019
By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) Evgeny Kuznetsov scored in overtime, backup Pheonix Copley made 34 saves and the Washington Capitals beat Colorado 4-3 on Thursday night to hand struggling Avalanche their fifth consecutive loss.

The Avalanche have lost 10 of their past 12 games and are the NHL's worst team since Dec. 7. Colorado is 5-15-4 in that time, going from tied for the most points in the Western Conference to out of a playoff position.

Semyon Varlamov stopped 38 shots, but gave up rebounds and loose pucks all night. Varlamov couldn't control power-play shots from former Capitals teammate and countryman Alex Ovechkin, allowing Kuznetsov to score his first goal on a tap-in and getting a break on an early whistle on what would have been a goal by Nicklas Backstrom. Kuznetsov beat Varlamov on a breakaway with 48 seconds left in overtime to end it.

In the third period, Matt Niskanen scored on a shot from the boards. Varlamov has the second-worst save percentage since Dec. 7 - ahead of only teammate Philipp Grubauer.

Andre Burakovsky also scored for Washington. The defending Stanley Cup champion Capitals have won two in a row after losing eight of their previous nine.

Nathan MacKinnon, Mikko Rantanen and Colin Wilson scored for Colorado, with Wilson tying it with 2:07 left.

Friday?s 6-pack

? Washington State 91, Arizona State 70? There is no logical explanation for this score.

? Cincinnati 69, Memphis 64? Bearcats trailed by 11 early in second half.

? Iowa 77, Indiana 72? Hoosiers lost eight of their last nine games.

? Wofford 78, East Tennessee State 76 OT? Terriers stay unbeaten in SoCon.

? Western Kentucky 92, Rice 85, 2OT? Hilltoppers? coach Rick Stansbury missed this game with back problems; he has bulging disk(s). Bad beat if you had the Owls, +5.

? Wright State 76, Oakland 62? Grizzlies had covered nine in a row as a road underdog in Horizon League games.

Quote of the Day
?I never experienced anything like that in my career. You?re shocked. You?re surprised, but you want kids to be happy and you want them to chase their dreams. I think every kid growing up wants to play at Carolina, Duke, Kansas, Villanova. That?s the reality of it.?
Albany Great Danes? basketball coach Will Brown, who had his starting backcourt poached by big-time schools (Villanova, Florida State) last summer

Friday?s quiz
Which NBA team drafted Kobe Bryant?

Thursday?s quiz
Oklahoma City Thunder were the Seattle SuperSonics, before they moved to Oklahoma.

Wednesday?s quiz
TV analyst Bill Raftery used to be basketball coach at Seton Hall.

***********************

Friday?s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here?..

13) Most guys in the NBA seem unhappy; they?re all getting paid a ton of money to play ball, but they don?t seem happy about it. It is a little sad. Hell, I?m almost 60 years old and I still shoot baskets now and then when the weather is nice.

Just once, ONCE, I want to hear the media quiz a player on trade speculation and have a guy say, ?You know what, I make 20 million bleeping dollars a year. As long as the direct deposit in my bank works, I?ll play anywhere, because this sport is making me freakin? rich!!!?

The honesty would be refreshing.

12) NBA trade deadline was Thursday; biggest news was probably Memphis trading Marc Gasol to the Raptors, as Eastern Conference teams jockey for position to make the NBA Finals, so they can lose to Golden State in five or six games.

Memphis did keep PG Mike Conley, which was a little surprising.

11) From Ramona Shelburne of ESPN:

?Today?s Lakers-Clippers trade is the first between the teams since 1983! Norm Nixon, Eddie Jordan and a 1986 2nd-round pick that became Jeff Hornacek went from the Lakers to the Clippers for Byron Scott, Swen Nater and a pick (Bruce Dalrymple)?

10) Star in the making on TV: former Ole Miss coach Andy Kennedy is very good doing SEC basketball games on the ESPN family of networks. He is low-key funny, honest, knows his stuff and is humble.

Several years ago, when I used to go to the AAU Nationals in Orlando for a couple weeks every summer and watch games for 10-12 hours a day, I spent an afternoon sitting near Kennedy and listened to him talk about ball for a few hours. He wasn?t funny that day, but he is smart and I learned some interesting stuff. Glad he is on TV now.

9) Miami Marlins traded catcher JT Realmuto to Philadelphia for catcher Jorge Alfaro, pitching prospects Sixto Sanchez, Will Stewart, and an international bonus slot.

Realmuto is only 27, figures to be a big upgrade for the Phillies behind the plate.

8) Feel bad for the people who sell preseason preview magazines for baseball; with 120+ guys still unsigned, and Realmuto getting traded Thursday, the preview magazines aren?t going to be as informative as they usually are.

7) Major League Baseball will rename the disabled list the ?injured list?; it has been called the disabled list since 1966. It is a cosmetic change for now; the rules of it remain the same.

6) Oklahoma QB Kyler Murray will leave spring training with the A?s to attend the NFL Combine at the end of March; hopefully he?ll do really well and will give up his baseball dream and the A?s can save the $4.66M they unwisely promised him last summer.

5) St Francis, PA gets a 5pm tipoff game on ESPNU, and the team known as the Red Flash wears???black uniforms. Go figure.

4) Harrison Barnes was sitting on the Mavericks? bench Wednesday night when he found out he had been traded to Sacramento, which had to be at least a little awkward.

Kind of like a few years ago when a Mets fan told Wilmer Flores he was getting traded while Flores was in the on-deck circle- when he went out in the field the next inning, he had tears on his face, he didn?t want to get traded, and it turns out, he didn?t get traded. The fan was wrong.

3) Washington 67, Arizona 60? Wildcats lost four straight games in Pac-12 for first time in ten years; given all their off-court issues, Sean Miller?s job has to be in jeopardy.

2) Now that the NBA trade deadline has passed, Anthony Davis will be back in the lineup for the New Orleans Pelicans. Pelicans will probably have to trade him this summer.

1) RIP Frank Robinson 83, the great outfielder who is the only guy ever to win the MVP in both leagues, and was also the first African-American manager in the major leagues.
