Murray makes 50 saves, Penguins beat Flyers 4-1
February 11, 2019
By The Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Matt Murray made 50 saves and Sidney Crosby had a goal and an assist to lead the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 4-1 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday night.

Jake Guentzel and Nick Bjugstad also scored and Kris Letang had an empty-netter for the Penguins, who snapped a four-game losing streak while winning for just the fourth time in the last 12. Pittsburgh entered holding the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.

Jakub Voracek scored for Philadelphia, which lost for just the second time in 11 games. The Flyers could've pulled within four points of Pittsburgh with a victory, but now stand eight points behind the Penguins.

Flyers rookie goalie Carter Hart had his eight-game win streak halted, falling one game shy of setting an NHL record for consecutive victories prior to turning 21 years old. The 20-year-old also finished a game short of tying Pelle Lindbergh for the Flyers' rookie record for wins in a row. Hart had 24 saves.

CAPITALS 6, KINGS 4

WASHINGTON (AP) - Evgeny Kuznetsov had two goals and two assists to lead Washington over Los Angeles.

Alex Ovechkin scored his NHL-leading 38th goal and had two assists and Brett Connolly, Christian Djoos and Jakub Vrana scored for the Capitals, who won for the third time in four games.

Kings goalie Jonathan Quick allowed six goals on 31 shots behind some uneven defense. Austin Wagner scored twice and Tyler Toffoli and Oscar Fantenberg each had a goal for Los Angeles, which went 3-2-1 on its six-game trip.

SHARKS 7, CANUCKS 2

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) - Evander Kane scored twice, leading San Jose past Vancouver.

The victory moves San Jose into first place in the Western Conference and extends the Sharks' winning streak to six games.

Timo Meier, Melker Karlsson, Tomas Hertl, Kevin Lebanc and Joe Pavelski also scored for the Sharks. Martin Jones had 25 saves.

Bo Horvat and Derrick Pouliot scored for Vancouver. Mike DiPietro stopped 17 of 24 shots in his NHL debut.

Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Six top minor league prospects of the Atlanta Braves:

1) Austin Riley, 3B? Josh Donaldson will keep Riley in AAA this season.

2) Ian Anderson, P? Went to HS 10-15 miles from Armadillo World HQ.

3) Mike Soroka, P? Was 2-1, 3.51 in five major league starts LY.

9) William Contreras, C? Younger brother of Cubs? C Wilson Contreras.

14) Kolby Allard, P? 10 of Atlanta?s top 14 prospects are pitchers.

25) AJ Graffanino, SS? Son of former big leaguer Tony Graffanino.

**********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but??

13) Oklahoma QB Kyler Murray chose football over baseball Monday, ending speculation as to whether he would show up at Oakland?s training camp later this week.

Murray forfeits the vast majority of his $4.66M signing bonus from the A?s, but he?ll make a lot more than that when he gets picked in the first round of the NFL Draft. Read Monday that Murray winds up earning $210,000 from the A?s, for pretty much doing nothing.

The 58th overall pick in last year?s NFL draft got a contract worth $4.86M, so as long as Murray is picked higher than 58th (which he will be), he makes money on this deal.

Meanwhile, A?s had the 9th pick in the MLB draft LY and totally wasted it. No bueno. They do retain Murray?s baseball rights, but those are basically worthless now.

12) With Hall of Fame baseball player Frank Robinson passing away this past week, there were pictures of him posted on the Interweb; one of them was when he was managing the Nationals, in 2005 or 2006. He is leaning against the front rail of the dugout.

You look right behind the dugout and you can see the fans in the front row; one of the fans is Brett Kavanaugh, the Supreme Court judge who was under scrutiny last year for how much money he spent back then on tickets to Nationals? games. Pretty sweet seats he had.

11) Cincinnati Bengals? new offensive coordinator is Brian Callahan, whose father Bill coached the Oakland Raiders for a while; the Bengals? new head coach is Zac Taylor, who played QB for Bill Callahan at Nebraska.

10) Weird stat: Duke hasn?t won or shared the ACC regular season title since 2010; they haven?t won it by themselves since 2006.

9) Tennessee is 22-1 and ranked #1 in country, even though none of their players were top 100 recruits nationally coming out of high school.

8) Indians? SS Francisco Lindor has a right calf strain that will keep him sidelined from 7-9 weeks, which makes him doubtful to start the regular season.

7) From Tyler Bischoff:

UNLV?s basketball team has never had a defense finish outside the top 200 in kenpom.com?s defensive efficiency rating. This goes back to 2002.

With seven games left this season, Rebels are ranked #238 in defensive efficiency, which helps explain their 12-11 record. Losing their best player Shakur Juiston for the season was a back-breaker.

6) Once you watch an AAF game on TV and you hear the replay official as he gives his verdict to the referee, it is obvious that the NFL has to do this next year, just to give transparency to the replay process. Makes the broadcast more interesting.

5) Three of eight AAF teams ran 70+ plays in Week 1; NFL teams rarely run 70 plays in a game, so it looks like the shorter play clock will result in more action during their games.

4) New Orleans Saints hired Darren Rizzi as special teams coordinator; he spent the last eight years as Miami?s special teams coach.

3) Los Angeles Rams hired Wes Phillips as their new TE?s coach; he worked with Sean McVay in Washington and is the son of Rams? DC Wade Phillips.

2) When the Texas Longhorns were recruiting Patrick Mahomes, they recruited him as a DB, not a quarterback, which makes you question what the hell were they thinking about? How many QB?s in the NFL right now played at Texas?

1) It snowed in Las Vegas Sunday night; that doesn?t happen much. There was a video on Twitter of a guy driving around Las Vegas, with the traffic lights and street lights both out, but all the casinos were lit up like usual. Was a little eerie, though.

Sidney Crosby and Connor McDavid clash highlights this week's NHL predictions and picks
Monty Andrews

The latest batch of early-week NHL action is full of notable matchups, including the NHL's two top teams locking horns in the Sunshine State, and two of the league's biggest stars facing off in Pennsylvania. Here are the top games, betting trends and tips to monitor in the world of hockey.

Shark Attack

Don't look now, but the San Jose Sharks have emerged as a truly scary opponent in their quest to reach the Stanley Cup final for the first time in franchise history. San Jose has ripped off five consecutive wins ? the last three coming on Canadian soil ? going into Monday's encounter with a Canucks side that has lost four of six.

San Jose has won in 20 of its previous 28 visits to British Columbia, and has surrendered just eight goals over its last four games. The past two wins have been identical 5-2 San Jose victories, and given the team's success in Vancouver, rolling with the puck-line bet (+165) isn't a bad play.

Lucky Number Seven?

You don't see many O/Us of 7 in NHL play, but Tuesday's matchup between the Calgary Flames and Tampa Bay Lightning at Amalie Arena might just get there. The teams rank first and second in goals per game in the league, with the Lightning at an incredible 3.8 goals per contest and the Flames close behind at 3.67.

Both teams are riding red-hot Over streaks coming into this one, with Calgary an incredible 14-2 O/U in its previous 16 games overall and Tampa Bay 5-2-1 O/U in its past eight against the Pacific Division. The teams have also cashed the Over in four of their previous five meetings.

Power Outage

The Toronto Maple Leafs and Colorado Avalanche are loaded with star power ? so why would any logical bettor even consider the Under in this one? It comes down to the power-plays ? and neither team is faring all that well with the man advantage as they lock horns Tuesday night at Pepsi Center.

The Avalanche are still looking for their first power-play goal of the unofficial second half of the season, having gone 0-for-14 since the All-Star break. The Maple Leafs have gone 1-for-18 since the break; they were 0-for-4 in Sunday's 4-1 loss to the New York Rangers despite finishing with 23 power-play shots on goal.

Connor vs. Sid

Get your player props ready ? Wednesday's encounter between the Edmonton Oilers and the host Pittsburgh Penguins could be a bit of a barn-burner. The teams exploded for 11 total goals in a narrow Penguins victory in their first meeting of the season Oct. 24, reversing a trend that had seen the teams score five or fewer total goals in five of their previous six encounters.

Oilers star Connor McDavid is a prime candidate for a player prop pick, having recorded three goals and six assists in five career games against Pittsburgh. Penguins counterpart Sidney Crosby is also in play, with 18 points in 15 career outings vs. the Oilers.
Goalie Profile: Alexandar Georgiev, New York Rangers

This is still Henrik Lundqvist's team ? but Gregoriev has made a signifcant case for more time in the crease. Gregoriev is coming off a ridiculous 55-save performance in a weekend victory over the Maple Leafs, and has surrendered just five total goals over his previous three appearances. The trick for the 23-year-old Russian netminder: duplicating his Madison Square Garden success on the road, where he has gone a dismal 3-7-0 with a 4.11 goals-against average and an .882 save percentage. The Rangers are +170 underdogs for Tuesday's showdown with the host Winnipeg Jets.

Hat Trick Trends

Jake Brenk's name might not be familiar to most hockey fans, but he's notable within the betting community. Brenk has been the least-friendly official to home teams of any regular referee this season, with the home side going 16-36 ATS in his assignments for a total of -18.54 units. Home teams are averaging 2.87 goals in his games, compared to a 3.29 average by the road team.

As for which referee has been part of the most offensively entertaining games this season, one man stands above the rest. Ghislain Hebert has seen an average of 6.79 goals scored in his assignments so far, the highest average of any official with at least 30 games under his belt. His contests carry a 34-26 O/U record, good for +6.55 units on the over play.

The battle for best "break-even" team has become a two-horse race between the Rangers and Arizona Coyotes. The Broadway Blueshirts have generated a total of +0.2 units through their first 55 games, with 0.61 units won at home and 0.41 units lost on the road. The Coyotes are at -0.13 units for the year, having lost 6.7 units at home and won 6.57 away from Arizona.

Bruins snap Blackhawks' 7-game win streak
February 12, 2019
By The Associated Press

BOSTON (AP) David Krejci, Danton Heinen and Brad Marchand each scored during a four-minute span at the end of the first period and the Boston Bruins beat the Blackhawks 6-3 on Tuesday night to snap Chicago's seven-game winning streak.

Krejci scored again in the third period, when Marchand picked up his third assist, to help the Bruins win for the fifth time in six games. Jake DeBrusk and Heinen each had a goal and two assists, and Tuukka Rask stopped 23 shots for Boston. Peter Cehlarik also scored for Boston, and Patrice Bergeron had a pair of assists.

Collin Delia made 31 saves, and Alex DeBrincat and Duncan Keith scored for Chicago, which hadn't lost since Jan. 17. Patrick Kane had an assist for the 14th straight game, tying Stan Mikita for the longest assist streak in the history of the Original Six franchise.

The Bruins have not lost in regulation in eight games.

STARS 3, PANTHERS 0

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Anton Khudobin recorded his second shutout of the season and Tyler Seguin had two goals and an assist as Dallas topped Florida.

Esa Lindell also scored, and Alexander Radulov had two assists for Dallas, which snapped a two-game losing streak and won for the sixth time in eight games.

With Stars goalie Ben Bishop out, Khudobin made his third consecutive start, stopping 30 shots and winning for just the second time in six starts. It was the eighth shutout of Khudobin's career.

Roberto Luongo recorded 16 saves for Florida, which lost its second straight, both at home at the start of a seven-game homestand. The Panthers were shut out for the first time this season - the last team in the NHL to be blanked.

LIGHTNING 6, FLAMES 3

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - NHL points leader Nikita Kucherov had a goal and three assists, Brayden Point added a goal and two assists, and Tampa Bay doubled up Calgary.

Kucherov has 88 points, including seven over his last two games. Kucherov and Point (72) are the second pair of Tampa Bay teammates to reach 70 points in 57 team games. Martin St. Louis and Vincent Lecavalier did it in 2006-07.

Cedric Paquette, Anthony Cirelli, Yanni Gourde and Steven Stamkos also scored for the NHL-leading Lightning, who are 5-0-2 over the last seven games. Andrei Vasilevskiy made 19 saves.

Calgary, 1-3-1 in its last five games, got two goals from Sean Monahan. Mark Giordano had the other Flames goal, and David Rittich stopped 21 shots.

SABRES 3, ISLANDERS 1

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Jack Eichel set up two goals in leading Buffalo to a win over Metropolitan Division-leading New York.

Jason Pominville scored the go-ahead goal 6:49 into the second period. Jeff Skinner scored off a faceoff draw won by Eichel, and Johan Larsson sealed the victory with 2:25 left. Linus Ullmark stopped 24 shots to improve to 3-0-1 in his past four starts.

The Sabres improved to 3-2-1 six games into a seven-game homestand. Overall, Buffalo improved to 28-21-7 and picked up its 63rd point, one more than last season.

Casey Cizikas scored for the Islanders, who had a three-game winning streak snapped and lost in regulation for just the second time in 13 games (9-2-2). Robin Lehner stopped 19 shots in dropping to 13-3-1 in his past 17 starts.

BLUE JACKETS 3, CAPITALS 0

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Sergei Bobrovsky made 13 of his 20 saves in the third period to lift Columbus over Washington.

Anthony Duclair, Nick Foligno and Artemi Panarin scored for the Blue Jackets, who won their fourth straight and remained in third place in the Metropolitan Division, two points behind Washington.

Bobrovsky recorded his 27th career shutout.

Braden Holtby had 29 saves and held off the Blue Jackets on four power plays with a few close calls.

HURRICANES 4, SENATORS 1

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) - Teuvo Teravainen scored twice and Carolina scored four unanswered goals in the third period to beat Ottawa.

Micheal Ferland and Justin Williams also scored for the Hurricanes, who wrapped up a season-long five game trip. Curtis McElhinney made 25 saves.

Mark Stone scored for the Senators, who had their two-game winning streak snapped. Anders Nilsson made his third straight start and stopped 33 shots.

RED WINGS 3, PREDATORS 2

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Andreas Athanasiou scored at 4:08 of the third period, and struggling Detroit beat Nashville to snap a three-game skid.

Luke Glendening had a goal and an assist, Nick Jensen had two assists and Dylan Larkin also had a goal for Detroit. Goalie Jimmy Howard made 32 saves for the win.

Viktor Arvidsson and P.K. Subban scored for Nashville, which has lost three straight for its longest skid since losing four straight between Dec. 17-22. Ryan Johansen and Filip Forsberg had two assists apiece.

BLUES 8, DEVILS 3

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Alex Pietrangelo and Ivan Barbashev each scored twice and St. Louis won its seventh straight game.

Jaden Schwartz, Ryan O'Reilly, Mackenzie MacEachern and Tyler Bozak also scored for the Blues, whose eight goals were a season high. St. Louis' winning streak is its longest since Jan. 17-Feb. 5, 2015, when it also had seven consecutive victories.

Rookie Jordan Binnington made 20 saves to win his sixth straight start, becoming the second goalie in Blues history with a winning streak of at least six games. Brent Johnson twice won seven in a row in 2000 and 2001.

Pavel Zacha, Kyle Palmieri and Mirco Mueller scored for the Devils, who have lost 10 straight to St. Louis.

St. Louis' Vladimir Tarasenko had two assists, extending his point streak to a career-high nine games (seven goals, seven assists).

Keith Kinkaid allowed all eight St. Louis goals, a career high, on 39 shots, and fell to 0-4-1 against the Blues.

JETS 4, RANGERS 3

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Mark Scheifele had two goals and an assist as Winnipeg edged New York.

Jets defenseman Joe Morrow recorded his first goal of the season and Andrew Copp also scored for Winnipeg.

Mika Zibanejad scored twice and Pavel Buchnevich had the other goal for the Rangers. Mats Zuccarello added two assists.

Connor Hellebuyck made 34 saves for the Jets, who have at least a point in their past nine home games (8-0-1).

Luke Kunin scored twice, while Zach Parise and Jared Spurgeon added goals for the Wild, who fell to 1-4-2 since the All-Star break.

Anthony Stolarz made 35 saves for the Flyers. Devan Dubnyk stopped 21 of 26 shots for Minnesota.

Wednesday?s 6-pack

Updated odds to win the Big X conference tournament:
? Texas Tech 11-4
? Iowa State 3-1
? Kansas 7-2
? Kansas State/Texas 6-1
? Baylor 10-1
? TCU 12-1
? Oklahoma 15-1

Late Update: Duke 71, Louisville 69? Cardinals led 59-36 with 9:20 left, then turned the ball over nine times from that point on, in an epic collapse, the 2nd-biggest comeback win in Duke basketball history.

Quote of the Day
?(Lakers? GM) Rob Pelinka called me and said that Ben [Simmons] wanted to talk to Hall of Famers after the season. Magic (Johnson) was on the list. He asked for authorization ? I said no.?
76ers? GM Elton Brand, who doesn?t want the Lakers tampering with his star

Wednesday?s quiz

Which NBA team did John Calipari used to coach?

Tuesday?s quiz
Steve Spurrier coached the Tampa Bay Bandits in the USFL, back in the mid-80?s.

Monday?s quiz
Hank Aaron played LF for the Milwaukee Braves in his first major league game at Wrigley Field, in 1954; Hall of Famer Ralph Kiner played LF for the Cubs that day.

*******************

Wednesday?s List of 13: A snowy list of mid-week musings??.

13) We talk now and then about the football handicapping contests in Las Vegas, the best one being at the Westgate SuperBook, and another really good one at the Golden Nugget.

Signups for the Golden Nugget contest start March 8, $1,000 an entry; you pick seven games a week, college or NFL. Each person can have three entries. Seems like football season just ended; oh wait, it did??. 🙂

More and more of these contests are going to pop up around the country, as legalized gambling spreads. Good way to get people in the door of your casino.

12) Cleveland Browns signed former Chiefs? RB Kareem Hunt, who got into trouble with the NFL after he got into a scuffle with his girlfriend in a hotel last fall, a scuffle that was captured on camera.

11) Jacob deGrom informed the Mets that he will not negotiate a new deal during the season; deGrom?s camp has set Opening Day as the deadline to complete any potential long-term deal.

deGrom can become a free-agent after the 2020 season; he wants a contract that would buy out his remaining arbitration year and extend his agreement with the Mets long term.

10) You can wager one of these four teams (Duke, Michigan, Gonzaga and Kansas) to win the national title at -$125 vs the field (+105). Interesting wager. Gonzaga/Kansas have injury issues, but someone is going to have to beat Duke for you, if you play the field.

9) Surprising fact; according to Wikipedia, El Paso has 683,577 citizens; Boston has 685,094. Wouldn?t have thought that.

8) In case you were wondering, Las Vegas sportsbooks took $145,939,025 in bets on the Super Bowl, 2nd-most of all time; the bettors lost $10,780,319 on those wagers.

7) Atlanta Falcons added former Chiefs? DC Bob Sutton to its stuff, to help coach Dan Quinn with game management. Quinn is expected to run the Falcons? defense next year.

6) TCU basketball coach Jamie Dixon grew up in the Los Angeles area; when was a kid, he starred in several TV commercials, including ads for Volvo, Rice Krispies, Mattel and Bud Light.

5) AAF?s Memphis Express signed QB JaMarcus Russell, who last played in the NFL in 2009; he went 7-18 as a starter in three years with the Oakland Raiders. Memphis got shut out in its AAF opener; they could use some help, but I?m not sure if Russell will help.

4) A?s signed oft-injured lefty starter Brett Anderson; it?ll be his third stint with Oakland.

3) Virginia 69, North Carolina 61? Solid road win for the Cavaliers Monday night, 48 hours after they lost at home to Duke.

2) Nine of 32 NFL teams will have new offensive coordinators next season.

Rich Scangarello is he new OC in San Francisco; he?s made coaching stops at Carleton (2001), Milsaps (?10-?11), Northern Arizona (?12-?14), Wagner (?16). Not exactly football hotbeds.

1) Understood that Kyler Murray is free to choose his own career path, but when a team pays you $210,000 like the A?s did for basically doing nothing, you owe them a phone call or a text to clue them in on your decision before you go in the other direction.

It is common courtesy; Murray?s advisors made him look bad Monday.

Boyle gets shutout, Ducks top Canucks 1-0 in Murray's debut
February 14, 2019
By The Associated Press

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Kevin Boyle made 35 saves in his first career start and the Anaheim Ducks beat the Vancouver Canucks 1-0 Wednesday night in general manager Bob Murray's first game as interim coach.

Jakob Silfverberg scored to help the Ducks end a seven-game losing streak, a skid which prompted Murray to fire coach Randy Carlyle on Sunday and take over for the rest of the season.

Jacob Markstrom made 21 saves for the Canucks, who have lost four straight road games.

The 64-year-old Murray had never coached professionally at any level but got the response he had been looking for, with Silfverberg scoring 6:30 into the first period to give the Ducks their first lead since getting the opening goal in a 5-1 loss at St. Louis on Jan. 23.

PENGUINS 3, OILERS 1

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Matt Murray robbed Connor McDavid on a penalty shot for one of his 38 saves as Pittsburgh beat struggling Edmonton.

Bryan Rust, Teddy Blueger and Jared McCann all scored as Pittsburgh picked up two vital points despite playing without suspended center Evgeni Malkin, forced to sit while serving a one-game suspension for an illegal high stick. Penguins captain Sidney Crosby finished with one assist and spent large portions of the night going head to head with McDavid.

McDavid picked up an assist on Leon Draisaitl's first-period goal but was otherwise held in check. Mikko Koskinen stopped 31 shots for the Oilers but couldn't stop Edmonton from falling for the eighth time in nine games.

Armadillo: Thursday's Den: We?re changing things a little, starting today??.

Starting today, we?re starting something different here, something that hopefully you like and hopefully something that won?t drive me crazy.

I?ll post a selection EVERY DAY going forward, whether it be a college game, an NBA game, a futures bet or even an NHL or AAF game. Picks will be posted by noon each day.

Only exceptions will be during the baseball All-Star break, and the short time in October between the end of baseball season and the beginning of the NBA.

Been debating this for several months, but Wednesday, while shoveling snow (oddly enough) I decided that this was the way to go. So if this doesn?t go well, blame my snowplow guy, who for some reason, is on vacation this week.

Wrapping up college hoop games the last two nights??.
13) Duke 71, Louisville 69? Cardinals led by 23 with 9:20 left, then collapsed down stretch, turning ball over nine times from that point on as Duke ratcheted up their pressure.

Chris Mack has some serious psychology work ahead of him the rest of this week.

12) Nets 148, Cavaliers 139, 3OTs? D?Angelo Russell scored 28 of the Nets? 39 points in the OT?s; he had only 8 points in regulation. Kenny Atkinson is doing a great job to have the Nets a 29-29 with two of his best players missing large chunks of the season with injuries.

Jordan Clarkson scored 42 for Cleveland in this game, and he didn?t start.

11) Miami 65, Clemson 64? Hurricanes tore Clemson?s heart out, hitting an off-balance jumper with 0:00.4 left for the unlikely win. Tigers had fought their way into being ?in? projections of the Field of 68, but this bad loss likely drops them back out.

10) Kansas State 71, Texas 64:

Texas coach Shaka Smart to his team during a first half timeout: ?This is a basketball game against a team we?re better than!!!?

Well, maybe not. K-State is 19-5, 9-2 in the league; Texas is 14-11, 6-6 in the league. You tell me which team is better.

Matthew McConaughey was sitting on the end of the Longhorns? bench, which I?m assuming is legal, since its not the first time he?s done it, but since when do boosters sit on the bench during the freakin? game?

9) Western Kentucky basketball coach Rick Stansbury will miss Thursday, Saturday games this week; he is having back surgery Friday. Assistant coach Mark Hsu, who served as interim coach in Stansbury?s place last week, will continue in that role.

8) LSU 73, Kentucky 71? Outstanding game ended on an LSU tip-in at the buzzer, that was really close to being offensive goaltending. Two very good, young teams; this game had a March feel to it.

7) Xavier 64, Creighton 61 OT? Bluejays lose third straight game, two of them in OT. Xavier ends a 6-game losing streak.

6) UCLA 75, California 67, OT? Bruins were down 7 at half, came back and kept Golden Bears winless in Pac-12 play. Last Pac-12 team to go 0-18 in conference was Oregon State 11 years ago, but league was a hell of a lot better then than it is now.

5) St Bonaventure 76, St Joe?s 51?Bonnies won for 4th time in last six games, climb over .500 (6-5) in the A-14- they?ve won their last four road games.

Coach Mark Schmidt has now tied Larry Weise for the most coaching wins in St Bonaventure history, with 202, and he did it on his birthday, which is nice.

4) Ole Miss 60, Auburn 55? Rebels were 13-33 on arc, only 6-18 inside arc, which is weird. Auburn was 5-20 on arc, which is how upsets happen.

3) Quinnipiac 98, Rider 88 OT? Rider just played three games in five nights and lost all three, the first two by 1-2 points, then this; they led this game by 9 with 0:49 left, by 7 with 0:24 left.

2) There was a big NFL trade Wednesday; Ravens traded Joe Flacco to Denver, for what is expected to be a 4th round pick in April?s draft.

Flacco was a Raven for 11 years, winning Super Bowl XLVII; he was 96-67 as a starter, 10-5 in playoff games, so a very productive Raven.

By way of comparison, Eli Manning is 116-114 as a starter, 8-4 in playoff games; I?ve never heard anyone suggest that Flacco is a Hall of Famer, so why would Manning be one?

Ravens-Broncos do not play next season, which is too bad for the NFL?s schedule makers.

1) Then there is Case Keenum, who could be playing for his 4th team in four years in 2019, as he dashes towards the Ryan Fitzpatrick career path.

Streaky Teams

Buying The Blues

The St. Louis Blues fired their coach earlier in the season and appeared to be dead in the water. A lengthy slump at any point of the season in the Western Conference usually means you can sound the death knell. However, the West is not as deep as in the past, and it might only take 85-90 points to qualify for the postseason when teams in the past have missed with so many more. The Blues travel to Arizona on Thursday, putting a seven-game winning streak on the line. They're 5-0 in their past five road games, too, and 4-0 in the past four as a favorite.

The Coyotes haven't been a pushover this season, but lately they're starting leak oil. Arizona has won just two of the past seven games overall, and they're 2-5 in the past seven as an underdog, too. At home, the Coyotes have managed to scratch out just five of their past 18 games, and they're 3-8 in the past 11 as a home 'dog, too. To make matters worse for Arizona, the favorite is 21-5 in the past 26 meetings in this series, with St. Louis 9-2 in their past 11 trips to the desert and 19-7 in the past 26 overall. If you like parlays (and really, who doesn't?), the 'over' has connected in seven of the past nine meetings in this series.

Looking Ahead

Thursday, Feb. 14

Dallas at Tampa Bay:
The Stars are coming off a 3-0 road victory against the Florida Panthers, as G Anton Khudobin stopped all 30 shots he faced in that one on Tuesday. Now, he'll have a much bigger test against the high-octane Lightning. He is 2-1-1 with a 1.76 goals-against average with a .947 save percentage across his past four outings since the All-Star break. The Stars have won six of their past eight games overall, but they're 0-4 in the past four meetings with the Lightning and 2-5 in their past seven trips to Tampa. The 'over' is also 14-3 in the past 17 in this series, with the over hitting in each of the past seven played on the Suncoast.

Washington at San Jose:
The Capitals and Sharks could very well be a potential Stanley Cup Finals preview, although the Caps have shown signs of mediocrity lately. The Caps have won four in a row against Western Conference teams, although they're just 4-10 in the past 14 games overall. They're also 1-4 in the past five as a road 'dog, and 0-4 in the past four overall on the road. Washington has won just once in the past eight games against teams with a winning overall record, too.

For San Jose, they're 6-0 in the past six as a home favorite, while cashing in five in a row against Metropolitan Division foes. They have also won seven of the past eight against teams with a winning overall mark. The Sharks have connected in 10 of their past 12 games as a favorite, while going 17-4 in the past 21 following a victory. SAP Center has also been difficult for opponents, as the Sharks are 40-19 in the past 59 on home ice. To make matters worse, All-Star D Erik Karlsson (groin) could potentially return after eight games out.

Friday, Feb. 15

Boston at Anaheim:
The Ducks surprised the Canucks on Wednesday night by a 1-0 score. It wasn't terribly surprising that they won in interim coach/general manager Bob Murray's debut behind the bench, but it was surprising that Kevin Boyle was able to post a shutout in his first NHL start. He is likely to get the starting nod again with John Gibson (head) on the Injured Reserve list, and Chad Johnson also sidelined. It will be interesting to see if Boyle can do it again versus one of the top offenses in the Eastern Conference.

Saturday, Feb. 16

Calgary at Pittsburgh:
The Flames roll into the Steel City looking to be mightier than the Pens. Pittsburgh has actually been pretty solid against the Western Conference, going 7-4 in the past 11 against the West. The Flames have likely had this one circled on their calendars for a while after being emasculated by the Pens in Calgary by a 9-1 count back on Oct. 25. The Flames enter this one 6-3 in the past nine vs. Eastern Conference clubs.

St. Louis at Colorado:
The Blues and Avalanche hook up for the third time this season, and each of the previous two meetings have resulted in St. Louis wins in overtime. That includes the most recent matchup on Dec. 14 in Denver. It's par for the course for the Avalanche, as they have dropped eight straight in overtime dating back to Nov. 18.

Montreal at Tampa Bay:
The Lightning were expected to be a contender this season, and they're certainly championship caliber and among the favorites to hoist Lord Stanley's Cup. The Canadiens are a surprise contender in the Eastern Conference, hanging around in the playoff picture and exceeding expectations. If they're to get over the hump, they need to beat the good teams, though. They're 0-2 in the first two meetings with the Lightning this season, including a 6-5 loss on Dec. 29 in Tampa. The Habs are 1-6 in the past seven against the Lightning, last winning in Tampa on April 1, 2017.

Nashville at Vegas:
The Predators are certainly not fazed by the Golden Knights. They have won both of the previous meetings this season, and three in a row overall in the series. They have outscored Vegas 7-2 in that three-game run, including a 2-1 win on Jan. 23 at T-Mobile Arena right before the All-Star break. Each of the past four meetings in this series have cashed the 'under', too.

Sunday, Feb. 17

Washington at Anaheim:
The Capitals and Ducks will tangle in Southern California. The Ducks have had a difficult time of it against the Eastern Conference, going 1-9-2 in the past 12 against the East heading into Friday's battle against the Bruins. Oddly enough, they were able to beat the defending champs by a 6-5 count in D.C. in the first meeting back on Dec. 2, and that was during a six-game road winning streak against Eastern Conference teams. Can they sweep the Caps for a signature win?
