Lightning clinch Presidents' Trophy; Canucks win in OT
March 18, 2019
By The Associated Press

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) Steven Stamkos scored his 36th goal of the season and the Tampa Bay Lightning clinched the Presidents' Trophy with a 4-1 victory over the Arizona Coyotes on Monday night.

The Lightning, who have 116 points, will have home-ice advantage throughout the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Stamkos became the franchise leader in goals with his 384th.

Victor Hedman added his 10th goal of the season and Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 28 shots. Anthony Cirelli scored his fifth short-handed goal of the season while Yanni Gourde notched his 20th goal of the season.

Clayton Keller scored for Arizona, which remains one point ahead of Minnesota for the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference.

Darcy Kuemper finished with 20 saves.

Stamkos' record-breaking goal was scored at 6:54 of the first period as Stamkos, battling in front of the Arizona net, got his stick on Ryan McDonagh's shot and deflected the puck past Kuemper.

The goal came in the 737th game for Stamkos and broke the tie with former captain Vinny Lecavalier, who set the record in 1,037 games with Tampa Bay from 1998-2013.

CANUCKS 3, BLACKHAWKS 2, OT

CHICAGO (AP) - Bo Horvat scored 16 seconds into overtime, and Vancouver stopped Chicago's five-game win streak with a victory over the Blackhawks.

Alexander Edler and Markus Granlund also scored for Vancouver, which was coming off a 3-2 shootout victory in Dallas on Sunday. Thatcher Demko made 29 saves in his third career win.

The Canucks (31-32-10) pulled within six points of Arizona for the second wild card in the jumbled bottom of the Western Conference. They begin a seven-game homestand on Wednesday night against Ottawa.

Jonathan Toews and Erik Gustafsson scored for Chicago (32-30-10), and Corey Crawford made 31 stops.

The Blackhawks trailed 2-1 before Gustafsson's long slap shot got by Demko with 3:13 left in regulation. It looked as if Gustafsson's shot might have gone off Edler in front.

But Horvat stepped up for Vancouver, beating Crawford for his 25th of the season.

Tuesday?s 6-pack

Odds to win the Valspar Championship golf tournament this week:

11-2- Dustin Johnson

10-1? Jason Day, Jon Rahm

16-1? Sergio Garcia

20-1? Paul Casey, Patrick Reed, Webb Simpson

25-1? Gary Woodland

33-1? Jim Furyk, Keegan Bradley, Lucas Glover

Tweet of the Day
?Really and truly, very honestly, it?s not my responsibility to tell you guys what I?m doing.??
NJ Giants? GM Dave Gettleman, ingratiating himself to the NY/NJ media

Tuesday?s quiz
Which NHL team has the longest active streak of consecutive years in the playoffs?

Monday?s quiz
2011 VCU Rams made the Final Four after playing a play-in game in Dayton just to get into the final 64 teams.

Sunday?s quiz
Syracuse/UConn played a 6-overtime game in the 2009 Big East tournament.

**********************************

Tuesday?s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but??

13) Zion Williamson sat out three weeks with a knee injury, then came back over the weekend and played three games in three nights, playing 35-36-40 minutes; how is that smart? The games weren?t critical to Duke?s season; if Williamson had gotten hurt again, then what?

12) Meanwhile, Arkansas big man Daniel Gafford is bolting to the NBA after this, his sophomore season, and won?t play in the Razorbacks? NIT game(s), because he could get hurt.

Williamson plays 35-36-40 minutes on consecutive nights in a mostly meaningless ACC tournament, but this kid won?t play in an NIT game? Oy.

11) San Francisco Dons were shunned by the NIT, then turned down both the CBI and CIT. Likewise for Texas-San Antonio and Jacksonville State.

10) Since 1985, 41 teams with a losing conference record have gotten an at-large bid to the NCAA?s; those teams went 20-21 in the first round, then 6-14 in the round of 32.

Teams in this tournament who were under .500 in conference:
St John?s, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Ohio State

9) Same day the Memphis Express signed Johnny Manziel, they lost QB Zach Mettenberger with an ankle injury, so Manziel is likely to play for Memphis this week.

8) 76-year old Jim Calhoun coached a D-III team in Connecticut this season; the coach was not only new, the team was- it was a men?s team in a school that previously had been an all-female school.

St Joseph?s Bluejays went 16-12 this season, losing in finals of their conference tournament.

7) Coaching carousel:
? Tulane fired coach Mike Dunleavy Sr
? Ohio U hired alum Jeff Boals as its new coach; Boals went 55-41 at Stony Brook, 31-17 in America East games.

6) When the NFL Draft rolls around next month, Giants and Eagles will both make three picks before Dallas picks anyone; the Redskins will pick twice before the Cowboys pick once.

5) Miami Dolphins signed Ryan Fitzpatrick Sunday; he was the 14th QB selected in the 2005 NFL Draft, and is going to become the first QB EVER to throw a pass for eight different NFL teams.

Considering he went to college at Harvard, thats a pretty amazing career, playing 16 years in the NFL, when you didn?t even get a college football scholarship.

4) It turns out that lions are excellent nappers. They hunt mostly at night, and digesting large amounts of meat protein involves effort, so lions often spend as many as 20 hours a day resting.

We?re talking about real-life lions, not Detroit Lions or Nittany Lions.

3) USC is raising its tuition 3.2% next year, up to $57,256 a year; not sure this week was the best time to announce that, after the scandal that broke last week about rich people making payoffs to get their under-qualified kids into these expensive schools, but thats what happened.

2) ACC Network starts up in August, and DirecTV is gong to carry it, which makes me wonder why the hell they don?t carry the Pac-12 Network?

1) Rumor mill has Nebraska firing basketball coach Tim Miles as soon as the Cornhuskers get KO?d from the NIT; Fred Hoiberg is listed as the #1 contender to be the new coach.

Caps regain 1st in the Metro; Canes outlast Pens in shootout
March 19, 2019
By The Associated Press

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) Brett Connolly sparked a three-goal second period and the Washington Capitals moved into first place in the Metropolitan Division with a 4-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday night.

Evgeny Kuznetsov and Tom Wilson also scored in the second as the defending Stanley Cup champions won for the 10th time in 13 games. Andre Burakovsky got the other goal and backup goalie Pheonix Copley made 20 saves in winning his sixth straight since the All-Star break.

Washington started the day tied with the Islanders for first place in the division, but it took over with the win and New York's 5-0 loss to Boston. The Capitals and Islanders each have nine games left in the regular season.

Kenny Agostino scored for the third time in five games for New Jersey. MacKenzie Blackwood made 18 saves as the Devils lost to the Capitals for the third time in four meetings this season

HURRICANES 3, PENGUINS 2, SO

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Dougie Hamilton scored in the shootout, Petr Mrazek stopped Pittsburgh cold and the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Penguins.

Justin Williams scored the tying goal with 1:56 left in regulation, and Brock McGinn also scored for the Hurricanes.

They won their fourth in five games and earned an important two points in the tight Eastern Conference playoff race - and perhaps just as important, prevented the Penguins from picking up a second point.

Jake Guentzel had a goal and an assist, Kris Letang scored a late goal, Bryan Rust had two assists and Matt Murray made 37 saves for the Penguins, who have lost three straight - the past two in either overtime or the shootout - but have earned points in nine of their past 10 games against Metropolitan Division opponents.

CANADIENS 3, FLYERS 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Brendan Gallagher, Shea Weber and Max Domi scored goals, Carey Price stopped 32 shots and Montreal earned a win over Philadelphia.

The Canadiens and Flyers are both chasing a wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference. Montreal entered three points behind Columbus for eighth place in the East and the Flyers were six points out with 78.

With less than 10 games left for each team, time has about run out for the Flyers to complete their desperate playoff push. The Canadiens, well, they have a playoff pulse after losing two straight and four of five overall.

PREDATORS 3, MAPLE LEAFS 0

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Pekka Rinne shut out Toronto for the second time this season and Brian Boyle, Wayne Simmonds and Filip Forsberg scored goals to give Nashville a win over the Maple Leafs.

Nashville won its third straight and Toronto lost for the fourth time in five games.

Rinne made 22 saves and Toronto goalie Frederik Andersen made 17 stops.

Nashville pulled within one point of first-place Winnipeg in the Central Division. But the Predators have played two more games.

Toronto fell six points behind second-place Boston in the Atlantic Division.

Nashville also beat Toronto 4-0 on Jan. 7 when Rinne made 18 saves.

BRUINS 5, ISLANDERS 0

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) - Sean Kuraly scored twice and Tuukka Rask earned his 45th career shutout and Boston beat the Islanders.

Noel Acciari, Patrice Bergeron and Jake DeBrusk also had goals to help the Bruins win their second straight since a three-game skid that followed their 19-game point streak (15-0-4). Boston has won seven consecutive meetings between the teams - eight in a row in New York.

Rask had to make only 13 saves for his fourth shutout this season, and first ever against the Islanders.

Robin Lehner, making first start since he was injured March 5 late in New York's 5-4 shootout win at home against Ottawa, finished with 34 saves. The Islanders' 13 shots were their fewest of the season.

David Pastrnak returned to the Bruins' lineup for first time since Feb. 10. He missed 16 games with a thumb injury sustained when he fell after a team dinner.

FLAMES 4, BLUE JACKETS 2

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - Johnny Gaudreau scored his team-leading 35th goal and Michael Frolik added a goal and an assist and Calgary earned a win over Columbus.

David Rittich made 31 saves to win his fourth start in a row. Andrew Mangiapane and Matthew Tkachuk also scored for the Flames and Austin Czarnik had two assists.

Oliver Bjorkstrand and defenseman Zach Werenski scored for Columbus. Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 27 shots in the loss.

The Flames were the first Western Conference team to clinch a playoff spot Sunday.

With nine games remaining in the regular season, their objective is staying atop the Pacific Division and ahead of the San Jose Sharks.

San Jose was idle Tuesday but clinched a playoff spot when the Minnesota Wild lost to the Colorado Avalanche.

Columbus leads the Eastern Conference's final wild-card spot by one point after Montreal's 3-1 win in Philadelphia.

STARS 4, PANTHERS 2

DALLAS (AP) - Alexander Radulov had two goals in the third period to lift Dallas over Florida.

Coach Jim Montgomery reunited the Stars' three top scorers on the first line during the first period. In addition to Radulov's two goals and an assist, Jamie Benn had a goal and two assists and Tyler Seguin assisted on all four goals.

The Stars remained in position for the Western Conference's first wild-card spot and stayed within two points of third-place St. Louis in the Central Division.

Midway through the third period, Seguin reached up to keep the puck inside the blue line. He then passed to Benn for a 2-on-1 break. Benn passed across to Radulov, who beat Panthers rookie goalie Sam Montembeault with a snap shot to make it 3-2.

Radulov was awarded the empty-net goal, his 24th of the season because a Florida player threw his stick at the puck.

John Klingberg scored on the power play in the second period to give Dallas a 2-1 lead.

AVALANCHE 3, WILD 1

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Philipp Grubauer made 36 saves to lift Colorado over the Wild in a game that had playoff implications in Minnesota and elsewhere.

Tyson Barrie, Tyson Jost and Ian Cole scored for Colorado, which won its second straight game.

Minnesota remained one point behind the idle Arizona Coyotes for the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference, while the Avalanche got within one point of the Wild and two of Arizona. Colorado also has a game in hand on Minnesota.

The result also clinched a playoff berth for the San Jose Sharks.

Zach Parise scored and Devan Dubnyk stopped 35 shots for Minnesota.

BLUES 7, OILERS 2

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Jaden Schwartz had three goals and an assist, David Perron added two goals and two assists, and St. Louis routed the Edmonton.

Schwartz scored once in each period for his fourth career hat trick and first since Oct. 18, 2017, against Chicago.

Alex Pietrangelo and Pat Maroon also scored for the Blues, who outshot Edmonton 44-17 and improved to 6-1-2 in their past nine home games against the Oilers.

RED WINGS 3, RANGERS 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Andreas Athanasiou scored twice and Detroit beat New York.

Frans Nielsen also scored and Taro Hirose recorded an assist during his NHL debut for Detroit, which won its second straight but has already been eliminated from playoff contention.

Jimmy Howard stopped 41 shots.

Ryan Strome and Brendan Smith scored, but the Rangers dropped their fifth consecutive game and inched closer to being knocked out of the playoff race for the second straight season. Henrik Lundqvist made 27 saves.

********************************

Wednesday?s List of 13: Mid-week musings??

13) Mike Trout signed a 12-year, $430M deal with the Angels; thats $35,833,333 per year, if you?re scoring at home. Big day for baseball players and their agents.

The business of baseball myst be good; Artie Moreno bought the Angels for $184M in April, 2003; 16 years later, he pays one guy more than double that.

12) Question is, was this a good day for Angel fans? Halos are also paying Albert Pujols another $87M over the next three seasons. Neither one of those guys pitches, and pitching wins.

11) Oakland A?s entire payroll last year was $65,985,833; now Trout/Pujols will be making $63.8M combined this year. Oakland won 17 more games than the Angels last year.

10) St Joe?s fired coach Phil Martelli Tuesday after 24 years with the school; Hawks were 28-8 three short years ago, but then DeAndre? Bembry left school a year early and things weren?t the same- St Joe?s went 41-55 the last three years, 20-34 in the A-14.

St Joe?s brought in a new athletic director last year, and new AD?s usually don?t care too much about what happened before they got there, so now the Hawks are looking for a new coach. Martelli made the NCAA?s seven times in 24 years at St Joe?s; we live in a fickle society.

9) Freshman Joel Ntambwe is transferring from UNLV, which is terrible news for Rebel fans and the new UNLV coach, whoever that turns out to be. Ntambwe averaged 11.8 ppg and 5.5 rpg this year- he shot 38.6% behind the arc. Really good player.

8) FDU 82, Prairie View 76? Prairie View made 8-12 on arc in first half, led 41-34 at the break; they made 15-29 on arc for the game, but FDU?s PG Jenkins scored 20 second half points and the Knights move on to play Gonzaga in Salt Lake City Thursday. Fun game to watch.

7) Belmont 81, Temple 70? Belmont plays like the old Pete Carril/Princeton teams; they shoot the 3?s, they make backdoor cuts, they?re a unique team to play against.

6) #8-seed in the NBA?s Western Conference are the Clippers, who are 41-30; a 41-30 team would be the 6th seed in the East.

5) Rams signed Blake Bortles as their new backup QB; Bortles has started 73 NFL games, and was the Jaguars? QB when they made the playoffs in 2017.

4) I don?t understand why people bet on spring training baseball games; no one cares who wins, the pitchers might actually be working on one pitch and may stay away from his best stuff, but lines are posted every day, subs we?ve rarely heard of play the last half of the game and money changes hands. Go figure.

3) Wofford is a 3-point favorite over a Seton Hall team that went 9-9 in the Big East; that alone should get coach Mike Young into the top 3 in national Coach of the Year voting.

2) Damon Jones played 12 years in the NBA and was later an assistant coach with the Cavaliers when they won the 2016 NBA title. In his playing days, Jones played for 10 different teams in his dozen years in the league. This is a guy who should write a book.

1) Former NBA star Walt (Clyde) Frazier is 73 years old now: he is a New York City icon who led the Knicks to two NBA titles in the 70?s, and to this day he works Knicks? games on MSG Network. He generally isn?t very controversial, but he does speak the truth.

Sunday afternoon, when the Knicks played the Lakers, Frazier was critical of Lebron James because Lebron was sitting away from his teammates on the bench during a timeout near the end of a game the Lakers wound up losing by a point. Candid comments; good stuff.

Monday night during the Knicks-Raptors game, Frazier told Mike Breen that he was surprised his comments got so much attention, but criticism is unusual to hear in these politically correct times, and it was great to hear, because it was warranted.

Lightning edge Capitals 5-4 in overtime for 6th straight win
March 20, 2019
By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) Andrei Vasilevskiy made a franchise-record 54 saves, Nikita Kucherov scored twice and the NHL-leading Tampa Bay Lightning won their sixth consecutive game, beating the Washington Capitals 5-4 in overtime Wednesday night in a potential playoff preview.

Victor Hedman scored 3:01 into overtime to keep the Lightning rolling in their first game since clinching the Presidents' Trophy and home-ice advantage throughout the playoffs.

Vasilevskiy was on top of his game as Washington set a franchise record with 58 shots. He rebounded in the overtime after allowing Evgeny Kuznetsov to tie the score with 52.6 seconds left in regulation.

Kucherov's goals came on the power play and gave him 37 overall this season and increased his league-leading point total to 119.

Anthony Cirelli and Steven Stamkos also scored for the Lightning. Stamkos added two assists. The Lightning's league-leading power play went 3 for 3, and their penalty kill was 5 for 6, thanks in large part to Vasilevskiy.

Lars Eller, Carl Hagelin and T.J. Oshie scored for the Capitals, who are trying to hold on to first place in the Metropolitan Division. Braden Holtby allowed five goals on 28 shots as the Lightning beat the Capitals for the second time in five days.

MAPLE LEAFS 4, SABRES 2

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - John Tavares and Auston Matthews each had a goal and assist, and Toronto won for just the second time in six games in beating Buffalo.

Mitchell Marner and Zach Hyman also scored and the Maple Leafs inched to within four points of the idle Boston Bruins in the race for second place in the Atlantic Division standings. Garret Sparks stopped 22 shots for Toronto, which was playing on consecutive nights after a 3-0 loss at Nashville.

Casey Mittelstadt and Alexander Nylander scored for Buffalo, which dropped to 1-7-1 in its past nine.

Remember the final basketball scenes in the movie Hoosiers? Which college still plays its home games in that arena?

Wednesday?s quiz
Philadelphia Eagles have played in three Super Bowls; Ron Jaworski, Donovan McNabb, Nick Foles started those games at QB for the Eagles.

Tuesday?s quiz
Penguins are the NHL team that has the longest active streak of consecutive years in the playoffs, making it the last dozen seasons.

******************************

Thursday?s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud??

13) I?m not fond of the baseball season starting at 5:30am on another continent.

If it wasn?t the A?s playing, I?d just sleep thru it and watch the replay later on. Only positive note about all this is that the last time Oakland played over in Japan, they wound up winning their division that year (2012).

12) Syracuse will be without starting PG Frank Howard when it plays Baylor Thursday; Howard was suspended for violating an athletic department policy. Howard scored 28 points against Duke in the ACC tournament last week.

11) Over/under betting line on largest margin of victory in first round of NCAA tournament Thursday/Friday: 37.5 points.

10) North Dakota State 78, North Carolina Central 74? Both teams shot over 40% on arc in this game. Bison bench outscored NC Central?s 17-0, now advances to get crushed by Duke Friday.

9) Arizona State 74, St John?s 65? This was an awful game; Red Storm starts three juniors and a senior, but they?re not good- they went 9-13 in last 22 games, after going 12-0 vs non-conference schedule #327. Chris Mullin seems like a good guy, but is a suspect coach.

Bobby Hurley continues to be an overbearing jerk on the sidelines; he got a technical near the end of the first half, when his team was up 15; you could tell the ref just got sick of listening to him carp constantly about everything.

8) Brooklyn Nets were down 25 in the 4th quarter Tuesday, rallied to win in Sacramento, just the 4th time in the shot clock era that has happened.

7) Been a rough 14 months for former U of San Diego basketball coach Lamont Smith; last year, he got into a fracas with a girlfriend during a Toreros? road trip, which isn?t so bad, except that he was married at the time. He was shown the door before the season ended.

This week, Smith was named in that big college admissions scandal; now an assistant coach at UTEP, Smith resigned from that job Wednesday.

6) Norfolk State 80, Alabama 79 OT? Big win for MEAC over an SEC team; Jamerson scored 25 points off the bench for the Spartans, making 7-13 behind the arc.

5) Harvard 71, Georgetown 68? Hoyas played this game in McDonough Gym, an old gym on campus that looks like a pretty nice high school gym. Georgetown is 34-29 in two years under Patrick Ewing, 14-22 in Big East games.

4) Happy birthday to the greatest defenseman ever, Bobby Orr, who turned 71 Wednesday. A friend of my parents gave me a subscription to Sports Illustrated for my 9th birthday, and the first issue that arrived had Bobby Orr on the cover, which made me a big Bruins fan.

Bad knees shortened his career, but when he rushed the puck from behind the net, the crowd at Boston Garden would buzz. Bruins won the Stanley Cup in ?70 and ?72. Happy birthday!!!!

3) QB Tate Martell bolted from Ohio State to Miami, will be eligible this fall; kids who don?t start don?t stick around very much these days.

2) White Sox signed OF prospect Eloy Jimenez to a 6-year, $43M contract, despite fact that Jimenez hasn?t played in a major league game yet. If he is as good as everyone says, this will wind up being a tremendous bargain for the Pale Hose.

Tampa Bay signed utility guy Brandon Lowe to a 6-year deal with at least $24M; Lowe still qualifies as a rookie; he had 129 AB?s in 43 games last year, hitting .233 with six HR?s, six doubles, 25 RBIs. He made 24 starts at second base, 11 in center field and five in right field.

1) Alex Bregman signed a 6-year, $100M extension with the Astros, as every AL West team but the A?s spends a load of cash. A?s used their first round pick last June on a quarterback, which would be great, if they were a football team.

Cat vs. Dog

The Arizona Coyotes are trying to find their way into the Western Conference playoffs, while the Florida Panthers are likely going to have to settle for a spoiler role. Technically, the Panthers are not yet eliminated, but they're seven games out of the last wild-card spot with nine games left to play, so they're running on fumes.

The Panthers are actually pretty healthy favorites in this one, sitting in the -130 neighborhood. The Coyotes are 4-1 in their past five as an underdog between +110 and +150, and they're 10-3 in the past 13 games against teams with a losing overall record. They have won five of the past seven against Atlantic Division teams, too. The Panthers are relishing the role of spoiler while not giving up down the stretch. They're 4-1 in the past five, and 23-9 in their past 32 as a favorite between -110 and -150. However, the Cats are playing in their fourth game in six days, and they're just 3-11 in the past 14 in the fourth game of a 4-in-6 situation. Arizona is 0-4 in their past four skates in Sunrise, though, and the home team has cashed in nine of the past 10 in this series.

Total bettors might like the 'under', too. The under is 9-3-1 in the past 13 in this series, while hitting in five of the past six meetings in South Florida. The under is 7-1-1 in Arizona's past nine against the Atlantic Division, while going 4-1 in the past five road games. For the Panthers, it's been all about the 'over'. The over is 6-1-1 in their past eight home games, and 12-4-1 in the past 17 overall.

Looking Ahead

Thursday, March 21

Tampa Bay at Carolina:
The Lightning present a difficult challenge for the Hurricanes, who are looking to skate into the postseason for the first time since 2009. Tampa Bay is 37-14 in the past 51 road games, although they're playing on no rest after skating in Washington on Wednesday. That's OK, as the Lightning are 5-2 in the past seven on no rest. The Hurricanes had an emotional shootout win against the Penguins on Tuesday, and they're now 4-1 in the past five at home. They're 25-10 in the past 35 overall, too. However, they have struggled with Tampa over the years, going just 4-12 in the past 16 at home while cashing in only six of the past 26 meetings overall.

Colorado at Dallas:
A game with huge playoff implications in the Western Conference will be this battle in the Metroplex. The Avs have gone cold at the most inopportune time, cashing in just 12 of their past 37 games. They're also just 5-14 in the past 19 against winning teams, too. The Stars have had amazing goaltender play from Ben Bishop lately, as he keeps them in the playoff hunt. The Stars are 7-3 in the past 10 games overall, and 5-1 in the past six against the Central Division. The Avs are just 1-6 in the past seven trips to Dallas, and the home team is 8-2 in the past 10 in this series.

San Jose at Los Angeles:
The Sharks enter this game on a three-game skid, but they're still 22-10 over the past 32 ouytings. The Sharks have also cashed in nine of their past 11 road games. San Jose has dominated Los Angeles over the years, at least in the regular season. They're 5-1 in the past six meetings, and 10-1 in the past 11 trips to L.A., too. The road team is 7-2 across the past nine. The under is 10-1-5 in the past 16 meetings in this series, while going 3-0-3 in the past six tangles at Staples.

Friday, March 22

San Jose at Anaheim:
Not only have the Sharks dominated the Kings, but they have dominated the other Southern California hockey club in recent seasons as well. The Sharks are a blistering 8-1 over the past nine meetings in this series, while winning six consecutive skates on 'The Pond'. The road team has connected in seven of the past 10, while the favorite is 4-1 in the past five meetings overall. The over is 3-1-2 in the past six meetings, but the under is 6-2-4 in the past 12 in Anaheim.

Saturday, March 23

N.Y. Islanders at Philadelphia:
The Islanders would love to put a nail in the coffin of their rivals from Philadelphia, and they're in the best position to do it. The away team has won all three previous meetings in this series this season. The Flyers have actually outscored the Islanders 10-9 in the three meetings with the underdog hitting in each of the past three battles. The 'over' has connected in two of three this season, and seven of the past eight meetings in this series, too.

N.Y. Rangers at Toronto:
The Maple Leafs host a thorn in their side, the Rangers. In the previous two meetings this season the home team has won. Over the past eight meetings the underdog has won in six of the meetings, and the road team has come away victorious in five of the previous eight meetings in this series. Toronto has outscored New York just 28-23 over the past eight meeting, or an average of 6.4 goals per contest.

Anaheim at Los Angeles:
This SoCal battle isn't as meaningful as past seasons, but you can expect it will still be a contentious affair. Seven of the past 10 meetings in this series have been decided by just one goal, and the 'under' is 3-0-1 across the past four in this series. The favorite is also an impressive 8-2 in the past 10 showdowns, although the 'dog cashed in the most recent meeting when the Kings won 3-2 in Anaheim on March 10 with the Ducks favored -200.

Sunday, March 24

Columbus at Vancouver:
The Canucks have really been a major obstacle for the Blue Jackets in recent seasons, as Vancouver has won four in a row in the series, cashing as the underdog in each of the meetings. The Canucks haven't had a lot of success across the board, but they've outscored the Jackets 16-8 during the four-game span, with the road team winning eight of the past nine meetings in this series dating back to Nov. 22, 2013.
