Devils beat sliding Coyotes 2-1 in shootout
March 23, 2019
By The Associated Press

DENVER (AP) Colin Wilson scored his first goal in more than a month, Philipp Grubauer stopped 29 shots and the playoff-chasing Colorado Avalanche earned their fourth straight win by holding off the Chicago Blackhawks 4-2 on Saturday.

J.T. Compher and Sven Andrighetto also scored. Derick Brassard added an empty-netter as the Avalanche moved into position for the second wild card in the Western Conference.

Colorado had an array of forwards step up with All-Star Mikko Rantanen missing the game with an upper-body injury. Wilson came through with his first goal since Feb. 7.

Grubauer kept up his torrid play by winning his fourth straight start. He's allowed four goals over stretch.

Jonathan Toews and Erik Gustafsson scored for Chicago, and Corey Crawford stopped 21 shots.

BLUES 4, LIGHTNING 3

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Vladimir Tarasenko had a goal and an assist, Jordan Binnington made 39 saves, and the Blues snapped Tampa Bay's seven-game win streak.

Robert Thomas, Alexander Steen and Brayden Schenn also scored for St. Louis, which earned its third consecutive win. Binnington improved to 20-4-1. He has won his last four starts and seven of his last nine overall.

Alex Killorn, Brayden Point and Steven Stamkos scored for the Lightning.

CANADIENS 7, SABRES 4

MONTREAL (AP) - Brendan Gallagher had two goals and an assist, and Montreal earned its third straight win.

Max Domi and Tomas Tatar each had a goal and two assists as the Canadiens (40-28-7) moved three points ahead of idle Columbus in the race for the second wild card in the Eastern Conference. Artturi Lehkonen, Andrew Shaw and Paul Byron also scored.

Making his seventh start in a row, Montreal star Carey Price made 23 saves.

Sam Reinhart, Alexander Nylander, Marco Scandella and Jack Eichel scored for the Sabres (31-34-9), who were officially eliminated from playoff contention. Carter Hutton stopped 37 shots.

HURRICANES 5, WILD 1

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Teuvo Teravainen had a goal and two assists, sending the Hurricanes to the win.

Jordan Staal, Brett Pesce, Andrei Svechnikov and Lucas Wallmark also scored for Carolina, which picked up its fifth win in seven games to keep its hold on the Eastern Conference's first wild-card spot. Petr Mrazek stopped 24 shots.

The Hurricanes, who own the NHL's longest playoff drought at nine seasons, have a five-point cushion with eight games to play.

Eric Staal scored and Devyn Dubnyk made 28 saves for the Wild, who dropped out of the eighth and final playoff spot in the West with the loss and Colorado's 4-2 win over Chicago.

JETS 5, PREDATORS 0

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Kyle Connor had three goals and an assist in his first NHL hat trick, helping Winnipeg clinch a playoff spot.

Kevin Hayes had a goal and three assists for the Jets, and Andrew Copp also scored. Connor Hellebuyck made 33 saves for his second shutout of the season.

Pekka Rinne stopped 38 shots for the Predators, who are in second place in the Central Division, four points back of the Jets.

BRUINS 7, PANTHERS 3

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Patrice Bergeron, David Pastrnak, Brad Marchand and Zdeno Chara each had a goal and an assist as Boston clinched a playoff berth.

Steve Kampfer, Karson Kuhlman and Noel Acciari also scored for the Bruins. Jaroslav Halak stopped 31 shots and also had an assist as Boston won its fourth straight.

Vincent Trocheck, Mike Hoffman and Jayce Hawryluk scored for the Panthers, and Sam Montembeault finished with 32 saves.

The Bruins took control with five goals in the second period.

DEVILS 2, COYOTES 1, SO

NEWARK, N.J. - Blake Coleman and Pavel Zacha scored in the shootout and New Jersey hurt Arizona's playoff chances, sending the Coyotes to their fourth straight loss.

Drew Stafford scored in regulation for New Jersey. MacKenzie Blackwood made 23 saves in regulation and stopped five of six chances in the shootout.

Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored for Arizona, and Darcy Kuemper had 31 saves.

The Coyotes had two great chances on a power play in overtime, with Derek Stepan and Clayton Keller each hitting the post.

ISLANDERS 4, FLYERS 2

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Josh Bailey scored twice 1:23 apart in the third period, stopping a 12-game drought and leading the Islanders to the win.

Nick Leddy and Brock Nelson also scored for New York, which had dropped two in a row and three of four overall. Robin Lehner made 22 stops.

The Islanders (43-25-7) moved within a point of idle Washington for first place in the Metropolitan Division.

Robert Hagg and Shayne Gostisbehere scored for Philadelphia, and Carter Hart made 36 saves.

The Flyers (36-31-8) had won two of three. But the home loss against New York is a big blow to their fleeting chances of rallying to the second wild card in the Eastern Conference.

RANGERS 2, MAPLE LEAFS 1

TORONTO (AP) - Ryan Strome scored 1:48 into overtime, and the Rangers stopped a five-game losing streak.

Pavel Buchnevich also scored for New York, and Alexandar Georgiev finished with 44 saves.

Zach Hyman scored for the Maple Leafs and Frederik Andersen stopped 26 shots.

On the winning goal, Andersen made an amazing save on Boo Nieves on a 2-on-1 but the puck went to Strome, who stuffed it in from the left side of the net.

SENATORS 4, OILERS 3, OT

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - Brady Tkachuk scored 2:09 into overtime for his second goal of the game, lifting Ottawa to the victory.

Bobby Ryan and Brian Gibbons also scored for the Senators (26-43-6), who snapped a two-game losing streak. Ottawa has the fewest points in the NHL with 58.

Alex Chiasson, Connor McDavid and Colby Cave scored for the Oilers (33-34-8), who have lost three of four.

PENGUINS 3, STARS 2

DALLAS (AP) - Jared McCann scored twice, including the go-ahead goal on a spinning short-handed play in the third period, and the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Stars.

McCann has 11 goals in 26 games since coming over in a trade with Florida, and now leads the Penguins with three short-handed goals. He has four overall this season.

Jake Guentzel opened the scoring with his team-leading 38th goal for Pittsburgh in the first period. The Penguins stayed even with the New York Islanders for second place in the Metropolitan Division with 93 points, a point behind Washington.

Tyler Seguin and Andrew Cogliano scored for Dallas.

RED WINGS 3, GOLDEN KNIGHTS 2, OT

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Anthony Mantha scored the tying goal midway through the third period and got the game-winner 19 seconds into overtime, lifting the Detroit Red Wings past the Vegas Golden Knights.

Luke Glendening also scored for Detroit and Jimmy Howard stopped 28 shots to improve to 3-5-0 in his last eight starts.

On the winning goal, Vegas' Reilly Smith - playing in his 500th career game - turned the puck over right in front of the net, where Dylan Larkin fed Mantha, who poked home his 19th of the season, and first game-winning goal.

Smith and Cody Eakin scored for the Golden Knights, and Malcolm Subban finished with 27 saves while falling to 13-2-0 in two seasons at T-Mobile Arena.

KINGS 4, DUCKS 3, SO

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Anze Kopitar scored the only goal in the shootout, and the Kings beat the Anaheim Ducks in a low-stakes edition of the Freeway Faceoff.

Carter Rowney put the Ducks ahead with a short-handed goal midway through the third period, but Carl Grundstrom tied it for the Kings with 3:53 left in regulation.

Kopitar then made a one-handed drag move to beat Ryan Miller in the second round of the shootout. Although the Kings are likely to finish in last place in the Western Conference, they improved to 3-0-0 against the Ducks to win the season series against their rivals for the first time since 2012-13.

Kyle Clifford and Jeff Carter also scored for the Kings. Cam Fowler and Rickard Rakell also had goals for the Ducks.

FLAMES 3, CANUCKS 1

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) - Mark Giordano had a goal and two assists, leading Calgary Flames to the win.

Garnet Hathaway and Andrew Mangiapane also scored, and Mike Smith made 27 saves for the Flames, who snapped the Canucks' three-game winning streak.

Brock Boeser had a power-play goal for the Canucks, who are six points behind Colorado for the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference. Jacob Markstrom had 28 saves.

*************************************

Sunday?s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday??

13) Thursday in Las Vegas, a courageous human wagered $500,000 on Michigan on the money line, which means all they have to do is win, no point spread; when Wolverines beat Montana, he banked $27,777.

On Friday, he took that $527,777 and put it all on Texas Tech on the money line, where he collected $37,698. Didn?t have to sweat in either game, either.

12) LSU 69, Maryland 67? Tony Benford is the interim coach at LSU; he was coach at North Texas for five years, going 62-95, 30-60 in conference games.

He looks a lot smarter coaching the players he recruited for LSU. Let?s say the Tigers make a run to the Final Four; would Benford become this generation?s Steve Fisher? Fisher took over the Michigan squad just before the NCAA?s in 1989 and won the national title with them, getting himself the full-time job the next year.

11) Kentucky 62, Wofford 56? You look at Wofford?s success this year, and fact that Furman, NC-Greensboro and East Tennessee State are all solid programs, and you?d wish ESPN would show some SoCon games on national TV during the winter.

I know the games are all on ESPN+, but they deserve national recognition.

Wofford?s best 3-point shooter is Fletcher Magee; he made more 3-pointers than anyone ever in college ball, but he was 0-12 behind the arc in this game. He was 7-12 against Seton Hall.

10) Michigan 64, Florida 49? When you take 26 3-pointers and two foul shots, it is really hard to win. Have to make an awful lot of those 3?s. Gators were 9-26 on arc, 2-2 on foul line.

Teams that advance deep into the tournament often get some help along the way; Florida beat Nevada in first round, giving Michigan an easier 2nd round opponent.

9) Florida State 90, Murray State 62? Seminoles are deep, athletic and on a mission, after one of their teammates lost his dad this week. FSU won 16 of its last 18 games- their next game vs Gonzaga will be very interesting.

Ja Morant is about to become really rich; Murray State had a great 28-5 season. Racers went 54-11 in Morant?s two seasons; they were 33-31 in the two seasons before he got there.

8) Gonzaga 83, Baylor 71? Zags are in Sweet 16 for fifth year in a row; they?re this generation?s version of Jerry Tarkanian?s UNLV teams? they dominate a cruddy league, and play well on the national stage in pre-conference games and in March. They also get a lot of transfers, because kids don?t want to play on losing teams.

End of a unique college career for Baylor?s Makai Mason, who played in NCAA?s for two teams, Yale/Baylor. When he was at Yale, he scored 31 points AGAINST Baylor when the Bulldogs upset Baylor in an NCAA tournament game in 2016.

7) Michigan State 70, Minnesota 50? Another case where a first round upset gave the favorite in the second round an easier game. Gophers went 2-22 on the arc, didn?t offer much resistance.

I would be in favor of a rule where only eight teams from any conference can make the NCAA?s; if you can?t finish 8th in your league, how can you be allowed to play for a national title? This will never happen, because the big $$$ leagues have clout, but it would be a good idea.

6) Purdue 87, Villanova 61? Boilermakers have two guards who take a ton of 3?s; Carson Edwards has taken 347 3?s (34.6%), Ryan Cline has taken 251 (40.6%). They combined to make 13-24 in this game, a surprisingly easy win.

Major tank job by Villanova; Purdue opened 2nd half on a 16-0 run. Wildcats won two of last three national titles, but other than those two years, they?ve lost their last five second round games. Big East has been mercifully eliminated from this tournament.

5) Auburn 89, Kansas 75? Tigers scored 28 points in first 7:57 of this game, made Charles Barkley?s night by whipping the Jayhawks. This game was 51-25 at halftime!!!!

There are rumors that Bill Self is going to try his hand in the NBA next season, especially if the NCAA is nipping at Kansas? heels.

4) Justin Verlander got a 2-year, $66M extension from the Astros Saturday, so it was a good day for him and his wife, Kate Upton.

3) After the first round of the NCAA?s, there were only nine perfect brackets on ESPN?s contest, out of 17.2 million entries.

2) A?s-Mariners played 12 innings in Tokyo Thursday; Japanese pro baseball has tie games- wonder what the Japanese fans think about playing games until there is a winner, the way it is done here?

1) The 68 teams in the NCAA tournament represent 37 different states.

Lehner, Islanders beat Coyotes 2-0
March 24, 2019
By The Associated Press

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) Jordan Eberle and Brock Nelson scored to back Robin Lehner's fifth shutout of the season as the New York Islanders beat the Arizona Coyotes 2-0 Sunday.

Lehner stopped 31 shots to help the Islanders win for the second time in two days and keep pace with first place Washington in the Metropolitan Division.

Starting for the second straight day, Lehner had nine saves in the first period, and 11 each in the second and third to improve to 22-12-5 this season.

Darcy Kuemper finished with 24 saves as the Coyotes lost their fifth straight (0-3-2), and finished 0-3-1 on a four-game trip. Arizona hasn't won since March 14 against Anaheim at home, where there will play four of their last six games as they try to make the playoffs for the first time since 2012.

CAPITALS 3, FLYERS 1

WASHINGTON (AP) - Braden Holtby made 35 saves and Washington beat Philadelphia to snap a two-game skid.

Holtby helped Washington kill off three of four Philadelphia power plays, and that allowed the Capitals to avoid what would have been their first three-game losing streak since January.

Tom Wilson, Travis Boyd and Jakub Vrana scored for the defending Stanley Cup champions.

Jakub Voracek scored a power-play goal and Brian Elliott made 27 saves for Philadelphia, which made a run from near the bottom of the league before running out of gas.

BLACKHAWKS 2, AVALANCHE 1, OT

CHICAGO (AP) - Duncan Keith scored 1:23 into overtime to give Chicago the win over Colorado.

The defenseman took a feed from Brandon Saad, bulled his way down left wing, shrugged off a check from Nathan MacKinnon and beat goaltender Phillipp Grubauer between the legs to snap the Blackhawks' three-game losing streak. Chicago pulled within five points of Colorado for the second Western Conference wild card.

Artem Anisimov had a power-play goal for the Blackhawks. Corey Crawford made 19 saves.

Alexander Kerfoot scored on a 5-on-3 power play for the Avalanche, who had won four straight.

HURRICANES 2, CANADIENS 1, OT

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Andrei Svechnikov scored with 1:45 left in overtime as Carolina rallied to beat Montreal in a matchup with Eastern Conference playoff implications.

Carolina's Trevor van Riemsdyk scored the tying goal with 5:39 remaining, and Svechnikov ended it with a wrist shot in the extra session. Curtis McElhinney stopped 28 shots.

With the win, Carolina remained alone in the first wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. Montreal squandered a chance to move into a tie with Carolina with a win.

Paul Byron scored in the first period, and Carey Price stopped 38 of 40 shots as Montreal had its three-game winning streak snapped.

Tweet of the Day
?In the kindest way possible, the man is crazy. He?s got enough energy for like 10 people, all bottled up into one little human.?
Washington Huskies? G Matisse Thybulle, talking about coach Mike Hopkins

When was the last time a Big 14 basketball team won the national championship?

Liberty University is located in Lynchburg, Virginia.

*******************************

Monday?s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Sunday??

13) Duke 77, Central Florida 76? When you lose a game like this and your season or career end, you will remember that game for the rest of your life. UCF played its hearts out, the game was there for them to take but it slipped away. Their effort was exceptional.

Duke was 309th in country in 3-point %age before this game; they made 10-25 Sunday, and scored off a missed free throw with 0:09 left to win this interesting game.

Aubrey Dawkins scored 32 points for UCF; this game had to be personal for him, living in Durham until he was 11 years old when his father was an assistant coach at Duke. He played at Michigan, then UCF; he was excellent in this game.

12) Tennessee 83, Iowa 77 OT? Volunteers led this game 44-19, so if you laid eight points, this was a sad ending. If you had the under, this was a sad ending. If you had Iowa and the over, then be thankful. Tennessee survived and it advances, and that is all that matters this time of year.

For the first time since 1996 the SEC has four teams in the Sweet 16. Tennessee has zero points this season from freshmen, which in modern times is really unusual.

CBS had the father of one of the Iowa players miked during this game; this is a bad idea. Parents should be seen and not heard during these games. Let the kids be the show.

11) North Carolina 81, Washington 59? Tar Heels are in Sweet 16 for 4th time in five years; this wasn?t a good game. Huskies shot 36.7% from the floor.

Washington is 48-21 in Mike Hopkins? first two years as coach, so things are looking up for them, though they graduate three starters this spring.

10) Texas Tech 78, Buffalo 58? Bulls hadn?t lost since February 1st; over last six years, they?re 138-62, 75-31 in MAC games. Five of their top seven players graduate; will coach Nate Oats leave for green$r pa$ture$? Now would be a good time.

Texas Tech moves on to Anaheim, will play Michigan in the next round.

9) Virginia Tech 67, Liberty 58? Hokies beat Duke 77-72 at home Feb 26; now they get another shot at the Blue Devils Friday night in Washington. Justin Robinson played 29:00 Sunday, so his foot must be OK. He looked a little gimpy late in Friday?s game.

Liberty has a 5-9 freshman named Darius McGhee who played 27:00, and was 5-11 from floor, all 3-pointers, with no assists. Sounds like a good gig, take a 3-pointer every 2:00 or so.

8) Virginia 63, Oklahoma 51?Starting center Jack Salt isn?t playing much; he has back/ankle issues. Cavaliers are basically playing six guys; Kyle Guy was 0-10 on the arc in this game but Virginia still covered a double digit spread.

Oklahoma finished 20-14 this year, after going 18-14 LY, when they had Trae Young. Go figure.

7) Houston 74, Ohio State 59? Cougars move on and play Kentucky Friday in Kansas City. Indiana fans who might be watching will be conflicted; they didn?t like Kelvin Sampson much when he was coach of the Hoosiers, but they really dislike Kentucky.

6) Oregon 73, Cal-Irvine 54? Ducks are in Sweet 16 for third time in last four years; they missed their first ten shots of 2nd half as Irvine came back from down 12 at the half to the game, but Oregon pulled away late. Kenny Wooten had seven blocks; he is a force in the paint.

5) Coaching carousel:
? Ron Hunter bolts Georgia State for Tulane. Interesting decision; his Georgia State team would?ve clobbered Tulane this year, but AAC is a step up from the Sun Belt.
? California fires Wyking Jones; Cal alum Jason Kidd is a possible replacement.

4) Bryce Harper is from Las Vegas and goes to some UNLV basketball games in the winter; he has posted stuff on social media imploring UNLV to hire Memphis assistant coach Mike Miller as its new basketball coach.

3) Two baseball players have had ten seasons with 20+ homers and 20+ stolen bases; they are father/son, Bobby and Barry Bonds. Bobby Abreu is next, with nine.

2) They had 38,031 fans in Anaheim Stadium Sunday night for Dodgers-Angels exhibition game; they drew 23,967 in Oakland for a Giants-A?s game. Baseball season starts Thursday; we?ll have information every day from then until October.

Russell Martin caught all eight innings for the Dodgers, which is really unusual for a spring training game.

1) Cubs-Colorado exhibition game drew 14,022 fans Saturday night in Arizona. These games are more affordable and to lot of people, their best chance to see big league baseball.

Murray stays unbeaten in NYC as Penguins top Rangers 5-2
March 25, 2019
By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) Teddy Blueger scored two goals, Matt Murray made 33 saves and the Pittsburgh Penguins surged to a 5-2 win over the New York Rangers on Monday night.

Justin Schultz, Nick Bjugstad and Matt Cullen also scored for Pittsburgh. Phil Kessel and Marcus Pettersson each added two assists.

Murray improved to 6-0-0 against the Rangers in the regular season and 5-0-0 at Madison Square Garden.

Pittsburgh pulled into a tie with the New York Islanders for second place in the Metropolitan Division with 95 points. Both teams trail Washington by one point for first.

Brendan Lemieux and Vinni Lettieri scored for the Rangers. Alexandar Georgiev, coming off a 44-save effort in a 2-1 overtime win Saturday night at Toronto, stopped 31 shots.

KINGS 3, FLAMES 0

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - Backup goaltender Jack Campbell made 42 saves in his second shutout of the season and Los Angeles beat Western Conference-leading Calgary.

Jonny Brodzinski and defenseman Derek Forbort scored, and Tyler Toffoli added an empty-net goal for Los Angeles, which won its third straight.

Campbell earned his first win since Feb. 5 for the Kings, who won't qualify for the postseason.

Flames goaltender Mike Smith made 18 saves.

MAPLE LEAFS 7, PANTHERS 5

TORONTO (AP) - John Tavares had the first four-goal game of his career, leading Toronto to the win over Florida.

Zach Hyman had a goal and two assists, and Patrick Marleau and Jake Muzzin also scored for Toronto. Mitch Marner had three assists, while Morgan Rielly and William Nylander each finished with two assists. Frederik Andersen made 31 saves for the Leafs.

Jayce Hawryluk scored twice and added an assist for Florida. Jonathan Huberdeau added two goals and Mike Matheson also scored. Evgenii Dadanov and Mike Hoffman each had two assists.

Rookie Sam Montembeault allowed two goals on four shots before getting pulled just over four minutes into game. Roberto Luongo made 28 saves in relief.

LIGHTNING 5, BRUINS 4

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Steven Stamkos scored twice and finished with four points, and Tampa Bay became the fourth NHL team to win at least 59 games in a season, rallying from two goals down to beat Boston.

With five games left, Tampa Bay (59-14-4) has a chance to surpass the NHL record of 62 wins, set by the 1995-96 Detroit Red Wings. The only other franchise to win at least 59 was the Montreal Canadiens in 1976-77 (60 wins) and 1977-78 (59).

Anthony Cirelli scored the winning goal with 52.4 seconds left as Tampa Bay won when trailing after the second period for the ninth time this season.

Nikita Kucherov scored his 38th goal to record his 121st point of the year, the second-most by a Russian player in NHL history behind Alex Mogilny, who had 127 in 1992-93. Victor Hedman also scored.

Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 13 shots for Tampa Bay.

Brad Marchand scored twice while Brandon Carlo and Charlie Coyle also scored for Boston. Tuukka Rask finished with 23 saves.

DEVILS 3, SABRES 1

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Cory Schneider overcame an embarrassing early, bad-hop goal from center ice, made 45 saves and got the benefit of having a game-tying, third-period tally nullified for goaltender interference in leading New Jersey past Buffalo.

Blake Coleman and Pavel Zacha scored power-play goals as New Jersey won its second straight and for the fourth time in 14 games (4-9-1). Miles Wood added an empty-net goal on a length-of-the-ice shot.

Sam Reinhart scored his 20th of the season for the Sabres and had his 21st taken away by a Devils' challenge. Linus Ullmark made 18 saves as the Sabres fell to 1-9-1 in their last 11.

PREDATORS 1, WILD 0

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Juuse Saros made 29 saves for his third shutout of the season and Ryan Johansen scored a short-handed goal to lead Nashville past Minnesota.

With the victory, the Predators clinched a spot in the Western Conference playoffs. They are in second place in the Central Division, two points behind Winnipeg.

Devan Dubnyk stopped 18 of 19 shots for the Wild, who remain two points out of the last playoff spot in the West with five games to play.

STARS 5, JETS 2

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Tyler Seguin and Radek Faksa each scored a pair of goals and Dallas snapped a two-game losing streak.

Esa Lindell also scored and Alexander Radulov had two assists for the Stars (39-31-6), who maintained their hold on the first wild-card spot in the Western Conference.

Ben Bishop stopped 21 shots.

Kyle Connor had a goal and an assist and Patrik Laine ended a 12-game scoring drought with his 30th goal of the season.

Connor Hellebuyck made 32 saves for the Jets (45-27-4), who are in first place in the Central Division, two points ahead of Nashville, with a game in hand.

BLUES 3, GOLDEN KNIGHTS 1

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Ivan Barbashev, Zach Sanford and Ryan O'Reilly scored to help St. Louis beat Vegas.

Jordan Binnington made 24 saves for his 21st victory of the season. He is one win short of matching Jake Allen's record set in 2014-15 for the most by a Blues rookie goaltender.

William Karlsson scored for Vegas, which could have clinched a playoff berth with a win.

RED WINGS 3, SHARKS 2

Who is the oldest player in the major leagues right now?

Monday?s quiz
2000 was the last time a Big 14 basketball team won the national championship, when Michigan State won. Maryland won in 2002, but they were in the ACC back then.

Sunday?s quiz
In 1990, Michigan lost 149-115 to Loyola Marymount, the year after it won the national championship, the worst loss ever by a defending national champ.

*****************************

Tuesday?s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but??

13) Duke beat Central Florida by a point Sunday. In the 25:00 Tacko Fall played, UCF was +16; they were -17 in the 15:00 he didn?t play. Pretty telling stat.

12) Denver Broncos suggested the NFL borrow the AAF?s version of onside kicks where a team can go for an ?onside kick? by running a 4th-and-12 play from their own 28-yard line after a score, if they?re down by 17+ points, or trailing with 5:00 or less left in the game.

After the 4th-and-12 play, the game just continues from there.

NFL competition committee voted 7-1 in favor of this rule; Giants? owner John Mara was the one vote against it, saying ?What are we, the Arena Football League??

24 of the 32 owners would have to vote ?Yes? for it to become an actual rule.

11) From MetsMerizedOnline.com:

Mets owner Fred Wilpon is buying back a 12% stake of the team for about $180M, which values the Mets at about $1.5B, a lot less than the $2.1B Forbes magazine valued it at last year. If these numbers are right, thats a 28% decrease in value, in only one year.

The Wilpons now own 68% of the team, which is bad news for Mets fans everywhere.

10) Bears-Packers will be the Thursday night game in Week 1 of the NFL this season; this is the NFL?s 100th season, and Green Bay-Chicago is the league?s oldest rivalry.

New England will open at home on Sunday Night Football.

9) Milwaukee Brewers are playing couple of exhibition games against the Blue Jays in Montreal this week, but Ryan Braun forgot his passport, so he won?t be there. Whoops.

8) Ron Darling was talking on the Mets? game the other day about how the Seattle Mariners have it worse than any other baseball team, as far as travel goes, since Seattle is way up thee in the Pacific Northwest, pretty far away from all their opponents, except Oakland.

He was talking about Robinson Cano being 36 years old and how many games he will play this season. Darling said Cano should still be able to play 140 or so games, since the Mets? travel will be a lot less arduous than the Mariners? was.

7) Showtime has a 4-part series called Action airing this month, about the growth of legalized gambling. In the first show, a well-known professional gambler named Bill Krackomberger is profiled; they show him betting thousands of dollars ($3,300 a game) on several NFL games, yet he says that he probably cannot name 15 players in the NFL.

A friend confirmed that this is probably true. I?ve known of this guy for years as a sharp bettor; it is amazing to me that a guy can win betting the NFL but can?t at least name every starting QB int the league.

6) Johnny Manziel made his AAF debut for Memphis Sunday, going 3-5 for 48 yards passing, and running ball twice for 20 yards in his backup role. Starter Brandon Silvers won the game for Memphis, though, leading the game-tying drive in the last minute of regulation, then

Silvers, who played college ball at Troy, was 24-35 for 266 yards and two TDs.

That was the first overtime game in AAF history, by the way.

5) One thing I won?t miss about spring training ending; games where both teams are wearing the same color jersey.

4) When a player breaks his bat in a major league game, they actually sell the bat at concession stands in the stadium, and broken bats ain?t cheap.

I was in Philadelphia couple years ago, and was looking at the game-used items they sell there; jerseys, baseballs, bats, bases. Made the mistake of grabbing a bat by the barrel and got pine tar all over my hands. Sticky stuff.

3) In the last two weeks, Auburn won six games, counting the SEC tournament and then their two NCAA tournament wins. In the previous 13 years combined, Auburn had won a total of seven postseason games.

2) Jazz 125, Suns 92? Devin Booker scored 59 points in this one-sided game; Jimmer Fredette went 1-10 in 14:00 off the bench in his first NBA game in three years.

Booker stayed in the game in the last 0:20 with the Suns down 33, trying to get 60 points, but Utah fouled someone else intentionally so that he couldn?t get the chance.

1) If you follow comments that Celtics players/coaches have made this season, sounds like they?re all having a miserable season. Boston is 43-31, right now they?re the #5-seed in the East but you get the impression they won?t be too unhappy when the season ends, and they can all go their separate ways.
