Lightning beat Hurricanes 6-3 for 7th straight victory

LAS VEGAS (AP) Malcolm Subban stopped 20 shots for his first NHL shutout, William Karlsson and Reilly Smith each scored twice, and the Vegas Golden Knights beat the Winnipeg Jets 5-0 on Thursday night.

Tomas Nosek also scored for Vegas, which is 10-1 since losing to Winnipeg 6-3 in its final game before acquiring Mark Stone at the trade deadline.

Subban, whose shutout came in his 35th career start, has won two straight and seven of his last nine starts. He's also nearly unbeatable at T-Mobile Arena with a 13-1-0 record in two seasons.

Winnipeg dropped to 5-3-0 in the second game of back-to-backs this season.

Laurent Broissoit started in net for the Jets, but was pulled after allowing three goals. Connor Hellebuyck, who entered with 14 minutes left in the second period, allowed two goals and made 18 saves.

LIGHTNING 6, HURRICANES 3

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Ryan Callahan scored the tiebreaking goal midway through the third period, and the Tampa Bay picked up its seventh straight win.

Steven Stamkos had a goal and two assists and Tyler Johnson, Anthony Cirelli, Brayden Point and Ryan McDonagh all scored for the Lightning, who scored four unanswered goals in the third period to erase a 3-2 deficit.

Victor Hedman had three assists and Louis Domingue stopped 25 of 28 shots for his 13th win in his past 14 starts. Lightning forward Nikita Kucherov became the first player to reach 120 points in a season since 2006-07 with his assist on Johnson's first-period goal.

Nino Niederreiter, Dougie Hamilton and Jordan Staal scored for the Hurricanes. Curtis McElhinney made 26 saves.

CANADIENS 4, ISLANDERS 0

MONTREAL (AP) - Carey Price stopped 27 shots for his fourth shutout of the season and Montreal beat New York to remain in the hunt for an Eastern Conference playoff spot.

Joel Armia, Shea Weber, Jonathan Drouin and Jordan Weal also scored for the Canadiens (39-28-7), who won their second straight after dropping two in a row.

Thomas Greiss gave up four goals on 22 shots for the Islanders (42-25-7) before being pulled in the second period. Robin Lehner made 12 saves in relief.

FLYERS 3, BLACKHAWKS 1, SO

CHICAGO (AP) - Carter Hart made 40 saves and James van Reimsdyk snapped a tie in the third period, helping Philadelphia beat Chicago.

Corban Knight also scored and Sean Couturier added an empty-net goal as Philadelphia picked up a sorely needed victory after dropping three of four.

Erik Gustafsson scored, and Corey Crawford made 25 stops for Chicago (32-31-10), which missed out on a chance to gain ground in the race for the second wild card out West.

AVALANCHE 3, STARS 1

DALLAS (AP) - Philipp Grubauer made a season-high 44 saves, including 23 in the third period, defensemen Erik Johnson and Tyson Barrie scored and Colorado beat Dallas to make the Western Conference playoff race even tighter.

Grubauer has allowed only two goals while facing 104 shots and carrying Colorado on a three-game winning streak.

Carl Soderberg added an empty-net goal with 49 seconds left for the final margin, helping the Avalanche leapfrog idle Minnesota for eighth place in the conference standings.

Tyler Seguin scored the lone goal for Dallas with 5:01 to play. Goalie Ben Bishop's personal winning streak ended at six games.

BRUINS 5, DEVILS 1

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Patrice Bergeron scored twice and reached the 30-goal mark for the fifth time and streaking Boston beat injury-ravaged New Jersey to open a six-point lead over Toronto in the race for second place in the Atlantic Division.

David Pastrnak, Danton Heinen and David Backes also scored for the Bruins, who are 16-3-1 in their last 20 games. Tuukka Rask made 22 saves to improve to 18-2-3 in his last 23 games.

Drew Stafford scored for the Devils, ending a 34-game goal-scoring drought. Cory Schneider made 22 saves as New Jersey lost for the ninth time in 12 games (2-9-1).

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Aleksander Barkov scored two goals and Jonathan Huberdeau had three assists as Florida won for the first time in three games.

Mike Hoffman and MacKenzie Weegar also scored goals for the Panthers. Roberto Luongo made 32 saves and broke a five-game losing streak. Evgenii Dadonov added two assists.

Brad Richardson and Michael Grabner scored for the Coyotes, who lost their third straight. Darcy Kuemper stopped 18 shots.

BLUES 5, RED WINGS 2

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Ivan Barbashev recorded his first career NHL hat trick to lead St. Louis past Detroit.

Oskar Sundqvist and Pat Maroon also scored for the Blues, who have earned points in their last four games. Rookie Jordan Binnington made 20 saves, improving to 19-4-1.

Thomas Vanek scored twice and Jonathan Bernier made 19 saves for the Red Wings, who had their two-game winning streak snapped.

PENGUINS 2, PREDATORS 1, SO

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Sidney Crosby's goal in the shootout gave Pittsburgh a win over Nashville and ended the Penguins' three-game losing streak.

Bryan Rust scored in regulation for the Penguins, who moved into a second-place tie with the New York Islanders in the Metropolitan Division with 91 points each. Matt Murray made 27 saves.

Ryan Ellis scored for Nashville, which had its three-game winning streak snapped. Pekka Rinne made 31 saves in the loss as Nashville remained three points behind first-place Winnipeg in the Central Division.

FLAMES 5, SENATORS 1

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - Andrew Mangiapane, Garnet Hathaway and Matthew Tkachuk each had a goal and an assist As Calgary topped Ottawa in a game that matched the top team in the West against the team with the worst record in the East.

Mark Giordano scored Calgary's league-leading 18th short-handed goal and Mikael Backlund also scored for the Flames. Derek Ryan assisted on two goals. Mike Smith made 18 saves.

Dylan DeMelo scored for the Senators (25-43-6). Craig Anderson stopped 31 shots.

OILERS 4, BLUE JACKETS 1

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - Connor McDavid had a goal and an assist, Leon Draisaitl had three assists as Edmonton snapped a two-game skid with a win over Columbus.

Kyle Brodziak, Zack Kassian and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins also scored for Edmonton.

David Savard had the only goal for the Blue Jackets, who have lost three in a row.

Columbus' loss coupled with Montreal's 4-0 shutout of the New York Islanders earlier in the night put the Canadiens into the Eastern Conference's second wild-card spot, one point ahead of the Blue Jackets.

Minnesota 86, Louisville 76? Coming into this game, Gophers scored 22.2% of their points behind arc, 4th-least in country; they were 11-27 on arc in this game, scoring 38.4% of their points behind arc, and that is how upsets happen.

Bill Murray?s son Luke is an assistant coach for Louisville; his team lost to the Gophers, a bitter pill for Carl Spackler (Caddyshack reference) to swallow. Bill Murray was at this game, too.

LSU 79, Yale 74? LSU jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead, was up 16 at the half, then held for dear life as the gritty Bulldogs fought hard until the end. Yale was only 8-37 on the arc, but four of the makes came near the end, as Yale covered thru the backdoor- they got within 77-74 in last 0:30.

Auburn 79, New Mexico State 78? Auburn got really lucky here; leading by 3 at the end, they fouled a 3-point shooter with 0:01.7 left, but the kid missed two of three FT?s, then the Aggies missed an open 3-pointer at the buzzer. Huge sigh of relief for the Tigers.

Tigers led this game 65-52 with 7:54 left; they made only six of their last 13 foul shots. Auburn didn?t handle time/score situations well at all- their point guard fouled on purpose when he didn?t know he had four fouls. No bueno.

Florida State 76, Vermont 69? Spunky effort by the Catamounts falls short; Florida State has won 15 of its last 17 games. If you laid 8.5 points with the Seminoles, it was a bad beat- kid on FSU had the ball by himself under the basket with 0:06 left but dribbled out the clock instead. Vermont made 16-32 on the arc; not many teams shoot that well from the arc and lose.

Last spring, Seminoles poached grad transfer David Nichols from Albany of America East; kid gets to the NCAA?s and plays against the Catamounts, America East?s best team. Now he and his teammates move on to play Murray State Saturday.

Michigan State 76, Bradley 65? Final score is misleading; three Spartans played 38:00+, thats how tough this was for Izzo?s team. Bradley led by a point with 6:47 left. Since 2012, MVC teams are 9-2-1 vs spread in first round games.

Maryland 79, Belmont 77? Its been seven years since an OVC team won a first round game, but since 2005, they?re 11-4 vs spread in this round. Belmont was up 40-34 at halftime, was up six with 6:36 left.

Kansas 87, Northeastern 53? Except for the championship game, each NCAA tournament win this year will be worth $1.81M to the conference of the school that wins it. The money gets divided up amongst the league?s schools, with team that wins the game getting more $$$ than the other schools.

Murray State 83, Marquette 64? Complete ass-kicking; Marquette didn?t even try to press in the second half, thats how thoroughly beaten they were. Golden Eagles wound up losing six of their last seven games, as Wojciechowski is proving to be a fraud of a coach who got this job because he sat next to Mike Krzyzewski for a few years.

WASHINGTON (AP) Jordan Greenway pumped his fist, and Luke Kunin held out his arms waiting for teammates to join him.

They celebrated like kids after performing like seasoned veterans.

With the Minnesota Wild outside a playoff position with little margin for error, the kid line of Kunin, Greenway and Ryan Donato pumped in two crucial goals to beat the defending Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals 2-1 on Friday night. Minnesota snapped a two-game skid and leapfrogged the Arizona Coyotes and Colorado Avalanche to move into the second wild-card spot in a competitive Western Conference race.

''When we have the focus that we did tonight, the confidence, the commitment, I think we can do a lot of good things, and we can beat anyone,'' Greenway said. ''Whether it's Washington or whoever, I think we can beat them.''

Minnesota fed off the confidence of the second line of 21- and 22-year-olds to hand the Capitals their second consecutive loss. Devan Dubnyk made 21 saves, but more impressive was the Wild holding Washington to 22 shots a game after it put up 58 on NHL-leading Tampa Bay.

''That was just a playoff game,'' Dubnyk said. ''The focus was there.''

Donato - acquired from Boston in February - was the best player on the ice for much of the night and assisted on the Greenway's goal in the first period and Kunin's go-ahead goal with 7:35 left in the third. Coach Bruce Boudreau believes having three young players on a line together gets rid of the expectation to pass to a veteran, and this mix is working lately.

''We're learning from each other,'' Donato said. ''I think we're starting to get each other's habits, where we're going to be on the ice, where the other guys are going to be, where they like to pass to. Being able to learn with each other, it makes you feel comfortable on the ice. You don't feel like you're doing anything wrong.''

It wasn't a masterpiece, but Minnesota needed two points in any way possible. Returning to face the team that gave him his start in the NHL, Boudreau knew full well that with only two games Friday night, the Wild were the only ones who could gain ground after getting some help from a Coyotes loss on Thursday.

Remembering his team's recent roller-coaster play, Boudreau said the victory only ''means temporarily we're in a playoff spot.''

The Capitals are in a good spot atop the Metropolitan Division, but have now lost four of six. They missed an opportunity to add to their division lead and still lead the New York Islanders and Pittsburgh Penguins by four points.

''We didn't play our game at all,'' captain Alex Ovechkin said. ''We knew they were going to play desperate - they need points as we do - but I think the sense of urgency was on their side, not on our side.''

Brett Connolly scored his 21st goal of the season and Braden Holtby made 25 saves for Washington, which didn't have the same intensity as its showdown against the Lightning two days earlier.

''After coming off some emotional games lately, I think we didn't ramp it up enough for this one, for their situation, how they were playing,'' Holtby said.

Despite losing seven of their previous nine games, the Wild remain in control of their playoff hopes with seven games remaining.

''It's never easy when it's out of your control, so for us having it in our control and getting a win like that, it's definitely a feel-good win,'' Donato said.

Cal-Irvine 70, Kansas State 64? Anteaters? first-ever NCAA tournament win; they?ve won 17 games in a row, have wins this year at Saint Mary?s, Texas A&M. Very good defensive team.

Disappointing loss for a veteran K-State team, which made the Elite 8 last year.

Iowa 79, Cincinnati 72? Bearcats led by 13 early on, but Iowa made 11-22 on arc, shot 58% inside arc and won a game where most of the crowd in Columbus was pulling for Cincinnati.

Last seven years, Bearcats are 183-59, 95-31 in conference games, but only 3-7 in NCAA tournament games. Three years ago, Mick Cronin pretended he was interested in the UNLV job so he could get financial concessions from the Cincinnati administration. I?m guessing there is a lot of grumbling going on today in Cincinnati.

Oklahoma 95, Ole Miss 72? Sooners made their first eight shots, led 12-0 quickly and jogged home from there. Oklahoma was just stronger, tougher than the Rebels,

Lon Kruger is the only coach to win an NCAA tournament for five different schools; UNLV, Kansas State, Illinois, Florida, Oklahoma. He also coached the Atlanta Hawks for three years.

Texas Tech 72, Northern Kentucky 57? Horizon League teams lost their last eight first round games; their last win was when Brad Stevens was coaching Butler and they made the national title game two years in a row.

Think about that accomplishment; a team from the Horizon League made the national title game two years in a row!!! No wonder the guy is coaching in the NBA now.

Tennessee 77, Colgate 70? Colgate has a kid named Jordan Burns who was told by his HS football coach that he would never play college basketball? he scored 32 points in this game, as Red Raiders gave Tennessee quite a scare.

One of Colgate?s best players, Rapolas Ivanauskas had pink-eye and didn?t play in the second half. Red Raiders made 15-29 on the arc in a strong performance.

Virginia 71, Gardner-Webb 56? Cavaliers were down 14 in first half of this game, as flashbacks from LY?s loss to UMBC were in everyone?s head.

Reality set in after halftime, when Gardner-Webb led by 6. Has to be a tremendous sigh of relief for Virginia- they play Oklahoma Sunday.

Gardner-Webb won games at Georgia Tech, Wake Forest; they were a pretty strong 16-seed.

Buffalo 91, Arizona State 74? Less than six years ago, Buffalo coach Nate Oats was teaching five math classes a day ? algebra, geometry and statistics ? at Romulus HS in Michigan. Now he is coaching a top 25 college team and making a boatload of money. He s very good at his job, but how long will he stay in Buffalo?

It's no surprise that the Lightning remain the most profitable team in the NHL even with some truly lopsided odds in their favor ? and they'll have a chance to build on their lofty resume Saturday as they visit the St. Louis Blues. Tampa Bay is listed at just -120 against the Blues ? and that makes it a tremendous profit option considering that the Lightning have won 38 of their past 53 games as favorites of between -110 and -150. But past history suggests that could be a trap, with the Blues having won seven of the past 10 meetings, including five of the previous six in St. Louis.

If you perused this space earlier in the week, you would know that the Chicago Blackhawks are primed to be a strong Under option the rest of the season as a major totals correction takes hold. And wouldn't you know it, the Blackhawks carry a three-game Under streak into Saturday's showdown with the host Colorado Avalanche. If the Capitals have any hope of repeating as Stanley Cup champions ? and oddsmakers have their doubts, pegging the Caps at +1,500 to win the title ? they'll need their No. 1 netminder to be a whole lot better. Holtby has had a rough season to date, posting a 2.95 goals-against average ? the highest of any qualified goalie with a winning record ? to go along with a .907 save percentage. But while Holtby's .901 save percentage in March is actually lower than his season mark, he has a 2.61 GAA and a 5-2-1 record for the month thanks in large part to Washington allowing just 27.2 shots per game ? fourth-best in the NHL.

The Avalanche and Blackhawks do battle in a home-and-home series this weekend ? and it's possible that Colorado will be without one of the league's most gifted forwards for either or both games. Mikko Rantanen left Thursday's 3-1 win over the Dallas Stars with an undisclosed injury and his status for this weekend's home-and-home set is up in the air. the Avalanche, who moved into the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference with the win over the Stars, can ill afford to be without the services of Rantanen, who has 31 goals and 56 assists on the season.
