Quote of the Day
“I always believed this moment would come. There was a little bit of me that was like, ‘You know what? You love playing baseball. Keep going no matter what.’ Crazy things happen in this game. So I’m very thankful that I’m here and that I get to enjoy this. I’m excited for the day.”
33-year old Drew Maggi, called up Sunday after 15 years in the minor leagues

Monday’s quiz
Last time the Detroit Lions won a playoff game, what Hall of Famer was the other team’s quarterback?

Sunday’s quiz
Seattle SuperSonics were an NBA team from 1967-2008, but then they moved to another city. Oklahoma City Thunder used to be the SuperSonics.

Saturday’s quiz
Milwaukee Brewers played for one year in Seattle, before moving to Wisconsin and becoming the Brewers in 1970- they were the Seattle Pilots in 1969.

************************************************** ***************

Monday’s Den: Wrapping up a sports weekend…….

— After 13 years as an infielder in the minor leagues, Pittsburgh Pirates called up 33-year old Drew Maggi to the majors Saturday, after he had played eight games for AA Altoona in the Eastern League; he’s played in 1,155 minor league games over 13 years for six organizations.

He played college ball at Arizona State; was a 15th round draft pick by the Pirates in 2010.

Not that this inspired me or anything, but as I type this, it is 3:30am and I’m watching the old movie The Rookie with Dennis Quaid, the true story of a high school science teacher in Texas who tried out for the Tampa Bay Rays and made it to the big leagues.

Good stuff.

Warriors 126, Kings 125
Home side has won all four series games; it is 2-2.
Warriors were +22 in Klay Thompson’s 39:00, minus-21 in his 9:00 off the floor.
Golden State outscored the Kings 37-23 in third quarter

Timberwolves 114, Nuggets 108, OT
Denver scored last 11 points of regulation to force overtime.
Nuggets still lead series, 3-1.
Anthony Edwards scored 34 points for Minnesota.

Knicks 102, Cavaliers 93
New York held Cleveland to 79-93 points in two wins this weekend.
Knicks lead series, 3-1.
Brunson scored 29 points, Barrett 26 for the Knicks.

Celtics 129, Hawks 121
Boston led this game 65-53 at halftime.
Al Horford played 34:00, was 0-2 from floor; Celtics were +17 in those 34:00.
Celtics lead series, 3-1.

— Road teams won all four NHL games Sunday, second day in a row that happened.

Pirates 2, Reds 0— Pittsburgh is 16-7; they’re in first place in NL Central, thanks to some really good starting pitching. Dodgers come calling this week; that’ll be interesting.

Rays 4, White Sox 1— Tampa Bay is 13-0 at home, freakin’ 13-0. They lead the AL East by 4.5 games; pretty good division. Red Sox are in last place, and they’re 12-11.

— Bruce Bochy should be inducted into the Hall of Fame this summer, that’s how great a manager he has been and still is. Texas Rangers haven’t been in the playoffs since 2016, but they’re 14-7 this year and lead the AL West by 2.5 games, in Bochy’s first season there.

Red Sox 12, Brewers 5— Masataka Yoshida hit two home runs Sunday……in the same inning. Red Sox trailed 4-3 after seven, then scored nine runs in the 8th to break the game open.

Dodgers 7, Cubs 3— Clayton Kershaw is 4-1, 2.32 in five starts this season, not bad for a 35-year old guy who was the center on his high school football team. That quarterback on that team was Matthew Stafford, who also makes his living in Los Angeles these days.

— I had forgotten that one of the actors in The Rookie is Jay Hernandez, who was also one of the players in Friday Night Lights, another terrific sports movie. Nowadays, he is the second coming of Thomas Magnum on Magnum PI.

— NFL Draft is this week, Thursday-Saturday from Kansas City. Hopefully the confusing quarterback scenarios around the league will be cleared up before then.

— If the baseball playoffs started today (they do not):
NL: Braves-Pirates-LA or Arizona. Wild Cards: Milwaukee-Mets-Cubs
AL: Rays-Twins-Rangers. Wild Cards: Orioles-Toronto-New York.

Tuesday’s 6-pack
Plays of 20+ yards last season:
83— Chiefs
80— Eagles
75— 49ers
72— Dolphins
71— Bills
70— Jaguars

Quote of the Day
“I love the competitive aspect of [the playoffs]. This is where all the best players, they show up and they show out. I’m not saying I’m one of those best players; I just want to be looked at as such.”
Jimmy Butler

Tuesday’s quiz
Before he was a pro wrestler and later an actor, Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson played college football. What school did he play for?

Monday’s quiz
Last time the Detroit Lions won a playoff game, Troy Aikman was the other team’s quarterback, way back in 1991.

Sunday’s quiz
Seattle SuperSonics were an NBA team from 1967-2008, but then they moved to another city. Oklahoma City Thunder used to be the SuperSonics.

************************************************** **********

Tuesday’s Den: Nobody asked me, but……..

— Aaron Rodgers got traded to the Jets Monday:

Jets get: Rodgers, the 15th pick in Thursday’s draft and a 5th round pick.

Green Bay gets:
the 13th pick in Thursday’s draft
a 2nd round pick in the draft (42nd pick)
a 6th round pick in the draft
A 1st round pick in the 2024 draft.

The 2024 pick becomes a 2nd round pick if Rodgers plays less than 65% of the Jets’ plays this season. If he plays 65%+ of the Jets’ plays, then it stays a 1st round pick.

Jets are going to be on primetime TV a lot this season.

— Jordan Love is the Packers’ QB now; his backup, if there was a game tomorrow, would be the world-famous Danny Etling, who is 28 years old but has never taken an NFL snap. He started at both Purdue/LSU, started for three years, but his last game at LSU was in 2017.

He hasn’t played a football game since 2017; Green Bay will likely add a QB or two before they begin training camp.

— Jets haven’t made the playoffs since 2010, the longest current drought in the league. That is about to end.

— Colorado Rockies’ TV guy Ryan Spilborghs was telling a story on himself Monday night; he played in the major leagues for seven years, hit .272 for his career. Pretty good ballplayer, but at the end of his career, he got traded from Cleveland to Texas, in a cash transaction.

Spilborghs was imagining how much $$$ the Rangers paid to acquire him in the deal; $50,000? $100,000? Years later, he found out the truth.

Turns out the guy who drafted him in Colorado 10 years earlier was working for Texas then, and he thought Spilborghs still had some game in him, but the Rangers weren’t willing to give up anything to get him.

They gave Cleveland $1 to make the trade. One freakin’ dollar. Had to be humbling to find that out.

— 15 or so years ago, there was a Little League team in the Dallas area that had both Trevor Story and Josh Bell on it. Imagine coaching that team? A freakin’ Little League team with two major leaguers on it. Must’ve been fun.

— Josiah Gray has started four games for the Washington Nationals this season; Washington scored a total of one run in losing all four games.

— The baseball they use in Japanese pro leagues is a quarter-ounce lighter than the ball they use in the major leagues. It is also slightly smaller, and it is stickier than the American baseball.

A’s 11, Angels 10 (10)
Oakland led 7-2 after five innings, but blew the lead.
A’s led 11-8 in 10th inning; they got Trout out with two men on to end the game.
Brent Rooker, Jesus Aguilar hit two homers each for Oakland; they hit back/back homers in two different innings.
Angels are now 0-7 in games where the winning run scores from the 7th inning on.

Braves 11, Marlins 0— Spencer Strider threw 7.1 no-hit innings; he struck out 13 of the 25 batters he faced.
Jean Segura got the first hit for Miami.
Strider’s grandmother turned 90 years old Monday; she was at the game, only the second time she’s seen him pitch in the big leagues.

Giants 4, Cardinals 0— Alex Cobb threw a complete game shutout, his first one since 2012; it has been 94 years since a guy tossed complete game shutouts that far apart.

Minnesota 6, New York 1— Bronx has a payroll of $272,559,898 this year; you would think their leadoff hitter would hit .200, hell, maybe even .250.

Brett Volpe batted leadoff the last six games; he is hitting .194. Analytics make people do some weird things.

Tampa Bay 8, Houston 3— Rays are 14-0 at home; they lead the AL East by 4.5 games.

Lakers 117, Memphis 111, OT
Lebron James scored 22 points, grabbed 20 rebounds, dished out 7 assists.
Grizzlies are now 2-15 ATS this season as a road underdog.
Lakers lead the series, 3-1

Heat 119, Bucks 114
Heat outscored Milwaukee 41-25 in 4th quarter.
Jimmy Butler scored 56 points for Miami.
Heat leads this series 3-1.

Seattle 3, Colorado 2 OT
Home team wins, the first time in three nights (1-11) the home team won a hockey game.
This series is tied 2-2.

Wednesday’s 6-pack

Fewest plays of 20+ yards last season:

43— Giants

46— Rams

49— Cardinals

50— Colts

51— Ravens

52— Saints, Steelers

Quote of the Day

“(Jalen) Carter is clearly a complicated prospect……..In mid-March, he pleaded no contest to misdemeanor charges of reckless driving and racing……..he was sentenced to 12 months of probation and 80 hours of community service………he also showed up at his pro day nine pounds heavier than he was at the NFL combine, and he couldn’t finish the position drills……On the field, he is a fantastic prospect.”

Mel Kiper Jr, draft expert

Wednesday’s quiz

Before he was a pro wrestler and later an actor, Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson played college football. He was a defensive lineman at Miami, FL.

Tuesday’s quiz

Before he was a pro wrestler and later an actor, Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson played college football. He was a defensive lineman at Miami, FL.

Monday’s quiz

Last time the Detroit Lions won a playoff game, Troy Aikman was the other team’s quarterback, way back in 1991. Lions beat Dallas 38-6 that day.

***************************************
Wednesday’s Den: Mid-week musings………

— NFL teams use a thing called the S2 cognitive test to help evaluate quarterbacks in the draft; there are nine parts to it, which are graded separately, kind of like the SAT test we took in high school.

The measurements used in each section include a quarterback’s ability to track multiple objects, make complex decisions, and filter through if/then scenarios with different defensive scenarios — with an ability to improvise.

Someone released the scores from this year’s QB’s; Alabama’s Bryce Young, Fresno State’s Jake Haener did the best. NFL teams are all worth $4B or so each; not sure I’d choose the most important player for my $4B franchise because of his score on a cognitive test.

I have no freakin’ idea if these tests can predict NFL success; I’m thinking studying game film might work better, but the draft is a fascinating process and later this week, we’ll learn a lot more about all that stuff.

— 242 players declared for this year’s NBA Draft, down from 283 players last year, 353 the year before that. There are 48 international players in this year’s draft.

Here’s the thing: the NBA Draft is only two rounds. This year’s draft will have only 58 players taken, so 184 kids are going to be disappointed.

College players who withdraw from the draft and want to be eligible in college next fall must withdraw by Wednesday, May 31.

— Suns 136, Clippers 130— Phoenix wins series 4-1, advances to play……..

— Nuggets 112, Timberwolves 109— Jokic had 28 points, 17 rounds, 12 assists. Denver wins their series, also by 4-1 margin.

— Hawks 119, Celtics 117— Trae Young scored 38 points, dished out 13 assists. Boston still leads the series, 3-2, but they led this game by 10 after the third quarter, couldn’t close the series out.

— NBA playoff series are too long; no team has ever been down 3-0 in a series and won it; only three times ever have been down 3-0 and forced a Game 7. Series should be best-of-5.

— Good news/bad news for the Pittsburgh Pirates Tuesday:
Good news— Pirates signed OF Bryan Reynolds to an 8-year, $106.75M contract, the biggest contract in Pirates’ history.

Bad news— Pirates led 7-3 after five innings, lost 8-7 at home to the Dodgers.

— Reds 7, Rangers 6— Texas led 6-1 in 8th inning, but Reds exploded for six runs in the bottom of the 8th; Jonathan India’s 2-run single was the game-winner.

— Giants 5, Cardinals 4— Blake Sabol hit a 2-run, walk-off homer in the bottom of the 9th; Giants scored three runs in the 9th, dropping St Louis to a disappointing 9-15 mark.

— Nationals 5, Mets 0— Mets played 17 of their first 23 games on the road; now they play 10 of their next 13 games at Citi Field.

— Astros 5, Rays 0— Tampa Bay finally loses a home game, after starting the season 14-0 at home. Luis Garcia tossed six shutout innings for Houston.

— Aaron Rodgers will wear number 8 with the Jets, the same number he wore in college with the Cal Bears. Jets retired #12 for Joe Namath a long time ago; Namath said Rodgers could wear number 12 if he wanted to, but Rodgers is smarter than that— don’t mess with a legend.

— Cincinnati Bengals picked up QB Joe Burrow’s 5th-year option; he’ll make at least $29.4M in 2024, unless they work out a much more lucrative deal before then.

— College quarterback happenings:
TCU lands experienced QB Chance Nolan from Oregon State; Nolan started 20 games for the Beavers, but left because Oregon State landed Clemson QB DJ Uiagalelei in the transfer portal.

Notre Dame QB Tyler Buchner entered the transfer portal; Notre Dame landed Wake Forest QB Sam Hartman in the portal, and these days, if a QB ain’t startin’, he’ll likely be departin’

Thursday’s 6-pack
Major league leaders in OPS:
1.138— Brandon Marsh, Phil
1.129— Max Muncy, LA
1.105— Matt Chapman, Tor
1.065— Jarred Kelenic, Sea
1.058— James Outman, LA
1.035— Luis Arraez, Miami

Quote of the Day
“I didn’t even know what to do when [the fans] started chanting my name. I wasn’t sure if I was supposed to take off my helmet. … I was trying to focus on the at-bat but also trying to really enjoy the moment, too. There was a lot going on in my mind. It was the coolest thing I could ever imagine. It was the coolest thing that’s ever happened to me.”
Drew Maggi, on his first major league at-bat, after 13 years in the minors

Thursday’s quiz
Of the 16 NFC teams, how many of their current starting quarterbacks have started a Super Bowl?

Wednesday’s quiz
In the movie Any Given Sunday, Al Pacino plays the coach of the Miami Sharks; Dennis Quaid and Jamie Foxx are two of his quarterbacks. Cameron Diaz plays the owner of the Sharks.

Tuesday’s quiz
Before he was a pro wrestler and later an actor, Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson played college football. He was a defensive lineman at Miami, FL.

*************************************************

Thursday’s Den: Doing some thinking out loud……..

— Heat 128, Bucks 126 OT
Milwaukee led by 16 after the third quarter.
Jimmy Butler scored 42 points for Miami.
Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 38 points, had 20 rebounds, but was 10-23 on foul line.
First time since 2012 a #8-seed beat a #1-seed in the playoffs.

— Warriors 123, Kings 116
Golden State wins third straight game, leads series 3-2.
Draymond Green scored 21 off the bench, was +13 in 32:00.
De’Aaron Fox was only 9-25 from the floor.

— Knicks 106, Cavaliers 95
Knicks win a playoff series for first time in ten years.
Donovan Mitchell’s teams are 2-13 ATS in their last 15 playoff games.

— Grizzlies 116, Lakers 99
Lakers’ subs were a combined minus-97
Desmond Bane scored 33 points, Ja Morant 31.
Memphis was +26 in the 18:00 Luke Kennard played.

— Houston Rockets hired Ime Udoka as their new head coach; Udoka went 65-41 in his one year coaching the Celtics, losing in the NBA Finals, but then he got suspended by Boston for off-court reasons.

Now he gets a second chance with a franchise that, over the last three years went 59-177 since they stupidly fired Mike D’Antoni.

— If you like the NBA, I highly recommend going to the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas; this year, it is July 7-17 at UNLV.

There are several games every day, in two arenas; it is fun to watch guys who were great college players fighting like hell just to get invited to NBA training camps. Excellent competition.

Plus, if you like meeting famous people, you’ll see your share at the summer league. Team owners, TV broadcasters, current NBA players, lot of them will be there. It is fun, it doesn’t cost so much and the arena has good air conditioning; July in Las Vegas is really, really hot.

— Nationals 4, Mets 1— Washington was 17-59 against their NL East rivals last year; they’re 3-2 so far this year, beating the Mets the last two days.

— Pirates 8, Dodgers 1— After 13 years, 1,154 games and 4,494 plate appearances in the minor leagues, 33-year old Drew Maggi played in his first major league game. Pretty awesome.

It is April 27th and the Pirates are in first place.

— Giants 7, Cardinals 3— St Louis lost seven of its last nine games, is already eight games out of first place. Cardinals are 0-8 in series openers; their 9-15 start is the Cardinals’ worst since 1973.

— Arizona 2, Royals 0— Zac Gallen tossed 6.1 scoreless innings, now has a 28-inning scoreless streak. Gallen had a 44.1-inning scoreless streak last year; he is really good, and the funny thing, he’s been traded twice, from St Louis to Miami, from Miami to Arizona.

Go figure.

— Reds 5, Rangers 3— Cincinnati sweeps the Rangers; Nick Senzel’s walk-off honer won the game. It was the Reds’ first home run in eight games.

— Astros 1, Rays 0— Tampa Bay started the season 20-3, now they’ve been shut out two games in a row. It is a long season; Rays lead the AL East by 3.5 games. Astros are only half a game behind Texas in the AL West.

— San Diego P Blake Snell has averaged 96.2 pitches/start in his five starts this season, but he still hasn’t gotten an out after the fifth inning. Starting pitchers need to finish six innings, to take the strain off their bullpen; five innings per start isn’t enough.

— NFL Draft starts tonight; for the next three days, we’ll look ahead to the fall and see which teams can improve themselves. The draft is a fascinating process; some teams are so much better at it than others. It’ll be fascinating to see how it plays out.
