Updated odds to win the Stanley Cup:
5-2— Boston Bruins
5-1— Vegas Golden Knights, Edmonton Oilers
6-1— Colorado Avalanche
10-1— Carolina Hurricanes, Dallas Stars, New York Rangers
12-1— LA Kings, New Jersey Devils, New York Rangers
18-1— Minnesota Wild, Tampa Bay Lightning

Quote of the Day
“Kind of relief. It really seemed like a load was lifted because everybody was on pins and needles for the last couple of months. You kind of wondered what was going to happen.”
Commanders’ coach Ron Rivera, talking about the team being sold this week

Saturday’s quiz
Peyton Manning was the #1 pick of the 1998 NFL Draft; which Pac-12 quarterback was the #2 pick in that draft, selected by the Chargers?

Friday’s quiz
Hakeem Olajuwon was the #1 pick in the 1984 NBA Draft; Michael Jordan was the #3 pick. Sam Bowie was the #2 pick; he played 511 games over 10 injury-plagued seasons.

Thursday’s quiz
In the movie Blue Chips, Hall of Famer Bob Cousy plays the athletic director at fictional Western U, where Nick Nolte’s character is the coach.

Saturday’s Den: XFL trends, and wrapping up a busy Friday

— Heat 102, Bulls 91— Heat outscored Chicago 35-23 in last quarter; they advance to play the Bucks in the first round of the playoffs. Max Strus scored 31 points, making 7-12 on the arc.

— Timberwolves 120, Thunder 95— Minnesota outscored OKC 58-30 in the paint; they face #1-seed Denver in a best-of-seven series starting Sunday night. Rudy Gobert returned from his one-game suspension, had 21 points, 10 rebounds.

— Blue Jays 6, Rays 3— Tampa Bay won’t go unbeaten this year; they also lost P Jeffrey Springs (elbow) for at least two months. Not the best day for the Rays, but they’re still 13-1.

— Brewers 11, Padres 2— San Diego has a huge payroll; right now they’re 7-8 and look lethargic. Maybe I’m bitter because I traded for Juan Soto in my fantasy league and he looks awful, hitting .189 thru 15 games.

— Boston Red Sox are only team in the major leagues that haven’t had a starting pitcher throw a pitch in the sixth inning so far this season. Short starts puts a strain on a team’s bullpen. Red Sox are 6-8, in last place in the AL East.

— Guardians 4, Nationals 3— Cleveland is 6-2 on road, 2-4 at home. 8 of their 14 games (5-3) were decided by one run.

— Marlins 5, Arizona 1— Small sample size obviously, but Miami is 7-7, an improvement. They won four of their last five games.

— Braves 10, Royals 3— Atlanta scored seven runs in first two innings, hitting three homers. Austin Riley hit his 100th career home run.

— Cubs 8, Dodgers 2— Justin Steele is 2-0, 1.42 in his first three starts; Cubs led this game 3-2 after seven innings, then broke game open late. Dodgers are 7-7, have lost five of their last seven games.

— Orioles 6, White Sox 3— Chicago led 3-0 after six innings, then their bullpen imploded; Adley Rutschman knocked in three runs, also walked three times. Orioles are 8-6; are they good enough to contend for a Wild Card spot?

— NBA fined the Dallas Mavericks $750,000 for “conduct detrimental to the league” in an elimination game against the Chicago Bulls on April 7- they sat a lot of their best players, so they would lose and miss the playoffs, while keeping a draft pick they would’ve lost had they made it to the playoffs.

— Top five seeds in the NBA’s Western Conference playoffs have won a combined one NBA title, and that was when the Rochester Royals (now the Sacramento Kings) won a championship, way back in 1951.

— Teams that have won the NBA play-in games to advance into the playoffs are 0-9 in those playoff series.

— 2B Edouard Julien of the Minnesota Twins is the first MLB player in the modern era to have his first two career hits come in the 1st inning of the same game- he did that Thursday, when the Twins scored nine runs in the first inning in the Bronx.

Jhony Brito started that game for New York. His season so far:
First two starts: 10 IP, 8 baserunners, 1 run allowed, 2 wins.
Third start: 0.2 IP, 7 baserunners, 7 runs allowed, one loss.

— San Francisco Giants/P Logan Webb agreed to a 5-year, $90M contract extension.

— Red Sox have now lost 13 games in a row at Tampa Bay.

— Rory McIlroy skipped the RBC Heritage tournament this week; because of that, the PGA Tour will reportedly dock McIlroy $3M of the $12M he earned from his finish in the Player Impact Program last year.

This year, the 23 golfers who cashed in from the PIP are required to play all but one designated event in 2023 to receive their winnings. McIlroy missed the Tournament of Champions in January, so he was docked 25% of his winnings from the PIP, when he missed his second event of the season.

— TJ Bamba transferred from Washington State to Villanova; Bamba averaged 15.8 ppg for the Coogs last year. There are over 1,400 names in the college basketball transfer portal.

Baker Dunleavy quit as basketball coach at Quinnipiac, to become the general manager of Villanova’s basketball program. I’m thinking that he is overseeing the transfer portal, which is how Bamba winds up bolting from Wazzu to the Wildcats.

— This is Zion Williamson’s 4th year in the NBA; he’s played in 37% of the Pelicans’ games, for which he’s been paid $44,261,137. The last two years, he played in 29 of a possible 164 games.

Good work, if you can get it.

— Washington Commanders were sold for $6B this week; that’s Billion, with a B; last NFL team that was sold was the Denver Broncos last year- they sold for $4.65B. Carolina Panthers were sold for $2.28B in 2018.

Guy that bought the Commanders also owns the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers, NHL’s New Jersey Devils. Oh, and the guy who owns the Cleveland Browns just bought the Milwaukee Bucks.

Must be nice to be rich.

— Three teams that have never had the #1 pick in the NFL Draft:
Ravens, Broncos, Seahawks

— They had 26 inches of rain in one day in Fort Lauderdale this week, an enormous amount of rain, event for south Florida. Two feet of rain!!!

“It was an unprecedented event.” said one Florida meteorologist. Scary stuff.

— Here are trends for all eight XFL teams, eight weeks into their 10-game regular season.

Arlington Renegades (4-4)
Their four wins were all by 1 or 2 points.
Losses were all by 6+ points.
Six of their last seven games stayed under the total.

Las Vegas Vipers (2-6)

Orlando Guardians (1-7)

Their only win was against 7-1 Defenders.
Six of their eight games went over total.
Guardians covered three of last four games.

St Louis Battlehawks (6-2)
Both their losses are to 7-1 Defenders (34-28/28-20)
St Louis allowed 18 or less points in its wins.
Battlehawks are 3-0 in games decided by 4 or less points.
St Louis is 3-2 ATS as an underdog.
Four of their last five games stayed under the total.

San Antonio Brahmas (2-6)

Seven of their eight games stayed under the total.
Average total in their last four games: 27.0.
Brahmas are 0-5 if they allow more than 12 points.

Seattle won five of its last six games, after an 0-2 start.
Sea Dragons covered four of their last six games.
Six of their eight games went over the total.
Their four road games all went over the total.
Seattle’s losses were by 1-2-4 points.

USFL starts this weekend; we’ll get into that league once the XFL is over.

Sunday’s Den: Wrapping up a sports Saturday……..

— Former big league pitcher Ryan Dempster is running in his first Boston Marathon Monday morning; so is Justin Turner’s wife. I admire their stamina to run 26 miles, all at once.

Me? I get tired driving 26 miles, I start looking for a Wendy’s or a Dunkin’ Donuts. While I admire someone who runs that far, part of me says it just ain’t that healthy a thing to do.

First person that ever ran a marathon, as in ever, was a guy named Pheidippides who dropped dead after he ran 26 miles to deliver a message about the Athenians defeating the Persians in a military battle. This result was a big upset, but Pheidippides should have sent a text, or posted the result on Twitter, or whatever they did in 490 BC, when this supposedly happened.

2,513 years later, people still run marathons, and I’m not sure why. Sitting on the couch is a lot more fun.

— Kings 126, Warriors 123— Sacramento’s first playoff game in 18 years was a big success; De’Aaron Fox scored 38 points, the four Kings’ subs were a combined +31.

Golden State shot 27-40 inside the arc (67.5%), 16-50 on the arc. Steph Curry scored 30 points; Warriors were minus-14 in the 11:00 he was off the floor.

— Knicks 101, Cavaliers 97— First time the Knicks won Game 1 of a series on the road since 1999 against Indiana. Four New York subs were a combined +44; Josh Hart scored 17 points, grabbed 10 rebounds.

— Celtics 112, Hawks 99— Boston led 74-44 at halftime, coasted home from there; Hawks were 5-29 on the arc. Hopefully Game 2 will be more entertaining.

Atlanta’s Trae Young is now 8 for his last 49 on the arc in playoff games. No bueno.

— 76ers 121, Nets 101— Philly was 21-43 on the arc, most 3’s they’ve ever made in a playoff game. Harden scored 23 points, dished out 13 assists.

— Utah Jazz/All-Star forward Lauri Markkanen is going to fulfill his mandatory service in the Finnish military this offseason; military service is mandatory for male citizens of Finland and must be finished by age 30. Markkanen is 25.

— Virginia/Memphis scheduled a home/home college basketball series for the next two years, an interesting contrast in styles.

— Fernando Tatis Jr will be back with the San Diego Padres Thursday, when his 20-game suspension ends. He is expected to bat leadoff for the Friars.

— Los Angeles Angels called up SS prospect Zach Neto from the AA Southern League, even though he’s only played in 37 games at the AA level. He was the Angels’ first round pick in last summer’s draft. Nets went 0-4 in his big league debut Saturday, at Fenway Park.

Tigers 7, Giants 6 (11)— San Francisco led 6-1 after four innings; Miguel Cabrera’s walk-off, pinch-hit single was his 16th walk-off hit, his 3,095th career hit.

— White Sox 7, Orioles 6 (10)— Grandal tied game with a 10th inning double, Colas walked it off with a single.

It turns out that Orioles’ catcher Adley Rutschman was briefly a left-footed kicker in college at Oregon State; there is film of him tackling Christian McCaffrey during an OSU-Stanford game.

— Pirates 6, Cardinals 3 (10)— Pittsburgh is off to a surprising 9-6 start; Rodolfo Castro was 3-5, knocked in two runs in this game. Cardinals have stumbled out of the gate with a 6-9 record.

— Dodgers 2, Cubs 1— Chicago led 1-0 in ninth inning; David Peralta’s 2-run single sent the Dodger fans home happy.

— In an act of extreme arrogance, the Mets won’t start Max Scherzer in Oakland today; he’s going to start against the Dodgers Wednesday instead. The party line was that Scherzer has some injury that will miraculously heal by Wednesday.

Instead, some minor leaguer who gave up 7 runs in four innings in his only major league start last year will start for the Mets against the 3-12 A’s, who are a terrible team, a team that should still lose, even to a minor league pitcher.

4) Colts
5) Seahawks (from Denver)
6) Lions (from LA Rams)

“We didn’t execute the priorities of the game plan. Get back. Execute half-court defense and get rebounds.”
Memphis Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins, after Sunday’s 128-112 loss

Monday’s quiz

Sunday’s quiz

Monday’s Den: Wrapping up a sports weekend……..

Clippers 115, Suns 110— Kawhi Leonard scored 38 points; Russell Westbrook added 8 assists, 11 rebounds (he was 3-19 shooting), but the story of the game was the Clipper bench. LA’s four subs that played were a combined +53. Suns’ subs were a combined minus-54,

Heat 130, Bucks 117— Jimmy Butler scored 35 points, had 11 assists. Giannis Antetokounmpo hurt his back, played only 11:00; Bucks made only 11 of 45 3-point shots. Miami made 15-25 3-point shots. Heat G Tyler Herro broke his right (shooting) hand.

Lakers 128, Grizzlies 112— Memphis was 35-6 at home this year, but LA outscored Grizzlies 69-47 in second half. Ja Morant aggravated a right hand injury; his status for Game 2 in unclear. Rui Hachimura scored 29 points for the Lakers.

Nuggets 109, Minnesota 80— Denver was only home team to win Sunday; they outscored Minnesota 32-14 in third quarter. Timberwolves looked little tired after their play-in games during the week.

— Oakland A’s are 3-13 this year, their owner is a cheap bastard who turned a $29M profit last year, even though he fielded a minor league team against a major league schedule, but for a little while Sunday, none of that mattered.

A’s honored their 1973 World Championship team Sunday, too bad only 17,645 fans showed up. Reggie Jackson was even there; he has very rarely showed up in Oakland for any events to honor the past. Wore his number 9 jersey too, spoke to the crowd. It was excellent.

A’s players/coaches are trying really hard, competing, they’re simply not good enough.

— Trevor Bauer made his debut in Japanese baseball over the weekend; he pitched for the Yokohama BayStars’ minor league team, giving up four hits and no runs while striking out six in four innings before 2,600 fans. Bauer hasn’t pitched competitively since 2021; he is expected to get one more minor league start, before he makes his debut with the BayStars.

— Doug Pederson coaches the Jacksonville Jaguars; he obviously won a Super Bowl with the Eagles. Pederson was in Memphis for a USFL game Sunday; his son Josh is a tight end with the Houston Gamblers. He caught two passes for 23 yards in Houston’s first game, a 29-13 loss.

Seattle 1, Colorado 0— Jarred Kelenic drove in the only run and made a great catch in the 8th inning that prevented the tying run from scoring.

More good news for Seattle: Luis Castillo threw 7 shutout innings.
Bad news for Seattle: Mariners’ DH’s are 5 for 56 so far this season.

Arizona 5, Miami 0— Zac Gallen allowed only two hits in 6.2 IP against the team that traded him, outdueling Sandy Alcantara.

July 31, 2019, Marlins traded Gallen to Arizona for Jazz Chisholm, an interesting trade. Since then, Gallen has gone 23-20, 3.13 in 78 starts for the Diamondbacks. I’m thinking Arizona got the best of this deal; pitching is kind of important in baseball.

Phillies 14, Reds 3— Philadelphia scored nine runs in the top of the first; they had five players with 3+ hits in this game.

Brewers 1, Padres 0— San Diego just seems lethargic; getting blanked by Wade Miley isn’t a good thing. Fernando Tatis Jr is expected to bat leadoff when he returns from his suspension Thursday; we’ll see if that helps any.

Rangers 9, Astros 1— If you bet under 8 in this game, skip ahead to the next item; this game was scoreless after six innings, yet still got over the total. This is the latest the Rangers have been in first place since the last time they made the playoffs, in 2016.

— I misspoke here couple of weeks ago, when we were talking about Florida Atlantic moving up to the AAC next year. I said FAU-Houston basketball matchups would be interesting in the AAC, but the Cougars have bolted to the Big 12, meaning that FAU will be one of the best hoop teams in the AAC next fall, if not the best team.

— West Virginia had a rough couple years in basketball, going 11-25 in conference games the last two years, but Bob Huggins ain’t messing around this spring. He’s already added a point guard from Arizona (Kerr Kriisa), two of Manhattan’s best players and a big guy (Jesse Edwards) who averaged a double/double for Syracuse this past season.

MLB teams’ records in series, so far this season:

Arizona 2-1-2
Atlanta 4-1
Cubs 3-1-1
Cincinnati 1-2-2
Colorado 0-3-2
Dodgers 2-2-1
Miami 3-2
Milwaukee 4-1
Mets 4-1
Philadelphia 1-3-1
Pittsburgh 2-2-1
St Louis 2-2-1
San Diego 1-2-2
San Francisco 2-3
Washington 0-4-1

Baltimore 3-2
Boston 3-2
White Sox 0-4-1
Cleveland 3-2
Detroit 2-3
Houston 1-3-1
Kansas City 1-4
Angels 3-2
Minnesota 3-1-1
New York 4-0-1
Oakland 0-5
Seattle 2-3
Tampa Bay 4-1
Texas 3-2
Toronto 4-1

If the baseball playoffs started today (they do not):
NL: Braves, Brewers, Arizona. Wild Cards: Mets-Cubs-Pirates
AL: Rays, Twins, Rangers. Wild Cards: Guardians-Blue Jays-New York

************************************************** ***

Tuesday’s Den: Nobody asked me, but……..

— I’m sitting here at 1:45am watching NHL playoff games that are live on TV— Kings just won on a power play goal in Edmonton, Dallas-Minnesota is in a second overtime. You don’t see many penalties called in overtime, but both of these games had one.

When I was in grade school/high school, long time ago, I was a huge hockey fan, used to listen to a ton of games on this portable radio my parents had that could get stations as far away as St Louis or Chicago. I was a big Boston Bruins fan, listened to all their games, with Fred Cusick, Johnny Pierson and later on, Bob Wilson on the call.

Great thrill for me was meeting Bobby Orr at a minor league baseball game after he retired; he was playing in a charity softball game. Very nice man; still have the picture from that night here in my living room.

When I got to college, I got involved in college basketball, and ESPN started up, which really made college basketball the huge thing it has become, and hockey kind of drifted off into the background for me, but I do remember how freakin’ exciting overtime games are once you get into the playoffs.

Was fun watching these games; Minnesota just scored to win their game. Weird that they’re playing Dallas; the Dallas Stars used to be the Minnesota North Stars and when they bolted to Dallas, that’s how the Minnesota Wild came to be, way back in 2000.

NHL playoffs are way better than the NBA’s version; just a lot more dramatic, more upsets.

— NBA teams keep 75% of their playoff ticket revenue, a higher share than NHL (65%), MLB (55%), and NFL (0%) teams.

According to Lev Akabas, Golden State’s run of 12 home playoff games last year grossed their franchise roughly $100M, so they kept $75M of that, give or take.

— Speaking of Golden State, before this series with Sacramento, the last time the Warriors started a playoff series on the road was in 2014, against the Clippers.

— Sacramento 114, Golden State 106— Last time the Warriors were down 2-0 in a series was 2007, when Steph Curry was still at Davidson. Sacramento scored 17 points in the 1st quarter, 41 points in the 2nd quarter. Kings’ subs were a combined +15 in this game.

— Quiz of the Day, part 2: Which three NBA players have won the most playoff games together?
(Answer below)

— Philadelphia Eagles’ QB Jalen Hurts signed a 5-year, $255M contract Monday, with $179.3M of that money guaranteed. Eagles are 25-13 with Hurts as their QB, 2-2 in playoff games.

— According to football expert Warren Sharp, these NFL teams have the easiest schedules for the coming season (before we see who plays who on which dates)
32) Saints
31) Falcons
30) Panthers
29) Colts
28) Bears

NFL teams have the hardest schedules for the coming season
1) New England
2) Buffalo
3) Kansas City
4) Las Vegas
5) Miami

— The last three seasons, only two NFL teams started the same quarterback for all their games: Buffalo (Josh Allen), Tampa Bay (Tom Brady).

— Utah State G Steven Ashworth transfered to Creighton Monday, a big get for the Bluejays. Ashworth scored 16.2 ppg this past year, dished out 4.5 assists/game, shooting 43.4% from 3-point range.

— Answer to Quiz of the Day, part 2:
Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker won 126 playoff games with the Spurs.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, Michael Cooper won 110 with the Lakers.

— Only NBA players to score 30+ ppg, shoot 50% from floor, 90%+ from foul line in a season:
2015-16— Steph Curry 30.1 ppg, 50.4% from floor, 90.8% on line

2022-23— Shai Gilgeous-Alexander 31.4 ppg, 51% from floor, 90.5% from line

— Arkansas has added five transfers already this spring; those five players averaged a combined 64.8 ppg this past season.

— Jaren Jackson Jr of the Memphis Grizzlies is the NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year.

— Arizona 6, St Louis 3— Diamondbacks (10-7) are only NL West team over .500; they lead the Dodgers by two games, San Diego by 2.5 games.

— Pirates 14, Rockies 3— Games like this get managers fired; it is only April, so Colorado won’t be firing Bud Black anytime soon, but the Rockies looked like a high school team in this game, and a bad high school team. Pirates ran the bases at will, made Colorado look terrible.

— Angels 5, Red Sox 4— Rainy Patriots’ Day in Boston; both starting pitchers came out after a third inning rain delay. One thing about the new, balanced schedule; when the last game of a non-divisional series gets rained out, making it up will be a logistical nightmare, since teams only visit the same city once a year.

— Rangers 4, Royals 0—Jacob deGrom threw four no-hit innings, then left with a wrist injury after throwing 58 pitches. Texas is 10-6 and leads the AL West, but they’ll need deGrom to be healthy for them to get to the playoffs.

— Astros 9, Blue Jays 1— Houston scored seven runs in the bottom of the first inning, coasted from there.

— Reds 8, Rays 1— Tampa Bay lost three of last four games, after a 13-0 start; this was the Rays’ 17th game, only their fourth game outdoors, the first one since April 5.

Wednesday’s 6-pack
QB’s who have started for the Washington Commanders from 2020-22:
24 games— Taylor Heinicke
7— Carson Wentz
6— Dwayne Haskins, Alex Smith
4— Kyle Allen
1— Ryan Fitzpatrick
1— Garrett Gilbert
1— Sam Howell

Quote of the Day
“That’s the All-Star we know, and it was good to see. He came out with a purpose. There was just a different look in his eye.”
Donovan Mitchell, talking about Cavaliers’ teammate Darius Garland

Wednesday’s quiz
Who was the Pittsburgh Pirates’ manager, the last time they made the playoffs?

Tuesday’s quiz
Since 2020, Washington Commanders started eight quarterbacks, the most of any team.

Monday’s quiz
Stan Kroenke owns the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams; he also owns the NBA’s Denver Nuggets and the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche.

************************************************** **********

Wednesday’s Den: Mid-week musings……..

— Winnipeg 5, Vegas 1— Winnipeg Jets F Morgan Barron took a skate to his face in this game, requiring more than 75 stitches, but he returned to the ice less than a period later.

Hockey players are very tough people; the guy got 75 stitches, and was back on the ice playing about an hour later.

— Four NHL playoff series started Tuesday; the road team won all four.

— Cavaliers 107, Knicks 90 (series 1-1)
Cleveland outscored Knicks 34-17 in second quarter.
LeVert scored 24 points in 40:00, was +23; he didn’t start.

— Suns 123, Clippers 109 (series 1-1)
Game was tied at half; Phoenix outscored Clippers 64-50 in 2nd half.
Booker scored 38 points, dished out nine assists.

— Celtics 119, Hawks 106 (Boston leads 2-0)
Celtics shot 55% inside the arc.
Boston led 61-49 at halftime.
Atlanta’s four subs were a combined minus-54 in 77:00

— Dodgers 5, Mets 0
Clayton Kershaw gets his 200th major league win.
In his career, Kershaw is 11-0, 2.03 in 17 starts against the Mets.

— Tigers 4-1, Guardians 3-0— Detroit sweeps a doubleheader, allowing three runs; Carpenter hit a walk-off homer in the opener, Detroit’s third straight walk-off win. Last time the Tigers had three consecutive walk-off wins was 2004.

— Braves 8, Padres 1— San Diego has sold out 9 of its 12 home games, but the Padres stink right now- they’ve scored 3 or fewer runs in six of their last seven games, had a 25-inning scoreless streak that ended in this game.

Fernando Tatis returns from his suspension Thursday; they’re asking an awful lot of him to think his presence will revive an offense that is floundering badly.

— Brewers 6, Mariners 5 (11)— Seattle is 8-10 this year, 2-5 in one-run games; the last couple of years, Mariners were 67-41 in one-run games. Milwaukee is 13-5, two games ahead of the Cubs, Pirates, who are both off to surprisingly good starts.

— Rangers 12, Royals 2— Bruce Bochy won three World Series with the Giants; in his first month managing Texas, his team is 11-6 and leads the AL West by two games.

— White Sox 4-3, Phillies 7-0— Lucas Giolito threw six no-hit innings in the nightcap; he threw 102 pitches in those six innings.

— Hayden Wesneski has started three games for the Cubs, who won all three games, mostly because they scored 36 runs in those games.

— Golden State’s Draymond Green is suspended for Game 3 of the Warriors-Kings series; NBA said the suspension was “based in part on Green’s history of unsportsmanlike acts.” Green stepped on the chest of the Kings’ Domantas Sabonis during Monday’s Game 2 in Sacramento.

— Rams traded WR Allen Robinson to Pittsburgh; teams also flip 7th round draft picks, and the Rams get some salary cap relief, which they really need.

— Chiefs are signing QB Blaine Gabbert to back up Patrick Mahomes; the 33-year old Gabbert has started 48 games in his 11-year career, but his last start was in 2018.
