Thursday’s 6-pack

Last six teams to win the NBA Championship:

2022— Golden State

2021— Milwaukee

2020— LA Lakers

2019— Toronto

2018— Golden State

2017— Golden State

Quote of the Day

“A reform that has been of interest to ownership for a number of years is a limitation of contract length……those (long) contracts result in a transfer from the current stars to yesterday’s stars. At some point, that has to be true. And I think it is an issue that is important for us to stay focused on, because it creates inflexibility that affects the quality of the teams that you put on the field.”

MLB commissioner Rob Manfred

Thursday’s quiz

When was the last time the Angels made the playoffs?

Wednesday’s quiz

Clint Hurdle was the Pittsburgh Pirates’ manager in 2015, last time they made the playoffs.

Tuesday’s quiz

Since 2020, Washington Commanders started eight quarterbacks, the most of any team.

************************************
Thursday’s Den: XFL trends, and other relevant Thursday things…….

— Mets 5, Dodgers 3
Max Scherzer was tossed in the 4th inning; a sticky substance dispute.
Brandon Nimmo went 5-for-5, hit a home run for the Mets.
Dodgers are 9-10 and look very ordinary.

— Pirates 14, Rockies 3— Pittsburgh outscored Colorado 33-9 in their three-game sweep; Pirates are 12-7, would be in the playoffs if they started today.

— Padres 1, Braves 0— San Diego has scored total of two runs in their last four games; Martinez tossed seven shutout IP, Soto homered for the only run.

— Bronx 3, Angels 2 (10)— Judge homered, also made two great catches that both saved a run; two teams were a combined 1-24 with runners in scoring position.

— Brewers 5, Mariners 3— Milwaukee is 6-0 in games where the winning run scored from the 7th inning on.

— Orioles 4, Nationals 0— Baltimore is 11-7; just like the Pirates, if the season ended now, they would make the playoffs.

— Cincinnati Reds signed P Hunter Greene to a six-year, $53M contract extension. Greene has started 28 games for the Reds; he is 5-13, with a 4.42 ERA.

— Josiah Gray pitches for Washington; in his last three starts, the Nationals lost 1-0/2-0/1-0. Not a lot of support there.

— It can’t be a lot of fun being a mid-major college basketball coach; Kansas Jayhawks just poached a player from Towson State. Nick Timberlake scored 17.7 ppg in 35.7 minutes/game this past year, shooting 41.6% on the arc. Shooting is marketable.

When a player plays 35.7 minutes/game, it means he is indispensable; Towson was 21-12 this past season, 12-6 in the CAA, a good team- they’re 46-21 the last two years, but now they’re going to regress, because their best guy just jumped ship to play in the big time.

— Chris Ledlum scored 18.8 ppg, grabbed 8.4 rebounds/game for Harvard last year; he goes to Tennessee as a grad student, choosing the Vols over Indiana.

— Home teams won all three NBA games Wednesday; Heat-Bucks, Lakers-Grizzlies series are both 1-1. Nuggets beat Minnesota 122-113, lead that series 2-0.

— Since 1997, LA Lakers have won 30 consecutive playoff series when they won Game 1, the NBA’s longest-such streak; the next three longest streaks:

Bulls 24 (1990-98)
Celtics 24 (1957-73)
Rockets 17 (1975-97)

— NFL Draft starts a week from tonight; there are five teams that don’t have a first round pick this year. One of the teams, the LA Rams, haven’t had a first round pick since they took Jared Goff in 2016. Rams do have their first round pick next year.

— There is an Arena Football team here in Albany, the Albany Empire, which plays in the National Arena League, which has seven teams, two of them in Texas; former NFL WR Antonio Brown recently became the majority owner— he owns 95% of the team.

Since Brown took over the team, he fired the head coach (who won the championship the last two years), and then the director of media relations and team president also left the team. It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out.

Long time ago, Brown’s father Eddie Brown was a great WR for the Albany Firebirds in the Arena Football League; Firebirds won the Arena Bowl in 1999. Eddie Brown once scored seven TD’s in a game— right now, he is the Empire’s vice president of operations.

Quote of the Day

“You could see what the game plan was. Got to hit him, try to make me frustrated so I could get ejected. So, I’m too mature to put myself in a position where I’m going to be ejected, so I just went about my business and we got the win.”

Joel Embiid

Friday’s quiz

Which current NBA team used to call Cincinnati home? They were the Cincinnati Royals back then.

Thursday’s quiz

2014 was the last time the Angels made the playoffs.

Wednesday’s quiz

Clint Hurdle was the Pittsburgh Pirates’ manager in 2015, last time they made the playoffs.

*************************************************
Friday’s Den: Random stuff with the weekend here…….

— It figures that Thursday was the best day the Oakland A’s have had in two years; they didn’t play a game.

Season is 22 days old; A’s don’t have a win from a starting pitcher yet- they’re 3-16 and are a terrible team. They were in the playoffs as recently as 2020, but they’ve dumped all their good players because God forbid they pay anyone a lot of money.

Reliever Trevor May is making $7M this year, the A’s highest-paid player; he just left the team to deal with anxiety issues. Their entire payroll appears to be $59,305,000, less than Trout/Ohtani’s combined salaries.

The Mets have 12 guys who are all making $10M+ each this season.

The good news came from off the field; the A’s announced very late Wednesday night that they’ve bought 49 acres of land in Las Vegas, and will build a a retractable roof dome west of the strip, across the I-15 highway from T-Mobile Arena, where the NHL’s Golden Knights play.

The new stadium is expected to be ready in 2027; no word on where the A’s will play for the next three years. Their AAA team plays in a nice but small 6,000-seat stadium in Summerlin, a Las Vegas suburb, that is an option. They could play “home” games in San Francisco or stay in Oakland for a while, but those would be two very awkward options.

At least there is some closure to this situation now; once the Tampa Bay stadium is settled, then MLB can get around to its next big thing, adding two expansion teams, to get to 32 big league teams, with expansion fees helping teams recoup some of the money they lost out on in 2020.

— Great news from White Sox reliever Liam Hendriks, who reported Thursday that he is cancer free and in remission. Hendriks said in January that he had non-Hodgkins’ lymphoma, so it is excellent to hear that he is on the road to recovery.

— Pirates 4, Reds 3— Pittsburgh is much improved at 13-7; their starting pitcher has lasted 6+ innings in their last ten games, with Pirates going 7-3 in those games. In this day and age, if your starting pitcher is getting you 18 outs, that takes lot of strain off your bullpen.

— Rockies 5, Phillies 0— Colorado ends its 8-game losing skid; the home plate umpire was Brian Knight, who acted like he bet the under in this game. Every marginal pitch in this game, for both sides, was called a strike. He called Jurickson Profar out on a 3-2 pitch because of a pitch clock violation; it was marginal at best. Am looking forward to seeing his pitch chart tomorrow.

Observation; the new rules are fine and all, but NO ONE wants to see a guy called out on a 3-2 pitch in the 8th inning on a marginal pitch clock violation. People pay to watch baseball, not to watch an umpire strangle the game.

— There was a report on ESPN Thursday that Shohei Ohtani will explore free agency if the Angels miss the playoffs this year, which complicates things for the Angels.

They cannot let Ohtani walk and get nothing in return; that would be malpractice, but they also won’t get value for him if they deal him, since there is no guarantee that Ohtani would sign with the team he gets traded to, unless they negotiate a sign-and-trade before the deal happens.

Right now, the Angels are 9-10; they’re 0-5 in games where winning run scored from 7th inning on. At what point do the Halos throw in the towel and start talking trades?

— Interleague play so far this season: National League leads, 36-34.

— Arizona Diamondbacks DFA’d P Madison Bumgarner, even though they still owe him $34M in future salary; Bumgarner is 0-3, 10.26 in four starts this season, was 7-15, 4.88 in 30 starts last year.

— Minnesota Twins won all four of Joe Ryan’s starts this year, scoring 37 runs.

— MLB suspended Mets P Max Scherzer for 10 games, after he was ejected Wednesday for a sticky stuff violation.

— Dodgers 6, Cubs 2— James Outman hit a 9th inning grand slam that was the game-winning hit; Dodgers even their record at 10-10.

— 76ers 102, Nets 97 (Philly leads, 3-0)
Sixers outscored Brooklyn 26-15 in 4th quarter.
Tyrese Maxey hit a 3-pointer with 0:44 left for the game-winning hoop
Brooklyn has lost its last nine playoff games.

— Warriors 114, Kings 97 (Sacramento leads, 2-1)
Steph Curry scored 36 points, was +24.
Kevon Looney grabbed 20 rebounds, dished out 9 assists.
De’Aaron Fox scored 26 points, had 9 rebounds and 9 assists.

— Suns 129, Clippers 124 (Phoenix leads, 2-1)
Phoenix outscored Clippers 75-73 in a frenetic second half.
Devin Booker scored 45 points for the Suns.
Kawhi Leonard didn’t play for the Clippers.

— Happy 80th birthday to the great basketball analyst Bill Raftery, who has been coming into our living rooms on TV for the last 40 years. Raftery was Seton Hall’s coach when the Big East first started. Happy birthday coach!!!

Saturday’s 6-pack
All-time home run leaders, among active players;
507— Miguel Cabrera, Det
461— Nelson Cruz, SD
382— Giancarlo Stanton, NYY
353— Mike Trout, LAA
342— Joey Votto, Cin
333— Evan Longoria, Az

Quote of the Day
“Philly is a very hard media market. We were 9-0 and I did my presser and they say, ‘Coach, we want you fired.’ And I said, ‘We’re the No. 1 defense in the NFL right now, in every statistical category. Why do you want me fired?’ ‘You don’t blitz enough.’ I said, ‘Well we lead the league in sacks by 30-plus sacks, so if you want to come call the defense, then you can have at it.'”
Arizona Cardinals’ head coach Jonathan Gannon

Saturday’s quiz
Milwaukee Brewers played for one year in a different city, before moving to Wisconsin and becoming the Brewers in 1970. What team were they in 1969?

Friday’s quiz
Sacramento Kings used to call Cincinnati home; they were the Cincinnati Royals back then.

Thursday’s quiz
2014 was the last time the Angels made the playoffs.

************************************************** ****************

Saturday’s Den: Wrapping up a busy Friday…….

Hawks 130, Celtics 122 (Boston leads 2-1)
Atlanta led 74-67 at the half; not a lot of defense there.
Hawks shot 56% from the floor, 15-34 on the arc.
Home team won all three series games.

Knicks 99, Cavaliers 79 (New York leads 2-1)
New York led 45-32 at halftime.
Cleveland shot 38.8% from floor, 7-33 on arc.
Every Cavalier starter was minus-16, or worse.

Nuggets 120, Minnesota 111 (Denver leads, 3-0)
Denver shot 57.1% from the floor.
Jokic scored 20 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, dished out 12 assists
Minnesota’s four subs shot a combined 4-17 from the floor.

— Clippers-Lakers-LA Kings all play in the same arena; used to be called Staples Center, now it is the Crypto com Arena. They’re having a busy week there:

Thursday 10:30— Suns @ Clippers
Friday 10:00— Oilers @ Kings
Saturday 3:30— Suns @ Clippers
Saturday 10pm— Grizzlies @ Lakers
Sunday 9:00— Oilers @ Kings
Monday 10:00— Grizzlies @ Lakers

Guys who change the set-up from basketball to hockey and back again will be logging some overtime this week, that’s for sure.

LA Kings 3, Edmonton 2 OT— Kings have led a game for just over 8 minutes in this entire series, yet they led the series 2-1, with a pair of overtime wins.

— Good night of baseball Friday; in 6 of 14 games, the winning run scored from the 7th inning on.

Rays 8, White Sox 7— Brandon Lowe’s 2-run walk-off homer capped a 3-run 9th inning rally, and Tampa Bay is now 17-3. Rays scored four runs in 1st, trailed 7-4 in the 4th.

Cubs 13, Dodgers 0…….Pirates 4, Reds 2…….Seattle 5, Cardinals 2
NL Central standings:
Brewers 14-6
Pirates 14-7
Cubs 12-7
Cardinals 8-12
Reds 7-13

Arizona 9, San Diego 0— Zac Gallen tossed 7 shutout innings against a Padre team that is the most disappointing team in the big leagues. In their last six games, San Diego scored 0 or 1 run in five of them; Gallen got 21 whiffs on 66 swings from Padre hitters.

Mets 7, Giants 0— San Francisco is now 6-13, 0-6 if they won their previous game. Mets got seven shutout innings from Joey Lucchesi, who was making his first start since 2021.

A’s 5, Rangers 4— Good week for the A’s, who actually won a game they trailed 4-0 in first inning. Oakland is 4-7 in games when winning run scores from 7th inning on; they’re 0-9 in all their other games. Rookie Jordan Diaz’s first major league homer was the game-winner.

Angels 2, Royals 0— Shohei Ohtani tossed seven shutout innings, struck out 11.

Astros 6, Braves 4— Houston trailed 4-1 after six innings; spots 7-9 in Houston lineup were 5-11, with three runs scored. Alvarez hit the game-winning homer in the 9th inning.

— Big change in college football rules; the game clock won’t stop after first downs anymore, which will greatly reduce the numbers of plays in college football games. It will shorten games, and make them lower scoring.

Another, more obscure change was that they changed the rules on certain types of blocks. As a result, Army’s coach announced that the Cadets won’t run the triple option anymore. Most of the service academy teams have run some kind of option offense for years.

— Former Arizona Cardinals’ GM Steve Keim was on a podcast; he told a story about when the Cardinals interviewed Nick Bosa before the 2019 draft.

Bosa told Keim: “I think you guys are probably going to draft that little quarterback (Kyler Murray), and if you do, I will haunt you for the rest of your career.”

But the Cardinals did draft Murray and since then…….
— they’ve had one winning season out of four
— they haven’t won a playoff game
— they went 10-22-1 at home
— Murray has a $52M cap hit next year, and is coming off major knee surgery
— Keim got fired this past winter

— Tampa Bay Rays have hit a home run in each of their first 20 games, tying the all-time record at the start of a season.

— Toronto Maple Leafs are first NHL team ever to give up 7+ goals in the first game of a playoff series, then score 7+ goals in the second game.

— College basketball transfer portal never stops……..
Caleb Grill transfers from Iowa State to Missouri
2020— Iowa State
2021— UNLV
2022-23— back to Iowa State
2024— Missouri

Creighton star Ryan Nembhard transferred to Gonzaga; he played two tears for the Bluejays, scoring 11.8 ppg, dishing out 4.6 assists/game. His brother Andrew played for two years with the Zags, before heading on to the NBA’s Indiana Pacers.

Gonzaga also added Wyoming big man Graham Ike Friday; Ike missed last season with a lower leg injury, will have three years of eligibility left. Ike averaged 19.5 ppg, 9.6 rebounds/game in 2021-22, leading Wyoming to a 25-9 season and an NCAA Tournament bid.

— Toronto Raptors fired coach Nick Nurse, four years after he won an NBA title in Toronto; Nurse went 252-179 in five years with Toronto, winning the title in his first year as head coach. Raptors were 41-41 this past season.

— 76ers’ star Joel Embiid sprained his knee, is out for Game 4 against Brooklyn.

Tony Bloom

Sunday’s quiz

Seattle SuperSonics were an NBA team from1967-2008, but then they moved to another city. Which current NBA franchise used to be the SuperSonics?

Saturday’s quiz

Milwaukee Brewers played for one year in Seattle, before moving to Wisconsin and becoming the Brewers in 1970- they were the Seattle Pilots in 1969.

Friday’s quiz

Sacramento Kings used to call Cincinnati home; they were the Cincinnati Royals back then.

**************************************************

Sunday’s Den: Wrapping up a sports Saturday……..

— 76ers 96, Nets 88
Philadelphia sweeps the series, 4-0, their first series sweep since 1991.
Nets have now lost their last 10 playoff games; they were 0-8 vs Philadelphia this season.
Nets also paid Ben Simmons $35,448,672 this season; he didn’t play in the playoffs.

— Suns 112, Clippers 100
Phoenix grabs a 3-1 series lead with this win.
Durant scored 31 points, had 11 rebounds, 6 assists.
Booker scored 30 points, had 9 rebounds, 7 assists.

— Heat 121, Bucks 99
Miami led 66-53 at half, grabs a 2-1 series lead.
Duncan Robinson scored 20 points, was +24 in 24:00 off the bench.
Heat’s subs were a combined +70 in this game, Bucks’ were minus-45.

— Big day for the road teams in NHL playoffs; all three overtime games Saturday were won by the visitors, including the Golden Knights scoring at 3:40 of the second OT to win 5-4, after they blew a 4-1 third period lead in Winnipeg.

— Rays 4, White Sox 3 (10)— Chicago intentionally walked Wander Franco with a runner on 2nd in the 10th inning, in a 3-3 game; Randy Arozarena foiled that strategy with the game-winning hit, as Tampa Bay improves to 12-0 at home. Rays lead the AL East by 4.5 games.

— Marlins 6-3, Guardians 1-2— Miami sweeps a twinbill in Cleveland, improves to 12-9; they’re 8-2 in their last ten games, despite Sandy Alcantara missing his start with biceps tendinitis.

— Rangers 18, A’s 3
Adolis Garcia hit three home runs, knocked in 8 runs.
A’s signed this Japanese pitcher, Shintaro Fujinami; he is freakin’ terrible. In four starts, he has pitched 15 innings, allowed 24 runs. They have him pitching every Saturday because that’s what they do in Japan, six-man rotations. He needs to go back to Japan.

Garcia had 16 total bases in this game, only the 25th time ever a player had 16+ total bases in one game. The MLB record is 19, set by Shawn Green in 2002.

— Pirates 2, Reds 1— Pittsburgh is 15-7; they even gave manager Derek Shelton a contract extension this week. Pirates are getting 6+ solid innings from their starting pitcher every game, and that is what you need to win these days, 18+ outs from your starter.

Pirates are only half a game out of first place in NL Central, very surprising.

— New York 3, Toronto 2— Alex Manoah/Gerrit Cole were locked in a 0-0 pitchers’ duel into the sixth inning; DJ LeMahieu got a pinch-hit, walk-off single in 9th inning to end it.

— Royals 11, Angels 8— Kansas City scored five runs in 9th inning; Angels fall to 0-6 in games where the winning run scored from the 7th inning on.

— Clarification on the new college football rule, where the clock doesn’t stop after a first down anymore; the clock will stop after a first down, in the last 2:00 of each half.

— Last year, when the Astros won the World Series, every Astro player got $516,347, up 19% from the year before, thanks in part to the expanded playoff format.

— Arizona Diamondbacks’ manager Torey Lovullo grew up in Santa Monica, CA; his father was a director on Hee Haw, the old country music TV show with Roy Clark and Buck Owens.

Diamondbacks are 12-10, still lead the NL West by a game over the Dodgers.
