GAME RECAP
STAMPEDERS KEEP ARGOS WINLESS IN DEFENSIVE DRIVEN VICTORY
CFL.CA STAFF

CALGARY ? The Toronto Argonauts will continue the search for their first win of the season after falling 26-16 to the Stampeders in Calgary on Thursday night.

A promising start by either side of the ball for the Argos had them keeping pace with the Stamps. However, endurance proved to be a strength of the Stamps despite a competitive defensive performance put forth by the Two-Tone Blue.

Both defences combined for six interceptions and five quarterback sacks.

In his first game dawning the Double Blue, Tyler Crapigna got the Argos on the board first with a 50-yard field goal. The former Saskatchewan Roughrider sat out the entire 2018 campaign after suffering an injury in training camp and Thursday?s game was the kicker?s first game back since.

After a promising drive that saw the Argonauts moving the ball, backed by a defensive front that tallied three sacks up to this point, Calgary?s Brandon Smith turned the tide on Toronto by jumping in front of a McLeod Bethel-Thompson pass towards the end of the first quarter.

A few short plays later after being set up with positive field position, and Nick Arbuckle connected with Juwan Brescacin for his second touchdown reception of the year.

Arbuckle passed for 191 yards as he completed 20 of his 30 pass attempts. His two touchdowns would be matched by two interceptions by the young pivot.

Special teams ensured the continued momentum shift in favour of Calgary after Fraser Sopik flew in off the edge for the block on a punt attempt by the Argos.

The ensuing drive had the ball placed on Toronto?s 35-yard line, resulting in a Rene Paredes field goal from 30 yards out to extend the Stamps lead to seven.

In the second quarter, Chris Rainey surpassed Keith Stokes and moved into 10th all-time in return yards.

Later in the quarter, as both defences dug in their heels, Arbuckle worked his offence deep into the Toronto end of the field. However, wanting to take it into the end zone, the young Stamps? pivot lobbed a ball up into the waiting hands of Alden Darby.

With less than a minute and a half to work with, Bethel-Thompson marched the Argos offence downfield with seven straight completed passes, including the touchdown connection with Armanti Edwards. After a roughing the passer call on the conversion, the Argos couldn?t cap off their scoring drive with a 2-point conversion on two attempts.

Tre Roberson continues his dominance from the corner position for Calgary. Luckily for Bethel-Thompson, it wasn?t an interception to the league-leader. After completing a pass to Edwards, linebacker Cory Greenwood lodged the ball loose, opening the way for Roberson to scoop and dash his way to the end zone to push the Stamps up 19-9.

Minutes later, Raheem Wilson snagged his first interception of his CFL career.

Making up for lost time after going down to injury against the BC Lions in Week 3, Juwan Brescacin caught his second touchdown of the game following Wilson?s interception as 22 of Calgary?s 26 points had come off of turnovers at this point.

Brescacin caught five passes for 64 yards along with his two touchdowns.

Toronto managed to piece together another drive of seven straight completions by Bethel-Thompson, capped off with a touchdown by James Wilder Jr., his second receiving touchdown of the season.

Crapigna?s convert narrowed Calgary?s lead, bringing the Argos to within ten points late in the third quarter.

A game filled with turnovers by either side continued to be dictated by the defence in the final seconds of the third quarter. Toronto?s Micah Awe stepped in front of a pass and having himself a lengthy return before being tripped up. Moments later, the seesaw effect continued as Cory Greenwood got his mitts on the ball, his first interception in his five-year career in the league. He?d also add a fumble recovery to his stat line in the fourth quarter.

All in all, Bethel Thompson finished the game throwing four interceptions.

With the win, Calgary improves their record to above .500 (3-2) while the Argos remain through six weeks of the regular season.

The Stampeders will be back in action next Thursday, taking on the Ottawa REDBLACKS in the nation?s capital. As for the Argonauts, they?ll look for their first win of the season in Edmonton when they kickoff against the Eskimos in Week 7?s edition of Friday Night Football.

Total:

Game Overview

Two weeks ago, Ottawa was on the wrong end of a 29-14 loss to Winnipeg closing as a three-point home favorite. The total stayed UNDER the 54-point closing line. That game was 9-9 at halftime before they were outscored by 17 points in the second half. Quarterback Dominique Davis scored a pair of touchdowns running the ball.

The Blue Bombers? strong start can be attributed to an offense that is averaging 34.5 points a game. They have also gotten some strong play from a defense that leads the CFL points allowed (19.8). They jumped out to a 21-0 lead against Toronto in the first quarter and cruised to their fourth win on the year.

GAME RECAP
NICHOLS SETS FRANCHISE RECORD AS BOMBERS DEFEAT REDBLACKS
CFL.CA STAFF

WINNIPEG ? Matt Nichols set a franchise record with 19 straight completions as the Winnipeg Blue Bombers rolled to a 31-1 home victory against the Ottawa REDBLACKS on Friday night. The Bombers improved their record to 5-0 for the first time since 1960.

Defensive back Winston Rose got things going for Winnipeg with a pick-six in the first quarter, and the offence took over from there with Nichols completing 25 of 29 passes for 295 yards and two touchdowns. Nichols connected on 86 per cent of his pass attempts.

Jonathon Jennings got his first start at quarterback for Ottawa and completed six of 15 passes for 45 yards and an interception against an impenetrable Winnipeg defence. Willie Jefferson, Anthony Gaitor and Jackson Jeffcoat all recorded sacks for the Bombers, and defensive back Chris Humes capped off Winnipeg?s dominant defensive performance with an interception.

Running back Andrew Harris moved into 11th place on the CFL?s all-time rushing list in the win, finishing the game with 63 rushing yards on 14 carries while also adding 68 receiving yards and a touchdown on five catches. Quarterback Chris Streveler also contributed 35 rushing yards and a touchdown for the Bombers.

Kenny Lawler led Winnipeg?s receivers with five catches for 83 yards and his first career CFL touchdown.

John Crockett had a solid rushing performance for the REDBLACKS with 15 carries for 88 yards.

It was an uncharacteristically slow start to the game for the Bombers?s offence with three consecutive two-and-outs, but Winnipeg?s defence stepped up in the opening quarter to give the team an early lead. Rose used brilliant timing to jump a route and intercept a Jennings pass before returning it 71 yards to the end zone for the pick-six score. Rose now has an interception in three straight games. Justin Medlock kicked the convert to give Winnipeg a 7-0 advantage.

Ottawa got on the board near the end of the first quarter when a 75-yard punt from Richie Leone went out of bounds for a single, but the Bombers responded right away on offence with a nine-play, 75-yard drive that saw Nichols complete a 20-yard strike to Lawler and a 15-yard touchdown pass to Harris. The versatile running back found space behind the REDBLACKS? coverage to get open in the right side of the end zone for the catch. Medlock added the extra point to put Winnipeg up 14-1.

The Bombers added to their first-half lead when Lawler came through with another key play, hauling in a 24-yard pass from Nichols and gaining an extra 30 yards to reach the end zone for the score. Medlock kicked the extra point to make it a 21-1 ball game. Nichols finished the first half with 192 passing yards and two touchdowns on 14 completions.

Crockett had a solid first half on the ground for the REDBLACKS with 12 carries for 80 yards, but the offence struggled to move the ball through the air against Winnipeg?s defensive pressure and tight coverage.

Harris added more yards just before the half with a 34-yard gallop down the field that set up a two-yard rushing touchdown from Streveler. Streveler faked the handoff to Harris before accelerating around the right edge of Ottawa?s defence for his fifth rushing touchdown of the season. Medlock added the convert to put the Bombers up 28-1 heading into half time.

Ottawa?s defence had a solid goal line stand in the third quarter to shut down Winnipeg?s attempt to extend its lead after a long drive. Receiver Daniel Petermann put the Bombers in position to score after catching a short pass and taking the ball to the one-yard line, but REDBLACKS linebacker Jerod Fernandez came up with a big defensive stop on third down to prevent Streveler from crossing the goal line.

But Streveler helped the Bombers extend their lead in the fourth quarter by putting the team in field goal range with a big 24-yard gain on the ground. Medlock knocked the 33-yard field goal through the uprights to give Winnipeg a 30-point advantage with just under 12 minutes to play.

Will Arndt finished the game at quarterback for Ottawa, but the Bombers? defence sealed the victory for good when defensive back Chris Humes intercepted an Arndt pass.

The Ottawa REDBLACKS will host the Calgary Stampeders next Thursday in Week 7 action, while the Winnipeg Blue Bombers will travel on the road to square off against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats next Friday.

Game Overview

High expectations have been met with a very disappointing performance in BC. The arrival of Mike Reilly at quarterback has failed to invigorate an offense that is averaging just 20.5 points per game. He was held to 157 yards passing in last Thursday?s loss to Edmonton with John White rushing for 53 yards on 11 attempts in the team?s 210 yards of total offense. The Lions? defense has allowed an average of 31.6 points in five games.

The Roughriders are coming off a Week 4 bye after losing to Calgary 37-10 the week before as five-point home favorites. The total stayed UNDER 51 ? points in that game and it has stayed UNDER in three of their first four outings. Saturday will be the first meeting in a home-and-home series against BC. Cody Fajardo has gotten the call at quarterback for an injured Zach Collaros. He has thrown for 945 yards and four touchdowns against two interceptions.

Betting Trends

-- The Lions have a 7-3 edge both SU and ATS in this West Division matchup over the past 10 meetings. They have also won four of the last six meetings SU in Saskatchewan. The total stayed UNDER in 10 of the last 13 meetings at Mosaic Stadium.

GAME RECAP
ALS KEEP ROLLING WITH HOME WIN OVER ESKS
CFL.CA STAFF

MONTREAL ? A strong defensive performance and big plays from Vernon Adams Jr. helped lead the Montreal Alouettes to a 20-10 home victory against the Edmonton Eskimos on Saturday. The Als have now won three straight games for the first time since 2016.

Adams completed 68 per cent of his passes for 191 yards and a touchdown to receiver Jake Wieneke. The athletic quarterback also did a bit of everything against the Esks, racking up 44 rushing yards on seven carries and hauling in a 21-yard touchdown catch from Eugene Lewis on a trick play.

Defence was the story for much of the game, and there were eleven combined two-and-outs in the opening half as both offences found it hard to gain significant ground. Als defensive backs Greg Reid and Taylor Loffer both intercepted Trevor Harris. Harris completed 29 of 43 passes for 271 yards in the loss.

Montreal Running back William Stanback chipped in 84 total yards on the ground and through the air to help Montreal sustain important drives.

Edmonton kicker Sean Whyte contributed three field goals, but saw his streak of 17 consecutive successful kicks come to an end. Penalties were costly for Edmonton, as two interceptions were called back due to illegal contact penalties.

Lewis had the first big play of the game for the Als with a 21-yard catch that got the team?s first scoring drive going. Adams then broke free two plays later for an 18-yard run up the middle of the field after juking defensive lineman Nick Usher. The athletic quarterback capped off the drive with a 21-yard touchdown catch on an incredible trick play pass from Lewis.

Adams looked like a true receiver as he gained 12 yards after the catch and made Esks defensive back Monshadrik Hunter miss a tackle on his way into the end zone for the opening score. Boris Bede added the convert kick to give Montreal a 7-0 lead.

The Als? defence followed up the team?s strong offensive start when defensive back Greg Reid picked off Harris on the next drive. The interception was the first thrown by Harris since last season.

Als defensive back Ryan Carter was called for a pass interference penalty in the second quarter after Harris chucked a flea flicker pass down the field. The penalty resulted in solid field position for the Esks, but Montreal?s defence held strong and forced a 17-yard field goal from Whyte.

Running back Jeremiah Johnson made his presence known for Montreal later in the half with a thundering 43-yard catch-and-run all the way down to the Esks? three-yard line. But defence stole the show once again as Edmonton?s defensive front refused to give up ground, forcing the Als to settle for a 10-yard field goal from Bede to make the score 10-3.

The Esks appeared to get their first major of the game after Harris threw a beautiful 33-yard touchdown pass to receiver Kenny Stafford just before half-time, but the play was called back due to a holding penalty on Edmonton. The Esks then added to their lead with another field goal after receiver Natey Adjei put the team in range by gaining 16 yards on a pair of catches. The successful 34-yard kick from Whyte made the score 10-6 heading into the second half.

A solid 15-yard reception from Stafford got things started for the Esks in the third quarter, and Whyte would add his third field goal of the game a few plays later on a 48-yard kick to make it a one-point game. The kick was Whyte?s 17th consecutive successful field goal.

But the Als responded on the following drive with their second touchdown of the game. Stanback opened things up with an 18-yard catch-and-run, and Adams followed it up a play later with a 15-yard sprint into Edmonton territory. Adams then put the finishing touches on the drive with a five-yard touchdown toss to Wieneke. Bede added the extra point to make the score 17-9 with under five minutes to go in the third quarter.

Whyte saw his field goal streak broken just before the end of the quarter when his second 48-yard attempt of the game hit the left upright. Montreal?s offence took over and Stanback added another key play by turning a short catch into a 19-yard gain shortly before the game went into a weather delay.

Montreal?s defence notched another turnover after the delay when Loffler intercepted Harris.

A big 49-yard play from Esks receiver Ricky Collins on third down made things interesting down the stretch, but it was too little too late as the Als walked away with their third straight win.

The Edmonton Eskimos will host the Toronto Argonauts next Thursday in their Week 7 matchup, while the Montreal Alouettes will get a week off to rest before they host the Ottawa REDBLACKS in Week 8.

GAME RECAP
RIDERS WIN BACK-AND-FORTH CLASH WITH LIONS
CFL.CA STAFF

REGINA ? The Saskatchewan Roughriders came out on top in a back-and-forth battle against the BC Lions on Saturday Night, combining big offensive plays and relentless defensive pressure to claim the 38-25 home win.

A thrilling 100-yard kickoff return touchdown from Marcus Thigpen gave the Riders a one-point lead heading into the second half, but the Lions continued to stick around until three consecutive touchdown drives from the Riders in the second half sealed the victory.

Cody Fajardo connected on big passes early to give Saskatchewan the lead and finished with 17 completions on 23 pass attempts for 278 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Fajardo also used his legs to make an impact with 53 rushing yards and a touchdown on eight carries.

Charleston Hughes had a dominant defensive performance for the Riders with 10 tackles, three sacks and two forced fumbles. Hughes is now up to eight sacks on the season.

Riders receiver Shaq Evans stepped up with his biggest game of the season, racking up 158 yards and a touchdown on just five catches.

Mike Reilly completed 14 consecutive passes at one point despite constant pressure from the Riders? defence. Reilly completed 31 of 40 passes for 346 yards, a touchdown and an interception in the loss.

Lions kicker Sergio Castillo made all four of his field goal attempts for the Lions, and receiver Bryan Burnham had another productive game with eight catches for 106 yards.

The Riders got on the board first with a single point off of a 73-yard punt from Jon Ryan, but BC quickly responded with a 50-yard field goal from kicker Sergio Castillo.

Fajardo then got things rolling for the Riders on offence with a 36-yard strike to receiver Shaq Evans. Evans went up high in traffic to make an incredible catch, and Fajardo followed up the big play with a 39-yard touchdown pass to receiver Kyran Moore. Fajardo scrambled to his right to evade pressure and made a nice throw on the run to find Moore for the touchdown, and kicker Gabriel Ferraro added the extra point to give Saskatchewan an 8-3 lead.

The Lions answered back with a big play of their own on a 53-yard pass from Reilly to Shaq Johnson, but the promising drive stalled and Castillo added a 24-yard field goal to cut the Riders? lead down to two points.

BC?s defence picked off Fajardo on the final play of the opening quarter when defensive back Victor Gamboa reeled in a tipped ball for his first ever CFL interception.

The Lions grabbed the lead in the second quarter on Castillo?s third field goal of the game, a 29-yard kick that made the score 9-8 with twelve minutes to go in the half. But Saskatchewan jumped back on top later in the quarter when BC elected to surrender a safety deep in their own territory, giving the Riders a one-point advantage.

Reilly led a solid offensive drive before the half that included a 16-yard run and a 39-yard pass deep down the field to receiver Bryan Burnham. The huge catch from Burnham brought the ball into Riders? territory, and Burnham moved it even closer on the next play with an eight-yard catch-and-run. Reilly capped off the drive with a one-yard touchdown run, and Castillo added the extra point to give the Lions a 16-10 lead.

But the Lions? lead did not last long at all, as the Riders responded right away with a 100-yard kickoff return touchdown from speedster Marcus Thigpen. Ferraro added the extra point to put the Riders up 17-16 heading into half-time.

The Riders added another single point off of a 77-yard punt from Ryan to start the third quarter. But Reilly began to find a rhythm, putting together a drive that led to a 12-yard field goal from Castillo that gave the lead back to BC. Reilly connected on key passes to Johnson and Jevon Cottoy to set up the field goal.

Fajardo and the Riders? offence responded with a scoring drive of their own that saw Fajardo find space for a 19-yard run before finishing off the drive with a tough four-yard touchdown run. Ferraro kicked the extra point to give Saskatchewan a 25-19 lead.

Reilly had the Lions driving to score again, but Hughes came through with another big play and got to Reilly for the strip-sack. Hughes also recovered the fumble, and the Riders? offence then capitalized on the turnover.

Evans made another incredible catch to set up a three-yard touchdown run from running back William Powell that extended the team?s lead in the fourth quarter and grabbed momentum for good. The Riders went for the two-point conversion but were unsuccessful.

Evans sealed the victory for the Riders later in the quarter with a huge 50-yard touchdown catch. Ferraro added the convert kick to make it a 38-19 ball game with under four minutes to play.

Reilly and the Lions? offence came roaring back to score again on a drive to end the game, with Reilly throwing a nine-yard touchdown pass to receiver Lemar Durant. But it was too little too late as the Riders walked away with the 38-25 win.

Both teams will square off again in Week 7 when the BC Lions host the Saskatchewan Roughriders on July 27.

Week 6 CFL Betting Preview (Saturday, 7:00 p.m. ET)
BC Lions vs Saskatchewan Roughriders

Week 6 of the CFL season gets going on Thursday with the winless Toronto Argonauts in Calgary to take on the Stampeders, but it's a matchup between two other struggling teams that closes out the week that gets our attention this week.

The BC Lions went out and made the biggest splash in free agency by signing QB Mike Reilly, hired Calgary's DC DeVone Claybrooks to help sure things up defensively, and it's all gone wrong for the Lions through the first five weeks of the year.

Mike Reilly has been sacked the most times of any QB in the league, he and the rest of his offense got embarrassed at home last time out in a 33-6 loss to Edmonton, and defensively the Lions allow the most points per game of any team in the West at 31.6/game. It's all been ugly for BC this year, and at 1-4 SU ? their only win being a walk-off rouge against the lowly Toronto Argos, they'd better turn things around soon.

Saskatchewan hasn't been much better at 1-3 SU with their only win coming over Toronto as well, although there were two close road losses to begin the year out East that put them in this position. A 37-10 defeat in their last outing (at home) against Calgary was rather embarrassing as well, and hopefully for Riders fans, the fact that they had Week 5 off is probably a good thing. It's now up to the Riders to show that they used that extra prep time wisely and continue to add to the Lions misery in 2019.

So after last week's play on the 'over' in the Montreal/Ottawa game pushed our record to 3-1 ATS on the year, where should your money be going in the finale for Week 6? Let's break it down:

YTD: 3-1 ATS

CFL Odds: Saskatchewan (-5); Total set at 50.5

Betting lines for Week 6 came out on Tuesday afternoon and if you are a big believer in incorporating handicapping the market just has much as handicapping teams as I am, it's hard to ignore what we've seen from the market for this game already. Saskatchewan opened as a less than FG favorite for this home game off their bye (-2/2.5) and was promptly bet up and up until it reached it's current number. The total got hit on the low side for a move of a full point (51.5 to 50.5) as well.

That's quite an early statement on what the market really thinks of this BC Lions team as there is a strong belief that there is no end in sight to their 2019 struggles, and expecting Reilly and company to all of a sudden turn it around on the road against a rested team is something nobody wants to get behind.

That's an understandable position for sure, as there hasn't been much of anything good from the Lions in any of their four games. Their lone win saw them blow a lead late and win on a missed FG, so even in a positive result, it's not like things went well for them. Obviously it's still early in the week and we could very well see some buyback on BC at this number, or if it gets higher, but like the rest of the market, I'm not interested in backing the Lions here.

At the same time, while taking a home team off a bye is a favorable situation to get behind, especially with a Roughriders team that's got high expectations for 2019, they've got to go out and show that they can play at a consistently high level as well. That blowout loss to Calgary was a dud of a game in all regards, and it really feels like Saskatchewan has simply been trying to find their footing since the cheap shot their starting QB Zach Collaros took early in Week 1 put him on the shelf. Hopefully the bye week helped with that process as they've moved on with Cody Fajardo under center, as even Farjardo's probably feeling more comfortable being the guy with each passing week.

But teams off a bye week this year after having played at least one game (ie not counting Toronto's Week 1 bye), are just 3-2 SU on the season. Two of those three wins have been by a TD or less, and the two losses have been by at least 13 points. Yes, league wide results like that don't necessary apply to any/all specific teams in this league, but it's enough to cause pause on the Riders, especially with the best of the number long gone. Heck off a bye or not, it's really hard to pull the trigger on a line that's already moved a full three points from open and expect to win long term.

Which means the side is getting passed on again this week, and it's on to the total we go. Obviously the early move there has been to the 'under', and with both teams coming off outings where they scored just 10 points or less, you can understand that sentiment.

However, going back to those league-wide post-bye week trends this year (again not including Toronto's Week 1 bye), teams off a bye week (Saskatchewan) have averaged scoring 24.2 points the next time out on the field, while giving up 25.8 points/game on defense in those spots. That's 50 total points right on the nose which is where this number currently sits, meaning it's time to go into more specific details regarding these two teams.

(For those that are wondering, if you include Toronto's 64-14 loss in Week 2 after their bye, those numbers change to 22.5 points scored post-bye, and 32.16 points allowed post-bye).

Regarding specifics, this BC team knows they are built to have success with their offense doing the bulk of the heavy lifting, and putting up six points like they did a week ago simply won't cut it. The Lions didn't make Reilly the highest paid player in the league to try and grind out 18-17 wins like they had in Toronto, and with a defense that gives up 30+ per game and is still working out the kinks in terms of getting acquainted with Claybrooks philosophy, it's going to take some time before the Lions can trust that they'll win games without putting up 30+ points themselves.

Well I'm not prepared to back the Lions ATS-wise, I do believe the offense will be able to bonce back nicely this week, as the Riders defense is still working out its own kinks under a new coaching regime. Reilly hasn't been great, but the Lions O-line shares plenty of responsibility in BC's early struggles, and against that defensive pressure the Riders can bring, this week of prep should be a good one for that unit.

At the same time, the Riders offense shouldn't have many issues moving the ball up and down the field against this Lions defense who like I said earlier ? is probably not going to come close to hitting their stride until their Week 8 bye. Two weeks to prepare to go up against this suspect Lions defense is going to help Saskatchewan score at least those 24.2 points post-bye week teams have put up this year, and I would not be surprised if they are the the final West Division team to put up 30+ against BC this year. The Eskimos (twice), Stamps, and Blue Bombers have already accomplished that feat, and this week it will be Saskatchewan's turn.

With the massive line move in favor of the Riders we've already seen, you've got to like their chances of being able to put up points, and with BC still relying on Reilly to carry the load, and in desperate need of a bounce back offensive performance themselves, this game should get well into the 50's or even 60's when all is said and done.

CFL Best Bet: Over 50.5 points

Analysis

BC Lions (1-5)
saw their woes continue, falling 38-25 on the road against Saskatchewan (2-3). The Lions are also a dismal 1-5 ATS, covering only in Calgary back in Week 3 as 10 1/2-point underdogs. As single-digit 'dogs, the Lions are 0-3 ATS and they also failed to cover their only pick 'em and only game as a favorite.

For the Roughriders, they picked up their eighth cover in the past 10 meetings with the Lions. The Lions are also 1-5 ATS across the past six road games, and they fell to 2-10 ATS in the past 12 against losing teams.

Calgary (3-2) failed to cover for the fourth time in five outings this season, but they were able to avoid the upset bug against lowly Toronto (0-5). The Argos picked up their second cover of the season, although they scored 17 or fewer points for the fourth time in five contests. The 'under' has connected in three of the past four for Toronto. The under is also a perfect 3-0 in the past three for the Stamps after the over hit in the first two outings.

Montreal (3-2) continues to trend in the right direction. After opening the season 0-2 SU/1-1 ATS, they have won and covered three in a row. Defense has been a major part of their turnaround, as they allowed 73 total points in the two losses, and an average of 19.3 PPG in their past three wins.

The win for the Alouettes came at the expense of Edmonton (3-2), who have now dropped two of the past three after opening 2-0 SU. The Esks are now 3-9 ATS in the past 12 during Week 6, for whatever reason. Montreal is also a perfect 8-0 ATS across their past eight games played on a Saturday, while going 8-1 ATS in the past nine against winning teams. The Esks also saw their five-game cover streak in Montreal snapped.

Winnipeg (5-0) had their most dominant showing to date, emasculating Ottawa (2-3) by a 31-1 score. The RedBlacks opened 2-0 SU/1-1 ATS, but they have now dropped three straight while failing to cover four in a row, including 0-2 SU/ATS against the Bombers. Ottawa has been outscored 60-15 in the two meetings so far.

Hamilton (4-1) returns in Week 7 after their bye, looking to improve upon their 4-1 ATS mark.

Team Betting Notes

-- The Stampeders travel to Canada's capital city looking to keep the RedBlacks down. Calgary loves Week 7, as they're 8-0 ATS in their past seven during the week. The RedBlacks are 0-4 ATS in the past four games, and 1-5 ATS in the past six in the month of July. The under is 5-0 in Calgary's past five, and 5-1 in the past six in the month of July for the Stamps. The under is 10-2 in Ottawa's past 12 July outings. However, the over is 3-1-1 in the past five meetings in Ottawa, and 7-3-1 in the past 11 in this series overall.

-- The Argos search for their first win on the road against the Esks on Friday night. Toronto is just 7-20 ATS in the past 27 games on the road, and 2-7 ATS in the past nine overall. They have also failed to cover the past four overall. The over is 5-1 in Toronto's past six against winning teams, while the over is 5-2 in Edmonton's past seven at home. The Argos have covered four in a row in this series, while the over is 10-3 in the past 13 meetings overall, and 5-1 in the past six in Edmonton.

Week 6 Betting Recap

The home teams swept Week 6 in the CFL straight-up while going 3-1 against the spread. The run started Thursday night with Calgary?s 26-16 victory at home against Toronto, but the Stampeders could not cover as heavy 13 ?-point favorites. On Friday night, Winnipeg stayed perfect of the year both SU and ATS with a 31-1 rout over Ottawa as 11 ?-point home favorites.

Saturday?s action started with Montreal pulling off its third-straight upset with a 20-10 victory against Edmonton closing as six-point underdogs at home. Later that night, Saskatchewan raced past British Columbia 38-25 as a six-point favorite in the first meeting in that home-and-home series.

Thursday, July 25

Calgary Stampeders (3-2 SU, 1-4 ATS) at Ottawa RedBlacks (2-3 SU, 1-4 ATS)
Point-spread: Calgary -5

GAME RECAP
PAREDES? FIVE FIELD GOAL NIGHT LIFTS STAMPS TO WIN OVER REDBLACKS
CFL.CA STAFF

OTTAWA ? Rene Paredes hit the game-winning field goal to give the Calgary Stampeders a 17-16 victory over the Ottawa REDBLACKS on Thursday night.

The REDBLACKS held the lead late in the fourth quarter, but after deciding to concede a safety with under two minutes to go, the Stampeders marched down the field to win the game.

Nick Arbuckle went 30 of 37 through the air for 370 yards.

Markeith Ambles had five catches for 79 yards, while Reggie Begelton and Eric Rogers had 78 and 71 yards, respectively.

Ka?Deem Carey had 70 yards on the ground, but he was forced out of the game with an injury. Terry Williams came in and had 47 rushing yards.

The Calgary defence forced a pair of fumbles and hauled in two interceptions. Chris Casher led the way on that side of the ball, finishing with four tackles, a sack, and a forced fumble.

Jonathon Jennings went 15-for-18 for 125 yards and a touchdown in the loss.

The first half would prove to be a defensive battle between the two teams. Turnovers would plague each offence, with the REDBLACKS committing three to the Stampeders? two.

Jennings? woes under centre continued to start the game, as he started 5 of 8 for 22 yards and two interceptions. The first came when Robertson Daniel undercut a slant route and made a diving effort for the pick. Jennings would be intercepted again in the second quarter, this time by DeShaun Amos, who went up and nabbed a jump ball on a deep shot to the end zone. Running back John Crockett also fumbled the ball on the second possession of the game.

Kickers Rene Paredes and Lewis Ward had all of the respective team?s points through two quarters. The pair had three field goals apiece, with Ward hitting a 53-yard kick for his final score of the half. With his first field goal of the game, Ward set a new CFL record for consecutive kicks made with 62.

Paredes would open the third quarter with his fourth field goal of the game to make it 12-9. Eric Rogers helped move his kicker into position with a pair of catches that totalled 23 yards.

The first major of the game would come in the fourth quarter. Jennings would lead the team down the field, going five-for-five on the drive for 58 yards. He?d cap off the drive by finding Brad Sinopoli over the middle, and the receiver would do the rest, bouncing off a tackler to find pay dirt. Ward would add the point after to make it a 16-12 game.

Arbuckle had to lead his team down the field for the game-tying score with under three minutes to go, and after being forced into a second-and-10 situation, he hit Ambles with a 28-yard strike down the right sideline. He?d find Richie Sindani for a 24-yard catch-and-run, but as he stretched out for the goal line, Corey Tindal forced a fumble that would be recovered by Sherrod Baltimore. That looked to be a game-deciding play, but the REDBLACKS would give the Stamps another chance.

Ottawa would be backed up to their goal line, but instead of punting the ball and giving the Stampeders decent field position, they?d take the safety, giving Calgary the opportunity to win the game with a field goal.

Williams gave the Stamps solid starting field position with a 28-yard return. Arbuckle would work down the field and run the clock down, setting the stage for Paredes to walk it off. He?d do just that, hitting a 31-yarder to seal the 17-16 final.

With the win, the Stampeders will travel back home for a showdown with the Edmonton Eskimos on Aug 3. Ottawa will be heading into their matchup with the Montreal Alouettes on Aug 2 looking to avoid its fifth straight loss.
