GAME RECAP
ESKIMOS ICE ARGOS IN SHUTOUT AT COMMONWEALTH
CFL.CA STAFF

The offensive woes continue to plague the Toronto Argonauts as they remain without a win through six games after being iced by the Edmonton Eskimos 26-0 Thursday night at The Brick Field at Commonwealth Stadium.

With the win, the Esks move to 4-2 on the season, tied with their cross-province rival Stamps for second in the West Division. Meanwhile, the Argos sit at the bottom of the East Division standings after being handed their first shutout since 2009.

Having gone two games this season already without passing for a touchdown and losing both of those games, Trevor Harris managed to do enough for the Eskimos with his 298 yards passing through the air off of 27 of 39 without needing to pass for a major in a winning effort.

Despite an opening drive that had the Eskimos progress deep into the Argos? end of the field, Trevor Harris couldn?t cap off the drive ? having a pass attempt escape him over the middle of the field and into the hands of Toronto?s Justin Herdman.

Head coach Jason Maas challenged the play, having it overturned and giving Edmonton the ball on the 2-yard line. However, a Cooper fumble would make it all for not on the ensuing play, coughing the ball up back into the hands of the Argonauts.

A tenacious Edmonton defence took the heat off of their own offence, getting the ball back when Monshadrik Hunter undercut an underthrown ball by McLeod Bethel-Thompson. The interception marked Bethel-Thompson?s ninth interception on the year.

A week after coughing up seven turnovers against the Stampeders, the Double Blue handed over the ball on five occasions Thursday night.

The Eskimos were sure to make this time around count. Following a touchdown that was called back and a pass interference call against Toronto, Trevor Harris was able to plunge his way in from 1-yard out to break the ice and put the Esks ahead.

In the second quarter, the Eskimos? defence continued their pressure on the Argos? quarterback while the offence of the Green and Gold were able to put themselves in position to allow Sean Whyte to chip in a pair of field goals, one from 21 and 47 yards, giving Edmonton a 13-0 lead.

A designed swing play resulted in a fumble by the Eskimos after an incompletion counted as a lateral. The Argos defence was able to scoop up the loose ball, giving their offence some signs of life in the final moments of the half.

Despite some forward progress moving into scoring range, Bethel-Thompson was unable to find room to breathe, turning the ball over back to Edmonton after a fumble off of contact.

The teams made their way to the locker rooms with Edmonton maintaining a 13-0 lead, holding the Double Blue to just 119 yards on offence.

Toronto hoped to spark some new energy into their offence, electing to start Dakota Prukop in the second half after Bethel-Thompson completed just five of 13 pass attempts for 83 yards in the first half. At the end of the day, he?d complete just six of 18 for 90 yards.

Even with a new quarterback behind centre, the Eskimos defence wasn?t phased one bit, forcing a quick third down to get their offence the ball.

Replacing an injured CJ Gable as the Esks? starter out of the backfield, Shaq Cooper crossed the goal line in the third quarter for his first CFL touchdown off of a 4-yard dash. Cooper kept himself involved in the Eskimos? offence for the night, racking up 128 yards on the ground and 48 yards through the air.

The ensuing drive by the Argos, the struggles continued as Prukop threw his first career interception into the hands of Jordan Hoover, marking his first pick of his career.

At the start of the fourth quarter, the Argonauts reverted back to their original signal-caller, putting Bethel-Thompson the nod once again to manage the huddle. Changes at quarterback wouldn?t solve the team?s offensive woes though as they would go to commit a third-down turnover on their quarter-opening drive.

Whyte would add one more boot to his stat line before the day was out, splitting the uprights from 37 yards out, his third field goal of the game.

Prukop replaced Bethel-Thompson on the following offensive drive by the Argos, being the third time Toronto changed their signal-caller during the game.

Prukop would throw eight of 13 for 68 yards and two interceptions in his time spent behind centre.

Whyte put the game on ice with his fourth field goal of the game, capping the 26-0 victory.

Up next for the winless Toronto Argonauts will be a trip to Winnipeg next Thursday to see if they can right their ship against the Blue Bombers. As for the Eskimos, they?ll be up in the season?s first instalment of the Battle of Alberta when they square off against the Calgary Stampeders next Saturday.

Friday?s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here??.

13) Twins 10, White Sox 3? In his first 12 AB?s vs Chicago this season, Nelson Cruz was 8-12 with six home runs. Minnesota is on a MLB record-setting home run pace this year.

There have been seven 3-HR games at Guaranteed Rate Field, only one by a Chicago player.

12) Funny moment on the White Sox telecast last night, when they showed the only home run Giants? broadcaster Duane Kuiper hit in his 12-year major league career.

Kuiper was a pretty good player, mostly for Cleveland; he hit .271 in his career, but his OPS was only .641, so not lot of pop there. The reason the White Sox showed his homer last night is because he hit it off of White Sox broadcaster Steve Stone, who went 15-12 that year, but lost 9-2 to the Indians that night.

Stone was a good sport (he is a great analyst) and it made for a couple laughs.

11) After averaging 16,843 fans for their first 16 home games, Minnesota Twins have averaged 31,516 fans over their past 36 games at Target Field. They?ve had eight sellouts this season. Winning generates interest.

10) Under went 22-8-1 in baseball Tuesday/Wednesday; handicapping baseball is a daily grind and a tough one. The balls are juiced, but you still have to make contact for them to leave the yard.

9) Angels swept Freeway Series from Dodgers 4-0 this year, first time they?ve ever done that.

8) Tampa Bay Rays? ace Blake Snell is done for several weeks; he?s going to have his elbow scoped- they hope to have him back in September.

7) Baseball stuff:
? Tyler White was traded from Houston to the Dodgers for minor league P Andre Scrubb.
? Tampa Bay put P Blake Snell (elbow) on the IL.
? Texas put OF Joey Gallo (broken hand) on the IL.
? New York put OF Brett Gardner (knee) on the IL.

6) If you care about such things, Falcons are -2 over Denver with a total of 34 in the Hall of Fame game in Canton next week. First NFL game of the preseason.

5) Pittsburgh Steelers open on road (at Foxboro) for 5th straight year; since ?97, Pitt is 1-8-1 vs spread when an underdog in their road opener; five of their last six RO?s stayed under total.

4) Oft-injured Troy Tulowitzki retired Thursday after a 13-year playing career; he hit .290 with an .856 career OPS, made five All-Star teams, was a big part of the 2007 NL champ Rockies.

3) Happy birthday (Thursday) to one of my boyhood heroes, Biff Pocoroba, who turned 66 years old this week. A switch-hitting catcher, Pccoroba hit .257 in a 10-year career, making the 1978 All-Star Game (he caught the 9th inning).

Also, Caddyshack hit theaters this week in 1980. Very funny movie.

2) 947 people have already signed up for the $1,500/entry Westgate SuperContest in Las Vegas, where you pick five NFL games a week against the spread.

1) Wow, the Federal Trade Commission fined Facebook $5B for losing control over tons of personal data and mishandling its communications with users. Apparently, $5B is only one month?s worth of revenue for Facebook, which is kind of staggering.

PREVIEW
BOMBERS, TICATS MEET IN CLASH OF DIVISION LEADERS
CFL.CA STAFF

HAMILTON ? The Winnipeg Blue Bombers look to cement themselves as the best team in the CFL on Friday Night Football when they take on the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Tim Hortons Field.

The teams enter Friday at the top of their respective divisions with a combined record of 9-1. A matchup in which both teams have played at least five games and have one loss combined is extremely rare, a scenario that?s unfolded only five times since 1958.

There is nothing to separate the Tabbies and the Bombers statistically. Hamilton has the most points-per-game, while Winnipeg has the second-most. The Blue Bombers have the fewest points allowed per game and the Tiger-Cats have the second fewest.

The Blue and Gold defence could get even better with Adam Bighill returning to the lineup. The reigning CFL Most Outstanding Defensive Player hasn?t seen any action since Week 3, but his addition makes the Bomber defence even more of a threat.

?It?s going to be a great battle. They?re a fantastic team,? Bighill told BlueBombers.com. ?They pose a handful of unique challenges on offence with all the explosive plays they?ve had and [Brandon] Banks leading the charge. You?ve got [Jeremiah] Masoli who can throw the ball all over the field and extend plays.?

Bighill re-entering the lineup will only improve an already stingy Winnipeg run defence. The Bombers have given up a mere 59.2 rushing yards per game, unsurprisingly the lowest in the league.

Hamilton is still without starting running back Sean Thomas Erlington, so if they are unable to establish the ground game early, it could be a long night for the Ticats. The three backs listed on the Hamilton depth chart ? Maleek Irons, Anthony Coombs and Jackson Bennett ? have 35 carries between them this year.

Should the Tabbies struggle on the ground, expect a big game from Masoli. The seasoned quarterback already has two games of 400 passing yards or more and has thrown more than 30 passes in four of his five games this year.

?We?re going to do what we do ? try to stay as balanced as possible,? Masoli told Ticats.ca when asked about facing the Bombers defence. ?Just stringing success together, that?s the biggest thing we can do; keep their offence off the field, help our defence and try to play the field position battle.?

His counterpart at quarterback is winning ball games, despite not lighting up the stat sheet. Matt Nichols has only tossed one pick in 2019, despite averaging 9.1 yards per completion. Remarkably, Nichols has not thrown for over 300 yards yet, but his team is nevertheless 5-0.

?The thing I?ve liked most is the lack of satisfaction in the locker room,? Nichols said. ?Even after our last win it didn?t totally feel like a winning locker room. It?s just one of those things where everyone feels like we can be better, feels like we can?t wait to get back to work for the next week.?

Hamilton will get a boost on the offensive line, as dependable tackle Chris Van Zeyl will see his first action since July 4. The Tabbies boast one of the finest pass protection units in the league, having allowed only seven sacks over their five games. But with Van Zeyl out of the lineup last game, the Calgary Stampeders got to Masoli four times.

The Bombers have nine sacks this season, with Jackson Jeffcoat having three to his name. Masoli has been leaned on by the Ticats, and the Bombers cannot afford to let him get comfortable in the pocket, especially if the Hamilton run game fails to get going.

Friday?s matchup will pit two long time teammates against one another as head coaches. Mike O?Shea and Orlondo Steinauer played on the same defence for nine years; in 2000 with the Tiger-Cats and from 2001-2008 as members of the Toronto Argonauts, winning the Grey Cup together in 2004.

The duo were both on the Argos coaching staff for a number of years after their retirement, before leaving for opportunities with other franchises.

?I think we?re both cut from the same cloth,? Steinauer told Ticats.ca. ?I actually pictured us coaching together ? which happened. Going against each other never really crossed my mind until he took the path to Winnipeg. I?m happy for him, but when the ball?s kicked off, what?s it going to be like? Just the next game.?

BY THE NUMBERS

100 ? Hamilton offensive lineman Mike Filer is slated to play in his 100th career game on Friday.

0 ? The number of rushing touchdowns by Andrew Harris this season. He does have three receiving TDs.

4 ? The Ticats are looking to make it four straight victories at Tim Hortons Field for the first time since they opened the stadium with an eight-game winning streak in 2014.

5 ? Offensive plays ran by the Ottawa REDBLACKS in Winnipeg territory last week.

Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m. ET and can be seen on TSN, RDS and ESPN+, and followed live via CFL.ca Game Tracker.

GAME RECAP
TICATS OVERCOME LOSS OF MASOLI TO HAND BOMBERS FIRST LOSS
CFL.CA STAFF

HAMILTON ? The Hamilton Tiger-Cats overcame the loss of starting quarterback Jeremiah Masoli to edge the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 23-15 at home on Friday night. The team relied on strong defensive play and solid special teams to win its fourth straight at home and improve its record to 5-1.

Momentum was firmly on Hamilton?s side after the offence scored on the opening drive, but the team was dealt a major blow when Masoli left the game late in the first quarter with a lower body injury. Backup quarterback Dane Evans replaced Masoli under centre and completed 13 of 25 passes for 94 yards and an interception.

Masoli completed six of seven passes for 59 yards and also scored a 22-yard rushing touchdown before exiting with the injury.

The Ticats? defence stood strong all night against Matt Nichols and the Bombers? high-powered offence, notching three interceptions, two fumble recoveries and a sack while allowing only one touchdown. Nichols finished the game with 261 passing yards and a touchdown on 29 completions.

Ticats kicker Lirim Hajrullahu made all three of his field goal attempts and defensive back Jumal Rolle had a big game for Hamilton with two interceptions and four tackles.

Running back Andrew Harris had another productive game for Winnipeg with 117 total yards on eight rushes and eight catches. Bombers defensive back Winston Rose added a pair of interceptions.

The Ticats? offence struck right away on the opening drive, with Masoli getting the ball to receivers Brandon Banks and Luke Tasker for first down gains before calling his own number and breaking free for a 22-yard touchdown run. Masoli outran the Bombers? defenders and got to the edge on the left side of the field for his longest rush of the season. The ensuing two-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful with defensive back Winston Rose intercepting Masoli.

Momentum remained on Hamilton?s side when Ticats defensive back Jumal Rolle intercepted a Nichols pass just two plays into the Bombers? first offensive drive. Rolle returned the interception 45 yards down the field in front of the roaring home crowd and appeared to score a touchdown until a review ruled him down at the one-yard line.

Evans came in for the short yardage package and finished off the drive one play later with a one-yard rushing touchdown, and Masoli completed the two-point convert pass to running back Maleek Irons to put the Ticats up 14-0.

Hamilton was dealt a major blow soon after that when Masoli went down with a non-contact lower body injury while trying to avoid the Bombers? pass rush. Evans replaced Masoli under centre before Masoli was officially ruled out for the remainder of the game.

Hamilton?s defence kept things rolling to start the second quarter by forcing another turnover, with defensive back Tunde Adeleke picking off Nichols for his first career interception.

The Ticats continued to take shots down the field with Evans at quarterback, but Rose stepped up again for Winnipeg and intercepted an Evans throw while the quarterback was trying to complete a deep pass.

The turnover gave the Bombers? offence a much-needed boost, and a 27-yard rush from running back Andrew Harris and 25-yard catch from receiver Kenny Lawler put Winnipeg in position to get on the board. Nichols began to find his stride through the air and finished off the long drive with a beautiful 25-yard touchdown pass to Adams.

Adams did a great job holding on to the football as he came down to the ground, and Justin Medlock kicked the convert to cut Hamilton?s lead down to seven points with eight minutes to go in the first half.

The Bombers then added two points on a safety after a 71-yard punt from Medlock pinned the Ticats? offence deep in their own end, but Hamilton managed to answer back with a 21-yard field from Hajrullahu to extend the lead once again before half-time.

Hajrullahu added another field goal for the Ticats on a 27-yard kick that made it a 20-9 ball game midway through the third quarter, but Winnipeg responded with a 33-yard field goal from Medlock to make it a one possession game.

Hamilton?s defence picked up the slack with Masoli out and forced another key turnover when Rolle picked off Nichols for his second interception of the night. The Ticats added another field goal off the turnover with Hajrullahu knocking through a 42-yard field goal just after the start of the fourth quarter to put the Ticats up 23-12.

The Bombers added to their total down the stretch with an 18-yard field goal from Medlock after the three minute warning, but the team?s fourth quarter comeback attempt fell just short with under a minute left when Nichols was sacked by defensive end Adrian Tracy.

Both teams will be in action again next Thursday, with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers taking on the Toronto Argonauts on the road and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats traveling to face the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Saturday?s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind??.

13) Amazing game in Anaheim late Thursday/early Friday; Orioles beat the Angels 10-8 in 16 innings, in a game that ended at 4:28am here in the east.

Baltimore blew a 3-run lead in the 15th inning, then became the first team since 1986 to win a game after blowing a lead of 3+ runs in the 15th inning or later. OF Stevie Wilkerson became the first position player to get a save, since saves became an official stat.

6 hours and 18 minutes. 571 pitches. 20 pitchers, one of whom was supposed to start Friday?s game for the Angels. Interesting night.

12) In Masahiro Tanaka?s last two starts vs Boston, he faced 33 batters; 18 of them scored.

11) James Paxton is the 4th pitcher in MLB history to allow a leadoff home run in three straight starts (d?Arnaud, Blackmon, Betts). Brad Radke, Brandon Backe and Yovani Gallardo are the other three pitchers, in case you were wondering.

10) LA Rams did a smart thing and signed coach Sean McVay/GM Les Snead to contract extensions thru the 2023 season. Well deserved.

9) Yesterday I mentioned the Westgate SuperContest in Las Vegas, where you put up $1,500 and pick any five NFL games against the spread each week. Should?ve mentioned that last year?s winner got $1.4M, which ain?t bad.

Golden Nugget has a similar contest where you pick seven games a week, but you can also pick college games.

8) Oakland WR Antonio Brown starts training camp on the non-football injury list; no one is saying yet what the injury actually is.

7) Baseball stuff:
? Cubs acquired P Derek Holland from the Giants
? Dodgers recalled C Will Smith from AAA, put 1B David Freese (hamstring) on IL. .
? Astros activated SS Carlos Correa from the IL.

6) UConn is paying the AAC $17M to leave and join the Big East a year from now.

5) Cleveland State hired Florida State assistant Dennis Gates as its new basketball coach; he has a total rebuild on his hands? it is late July, and they only have four players.

4) This week is the first time EVER that a major leaguer hit three home runs in a game three nights in a row; Cano, DeJong, Cruz, and then Mookie Betts made it four days in a row Friday.

3) New Jersey Giants? WR Corey Coleman tore his ACL Thursday, WR Sterling Shepard broke his thumb. Not a lot of depth at that position for Big Blue.

2) LA Clippers are going to build a new arena in Inglewood; not sure what is wrong with the Staples Center, other than they probably want all the arena?s income to themselves, rather than share a building with their rival Lakers.

1) If the NBA ever wanted to do an event some summer to make a fortune for itself or for some charities, a 64-player 1-on-1 tournament would be huge.

Imagine Westbrook vs Durant, or Lebron vs Kawhi.

They did hold a 1-on-1 tournament back in the early 70?s for a couple years; they aired the taped/edited games at halftime of their Sunday national TV games, but it ended in part because Julius Erving?s agent wouldn?t let him play. The better players didn?t have much to gain by playing, which was too bad.

It?ll never happen nowadays; too much risk of an injury, but it would be fun to see.

GAME RECAP
POWELL?S BIG PERFORMANCE LEADS RIDERS PAST LIONS
CFL.CA STAFF

VANCOUVER ? William Powell broke free for his best game of the season to help lead the Saskatchewan Roughriders to a 45-18 road victory over the BC Lions on Saturday night. The Riders improved their record to 3-3 in a tough West Division.

Powell finished the game 146 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries, including a 42-yard rushing score on his longest run of the season. Powell also added a two-point conversion while averaging seven yards per carry.

Mike Reilly and the Lions? offence could not get anything going for most of the game against a dominant defensive performance from Saskatchewan, and the veteran quarterback only managed to complete eight of 19 passes for 66 yards while facing heavy pressure for four quarters. The Riders? defence forced numerous two-and-outs and racked up four sacks against Reilly while holding the Lions to just 110 combined rushing and passing yards.

Cody Fajardo started the game efficiently with accurate throws for the Riders, completing his first eight passes for 72 yards and a touchdown. The 27-year-old pivot completed 21 of 26 passes for 169 yards in the win while also adding 46 rushing yards on seven carries.

The Riders? special teams continued to shine by scoring a return touchdown against the Lions for the second straight week. Loucheiz Purifoy returned a kick 87 yards to the end zone in the first quarter after the Lions? conceded a safety, putting Saskatchewan up by double digits. Purifoy finished with 152 return yards.

BC grabbed some momentum just before half-time with a highlight-reel 118-yard return touchdown from Ryan Lankford on a missed field goal, and Lankford gave BC life again late in the third quarter with an equally impressive 89-yard kickoff return touchdown. Lankford finished the game with an incredible 277 return yards.

The Riders got on the board on their opening offensive drive with a 48-yard field goal from kicker Gabriel Ferraro after Fajardo put the team in range by completing all three of his pass attempts. Momentum continued to build for Saskatchewan after that when a booming 62-yard punt from Jon Ryan pinned the Lions? offence deep and forced the team to concede a safety three plays later, making the score 5-0.

The ensuing kickoff set up a big special teams opportunity for the Riders? return squad, and they certainly made the most of it. Purifoy caught the kick, broke contain on the right side of the field and found daylight for an 87-yard return touchdown. Ferraro added the convert kick to put the Riders up 12-0 with just under five minutes to go in the first quarter.

BC managed to cut the Riders? lead down to nine points after the start of the second quarter when kicker Sergio Castillo made a 35-yard field goal. Reilly helped get the team in position for the field goal with a pair of first down gains on throws to receiver Bryan Burnham.

But Fajardo kept things rolling when Saskatchewan got the ball back. The Riders? quarterback completed accurate strikes to receivers Naaman Roosevelt and Shaq Evans before finding Kyran Moore for a 22-yard touchdown pass.

Moore found space in the end zone behind defensive back T.J. Lee, and Fajardo did the rest by placing the pass perfectly in stride for the Riders receiver. Ferraro kicked the extra point to make it a 19-3 ball game with nine minutes to go in the opening half.

BC?s defence notched a turnover near the end of the half when a successful challenge from head coach DeVone Claybrooks revealed that defensive back Branden Dozier had knocked the ball out of Fajardo?s hands before the quarterback was down after a nine-yard rush. Linebacker Maleki Harris recovered the fumble for BC, but the Riders? defence stood strong and forced a quick two-and-out.

Things didn?t stop there for the Riders in the first half, as Powell broke free for his longest rush of the season on a 42-yard touchdown run just after the three minute warning. Ferraro added the extra point to give Saskatchewan a 26-3 lead.

But the Lions grabbed some much-needed momentum before the half with a special teams touchdown of their own. A 42-yard field goal attempt from Ferraro went wide right and ended up in the waiting hands of Lankford, and the speedy athlete proceeded to take the ball the length of the field for an 118-yard return touchdown. Castillo kicked the convert to make the score 26-10 heading into half-time.

Saskatchewan added another point to its lead after the start of the third quarter on a 72-yard punt from Ryan that went through the Lions? end zone for a single. Powell continued his strong performance later in the quarter with an eight-yard touchdown run, but the Lions responded with another explosive special teams play from Lankford.

Lankford turned on the jets once again and took the ensuing kickoff to the house for an 89-yard return touchdown. Reilly followed up the special teams touchdown by completing a two-point convert pass to Burnham that made the score 34-18.

Ferraro added a 19-yard field goal to extend the Riders? lead midway through the fourth quarter, and Powell added his third touchdown of the game down the stretch to help seal the victory. Powell reached the end zone on a one-yard touchdown run after big catches from Moore and Cory Watson set up the score, and the Riders? running back followed it up by adding the two-point conversion on the ground to give the Riders a 45-18 victory.

Week 8 will see the Saskatchewan Roughriders host the Hamilton Tiger-Cats next Thursday, while the BC Lions will have a week off before facing the Ticats in a road matchup on Saturday, August 10.

Analysis

BC Lions (1-5)
saw their woes continue, falling 38-25 on the road against Saskatchewan (2-3). The Lions are also a dismal 1-5 ATS, covering only in Calgary back in Week 3 as 10 1/2-point underdogs. As single-digit 'dogs, the Lions are 0-3 ATS and they also failed to cover their only pick 'em and only game as a favorite.

For the Roughriders, they picked up their eighth cover in the past 10 meetings with the Lions. The Lions are also 1-5 ATS across the past six road games, and they fell to 2-10 ATS in the past 12 against losing teams.

Calgary (3-2) failed to cover for the fourth time in five outings this season, but they were able to avoid the upset bug against lowly Toronto (0-5). The Argos picked up their second cover of the season, although they scored 17 or fewer points for the fourth time in five contests. The 'under' has connected in three of the past four for Toronto. The under is also a perfect 3-0 in the past three for the Stamps after the over hit in the first two outings.

Montreal (3-2) continues to trend in the right direction. After opening the season 0-2 SU/1-1 ATS, they have won and covered three in a row. Defense has been a major part of their turnaround, as they allowed 73 total points in the two losses, and an average of 19.3 PPG in their past three wins.

The win for the Alouettes came at the expense of Edmonton (3-2), who have now dropped two of the past three after opening 2-0 SU. The Esks are now 3-9 ATS in the past 12 during Week 6, for whatever reason. Montreal is also a perfect 8-0 ATS across their past eight games played on a Saturday, while going 8-1 ATS in the past nine against winning teams. The Esks also saw their five-game cover streak in Montreal snapped.

Winnipeg (5-0) had their most dominant showing to date, emasculating Ottawa (2-3) by a 31-1 score. The RedBlacks opened 2-0 SU/1-1 ATS, but they have now dropped three straight while failing to cover four in a row, including 0-2 SU/ATS against the Bombers. Ottawa has been outscored 60-15 in the two meetings so far.

Hamilton (4-1) returns in Week 7 after their bye, looking to improve upon their 4-1 ATS mark.

Team Betting Notes

-- The Stampeders travel to Canada's capital city looking to keep the RedBlacks down. Calgary loves Week 7, as they're 8-0 ATS in their past seven during the week. The RedBlacks are 0-4 ATS in the past four games, and 1-5 ATS in the past six in the month of July. The under is 5-0 in Calgary's past five, and 5-1 in the past six in the month of July for the Stamps. The under is 10-2 in Ottawa's past 12 July outings. However, the over is 3-1-1 in the past five meetings in Ottawa, and 7-3-1 in the past 11 in this series overall.

-- The Argos search for their first win on the road against the Esks on Friday night. Toronto is just 7-20 ATS in the past 27 games on the road, and 2-7 ATS in the past nine overall. They have also failed to cover the past four overall. The over is 5-1 in Toronto's past six against winning teams, while the over is 5-2 in Edmonton's past seven at home. The Argos have covered four in a row in this series, while the over is 10-3 in the past 13 meetings overall, and 5-1 in the past six in Edmonton.

-- The Blue Bombers have covered 22 of the past 30 games on the road, and they're also 22-8 ATS in the past 30 against winning teams. The Tiger-Cats have managed to cover four of the past five overall, and they're 4-0 ATS in the past four at Tim Horton's Stadium in 'The Hammer'. However, the Tabbies are 1-7-1 ATS in the past nine games in the month of July. In this series, the under is 16-5 in the past 21 meetings, and 20-6 in the past 26 in Hamilton. The under is 6-0 in Winnipeg's past six against winning teams and 45-19 in the past 64 at home for the Ti-Cats.

-- The Roughriders and Lions play the back end of a home-and-home series, this time in Vancouver. The Riders are 2-6 ATS in the past eight in Week 7. They're 8-3 ATS in the past 11 inside the Western Conference, however. For the Lions, they're 2-10 ATS in the past 12 against losing teams, 1-8 ATS in the past nine overall and 1-4 ATS in the past five at home. Saskatchewan is also 4-0 ATS in the past four meetings, but 1-3-1 ATS in the past five trips to BC. The under is 19-7 in the past 26 in Vancouver, and 41-19-1 in the past 61 in this series.

CFL Betting Notes - Week 7

Week 6 Betting Recap

The home teams swept Week 6 in the CFL straight-up while going 3-1 against the spread. PREVIEW
ARGOS, BOMBERS MEET ON THURSDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL
CFL.CA STAFF

TORONTO ? The Toronto Argonauts face a difficult challenge to open up Week 8, as the league-leading Winnipeg Blue Bombers travel to BMO Field looking to avenge their first loss of 2019.

The Bombers are visiting the Argos in their second matchup of the year Thursday night at BMO Field in Toronto. Winnipeg won the first meetup handily on July 12, scoring on the game?s opening kickoff and never looking back in a 48-21 victory at Investors Group Field.

Toronto, still looking for win No. 1 on the season, made a trade Wednesday, acquiring quarterback Zach Collaros in exchange for a conditional fourth round pick in 2020. But the new acquisition won?t be able to help Thursday night as he?s still on the six-game injured list as the Boatmen head towards a Week 9 bye.

Despite losing their first game of the season last week against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, the Bombers are still confident as they try to return to the win column.

?We feel like we?ve had a good week of practice,? Bombers quarterback Matt Nichols said. ?We?re excited to stay here all week in a facility together in preparing for this game. We?re a confident bunch and ready to play some football.

?Guys are fired up to go out and play better than we did last week.?

The Argonauts, meanwhile, are trying to get back at Winnipeg after losing to them earlier this month. At the same time, they?re still looking for their first win in 2019. Argos head coach Corey Chamblin anticipates that the Bombers will be hungry to get back in the win column.

?Every time you look at a team you just played you kind of know the positives and negatives from going against them three weeks ago,? Chamblin said. ?Especially with them coming off a loss, they will make significant changes in terms of some of the things they do schematics-wise.?

Toronto is coming off a 26-0 shutout loss to Edmonton last week, but receiver Derel Walker remains upbeat about his team?s offensive abilities.

?Just finding what we can grow off of and the things that work well for us and building on that,? Argos receiver Derel Walker said. ?We?re functioning a little bit better as an offence. We were struggling a little bit earlier in the year. I don?t know what it was. It just wasn?t clicking together as an offence.?

Speaking of wide receivers, the Bombers will get Chris Matthews back after he missed three games due to injury. In two games this season, Matthews has three catches for 26 yards. He?s still trying to regain his 2012 form where he has 1,192 yards receiving.

?I?m definitely ready to make an impact,? Matthews said. ?I feel like it?s been long overdue. I was just talking to my receivers earlier today and I was telling them, ?I?ve really only played a game and a half, you guys have played six already. I?m behind the curve, but I?m extremely excited to be back out there.?

Receiver Darvin Adams will miss Thursday?s game. The Bombers? top receiving target left last week?s loss with an injury and was questionable throughout the week. Drew Wolitarsky, who was also considered questionable, will suit up.

The Bombers will also have defensive back Mike Jones in the game and he?ll handle kick and punt return duties for the team. Defensive end Jonathan Kongbo, receiver Rasheed Bailey, and defensive back Dexter Janke have also been added to Winnipeg?s roster.

For the Argos, Chamblin announced this week that McLeod Bethel-Thompson would receive the start. The 31-year-old was pulled twice in last week?s loss, completing just six of 18 passes for 90 yards and an interception. However, Dakota Prukop didn?t fare better in his first CFL snaps, throwing two interceptions on 8-of-13 passing.

Toronto won?t have Collaros, but the Argos will have Shawn Lemon back. The 30-year old defensive lineman has only played three games this year due to injury. Ian Wild is also back and he?ll start at weak side linebacker, moving Micah Awe to MIKE.

Receiver Armanti Edwards will return to the lineup, while fellow pass-catcher Llevi Noel is on the six-game injured list. Left tackle Isiah Cage missed last week?s game against Edmonton and he?ll return to his position this week.

BY THE NUMBERS

4 ? The last time the Winnipeg Blue Bombers lost consecutive games was Aug. 2018, when they were in the midst of a four-game losing streak featuring losses to Ottawa, Calgary, and Saskatchewan.

3 ? Thursday?s game will mark the third time in four games that the Bombers will have someone different handling return duties. Prior to Mike Jones?s inclusion in that position, Winnipeg relied on Charles Nelson and Kenny Walker.

25 ? The Argonauts aren?t in the greatest position at 0-6, and have lost eight straight dating back to the end of the 2018 season. But things could be worse. They still have ways to go to match the Ottawa franchise that lost 25 consecutive games between 1928 and 1933.

9 ? Argos? quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson is the league-leader in interceptions with nine. He?s thrown at least one interception in all but one game played this season.

Kickoff is at 7 p.m. ET and can be seen on TSN, RDS and ESPN2, and followed live via CFL.ca Game Tracker.
