It now appears that Miles never was out of it after all.

It really sounds like a two horse race at this point. Former players and big donors are backing Miles. Carr and some of the current staff are backing Ferentz. Carr and Miles are old enemies so this is no surprise. Backup candidates are Schiano, Pinkel and English. This list could grow, obviously. Apparently there is a personal issue that would not allow Kelly to leave Cincy just yet.

I expect this will all be wrapped up in the next 7-10 days as everyone's "season" will be complete. Martin will not wait to talk with Miles.

IMO it will be Miles so long as he can convince Martin (the AD) he's a changed man (was pretty wild during his last stint in A2) and that the recruiting mud Carr is flinging at him is unfounded.

I know that Miles took over an LSU program with at least 8 1st rounders on the roster and managed to not play in an SEC title game until his 3rd season. The cupboard was definitely more stocked at LSU upon his arrival than Michigan's is today. IMO, you guys should be praying for anyone but Miles at this point, especially since Pelini is heading in a different direction.

Cie you're an astute observer of college football but I think you're understating what Miles has done at LSU. Without that cheapshot to Dorsey, you guys are playing for the national title this year with greatly overestimated talent (sorry, but guys like Jacob Hester, Matt Flynn and the Lafell are not superstuds). The cupboard was probably more stocked at LSU upon Miles' arrival, but let's remember UM won't be taking any trips to the Swamp or Jordan Hare in the next few years. Let's also remember that LSU also got completely ass ended vs Florida last year by the officials, or Jamarcus Russell would have been the one torching OSU in the BCS title game.

Les Miles is no genius but he knows how to assemble a great staff and motivate players. That's all you really need to do at a place like Michigan. I'd be fine with his hire. I'd also be OK with Ferentz as he has proven he can do quite a bit with very marginal talent at Iowa.

Cie, I love you man....but did you forget Les' SEC Title game appearance in his first season at LSU.......not that that helps makes the case for Miles as UGA blew your doors off....maybe thats why you forgot.

I'm still trying to figure out how Les' team could only score 3 points in his most important league game last year with the #1 overall pick in the draft at QB.....then again UM only got 3 this year w/ the league title on the line, so maybe he fits right in!

A buddy of mine who lurks here just called me to point out the same thing. I obviously blocked it out. :mj07: Either that or the Vicodin I've been eating regularly since minor surgery yesterday is taking its toll;) (And no, Lucy11, you can't have any;))

Miles was outdueled by Richt in that SEC title game, and was fortunate to face a reeling (and poorly coached) Miami team in the bowl, or he would have likely gotten his butt whipped again.

His teams have under-achieved in big games including the SEC Championship in '05, Auburn/ FLA LY(13 points combined even though 3 skill players were later drafted in the 1st round) and both games they played this season while ranked #1.

He's done a solid job overall, and this year he really had to battle a massive injury bug, but I will not be sorry to see him go.

Hey Cie, yeah I figured you had blocked that one out.

Sorry to hear about minor surgery, hope all is right and that the vicodin is helping.

So, he underperforms in big games....sounds like he'll fit right in at UM......sadly, as a fan, I know this all too well.....of course, its where he played and started his coaching career, so he knows that tradition well. ;)

The funny thing about the Miles or bust crowd within the UM fan base is this notion that somehow he is going to come here and revolutionize a very staid and boring offensive philisophy.....ok, we might go for it on fourth down a whole lot more, but this is the same guy who plunged his halfback into the line four straight times with the game on the line vs Kentucky.

Bo would have been proud.

Still, I do agree w/ CWood.....the passion and motivation he would bring would be enough of an upgrade to get our sleeping giant of a program back into top form....plus he not only would scrap the current, outdated strenghth and conditioning program, but would also add a dose of 'this is what it takes to win in the SEC' mentality as far as training, practice and prep go.

Thats been as much of a factor in the Zooker's turnaround at Illinois as the recruiting classes he has brought in.....they look and fly around the field like an SEC squad, not a Big 10 one......we can only hope Zook finds a way to mismanage it somehow.

.

CW-- I agree with much of what you are saying, but part of the problem with Miles is is that rather than play his 5 star soph RB (Keiland Williams) or 4 Star soph (Charles Scott), he rides Hester like a horse into town. I have questioned his personnel decisions since day one.

Like you, I will be fine w/ Miles as our HC (especially if he finds a quality replacement for Pelini), but I am definitely not going to lose any sleep over him leaving.

Thanks CWood

Miles has really pulled the wool over a lot of people's heads - he has basically turned LSU into Okla St - 50-48/31-30/etc. - score a lot and potentially win a close one at the end - makes me sick to my stomach

Does someone have his SEC record ATS during his tenure? know that's not a really big deal but shows you how much he has truly underachieved since he came over - I, unlike Cie, will be pissed if Miles is still here following this year, as the program will decline directly into mediocrity

Assuming the old ball coach and Petrino don't take the job, who do you think LSU ends up with?

Mike Bellotti:shrug:

I've heard that Peterson, Kelly are out.

I like RichRod, but why come to LSU when he can compete for Nat'l title regularly by playing in the Big East.
