Offer extended to Miles' agent and a tentative agreement has been reached. The only deal breaker would be if Martin won't allow the kind of budget for coordinators that Miles has had at LSU. The i's should be dotted and the t's crossed by next Monday or Tuesday. Expect a presser no later than next Thursday.

Something to think about......

If Illinois makes the BCS as an at large, which is very likely should Mizzou win, then Michigan will be in the Capital One bowl (Wisky to the Outback). That means if LSU loses Saturday you are looking at UM/LSU in Orlando :scared

CWood,

Thanks for giving us some inside scoop on this one.....one question/clarification on the bowl situation......i figure Illinois would be a better bet for a BCS at large, if Missou losses, not wins.......typo on your part, or bad assumption on mine?

Otherwise, I think it is Alamo Bowl time for UM.....perhaps against Les' former school, Okie State.

And, it will be interesting to see if Martin/University agree to higher budget for assistants.......dream scenario for you, who would you like to see Miles tab as OC and DC.

As much as I think English still can be a real good DC, I would replace him w/ Tenuta in a heartbeat.....or Pellini.....of course, budget or no budget, UM might not be able to get either of them with some of the HC openings out there.

Not really sure about OC.....maybe Norm Chow.

Any thoughts?

You are correct, TP, I mistyped that one. If Mizzou loses then OSU gets the BCS championship bid and Illinois goes to the Rose Bowl. That would leave the Cap One open for UM.

Coordinators, I understand there's a pretty good chance Loeffler gets the OC position. He was Miles' first choice when he had to replace Crowton. Loefller turned down 300K plus to stay in Ann Arbor. The only other assistants I would expect to stay are Fred Jackson and Campbell.

If the price is right I'm told Tenuta would come with Les but that is strictly wild ass rumor at this point.

Mallory (LSU DB coach) is the only LSU assistant expected to come with him.

Interesting info on Loeffler.....i usually keep up with news, but I had missed his pursuit of Loeffler during the last off season......many like him, but some do think Henne and Navarre regressed during their stint at UM and wonder if Leoffler is any good.

Still, he would be well received by a majority because his name is not Mike DeBord....the zone scheme he brought in flat out blows, and I think we use it because we know our S/C is so bad we need to use a gimmicky blocking scheme to get by.....whatever happened to UM just blowing off the ball and flattening the defender right in front of you!!!!

This might be going too deep, but any insight/thought on what Les might do w/ S/C....Git is gone, but some say there's a natural replacement on staff who would make the changes necessary to upgrade that espcecially with a HC in place.....i think the name is Tolbert, but I could getting things confused there.

Tenuta would be awesome....some Techsters may disagree, but I think they've had a championship level D down there for a few years running, but crappy offense (I'm looking at you Mr. Ball) and the whole Chan Gailey experience has torpedoed them. It would be a great move for UM, so hopefully it happens.

Thanks again for the info!

You didn't miss it, it was on the way down low.

Zone blocking is gone (at least 100% zone blocking is gone). So is the "outside the hashes only" passing game.

S&C is a tricky one. Some say Gitt will stay around no matter what as he's a tenured prof and cannot be fired. Some say he'll retire. Others say he'll stay with the athletic department, but that Miles will demand a football specific S&C program like Beilein has in basketball. This is a huge issue for me. Gittleson is a dinosaur and needs to quit putting bad pounds on our players.

Zone blocking is a good tool to use at times to shake things up and confuse the D, so I figure we would still have a few zone plays.....i just hate it as our main offensive blocking philosophy...I despite on 3/1 we when call a zone stretch....you also need a real specific back in order to run it.....i think Minor and Brown are as good as advertised, but they struggle picking through the "holes" that zone blocking gives them......let the OL just fire out and block, and Michigan TB's will get yards....last few years, I think i've seen more negative running plays (or better put, Hart making a guy miss to turn a -2 to a NG or +1) than Ive seen in decades of watching the Maize and Blue.

Agree 100% about Git.....people laugh that UM still uses machines, for example......but you know that.....the national perception is that UM is the place that 5-star recruits go to get weaker and slow....its telling that Beilien would not come to UM w/o being allowed to do his own S/C.....cant believe Les or anyone else would not demand the same......a complete overhaul in football S/C woud launch UM back into prominence because the talent is already up there! This is not a rebuilding job.

Maybe I think too much of Michigan. I actually thought they would go out and get a good coach. I laughed at LSU for taking him and now I will laugh at Mich for taking him. :mj07:

You can laugh all you want, but if Les wins this weekend, he will have guided LSU to their best three year run in their history.

I understand he's not the OBC or Urban Meyer, but he's done a pretty damn good job for LSU while he's been there, and he's leaving the cupboards nice and full for the next guy.

If you watch enough college football, you'll learn one thing.....every coach ****s up and makes bonehead mistakes.....whether its Les, B Kelly or Schiano at UM next fall, there will still be bad decision for us the chew on at the Big House.....we'll be grumbling by the 2Q of the Utah game when we run right up the gut on 3/2, dont make it and punt.

Even the OBC and Urban have had head scratching moments this season......i mean really, what exactly is that we're seeing in South Carolina right now.....its not good coaching at all.....the last month has arguably been the worst of his career....Urban was schooled by Turberville this year!!!

Miles is actually a perfect fit for Michigan......its not a rebuilding chore.....his passion and love for the program will inject much needed energy into a team that has been rather lifeless for several seasons now.....yet, at the same time its zero risk for UM because he is a Michigan Man, knows the Michigan tradition knows how to take talented teams to victory lane.....he will be a success at Michigan.....so would just about every other guy they look at.

Now, is he the end all, be all coach.....no.....hardly.....if Carroll would leave USC, would Miles be a good hire there.....not so sure.....If Mack Brown leaves Texas, would Miles be the automatic, gotta have replacement.....no.....although I think that would be kinda cool because it would be fun to read along w/ Sun Tzu's rants! :142smilie

What are your opinions on Brian Kelly?

I like Kelly as a coach but there are some concerns about his abrasive personality and if he will be able to recruit at a high level.

I would have been okay with Kelly but I like the fact that Miles has proven he can win at a big name program where the target is on your back every week. It's one thing to fly under the radar and win where no one expects you to. It's another thing to win at a place like LSU or Michigan where just about every team you play has that game highlighted on their schedule. Miles is a proven winner and I am confident he will continue to do so at UM.

I think Carr would have done just as well at LSU as Miles has with that talent......Miles was overrated at Ok St. and has done nothing spectacular at LSU. A couple of 8-4 seasons at Michigan and they will be calling for his head.

I wasn't going to post this because it sdeems retarded, but since you said it first....

I received a text yesterday from a friend who always has reliable coaching change and recruiting info. He said 80% Saban to LSU w/ a huge buyout clause and a 10 year deal for less anually than his current Bama deal.

My buddy called Saban leaving to Miami and also called Miles' hire before it happened. Strange stuff:scared

Still, I won't buy this one til it happens. I realize it must be hell living in Tuscaloosa, but come on.

I thought the SEC was dramatic for its on the field play, but with coaches bolting for other league schools and such, the drama continues.

Is Mike Shula Bama's backup plan!??!?!

This should be interesting......might have to try and listen to some Bama sports talk for the impending meltdown once the Saban rumors begin to take hold.
