CW-- I agree with much of what you are saying, but part of the problem with Miles is is that rather than play his 5 star soph RB (Keiland Williams) or 4 Star soph (Charles Scott), he rides Hester like a horse into town. I have questioned his personnel decisions since day one.

Like you, I will be fine w/ Miles as our HC (especially if he finds a quality replacement for Pelini), but I am definitely not going to lose any sleep over him leaving.

He should of red shirted either Williams or Scott this year. Now both have to play next year due to Hester leaving.

I would redshirt the 4th RB this year for next year cant think of his name off hand..

Any coach brought in to coach LSU will have lots of offensive talent to work with. Any coach would be fine. Its on the defensive side of the ball that things have to be patched up. So whatever coach they hire that person has to bring in a damn good DC.

Also the next coach must want to stay here at least 10 yrs. This job is not a damn stepping stone to other jobs around the country.

E, I think that Spurrier would put up a couple in a few years. I am a FL homer (I am an Alumn) and it was alot of fun when he put us back on the map. However, I would love to see Steve at the helm of that program. My brother in law did his law schooling in Baton Rouge, and I had a blast with the bayou guys that I met while he was there. I don't think its going to happen, but it would be fun to watch.

Mike Bellotti:shrug:

I've heard that Peterson, Kelly are out.

I like RichRod, but why come to LSU when he can compete for Nat'l title regularly by playing in the Big East.

Belotti would be an excellent choice but Phil Night made sure he didn't leave for OSU in 2001 ($$$).

RichRod's agent contacted UM with interest but his NCAA skeletons scared off Martin to this point.

Peterson and Kelly have huge upside, but way too much risk.

Spurrier is the obvious choice and LSU will pay him what he wants but is he ready for another move?

I'm glad UM didn't hire Ferentz - I would have sold my season tickets if Martin hired him.

Let's get Urban Meyer ! :00hour

i have no particular interest about who michigan hires, but i would like to see them get the former central mich & now cin. coach kelley. i think he'll do for mich. what the guy at ohio st. has done for them. if not him then they should go after harbaugh. imo they need a fresh young coach, instead of a recyclable coach.

I have said all this year that Brian Kelly is the next great thing. I completely agree with you that this is the guy that should be at the top of everyone's list. Everything he has touched has turned to gold and he would rule at a major school

Kelly isn't a Michigan Man, but he's the best man

November 28, 2007

I know this is going to come as a shock, a slap in the face to the Michigan Men of the world. But hear me out.

Want an end-all, be-all coach, a guy who encompasses everything and lacks nothing? Then take a page from history and follow Ohio State's lead.

Hire Brian Kelly.

Seven years ago, when Ohio State had become a team that couldn't beat Michigan, the Buckeyes went out and did the unthinkable: They hired a coach from the NCAA's lower divisions, Youngstown State's Jim Tressel.

Now that Michigan has become a team that can't beat Ohio State, Kelly -- whose first head coaching job was at Division II Grand Valley State -- would be the perfect fit. Not Les Miles, not some NFL retread, not some guy Lloyd Carr thinks is the Michigan Man for the job.

This is about hiring the best man for the job.

Kelly, in his first season at Cincinnati, is a relentless recruiter, a guy who can draw up X's and O's with anyone. And -- in what would be a welcome change -- he oozes charisma. He is everything Michigan needs, with a history of winning championships in tow.

Four years ago, after he won his second straight national title at Grand Valley State, the reality of the business hit Kelly full force.

"If I wanted a chance to sit at the big poker table," he says, "I had to start at the bottom."

So in 2004 Kelly accepted a job at Central Michigan, which had one winning season in the previous nine, and went to work. Last year, he won a MAC championship. Then, only days later, he took the Cincinnati job. Eleven months later, the Bearcats are one victory away from just their second 10-win season in 120 years of football. Their first was in 1951.

Now the big table has an open seat -- and it's time to lay out the cards.

If you think Kelly is a gamble, consider where Tressel came from and where he is now -- one of three key hires of the past decade, along with Bob Stoops (Oklahoma) and Pete Carroll (USC), that changed the landscape of the game.

High rollers in Columbus wanted Glen Mason, the OSU alum who knew the way of Woody. Instead they got Tressel, briefly a Buckeyes assistant before he left after the 1985 season, built a national power at Division I-AA Youngstown State and was hired by Ohio State in January 2001.

Ten months later, the Buckeyes beat heavily favored Michigan. Two years later, they won the national title.

Few question the thinking behind Miles going to Michigan, his alma mater. Just like few would've thought twice about the Buckeyes hiring Mason. Seven years later, Tressel is the best coach in the game. Mason is unemployed.

"Athletic directors and presidents are tuned in much more now," Kelly says. "A lot of it is breaking through perceptions."

And embracing reality.

Hearing that LSU's most likely replacement is Jack Del Rio.

It is well-documented around these parts that he inquired about the position last summer, and he has ties to Louisiana since his wife is from here and apparently would like to come home.

I figured it would be a no-go based on the success Jax is having. I would place him ahead of Spurrier on my list being that he would be here for the long haul, and he has been a very succesful, defensive-minded HC in the tough AFC.

I would still prefer Petrino since he has proven his worth at the collegiate level, but it appears that if he goes anywhere it would be Auburn.

A stepping stone to the NFL for Saban is what it was.

Everyone else including Hallman, Dinardo, Archer, etc were all fired for lack of productivity. When Miles leaves, it will mark the 1st HC to leave for another program in a long time.

Can't argue w/ that, but for some reason I think he can get it done. Call it a hunch

with lsu's rich tradition...isn't there a candidate out there with ties to the program ?

Karl Dunbar was a former Tiger and NFL defensive lineman. Along the way, he coached DL at LSU and he is currently the DL coach for the Vikings.

Also, the TE coach at Auburn played at LSU.

I can't think of any others.
