YTD
5-4 (2-unit)
55-35 (1-unit)

725/726 Virginia Commonwealth @ George Mason under 126.5 (1-unit)

This will be a big game between the top two teams in the CAA tonight. This should be a close hard fought game. Last year these teams met on three occasions and not one time did a team surpass 61 possessions.

VCU's defense is one of the nation's best, leading the conference by allowing only 54.1 points a game. Coach Grant: "I think our guys realize, as young as we are, our defense will give us a chance every night. We have to be consistent on defense. Our guys understand and embrace that." The Rams are #13 in the league only allowing opponents to shoot 38.0% from the field. The Rams are also the nations #1 ranked team in perimeter defense only allowing opponents to shoot 25.5% from behind the line.

George Mason has had a run of high scoring offensive outings in conference games but most of those were against either bad defensive teams or faster paced conference teams.

The Patriots have averaged 62 possessions per game in conference play and the Rams have averaged 65 possessions. Typically these big conference games play a little more deliberate as seen in the three contests last season. The Patriots also have a solid defense holding conference opponents to 41.7% from the field. I think defense rules tonight and with the probably slower pace I?m on the under.

GAME: San Antonio Spurs @ Seattle SuperSonics

Jan 29, 2008 10:00PM
SPORT: National Basketball Assoc.
PICK: Seattle SuperSonics
Offered at: 7.5 WSEX

4* SEATTLE over SAN ANTONIO

In today?s edition of Rim Shots we noted the continuing issues of San Antonio when playing back-to-back nights ? the run is now at 22-34 ATS over the last 3+ seasons, including 2-6 this time around (you might seen a 1-7 from other sources, but we credit a cover for an overtime loss at Golden State because they did make the price in regulation). Part of the reason for that is that without a day to prepare for the opponent the magic of the Gregg Popovich game plans gets taken away. But even more is the fact that they are the Spurs, and no matter how poorly they show in any category, the oddsmakers do not have to adjust much ? there will always be takers to back them.
We do not see this as a spot in which that pattern turns around. This setting is now three games in four nights; four in seven; and five in nine; with a court change every time. Off of a showdown at Utah last night, and with a nationally-televised setting at Phoenix on Thursday, there is also nothing about this matchup to create any special spark. It is a classic ?win and move on? spot for a team that will indeed covet the ?W?, but lack the physical energy to get much more than that.
Do not underestimate Seattle when it comes to physical energy. Yes, the Sonics are on a 14-game losing streak. But some of that is mitigated by injuries that kept several key cogs out of the lineup, and note that since both Chris Wilcox and Luke Ridnour were able to return there have been point blank losses at home to the Lakers in overtime, and to the Rockets and Kings by just two points. We will call for a similar result here ? Seattle may not have the moxie to win this game outright, but with a deeper and fresher rotation the Sonics push a tired team to the very max.

Game: Pittsburgh Penguins at New Jersey Devils Jan 29 2008 7:05PM
Prediction:3* New Jersey Devils

Reason: Ai Simulator 3* graded play on the New Jersey Devils. This is a rare play in it?s own right by simply being a prohibitive favorite. 85% of my releases this NHL season have been on DOGS and the only way to consistently make money in both the NHL and MLB is to identify dogs that win. Or, if you prefer, to identify false favorites. Supporting this graded play is a system that has gone 48-10 for 83% since 1997. Play against a dog against the money line revenging 2 straight close losses versus opponent by 1 goal or less and is a well rested team playing 5 or less games in 14 days. Pittsburgh is ranked 23rd in PP killing allowing opponents to score at a 19.5% clip. Note that NJ is 19-7 against the money line (+9.7 Units) against poor power play killing teams with the opposition scoring on >17.5% of chances this season. Take the Devils.

Record: 38-21 OA 1-0 Yesterday >14-9-2 NBA<

Top Picks: 11-3-2

15* Golden State +3

Last nights winner brings my top pick record to 11-3-2. Tonight we go to this Warriors/Rockets Game. Don't be so quick to hop on the Houston band wagon. Houston 3-9 ATS against the Warriors on home floor. Also having a 8-12 Record at home. Golden State putting up impressive numbers, and I see them hitting from all cylinders tonight. Its gonna be close but I see the Warriors putting this game within a bucket against an injury/struggling Rocket team. GS always plays this team tuff and I have to go with the numbers on this one.

15* Wake Forrest -1.5

Wake Forrest 5-2 when favored by 2 or less. Everything in this game is favored to the home team in this one.

5* Suns -9.5

Free Pick: Raptors +2

Pittsburgh Penguins @ New Jersey Devils u5.0 (100)
Tue Jan 29 '08 7:05p

Both the New Jersey Devils and the Pittsburgh Penguins have been going Under with regularity lately, and we expect more of the same tonight.

The Devils have actually been a good Under team all season, as it is 27-14 in all Devils games on the year. Furthermore, the Under is a scorching 21-9-8 in their last 38 games overall. Yes, this is a low total, but New Jersey home games are averaging a combined 4.83 goals this season, and the last three head-to-head meetings between these teams all went Under with none of those games exceeding five goals.

Now, the Penguins are better known for their offense, but the Under is 7-2 in their last nine games overall. The have been getting great goaltending from Ty Conklin, who is the probable starter tonight. Conklin is 10-2-2 with a nice 1.97 GAA and a .941 save percentage.

We look for another defensive struggle tonight with both goalies and defenses controlling the action.

Penguins, Devils Under 5 (+100)

Samford @ Murray State u120.5 (-110)
Tue Jan 29 '08 8:00p
This game between the Samford Bulldogs and the Murray State Racers features two stark contrasts in styles.

The Under is an amazing 13-3 in all Samford games this season, with a very low average combined total scored in their games of just 116.6 points. The Bulldogs average just 54.9 points offensively, but their shooting percentage of 44.6 percent is not the worst in the world, which means that their low output is a direct result of the deliberate style. Furthermore, their road games have been even lower scoring, with an average combined total score of 114.9 points per contest.

Now Murray State plays much more up-tempo, as their games are averaging 143.0 points. However, we could see them getting frustrated by Samford?s style, even in their own building. At least that has been the case in the past, as the last five head-to-head meetings between these schools here in Murray State have averaged just a combined 115.2 points.

We look for history to repeat tonight.

Samford, Murray State Under 120.5

Minnesota Timberwolves +4.5 (-110)
Tue Jan 29 '08 8:35p

Don?t look now, but the Timberwolves are currently one of the hottest teams in the league. That?s right folks!!! If not for a turnover in the closing seconds of their game against Boston, Minny would own a 4-game winning streak coming into tonight?s contest with the (17-26) Chicago Bulls. Minny?s torrid play began last Monday when they went into Golden State and pulled out a 109-108 shocker that saw them win SU as 11.5-point road underdogs. They followed that effort up with an even more unbelievable handling of the Phoenix Suns. They beat Nash and company 117-107 as 8.5-point home pups for their second win over the Phoenix franchise this season just 5-days after getting bludgeoned 115-95 in the desert. Then came the tough 1-point loss at Boston that saw them easily cover the 14-point spread. Their next game saw them open up as favorites for just the 4th time this season. However, the betting public didn?t believe the Wolves would be able to rebound from their loss in Boston forcing all the sportsbooks to move the line in favor of New Jersey. When the dust cleared, the Wolves picked up their 8th win of the season when they upended the Nets by a 98-95 final count and covered the 1.5-point spread in the process.

As for the Bulls, they?ve continued their mediocre play since the coaching change and they?re now suffering from a rash of injuries to their star players. Both Luol Deng and Ben Gordon sat out of their last game against Phoenix that saw the Suns cover the 7.5-point spread in their 88-77 defeat of the Bulls. The loss was the Bulls 2nd in a row and 6th in their L/10 overall games. The United Center was a very tough place for opposing teams to go into and win the L/3 seasons, but that hasn?t been the case this year. The Bulls are 9-13 SU at home and they?ve only managed to cover 7 of those 22 games.

Minnesota has experienced decent success against the Bulls winning 7 of their L/10 match-ups, but a guy named Kevin Garnett had a lot to do with those victories. This will be the first meeting of these teams this season.

The Bulls opened up as 2.5-point home chalks with the ?Total? set at 188. Overnight bettors still don?t believe in the Wolves current form and have bet the Bulls up to 4.5-point favorites. They also project a lower scoring game with the ?Total? dropping to its current mark of 187.

This series has been dominated by the underdog of late as it?s cashed in 6 of the L/8 meetings. The Timberwolves are a combined 23-16 (59%) ATS on the road vs. sub .500 Eastern Conference opponents, while the Bulls come in a combined 12-30 (29%) ATS at home vs. sub .500 Western Conference opponents.
