The Shawshank Redemption will probably be in a new list. Amazon readers have a list, last time i checked (month ago) Shawshank Redemption was the top movie out of 250. Not number 1, but a good show.

the list is faulty simply because there is hardly any old films (older than 20 years).

I have never seen One flew over the Cuckoos nest, plan on changing that this week.

also like sting. I believe they put in Butch Cassidy film in but both films have the same stars. so they put one film in leave the other out.

godfather is the only sequel that made it, it was a good film.

my list for top Canadian films 25 so far as seven (great) films. hopefully have a proper list in a month.

Quiz show is also a good show that never made it.

I like Platoon but cannot stand most of Oliver Stones other films, JFK distorted the truth so much, and was shocking in the garbage that they passed off as facts.

also wish they would stock more of these films at the video stores. went to a Blockbuster and could rent 40 copies of Wild wild west, but no Bridge on the River Kwai???

thanks

Thank YOU for posting the lists. You will LOVE Cuckoo's Nest. You're right about the average video stores lack of a good portion of these fine flicks, bummer, and yeah The Sting was great! forgot about that one

thanks for everyones input,
Phanatic the reason we see so many new releases and so few old copies, are the sales.

I know someone who own a large video/hobby store owner, 70% of all rentals are new videos 3 months old (max). At large chain stores this can be as much as 85-90% per store.

this has a lot to do with the hype, but for store who want to increase profits they should promote the older films, maybe a free pop or popcorn if you rent 2-3 old films.

have better displays, especially when a film get re-released, they just did that to most WB movies.

if not this is dead inventory, also they already own the movie, many new shows do not rent well and they never recoup the price for the tape.

by the way I read that a movie company would consider a 6-7% return a good return on a movie. Scary when you think that these films are now costing between 90-150 million to make not counting the marketing budget (some spend more on marketing than on the movie) that you would be happy with a 6% return. however when a film bombs (50-75 million loss) top execs can lose their jobs.

thanks

thought I would post a top 25 Canadian film list (my own films) most have won Genie (annual film awards). went to 3 shows in the last 2 weeks, often do not see one a month. anyways free magazine had some peoples picks.

some of these films I have not seen, in Canada there is ussually a small corner section with the words Canadian films (blockbuster, Rogers video) beside International films. Less money and less to market the films hurts the industry. most of these films i would put up against anything.,well....

could only come up with 16 films, however will look for more: no particular order:

1.32 Short films about Glen Gould (1993)= "If orginality, a compelling story, sophisticated writing and fine acting are any indication of a great film, this is a great film. mysterious life of Canada's greatest pianist." Great film.

2. The Sweet Hereafter (1997)= "The subject matter- a bus accident that kills most of the children in a small village, heartache, incest-reads like a litany of horrors, but the film is filled with redemption, light and wonder." peter mansbridge news anchor.
I agree good film, uplifting??

3.porkys= made money, a lot of money.

4.Exotica (1994)=Atom Egoyan picture; man goes into a strip club and falls in love with a particular dancer.

5. The Changeling= scary flick (never saw it)

6.Jesus of Montreal (1990)- actor plays christ and gets caught in the role, great film, hate subtitles and my french is only getting worse.

7. Le declin de L'empire Amercain(1987)- decline and fall of the american empire, couples go to the cabin and talk about sex and relationships.

8. The Five Senses(1999)- saw only clips of this show, will pester Blockbuster to bring it in, about WW1 docter, if the clips are anything like the show, this film is great.

9. The Terry Fox Story(1984)- in Canada we do not have many heros, we cut them down quickly, here is Canadian hero. ran over 23 miles every day for months, on one leg (and a fake one) died of Cancer. Statue is outside of the lakehead over Lake Superior, it is something special.

10. Meatballs-starred young Bill Murray, made a lot of money, shot in Northwestern ontario.

11.the Red Violin(1998)- a great film according to a friend, about the adventures a violin through the centuries.

12.Dead Ringers(David Cronberg) (1989)-twin docters, one date a women, and cannot make it for one night the other one fills in, scary and wierd.

13. Margaret's Mueseum(1995)- about mining in Nova scotia, great ending.

14. Les Boys(1997)bunch of losers form a hockey team. (never saw it)

15.Hanging Garden (1997)- a very wierd show, main character kills himself before the film starts, dark, but with hope in the end. people I know either love it or hate it.

16.hard core logo(1996) about a band reuniting for one last tour, never saw it, mixed reviews.

Most of these films will get a repsonse out of you, which is better than most hollywood films.

thanks

I damn sure hate to admit this, but from your top #10 I've seen only 3.

However, I would have to certainly put Shawshank Redemption. If you haven't had the pleasure, get your ass up to Blockbuster stat! It's a classic and have probably seen it over 5 times....And man, that Rocky V was sumthin' else as well...

Neemer - After my top 5, there is a big drop off. While the other 5 are excellent movies, I've seen each of those top 5 at least 20 times.

To answer your question, NO, I have not seen Shawshank Redemption (although i have wanted to for a long time). I'll tell ya what, let's make a deal: I'm going to Blockbuster in about an hour to rent Shawshank. In return, pick out one of the movies in my top 5 that you haven't seen. AND, if you haven't seen either Reservoir Dogs or Midnight Express.....get em both. Midnight Express, I am almost certain you will like. Has a prison theme to it. As far as Reservoir Dogs goes, if you saw Pulp Fiction and liked it (and liked Quentin Tarentino's directional style), you will certainly enjoy Reservoir Dogs. IMO, it's even better.

Selkirk- I've seen both of Egoyan's pictures (Exotica and the Sweet Hereafter), and thought both were brilliant.

The Godfather has to be in the Top 10 and in IMO, Part II should be in there as well.

Haven't made a list yet, but one movie I believe that has been overlooked is L.A. Confidential. Really enjoyed that movie.

As for the more recent releases, if you haven't seen Frequency yet (is on PPV right now), I highly recommend it!
