Just got done watching Shawshank about 15 minutes ago. Absolutely outstanding flick. I recall reading that a long time ago. It was a novella or short story with the title "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemtion".....Screenplay must have been different cuz I don't recall much of it at all. Agree with you about King's adaptions to the screen, although The Dead Zone with Christopher Walken was a decent watch. Trying to find a place for it in my top ten........let's see, my top 7 are pretty much set in stone. So, I will stick it at #8 (right after Easy Rider and ahead of Goodfellas)...which knocks Goodbye Girl out of the top ten........

Hell, I've got some time, might as well expand my list to 20.....Here goes.

01 - Reservoir Dogs
02 - Midnight Express
03 - One flew over the coocoo's nest
04 - Pulp Fiction
05 - Taxi Driver
06 - The Godfather
07 - Easy Rider
08 - Shawshank Redemption
09 - Goodfellas
10 - ButchCassidy and the Sundance Kid
11 - The Goodbye Girl
12 - Rocky
13 - Animal House
14 - Saturday Night Fever
15 - Raging Bull
16 - When Harry Met Sally
17 - Chinatown
18 - American Graffiti
19 - Heaven Can Wait
20 - Planet of the Apes

Best movies nobody has heard of.........

01 - Buffalo '66
02 - The Chinese Box
03 - Temptress Moon
04 - Trainspotting
05 - Lolita

the 1985 film Stand By Me was based on a king novel (short stories -Four Seasons), I liked it, believe it won some awards.

The Apt Pupil is a recent film that got mixed reviews never saw it.
Running Man starred Arnie is based on a Short story from King. Was his best story, book was far better than the movie.

thanks

Their top 10 looks pretty solid and in agreement with this thread. I was let down with "Saving Private Ryan" though, seemed so implausible to me, and that's all it took.

Killer thread! I gotta get over here more often. Anyway, here are some great flicks that you maybe ain't seen. Well, maybe great ain't the right word, but they're pretty freakin' cool.

American Beauty ~ It won Best Picture? Unreal! I can't believe the academy got it!

Being John Malkovich ~ Outrageous! You never know where it's going.

The Big Lebowski ~ I loved it, but I loved Fargo, too, so there ya go.

City of Lost Children ~ Subtitles, but not that many. The visuals will blow you away! I can't tell you how cool this movie is. Somebody please check it out.

Dead Man ~ Johnny Depp on mescaline in the old west with an Indian named Nobody. Jim Jarmusch directs.

Dead Alive ~ Mom gets bit by a weird bat and Junior has to take care of her. Funny, but man that's a lotta blood.

Doctor Strangelove ~ A great movie by a great director. Stars Peter Sellers any many others.

Donnie Brasco ~ More Depp, this time with Al Pacino. A realistic look at the "Family" business.

Eraserhead ~ David Lynch at his most bizarre. You'll say you hate it, but you won't be able to stop watching.

Fight Club ~ Not great, but a recent flick that was strange enough for me to enjoy it.

Hard Eight ~ I'll call this the gambling version of Buffalo 66, although I ain't sure why.

House of Games ~ David Mamet directs a killer story on con artists plying their trade. Tons of cool cons you can pull on your friends. A must see!

Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels ~ Horrible title, but a very cool flick.

Magnolia ~ I've only seen it once, but this movie floored me. I thought it was the bomb! Tom Cruise does his best work ... by far!

Once Upon a Time in America ~ Robert De Niro and James Woods as Noodles and Max. Awesome!

The Spanish Prisoner ~ A killer flick that got no publicity. Lotsa plot twists and Steve Martin, too!

That's all for now. I had to either make this list, or a list of great "old" movies, because you guys had all the good ones already! I'm serious, though, check these out. Like, moo.

Okay a lot of great movies have been mentioned but what about the following;

1) Boiler Room. Great movie especially if you invest in the market and have been solicited on the phone. Of course go check at Wall Street with Michael Douglass while you are at it.

2) Dusk Til Dawn. George Clooney and Selma Hayek. Not to mention two movies in one.

Great input.

"You talkin' to me? You talkin' to me? Well, I'm the only one standin' here....you talkin' to me?".....Also, did you catch who played the pimp? Harvey Keitel. Didn't realize that until about the 4th time i saw it.

Cow -

You mean there is actually somebody else that has seen Buffalo '66? I mistakingly watched that movie one evening while flippin' channels. Missed the first 10 minutes of it, but have since watched it in it's entirety. I was completely unprepared for how good that movie was.....Quite an odd flick. Either love it or hate it....Personally, I thought it was a masterpiece. Also loved Eraserhead.

Also, mark me down as one who did not enjoy Boiler Room. Didn't really care for Wall Street either. Loved Donnie Brasco.....anything with Al Pacino is worth a watch....Dog Day Afternoon and Serpico were both outstanding flicks.

I don't think that anyone has mentioned "Field of Dreams" yet. This is one of my top 10 movies of all time. Almost brings me to tears everytime I see Costner and Shoeless Joe play catch. Another great one is Apocalypse Now.

For reasons I'm not sure of, he hasn't been heard from since.

Read where Mr. Davis had passed away a few years back. Not certain of the validity of the statement, but if true it sure is unfortunate. I agree JR, it was a remarkable performance...

Usual Suspects was a great film, loved the ending, I was onto the secret until they throw you the curve at the end. one of the best endings ever for a show.

Field of Dreams was also a good film.

Some recent shows I saw: (ussually see one a month but saw many more last two months.)

Scary movie: dumb humour but I liked it, does not take itself serious, spoofs horror movies. Made more than Patriot and probably will make more than The perfect storm, small budget made lots of $$$ and yes a sequel is coming

MI 2 = lots of action, however no plot, I mean not even a shadow of a plot, just bad.

X-Men= actually one of the better superhero movies made (do know if that is saying much), I liked it.

Perfect Storm= good film, good to see it on the big screen, slow at first but worth the wait.

The Patriot= never saw it but in history Mel character was a brutal slave owner, and they made up the "evil brit". so I will pass

U-571= ? hope I got the title correct, good sub movie, some people believe the ending is phony (when the sub surfaces and storms the ship)however consider how they sank the Bizmark that was a lucky shot.
However British navy was the main force behind unlocking the code not the US navy (though they helped near the end), it is for American audiences so you need US heros.

Gladiator= for action it was good, acting not bad and the film looked like ancient rome, but I hated the film, i know it is not supposed to follow any particular part of roman history, however it is so inaccurate you could drive a truck through this show;
-star wars ending, never would have happened
-nobles never talked to the gladiators
-he seems to get from germany to italy very quickly since after fight is on tired horses and looks to be hurt.
-the royal family never believed in a repbulic.
-you can see women (besides the royal family) not dressed in white watching the games, in the lower levels.

thanks

Neemer -

I did some research and was startled to find that you are absolutely right. Brad Davis (very ironically) developed a heroin addiction and died of AIDS in 1991 as a result of intraveinous drug use. His wife wrote a book about him entitled: "After Midnight: The Life and Death of Brad Davis."

Review of movie I found (Chicago Tibune):***** stars out of ***** This is one of the greatest biographies to ever be portrayed on film. It is about a man named Billy Hayes, an american who tried to smuggle hashish out of Turkey and winds up in a torturious prison for 4 years. Once they are served, he finds out he gets 30 years when he eventually reaches madness. Brad Davis' performance is simply the best and deserved an Oscar award for it. He was a 'natural' actor who convinces us with what Billy Hayes actually went through. Although drug smuggling is wrong and should be punished, Billy Hayes, in the movie, accepted this, as portrayed in his speech in front of the judges. But having been in such an inhumane brutal penal system for more than 3 years was enough punishment, 30 years would mean death. Overall, it's one of the most touching movies I have ever seen. Brad Davis' performance is one of the finest acting I have seen, sometimes even better than Oscar nominated and awarded actors.

Neemer,

I don't know your background but I guess for me I unfortunately had the opportunity to work in a couple of different boiler rooms and maybe I was able to relate to some of the chit they were throwing.

Just saw Boiler Room. Just an OK flick I thought. Two and a half stars (out of five). Kind of a Wall Street/rap/Fight Club thing set in NYC.

Laughed pretty hard at the scene where the five brokers are drinking in a booth at a swanky restaurant. They are getting loud and there's a booth with these gay guys next to them. The gay dudes ask them to tone it down some and the boisterous broker says, "You know what they ought to do? They ought to take all you guys and put you on an island somewhere!"

Gay dude says, "You're on it."
