great thread!

how does life of brian make the top 30 and the holy grail not show up at all?

selkirk - i have to rate meatballs #1 on the canadian movie list.

most folks have mentioned my favs

scary movies that rank w/the shining = the exorcist and halloween.

i didn't see caddyshack mentioned(maybe the funniest movies of all time)

other funny movies(and favorites):

animal house
fletch
groundhog day
uncle buck(and just about anything w/john candy)
slapshot
hollywood knights
let it ride(no horseplayer should miss it)

funny/good movies:

16 candles(and most other john hughes flicks)
the sure thing
breaking away
flamingo kid
gotcha

heat didn't make anyone's list. while it may not be my favorite, i think it is a good flick.

offbeat but entertaining:

star 80
pope of greenwich village
body double
tapeheads

others:
12 angry men
any old clint flicks
old bond(connery)
parenthood
grand canyon

there are a bunch of flicks already mentioned that i love and i am sure even more that i can't think of right now.

i recently rented mystery, alaska and found it to be worth the rental.

jr44 - it was good to get the goodbye girl out of that top 10, it just didn't fit with the other 9

If you haven't seen "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", go do yourself a favor and run out to the local theatre when you have 3 hours to spare. Breathtaking is the one word that comes to mind. Probably won't get nominated for Best Picture, but undoubtedly the best movie I saw over the past year and it will be a crime if Ang Lee doesn't win Best Director.

saw it Hoops and agree it should be nominated. I think it will be. would surprise me if is left off. hope it gets a wide release.

still trying to track down a Canadian film "The Five Senses" (1999). near me is only large chain videostores(Rogers, blockbuster) so I have little hope there.

thanks

Thanks for bringing this topic back-- I never got around to posting some of my favorites. I worked in a video store during college-- saw lots of things I normally wouldn't have seen. We also had a "art house" movie theater in town, too. Saw many interesting films from around the world there.
Will post my list soon
smile.gif

Just reviewed the lists of everyone who has posted their favs so far-- and almost all of mine have been mentioned in one thread or another. So, a few I did see mentioned that I like.

Pink Flamingos-- John Waters at his best. The ending will gross you out, guaranteed.
The Thief, The Cook, His Wife and Her Lover-- the same goes for this bizarre film.
Erin Brokovich-- I never knew Julia Roberts could act.
Traffic-- should win the Academy Award this spring, but probably won't.

These have been mentioned before, but are some of my all-time favorites.

Some Like it Hot
The Hustler
Hud
Cool Hand Luke
Rebel Without a Cause
On the Waterfront
Newer ones now....

Easy Rider
Trainspotting
Barfly
Goodfellas
The Hustler
Reservior Dogs
Pulp Fiction
Usual Suspects-- anything with Kevin Spacy ROCKS!
This is Spinal Tap
Animal House
Stripes
Chinatown
Eating Raoul
American Beauty-- Spacy again
Wall Street

and many, many more I can't think of right now....

Fun thread. There are so many great films it is kinda silly to say one is better than another. It becomes rather subjective. As for "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon." I have not seen it but have seen the trailers. One thing that keeps me from seeing it is the stunts I see of people flying thru the air. I am a big martial arts fan but to see acts that are totally unrealistic would ruin everything. Moving on, might as well indulge and give my own list. Comedies: Airplane, Blazzing Saddles, Naked Gun 1, Let it Ride (Funnier of course to a gambler/horseplayer), White Men Can't Jump and a odd one Big Lebowski. War: Apocalypse Now, A Bridge Too Far, Patton, Breaker Morant, Light Horseman (Another Aussie film) and Platoon. Suspense/Drama: Casino, No Way Out, Heat, Thunderheart, Insider, Bullitt, To Live and Die in LA, Silence of the Lambs, Pulp Fiction, Fargo and many others. Hard to remember them all. Lastly, many great foreign films but hard for me to remember the names. Some people just can't watch something with subtitles but not a problem with me.

Redsfann, did you prefer the director's cut of Blade Runner (Without Ford's talking) or the regular version? Kinda prefer the director's cut since it allows the possibility of Ford's character being a replicant. More somber mood also. Couple of other drama/suspense movies that come to mind is Witness and Cape Fear. GL...

Here's a sleeper I just rented that hasn't been mentioned, much to my amazement. I thoroughly enjoyed it - here's a review I borrowed...

True Romance

"Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
It was directed with energetic skill by Top Gun Tony Scott, but this breathtaking 1993 thriller (think of it as an adolescent crime fantasy on steroids) has Quentin Tarantino written all over it. True Romance is really part of a loose trilogy that includes Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, with a crackling Tarantino screenplay that rides a fine line between raucous comedy and violent excess. Christian Slater plays Clarence, the comic-book lover who meets a beguiling prostitute named Alabama (Patricia Arquette), confronts her vicious pimp (Gary Oldman), and embarks on a cross-country odyssey with $5 million worth of Mafia cocaine. Mayhem ensues, culminating in a favorite Tarantino climax--the "Mexican standoff"--in which a roomful of guys are pointing guns at each other, waiting to see who shoots first. Brutal, profane, and totally outrageous, True Romance is not for everyone, but with a supporting cast that includes Dennis Hopper, Christopher Walken, Brad Pitt, and Val Kilmer (as the ghost of Elvis!), you can be sure this movie will never be boring. --Jeff Shannon"

PS - The original "directors cut" is much preferred to the "R" rated version. And I'm told Blockbuster doesn't carry either. I found it at the local corner video.

Enjoy

I liked True Romance but you are correct it is a very violent show. I saw the movie when it first came to theatres and later rented the Directors cut. The show I saw in the theatre was much more violent as they cut out scences in the directors cut.

the fight scence in the hotel room between the (female lead) and the guy (been a while) anyways there are scences cut out near the end. was much more brutal in the theatre. I guess that cut is gone forever.

enjoyed the film but hated the "Disney" ending, when both of them live. no one should of gotten out of the hotel alive, also he is bleeding how does he get past the police, ect...... should have died. other than that loved the film. The cut in the theatre was the best though.

thanks
