Charles Howell(40/1) e.w.
- - The players are about the only ones more than me that perceive every footstep taken from January (and even from August) as a prelude to their next chance come Augusta in the springtime. Lots of plaster casts of those footprints over the decades at this end, and I have no intention of ignoring what this man has shown me. I'll concede the venue is not ideally suited to the monotone cadence of his best form, but his heart can overcome that . . . Looks to be participating at some meaningful level on Sunday afternoon, and if so, will be bringing more than a cap gun to the proceedings.
Aaron Baddeley(125/1) e.w.
- - A procession of backers for a big outsider is not a good thing - but this one is based on plenty of pieces so I won't be coming to grief over my choice as some sort of crap foolishness. (And it's the only substantial play I've gotten in all year at the familiar terms of 1/4 for Top 5 - a surprise development for this event at SIA.) A pairing with Tiger is never a neutral capping circumstance, and on very rare occasions can be a nicely timed bump and thrust into the milieu of the business end of a championship, and I was not surprised to look back and see a good effort from Badds (7th) when paired with Tiger for the first 3 rounds last September in Boston . . . The kid never did pay much attention to what he was supposed to do when the heat was turned up.
Geoff Ogilvy(40/1)
- - I heard the term Ogilvyaholic - I like that - I've been something of a charter member.
Henrik Stenson(33/1) e.w.
Sergio Garcia(33/1) e.w.
Padraig Harrington(40/1) e.w.
- - Can there be anything sadder about TheGolfChannel's outstanding coverage of the major championships than watching Ken Schofield, Executive Director of the European Tour, after having been interviewed while standing on eggshells with fingers and toes crossed on Saturday nights as THE ever hopeful face of a European breakthrough moment, and then his having to come back on Sunday night amidst the ashes time after time after time? That poor bloke deserves better, and this is a really fine chance for some overdue joy before the Carnoustie anniversary . . . Stenson has some of the Mike Weir('03) of Howell and Baddeley about him, and his underrated short game now sparkles, but I'm fearful he's already accomplished a bit too much and some disappointment will soon be dealt in his direction, even if he gets off to a great start here . . . Top 5 in 4 of the last 8 majors is what I remember about Garcia, and it's not close to crushing him yet, and I'm not spitting on his chances here - and now . . . And Padraig made the card while I was looking for someone in the field that might have the right stuff but was somehow and someway just not appearing on the prevalent radar screens, and as it is he rounds out nicely my contingent of richly experienced and personally disappointed European Ryder Cuppers from whom I'm EXPECTING a commendable championship.
For first round leader, the odds are slashed (for me) on Vaughn Taylor, and Mike Weir seems to lack some substance without an e.w. option; maybe Cabrera . . . Jerry Kelly at 140/1 for Top 5 seems massive enough, but "flatters to deceive" at best.
