I was visiting my relatives in the small town of Ponca City, Oklahoma a couple of years ago, and I saw that there was a wrestling show scheduled while I was there. I figured it was just some small local show, but being the wrestling fan that I was, I decided to check it out. It turned out to be a league promoted by Jake " The Snake" Roberts. For being such a small show, only a few hundred tickets sold, he really brought in some good talent. The Rock and Roll Express, Cowboy Bob Orton, Greg "The Hammer" Valentine, Doink The Clown, The Bushwackers (one of my personal favorites). There was 2 Main Events, the 1st one was Jake "The Snake" vs The Honky Tonk Man. The 2nd one was 2 of the biggest wrestlers I have ever seen, King Kong Bundy vs King Mabel. Anybody remember King Mabel? Bundy was over 500#, and Mabel was bigger than Bundy. You should have seen that ring move when those guys got in and started bouncing around.
The reason I mention this is because a lot of those former wrestling stars still like to do the small local shows, and it is a great place to meet them. The small shows are also very fan friendly, as the wrestlers come out during the intermissions and talk with the fans, sign autographs, pose for pictures, etc.
I'm don't know If Jake "The Snake" still promotes, ( he was based somewhere in Texas at that time), but if he does, it is a show well worth seeing. I know Ken Patera still runs shows in Minnesota and Wisconsin. He and I have worked together quite a bit. Buck "Rock & Roll" Zumhoff also puts on shows in the area, although he uses mostly unknown local wrestlers. A friend of mine, Jumpin' Jim Brunzell, used to wrestle in Patera's shows, but he decided to retire recently. He told me once he turned 50, the old body doesn't take the bumps like it used to.
