Weekend picks so far

Weekend picks so far

Odd weekend, and I'm not sure the bookmakers knew what to make of some of these fights... Late lines and numbers all over the place.

I'm backing 4 guys, some straight up and with different combinations of parlays. I'll list them them from strongest pick first:

-Humberto Soto I don't think this fight will be very close, and I was pleased to see initial odds. We know what Diaz is. He will give it the old tough-guy try, but it will not be enough against the skill of Soto

-Alfonso Gomez Castillo has gotten himself reasonably together with a few fights against Mexican veterans. I think he will put in a good try, but he will find Gomez too big, strong, and young. 147 just too big for the former great. Gomez no world-beater, but I think he's got enough here.

-Sam Peter Peter appears to be giving it another serious go, and I don't think Nagy is the guy to derail him. Nagy's win against ridiculously shot Maskaev doesn't mean much, and other than that he hasn't beaten anyone. (Imagine if Maskaev had gotten a shot at Vitali.) Nagy may have some potential, but this fight comes a few too soon for him.

-Paul Smith Smith a slightly higher class here. He will not have it all his own way, but he should find the means to grind himself out a win.

I've got some more going, but am still waiting for the o/u's to appear on 5D. I also haven't gotten into the Pacquiao-Clottey fight yet... There are some prop bets that I am finding interesting, but am still thinking some things over.

more to come...let's get'em boys!!

What do you guys think of Clottey +26.5 points on 5d?

I guess it is so high because Pac is crushing everything in his path.

Hi Ghost, i think the reason why it is do high is that all people that wanted to Play Pac by Ko (and spent some time analysing the odds) got at the beginning +105 on Pac -26.5(or by Ko) that was higher then the normal Ko line of -115 + it covers a very clear points Win of Pac ;-)

Cheers

Quotes from Gomez

Quotes from Gomez

-Alfonso Gomez Castillo has gotten himself reasonably together with a few fights against Mexican veterans. I think he will put in a good try, but he will find Gomez too big, strong, and young. 147 just too big for the former great. Gomez no world-beater, but I think he's got enough here.

These are some quotes from Gomez and some reasons besides his physical advantages of being bigger, taller, and younger.

In his biggest win yet, Gomez finished off 2009 in blazing fashion when he scored one of the biggest upsets of the year by defeating No. 1 Contender Jesus Soto Karass on the Pacquiao-Cotto card.

?No one expected me to beat Soto Karass,? says Gomez. ?They thought I was a tune-up. They expected me to lose in a Mexican war ? but I used lateral movement, I used my jab to win.

?Beating him was so important, but I counted on that upset. I knew it would get me another big, another important fight.?

?But you can?t count out Castillo?s experience. I?ve seen him fight many times ? I?ve seen the Castillo that fought Diego Corrales and Floyd Mayweather. I?ve also seen the Castillo who fought Sebastian Lujan.

?I?m counting on fighting the version that fought Corrales. And I?m ready for that one. It?s very important not to lose ? a win will bring me one step closer to a world title shot. A win will show the world that I?m ready to fight the elite fighters.?

Gomez? career, it seems, has been made up of fights he?s hoped will prove his quality.

?I got a stigma from fighting on ?The Contender? reality show,? admits Gomez. ?Since then, I showed that I went from a TV contender to a real contender.

?Now I want to prove that I?m an elite fighter by winning a title.?

Unlike the fight camp in 2007, when he lost to Cotto, the current operation in Oxnard, Calif., has been injury-free, says Gomez.

?There?s been no health issues. It?s been a smooth ride, this camp.?

What?s also changed with Gomez?s career, is his outlook. Instead of fighting merely for fun, the prizefight business has become a serious job.

?It?s still fun, but I?m taking things much more seriously,? says Gomez. ?I?m a husband and father to a six-month-old daughter, so I?m much more responsible now.?

In my opinion, having a child is significant for Gomez. He knows what he is fighting for now.

Good Luck guys!

for me..this is a primo post...picks...a short anaysis ...what more can you ask?....it`s like a mini-graham column....even if the picks are wrong, you see what the rationale is and if it doesn`t make sense, then you can disregard it,make a counter point or request clarification...you know where quanah is coming from.....

you` and matt are doing a kick-ass job on here...along with g.k.,romi,punchy,old diry,andrey,brainiac,l.o.l.,zerwas.....and thongie( ;))....and others..

even when i come into the boxing thread with little opinion on the weekend`s action,i can find something that pique`s my interest...as i write this i`m cobbling a parlay together based on everyone`s input...

i don`t take the time like i used to,so,every now and then just want to make it known that everyone`s collective time and effort is appreciated....i`ve been fooling with boxing in this forum for around 8 years and imo,it`s never been better...

well done...and thanks

Hey, thanks GW...really. You're comments are much appreciated, as our your capping opinions. I know you speak from alot of experience, and you are a damn good - intuitive capper. You also have a knack for comic interventions at precisely the right moment. This forum would not be the same without ya...

Since I'm kissin' some ass here, I'm also gonna give a shout out to the forum MVP - Ghost Kid. Your article links and photos are obviousley the backbone of the forum.

More picks...

More picks...

Hernandez-Crenz UNDER 9.5 (-165) - medium
Crenz has never been past 8. Hernandez has a glass jaw. Something will give. I think it will be Crenz, but at +850 it's probably worth a slight that he will catch Hernandez. The dude is 6-5 and could be awkward for the Cuban. Graham said Crenz has a 'hit or be hit' style. I think this is exactly right.

Huck-Richards UNDER 8.5 (-175) - medium
You gotta like the swamp donkey's attitude going in. Now there's some bad blood, which should help the under cause. The donkey will take his aggressive shot at the title, then he will gas. Maybe lightning strikes and he catch Huck. Either way, I don't think this fight sees the ninth.

Good luck madmen!!

-I'll probably go on some Pacquiao-Clottey prop bets a little later on.

Maybe the Swamp Donkey did it?? Dude is really gettin' under Huck's skin.

I'm puttin' a fin on the donkey...citing reasons of 'bizarre circumstances' and having a great nickname.
