Generally, I think he means that Michigan won't hire a coach with an NCAA violations file (Tressel) or a strength/speed coach that was kicked out of track and field for steroid use (Butch Reynolds).

Most OSU fans probably dont know who Reynolds is....if he's not a LB or something, he's off their radar.

Any idea what the Schiano timeline is?

I think the majority of OSU fans know who Reynolds is and know his history........

So Michigan doesn't want to compromise its standards or do anything unethical? Gees, amazing how quick they've swept the Fab Five under the rug, huh?

Fab Five, what sport did they play? There's no record of them in any of Michigan's teams programs! You are making stuff up. :142smilie

All i said was most OSU fans would not know Reynolds....the ones I know, dont and would not know anybody unless he played football....thats not much different than any other common fan base....I consider most of the folks who post and/or lurk around these parts to be way more knowledgeable, so I was hardly talking about the osu guys that post here...trust me, its college athletics....i have no delusions that my teams, either Michgan or my alma mater IU, does every thing above board.

We can go all day comparing "transgressions."

I understand your points Prophet, and I agree. I just think it was a low blow to include something like that in his letter--indicating that Michigan is holier than thou, when they are far from it.....

Deezle, if OSU is not the filthiest program in the Big Ten, they are second to Illinois. I am not speculating, or speaking as a fan here. It's a fact to those connected, and not just UM people. Juice/HGH, cash, cars, grades, etc. All colllege football factories have their transressions, but OSU runs a very loose ship by Big Ten standards. I am not using this as an excuse for the losses to Tressel, Michigan has done plenty of winning versus dirty programs in the past. I hope the new coach can do so in the future.

And on UM basketball in the early to mid 90's. Yep, dirty as all get out. Almost as bad as Memphis these days. But guess what? That's not going to stop me from calling a spade a spade now. OSU sold their soul when they dumped all that money into facilities. Gotta pay the bills, and winning like they are sure does that.

Back to potential UM coaches, it appears Schiano is leaning towards accepting the offer. We'll see, I'm still thinkinh that he wants to stay at Rutgers and is using the UM offer to get a raise. We'll see soon enough. If it's not announced by Sunday it's pretty safe to assume it's dead. I'd actually be surprised if something doesn't come out tomorrow, one way or another.

Uh oh, ESPN just reported that Bill Martin met with Schiano at the meetings in NYC and speculated that an offer could occur...

There goes another candidate...fortunately it wasn't Herbstriet reporting.

An offer did occur. Sounds like he is (or is going to) turn it down on the promise that the governor will raise money for a new stadium at Rutgers.

Cwood, sorry, but as someone who has worked in the athletic dept. and the football program, I think your accusations are way off base.....

As you said, I think it is impossible for any major athletic program to be completely clean--especially with boosters and some of the thugs that get recruited. But a lot of that is beyond the coach's or AD's control--there are just too many people that want to have a hand in things.

I have always respected Michigan--the school, the athletic program, the fans--and I have always rooted for them to do well. But this display of arrogance sure leaves a bitter taste.

Just when people were getting excited about Schiano......does UM still have a shot here.....and, or course, the obvious question is where does Michigan go from here.

Sean Payton? Is that legit?

I hope He turns Mich down... Let's see a coach show some loyalty to his program, the same kind of loyalty that they demand from their players & supporters. I know most of these guys have to get what they can get because this is a cut throat business but Rutgers has given him everything He has asked for. Nothing wrong with using Mich to negotiate a better deal. He's a Jersey boy and is building what could be a Mich like program.. Where has the mentality of building something great from the ground up gone? Everyone in sports these days, wants to go to a winner; why not be the winner. I would be shocked if he goes anywhere... He owns Jersey, he could not live a better life, a life that he knows, any where else in America. Be The Man Jersey boy, stay at Rutgers and become the next Bo/Joepa right in your own back yard. What's he in it for: money, fame and glory ? He will never be loved in Mich, the way they love in in Jersey... If he stays the course and brings to Rutgers what he has envisioned and promised, Greg Schiano will go down as a god, one of the all time Jersey boys. I'm a big fan of BO, Woody and Joepa..... If Schiano wants that kind of status he wont get it at Mich.. I think he is a big picture kind of guy, a maverick. I bet he stays a Rutgers........ He's making $2,000,000 + @ Rutgers and never has to pay for anything. The Only thing he should do @ Mich is go in there and get a win for Rutgers in the big house. He doesn't need Mich.

I understand what Bryanz is saying....he bascially builf this from ground zero. It is HIS program. I think he's missing a great opportunity at Michigan, but he wants to finish what he started at Rutgers....so i can not blame him.

I have zero clue in which direction UM is going to go now. Lot of rumors about NFL types like Shanahan and Peyton, but that does not blow me away for some reason.

Just no promoting from within, but right now the school has a mutiny on its hands w/ fans, alums and donors......the pessimist in me feels this might get worse before it gets better.

Bingo on Schiano. He wants the Penn State job badly.

By the way, Miles' agent and Michigan are talking again, and pretty seriously at this point.

You're just going to rile up the masses with that one.....hope its true, not so much because I want Les, but I am tired of my whiny UM brethern who think the sky is falling w/o Les the Lombardi re-incarnate.....the fan base has not moved on from him.

Mich needs Jerry Moore, yes he is old but, he is a football coach, a winner.... bring Jerry in for 5 yrs with a great young DC & OC and turn the program over to one of them . Mich doesn't need star power... They need to make this thing about Mich and not about some coach & money.... They need a new AD Also, who ever this guy is, he doesn't have a plan...This AD has reacted every step of the way. When you have a position of power you have to be proactive. If he knew Carr was out, why didn't he have a plan ? Why put your self in a position that you don't have a answer to ? The President of this University needs to make a bold move and bring in a new Ad. Mich can't afford to make their next coach a loser that they have to flip in the next 5 yrs.

Michigan buyout in Miles contract

Posted: Friday December 07, 2007 06:22AM ET
Les Miles signed his amended contract Thursday, extending the deal through 2012. Beyond that, publicly released details about the contract have not changed much. The buyout to leave for Michigan, $1.25 million, reportedly remains unchanged. That's why signing the contract barely affects Miles' status as a potential candidate for Michigan's job. He still can leave for the same buyout as before if the job is offered, though there are no indications it will be. Though Michigan is not commenting on the search to find a replacement for Lloyd Carr, Miles' support remains strong among former U-M players and fans.
