There doesn't seem to be much of a selection list, it's ask one guy one day and when he declines, ask another.

If Martin had known for 3 months Lloyd was done at the end of the season, I would think the guy would have come up with a list of 5 to 10 people to contact as soon as the season is over. Instead, it seemed he was banking on Miles.

They don't even seem to be bothering with interviewing a group of candidates or even anyone in particular.....it's very haphazard and not exactly what you'd expect from "the Leaders and the Best." This is a case of Michigan arrogance plain and simple.

This was the first Michigan coaching job opened up to the outside since Bo, and they thought everybody would come begging to take a paycut for the honor of being Tressel's bitch.

Speaking of Tressel, OSU's search was just as agonizing. I remember praying that we would not end up with Glenn Mason or Mike Bellotti. Tressel was at the top of my list followed by Walt Harris. I'm glad it turned out to be Tressel. Here's a link to the OSU hiring mess:

i know cwood & others have close connections to the michigan program & i have no info other than what i have been reading...but i am making my prediction who the next coach of michigan will be...brian kelly...

Unless Bill Martin is fired Brian Kelly will not be a candidate, unfortunately for UM.

That article makes an odd assertion that Lloyd is pushing Kelly......i like kelly. would love him as a coach.....but if he has rubbed people the wrong way, how can one of those people not by Lloyd Carr, who seems to be taking a bit more active role that he had conveyed he would.....i'd be all for Kelly, but if Lloyd has issues w/ Miles, it stands to reason it he would issues w/ Kelly.....my sense is that is the NYP reaching big time with that assertion.

CWood, any new developments at all......sounds like you discount the Kelly stuff as well.

I hope he's not reaching! I like Kelly.

I guess my thought was that CWood and others have told me that BK somehow angered people throughout the state of Michigan--like HS coaches. Lloyd is loved by the HS coaches, and it seems like he would be against someone like BK.

Then again.....maybe I am one the making the reach! :142smilie

Fan of Robbins work as well.......and you are right, tons of heat right now on BM......people have been freaking out all week thats he's dropping the ball and the fanbase is on edge and fearful we're gonna end up hiring from within. I guess Pro Football Talk had something about Marvin Lewis, and thats what creating a message board meltdown today also!

Since the basketball team blows, this is all we UM fans have going right now! Although I'm a big fan of hockey, which is ranked #2!!!!

Miles still Michigan wild card

Posted: Sunday December 09, 2007 09:59AM ET

Ball State coach Brady Hoke may be a viable candidate, despite just early contact with Michigan athletic director Bill Martin and no known interview. U-M coordinators, Ron English and Mike DeBord, both are possibilities. But Les Miles remains the wild card and will until a new coach is hired. Michigan already has permission to contact him. It's believed that contact has occurred between the sides in the past few days. But all parties would probably like it to remain as discreet as possible to not endanger Miles' position at LSU. Even though Miles is weeks away from the biggest game of his coaching career, his passion for Michigan remains undeniable. Simply listen to his radio interviews and read his barely amended contract.

Payton denies Michigan interest

Posted: Sunday December 09, 2007 09:56AM ET

Saints coach Sean Payton told the New Orleans Times-Picayune on Friday that he has not been contacted by Michigan officials about the head coaching job. "I'm extremely excited to be the head coach of the New Orleans Saints. I know people have heard that before from other head coaches in our league, but trust me, this is where I want to be." Payton -- in the second year of a four-year, $8-million deal -- was asked if he wants to officially remove his name from consideration for the Michigan job. "I don't think I have to officially remove my name," he said. "There's nothing to it."

Miles has been offered 2.5 million with a nice incentive package. He is mulling it over. He is OK with the salary but UM may need to do some work on the assistant cash pool. The two nuts that are tough to crack are (a) does Miles want to work at UM with Carr hanging around in the AD (if he stays after Miles is hired); and (b) the national title game and the fact an agreement would mean he would likely not coach in it.

Mary Sue Coleman (UM president) took the lead on this hire last week. Bill Martin is playing a role but given the botched approach with Miles the first time around , it is likely a limited one.

Brian Kelly is still not a candidate (and will not be one). Names popping up as potential fall backs are Jason Garrett and Marvin Lewis. This list will grow substantially in the coming days if Miles turns UM down.

Since it has been quiet in this thread recently, I though I would post some of the rumor/speculation/innuedo that has been making the rounds in the last 2-3 days.

Cwood and others with insight......can you slice through any of this fat?

Sean Peyton, declined an opportunity to fly to Ann Arbor for an interview.....per Glazer on Fox pregrame....UM, though, remains interested and will contact him closer to the end of the season.

Les and/or his people meet with various UM folks like Prez Colement and AD Martin. An offer is in the works, not to be announced for awhile.

Cam Cameron--Pro Football Talk says within league circles, Martin may want to contact him. Jimmy Ceffalo says on dolphin pregame that Cameron will leave to be UM Offensive Coordinator under Les Miles....that I thought was interesting.

Marvin Lewis---been contacted. Allegedly not going to be at practice today and nobody knows why.

Lane Kiffin---On Countdown, Mort reported that Kiffin's people are trying to Martin's ear regarding the coaching position.

Steve Sarkisian--this is a full blown interent message board rumor....have not seen anybody really report anything related to him.

Brian Kelly---Lloyd Carr is suddenly pushing him as a candidate. I do know that there are many within the UM fanbase who would prefer him over Miles.....you can probably put me in that camp.

Now that GVSU's season is over, expect Chuck Martin to be interviewed and possibly hired this week.

Everybody keeps turning Martin down, and he is tired of the process so he will announce this week that its either Brady Hoke, Ron English or Mike Debord

Rivals keeps dropping the "there is a home rum candidate out there" line and an announcement is soon to be forthcoming.

Mysterious Tuesday Morning Press Confernece----this one is my favorite. Some have said--i think it started w/ Rivals, not sure--that there is a presser on for tomorrow and that big news will be announced....the rumors for this have ranged from Les Miles as coach to Sarkisian to Marvin Lewis....others have said its an announcement that Lloyd will recuse himself from the search process as a veiled olive brank to the Les camp....and others have said its for Lloyd to say he wont coach the bowl game and DeBord and/or English will serve as interim HC for the Florida game.

I believe that is all the rumors flying around. I feel like I have heard more crazy rumors than that, but I cant think of any....let the weird times continue. I am glad we dont do the coaching search thing all that often, as I am eager to have a new coach and most of the fanbase is a fractured, panic mess right now.....if the bball team was any good that would serve as a distraction, but obviously it is not.

Like I said, can anyone cut through this fat. Cheers.

Thanks for the update CWood....i was too busy typing my next post between answering work phone calls to even see this.

Interesting stuff, for sure....i think the first hang up is easy to overcome as I really dont think Lloyd is going to stay all that active.....it is my understanding, for example, that unlike Bo he does not plan to keep an office in Schembelcher Hall.

I do think UM will increase the assistant coach cash pool.

I think the trip up is his coaching status for the NC. I think he loves his kids at LSU and will have a hard time leaving them anyway....to not guide them through the game vs OSU would be tough. I wonder what LSU's plan would be if Miles does leave before the NC.

Any sense on the timeline for this.....people seem to be convinced that there is a major presser tomorrow?

If there is a major presser tomorrow that means they hired Brady Hoke. I have not heard a thing about a presser.

I'd put money on the fact there is no presser tomorrow....it was just an internet rumor that seemed to grow throughout the weekend, but I did want to ask if you had heard anything about it.

That said, the mere statement that Hoke would be the coach within the next 24 hours just caused me dump some whiskey into my morning coffee. :142smilie

There would be a total meltdown within the fan base.

If Hoke was named head coach it would happen this week. If not, it means we probably won't see anyone named coach until January.

So, my guess is that the terms get worked out "behind the scences" with Miles but it is agreed that nothing gets out until after the National Championship Game. Then Miles accepts the position at Michigan after he takes down OSU. What do you think CWood?

I can then envision a halftime speech at the home basketball on February 17th against Ohio State where Miles predicts a win in 272 days...LOL.

I think this is the best case scenario for UM at this point but there is plenty of reason to believe a deal will never get done with Miles.

It will be intersting to see how it plays out. If Miles has to decide between UM and coaching in the title game, that is a no brainer. UM may be his dream job, but all these coaches want to go in the record book with a National Title. No way he gives up that chance.

Any of our LSU brethern out there today....is there any scuttlebut on this yet down south.....the media up here is too busy dissecting the Lions choke job and are nowhere near the case.

Haven't really followed this much, but we know UM likes to hire "blue blood", I was wondering if there has been any rumblings about Harbaugh. He seems to be doing ok at stanford. My apologies if this is a foolish question, or has been addressed already.:toast:

How funny would that be, I hope it doenst happen.
Everyone has been really excited about the GT new hire, while wondering why southern miss fired their coach.
